A College Student’s Guide on How to Manage School from Home
Struggling on how to adjust with the current situation, where it is hard to distinguish the difference between home and school, anymore? Don’t worry, you are not alone! Your college buddy got your back.
Tumblr media
The COVID-19 pandemic made the year 2020 one of the worst year ever. It puts us on lockdowns, travel restrictions, and halt almost all of our plans and activities, so we can stay home and stop the virus from further spreading. We may have been paused for some time, but after a few months, we figured out how we can continue. Officials introduced the “new normal” standard, which includes how we can attend schools and universities while staying home with the help of technology, of course.
Here are some tips on how to manage your schooling while at home:
1. Know all your school activities that have specific schedule.
Tumblr media
The day before your class, ask yourself: Do I have an online meeting with my professor? Or my group mates? Or do I have any scheduled activity or deadline? So you can prepare and work with ease tomorrow. This can help you to allot time for your other activities like your readings, papers, and also with your non-academic ones like working out or watching movies, or even lunch break and nap time. Knowing your school schedule will hep you determine when to study and also when to rest.
2. Treat the day as if you are really going to school.
Tumblr media
Yes, you are doing your classes at home, but that does not mean you’re gonna be in your comfy pajamas and laying in bed all day. Even if you are not going out to school, keep your usual routine and have your little “get ready with me” moment. Do your bed, take a shower, dress up a little bit, put some make up on, have some breakfast or a cup of warm coffee, or whatever it is that you usually do in the morning. This will help you shrug off the lazy spirit out of you and will motivate you to have a more productive day.
3. Designate a “SCHOOL ONLY” zone or your own study area at home.
Tumblr media
Inside your house, find a place where you can study properly. Choose somewhere that you are comfortable enough but not too comfortable like your bed. As much as possible avoid lying down, go find an area where you can sit properly and still able to read and take notes. This technique helps you condition your mind that you are actually attending school, helps you to focus more and absorb your lessons well, and at the same time, keep the boundaries between where you should only do your school works and where you should rest.
4. Mute your social media while on your online class.
Tumblr media
In a face-to-face class, the rule was used to be “keep your phones away” or “turn off your phones” to avoid distractions while having classes but how can we keep it away or turn it off, when we also need it for our online classes? If using mobile phone is unavoidable, you can just simply turn off the notifications on all your social media account once you are in an online class already. It will not just lessen the distractions, it will also lessen the your connection problem and the lagging of your phone.
5. Take advantage of your asynchronous classes.
Tumblr media
Asynchronous class means instead of online meeting (synchronous class), the professor/instructor will just leave a task for you online. Asynchronous classes’ activities tend to be the cause of backlogs and cramming, so do these activities exactly within the assigned schedule of your class/subject, so you can finish the task earlier and have more time to rest and chill.
6. Don’t be guilty that you are taking a break.
Tumblr media
We all want to finish all our requirements and pass our classes, but hey, we need some break too. Take time to relieve some stress and relax for a while. You need it, everyone needs it. Watch movies, or TV series, do some arts and crafts at home, spend time with your family, or anything that will keep you away from school works. In college, we get bothered or guilty when we are doing this things and label ourselves, like “I’m not doing anything” or that “I’m not productive”. But these are still activities, you're still technically doing something, it’s just, it’s not related to your academics. So, don’t be too hard on yourself. Taking a break is like a slingshot, you need to step back to gain momentum, in order for you to reach farther.
We never know when, but we are all hoping that someday we can finally go back to school, go back to work, and meet people physically, but even if that time comes, it is not gonna go back to the way it was used to be.
Just like Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, survival is not based on how strong or weak you are but it is about how well you adapt to the changes of your environment. Same goes to us, we need to adapt in order to survive. Adapting is a challenge, so I hope this simple tips can help you, and always remember that you’ve always got a buddy in me!

Do Animals Have Feelings? Examining Empathy in Animals
Many humans feel love and empathy towards animals, but do the animals we care about so deeply feel the same about us? How about each other? Scientific research backs the idea of emotions in animals. In fact, researchers have observed empathy in them, as well as grief, fear and other complex emotions often associated primarily with humans.
Tumblr media
Human Emotions in Animals
Viewing animals as our emotional equals is not a new phenomenon. Pythagoras, an ancient philosopher and mathematician who lived until 490 BC, believed that animals possessed the full range of human emotions. Somewhat more recently, Charles Darwin wrote, “There is no fundamental difference between man and the higher mammals in the mental facilities.” Today, current research supports the idea that at least some animals experience a variety of emotions, including fear, joy, happiness, shame, rage, compassion, respect and more.
Dr. Marc Bekoff, professor and author of numerous essays about animal rights and conservation, stated, “Non-human animals are amazing beings. Daily we’re learning more and more about their fascinating cognitive abilities, emotional capacities and moral lives. We know that fish are conscious and sentient, rats, mice and chickens display empathy and feel not only their own pain but also that of other individuals.”
This understanding of animals as emotional beings is not something that meshes with some humans’ views. Throughout history, many people believed — and still believe — we differ from animals because of our consciousness and connection to fellow man. Those who take the behaviorist approach to studying animals argue that instead of assigning human emotions to animals, we can explain their behavior through a stimulus-response theory.
Still, evidence is mounting that animals do experience at least some degree of emotion. Through advanced technologies, we’re able to observe animals in their natural habitat. Thus, more recently, we’ve seen more animals having what appear to be emotional reactions to triggering events. Many agree these responses are not just instinctual in nature.
Now, animal researchers find themselves asking what, if any, line separates how humans perceive the world emotionally from how non-humans do. Scientists agree that emotions play a pivotal role in the well-being of humans and have likely helped us evolve overtime. It’s entirely possible that emotions have played a role in the survival of other species and affect their everyday lives greatly.
Empathy in Animals
One of the most complex and integral emotions is empathy, the ability to understand and share the feelings of those around us. Humans display empathy toward other humans and animals alike. Do animals do the same? Research points to yes.
Empathy is likely more prevalent in social species, or animals that associate in social groups. Dr. James C. Harris at Johns Hopkins University described it as “an evolutionary mechanism to maintain social cohesion.” In other words, animals that rely on a group for survival must be more sensitive to what those around them are feeling, whether they’re human or non-humans.
The idea of empathy in animals introduces a whole new way of looking at our non-human neighbors, suggesting that our feelings toward them might be reciprocated. It is also possible that they truly care about members of their own species in a way that we can relate to. This complex emotional trait has been observed in other primates, as well as dogs, mice and elephants.
Examples of Animals Exhibiting Empathy
Observing empathy in animals is becoming more frequent due to our ability to safely observe animals in their own habitats. Here are a few examples of animals displaying empathy in what we might describe as human-like ways.
Elephants Mourn a Lost Conservationist
Lawrence Anthony was a conservationist who founded the 5,000-acre Thula Thula Reserve with African elephants. He gained a reputation for being able to comfort elephants upon their arrival at the reserve. In fact, he managed to keep elephants who wanted to leave from wandering back into harm’s way. In his book, “The Elephant Whisperer: My Life with the Herd in the African Wild,” he said he learned to communicate with the elephants by observing how they communicated with each other.
When Anthony died of a heart attack, elephants traveled to his home seemingly to pay their respects. His son said that since his father’s death, the herd has come to his house on the edge of their reserve every night.
While elephants grieving the loss of their own herd members is not a new phenomenon, the act of paying respects to a human who worked hard to help them is remarkable.
Dogs Comfort Humans in the Aftermath of Trauma
According to an article in the New York Times, Iraq veteran Benjamin Stepp returned home from two deployments with a traumatic brain injury and multiple other injuries causing pain. During a lecture at graduate school, Stepp tried hard to focus, but he was agitated. No one in the class noticed except for his service dog Arleigh, who jumped into his lap to comfort him. He believed Arleigh always empathized when he was struggling emotionally.
Comfort dogs also display empathy. When the horrific events of 2012 happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School, comfort dogs were able to help children open up and heal. Some children spoke directly to the dogs about what they’d experienced. In fact, one child spoke for the first time since the shootings after petting one of the dogs.
Arleigh and the comfort dogs provided to Sandy Hook survivors are not unique. Service dogs, as well as family pets, help veterans, kids with autism, adults suffering with mental health distress, those recovering from traumatic experiences and more. A recent study concluded that dogs feel empathy toward humans and act on that empathy, responding swiftly to humans crying.
Rats Look Out for Their Friends
Many don’t picture rats when they think of empathy, but a recent study proves that rats empathize with their friends. In the study, rats saved their friends from drowning. The experiment showed that when one rat was soaked in water, another rat quickly learned how to operate a lever that would allow the rat to escape to a dry area.
What’s more impressive about this experiment is that the rats gave up a treat that would have dropped if they didn’t pull the lever to help their fellow rat. This suggests the well-being of their friend was more valuable to them than food for themselves. If the suffering rat wasn’t present, the other rat accepted the treat.
Empathy in animals spans species and continents. Animals display empathy toward humans and other animals in a multitude of ways, including comforting, grieving and even rescuing each other from harm at their own expense.
Do Animals Have Feelings?
Award-winning environmental writer Carl Safina addressed this very question in an interview with National Geographic. He said, “Watching animals my whole life, I’ve always been struck by how similar to us they are. I’ve always been touched by their bonds and been impressed — occasionally frightened — by their emotions.” In fact, those who work closest with animals are most convinced that they do contain a wide range of emotions and feelings.
Skeptics argue that animals’ behaviors are not inherent proof that they’re experiencing complex emotions. Still, most scientists agree that animals are conscious beings that experience varying degrees of emotional responses.
While there’s still a lot of research to be done concerning animal emotions, more evidence exists than ever in history that our non-human friends are experiencing feelings much like we do. Likely, these feelings play a major role in their lives and survival.
Consider an online bachelor’s degree in psychology. If you already hold a bachelor’s degree but would like to sharpen your scholarly research skills in the areas of critical thinking, search methods, research presentation and more, you could benefit from our online masters in experimental psychology.

Looking Back “On the Origin of Species”
As I set out to begin Invasive Species, it became clear to me that I didn't actually know anything about species at all. I did however, have a vague notion of Charles Darwin's 1859 classic On the Origin of Species and resolved that it might be an appropriate place for me to start my research. In the book, Darwin puts forth for the first time his theory of natural selection, as the primary mechanism driving the evolution of species. It's 2020 now and we understand much better the limitations of Darwin's theories. However, his rather elegant line of thinking is still one which underpins our modern understanding of biological species, and as such remains worth understanding and exploring.
Ironically, the two things that might have stuck with me the most after reading the book are two things Darwin never mentions at all, despite talking about them at great length. Notably, Darwin never mentions the word speciation, which is the term describing the formation of new distinct species over the course of evolution (supposedly, the term was coined after the publication of his book). Nor does he ever define the word nature, despite it being foundational to the study of speciation itself.
Lets look at the word nature first-
In his book, Darwin makes several references to "nature" and "her laws"; an act which not only personifies nature, but assigns it the responsibility of enforcing certain laws upon the whole of the natural world. In this sense, understanding speciation is made more difficult if we don't clearly understand the "nature" whose laws drive it's mechanisms. I spoke a little bit about the dubious identity of the word "nature" in my previous post, but for the sake of this write up, lets assume that nature can be defined as such; In the absence of an intelligent designer, "nature" refers to the set of conditions and forces under which all things in the universe react, given some arbitrary minimum of human interference. I'm eliminating the need for an intelligent designer for two reasons; (1) The identity of such a designer is dubious in itself and better suited for the realm of philosophy, and (2), the absence of such a designer is the same simplifying assumption made by Darwin himself and the cohort of mainstream scientific researchers who spearheaded the development of scientific thought throughout the 19th & 20th centuries.
Now consider speciation-
Tumblr media
*source- google.com
Pictured above is a small sampling of the over 60 known species of megabat. But what exactly is it that separates the Egyptian fruit bat from the Indian Flying Fox? Or the Rodriguez flying fox from the Black flying fox?
Tween the difference with the eye, and you'll likely realize that it mostly comes down to phenotype. Darwin theorized that certain physical differences between individuals in the same population signaled beneficial characteristics that would help said individual survive the ecological pressures in that population's particular ecosystem. These differences are then identified by females in the population who "select" males for reproduction with the understanding that reproducing with these males might produce offspring more fit for survival. He termed the process "sexual selection", and suggested that it was the main (though not exclusive) mechanism driving natural selection on the principle of "survival of the fittest".
But what of those supposedly superficial physical differences between species? In truth, there are several intermediate forms often seen between species of the same genus. Darwin uses several terms to classify these, some of which I've captured in the table below.
Tumblr media
Looking at a portion of the tree of megabat species, you can see where these intermediate forms might fill in the gaps:
Tumblr media
*source wikipedia
Numerous methods have been used over the years to devise a scientific method of classifying species, including the use of genetics. However, despite attempts to devise a rigorous standard for species classification, the reality of the process remains more of an art, with plenty of room for debate and alternative interpretation. Darwin himself suggested that the best tactic might be to consider all individuals that might freely reproduce with one another as varieties, while those that have lost that ability as distinct species (after all, while a shark and a grouper might both have fins, they certainly don't copulate.)
So what do we make of a world where the distinction between species at a fine level is revealed to be something of a matter of opinion? And isn't the matter further muddied by the fact that the whole process of speciation via natural selection is being driven by a nature who's exact identity is also somewhat dubious? After all, the laws of nature are subject to human observation, and in such capacity, have exhibited the tendency to vary significantly throughout the course of human history...

The Life-Changing Habit of Journaling
Why Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, and many more great minds recommend it.
Pratay Das ; thinking-outline
Ever wondered why history’s great minds including Isaac Newton, Abraham Lincoln, Andy Warhol, Leonardo Da Vinci, Marcus Aurelius, Charles Darwin, Winston Churchill, Benjamin Franklin, Ernest Hemingway, George Bernard Shaw and Maya Angelou would spend so much of their precious time writing things that will never be seen by another soul?
Jim Rohn says, “If you’re serious about becoming a wealthy, powerful, sophisticated, healthy, influential, cultured, and unique individual, keep a journal.”
Many famous creatives, writers, innovators and original thinkers of our generation keep journals— for many, it is a creative necessity, for others, a place for exploration, and for some an art form in and of itself.
Albert Einstein’s travel diary to the United States recorded his experiences abroad from November 1930 to June 1931. Photo from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
But you don’t have to be creative, scientist or an innovator for this practice to be worthwhile.
Journaling helps you prioritize, clarify thinking, and accomplish your most important tasks, over urgent busy work.
Thinking in writing has this magical quality of clarifying your thoughts.
Tim Ferriss calls journaling the deloading phase in life. He explains, “I use it as a tool to clarify my thinking and goals, much as Kevin Kelly (one of my favorite humans) does. The paper is like a photography darkroom for my mind.”
Get used to the pen again!
Reflective writing has also been shown to improve decision-making and critical thinking in a number of medical professions.
Michael Hyatt says “What happens to us is not as important as the meaning we assign to it. Journaling helps sort this out.”
Journals give you a record of the progress you’ve made toward your goals to keep you motivated in the long slog of actually reaching them.
Charles Darwin kept numerous notebooks to record his discoveries and thoughts on everything from his first sketch of an evolutionary tree (left) to important books to read (right). Photo from Public Domain.
“As part of your morning creative burst, use your journal to review and hone your daily to-do list. Review and hone your life vision and big picture goals” says Benjamin Hardy.
Numerous studies (of the scientifically rigorous variety) have shown that personal writing can help people better cope with stressful events, relieve anxiety, boost immune cell activity
Judy Willis MD, a neurologist, and former classroom teacher explains, “The practice of writing can enhance the brain’s intake, processing, retaining, and retrieving of information… it promotes the brain’s attentive focus … boosts long-term memory, illuminates patterns, gives the brain time for reflection, and when well-guided, is a source of conceptual development and stimulus of the brain’s highest cognition.”
What you write, you control. You don’t have to spend your whole morning writing, but the only rule is to write continuously. Be consistent to make the most of it.
Throughout his life, inventor Thomas Edison jotted down ideas and thoughts in personal journals. Photo from Edison and the Rise of Innovation.
An Optimal Approach to Start Journaling
Start each morning by identifying tasks, goals for the day.
Only write a few bullet points (2/3) to make it easier to start and make progress. You can mix personal and work stuff together.
By keeping each day’s entry short and simple, you are making it so easy to journal without excuses.
At the end of each day, look back at what you accomplished, what you learned, what you want to follow-up on tomorrow, and what you want to pursue tomorrow.
Start small. Make micro-commitment each day to get started.
Don’t make a huge commitment. Try it for 30 days. Spend just 5- 10 minutes a day reflecting in your journal. When the 30 days are up, go back and review what you’ve learned and the progress you’ve made. Then you can decide if you want to continue journaling.
Aim for 5 to 10 minutes of uninterrupted time to do your journaling, ideally the same time every day.
What you write, draw or sketch is completely up to you.
Just sit and write.
Over 7,000 pages of Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings, ideas, and natural inspirations have been preserved. Photo from The British Library.
Mind-map, list goals, outline your vision, doodle, draw, sketch, make a gratitude list, list your short-term and long-term, write down everything you are curious about, list your passion projects, make a daily entry of needs to be done, reflect on your accomplishments, etc.
Just get all the ideas out on paper, and push yourself to see if more are hanging around in the background of your mind.
Come back to them later to see if anything jumps out at you.
As part of your morning and post-work journaling sessions, be sure to write about everything you are grateful for. Gratitude journaling is a scientifically proven way to overcome several psychological challenges.
It will change your entire life orientation from scarcity to abundance.
“Writing in a journal each day, with a structured, strategic process allows you to direct your focus to what you did accomplish, what you’re grateful for, and what you’re committed to doing better tomorrow. Thus, you more deeply enjoy your journey each day, feel good about any forward progress you made, and use a heightened level of clarity to accelerate your results,” says Hal Elrod, author of “The Miracle Morning.”
According to Dr. James Pennebaker, an expert in the field of expressive writing, to get the best results from journaling, it was recommended that you:
Forget about grammar/spelling when you write.
Be honest and authentic (write like no one else is going to read it).
Write by hand for better memory recall.
Adopt cursive writing to get your thoughts out faster.
Journaling alone won’t boost your productivity. But when you combine action with reflection you’ll take better actions over time.
“Writing accesses you’re the left hemisphere of the brain, which is analytical and rational,” says Maud Purcell, a psychotherapist and journaling expert. “While your left brain is occupied, your right brain is free to do what it does best, i.e. create, intuit and feel. In this way, writing removes mental blocks and allows us to use more of our brainpower to better understand ourselves and the world around us.”
Journaling is not a commonplace habit, it is a keystone habit. Keystone habits affect how you work, eat, play, live, spend, and communicate.
As Charles Duhigg, author of “The Power of Habit” says, “..they encourage change by creating structures that help other habits to flourish.” A minor change in one aspect of your life can trigger so many other positive changes.
Journaling is a practical and accessible way to stay connected to your inner self, your body, your dreams and your purpose in life.

These Chinese fossil deposits shed light on an explosive period in evolution
The most recent 12 percent of time on Earth is a striking anomaly when compared with the great bulk of our planet’s evolution. After 3 billion years or more of Earth as a microbial world, cells found ways to grow and assemble in their millions to build eyes, guts, muscles, nerve systems with brains, skeletons, and the rest of the complex structures that form the mobile, sentient, marvelously various animals that fill our now-familiar world.
The speed of this transition, seen by geologists in the sudden appearance of complex fossils such as trilobites in layers of rock, seemed so shockingly abrupt that it amazed and worried even Charles Darwin. As this flowering of complex multicellular life is used to mark the beginning of the Cambrian Period of Earth time, 541 million years ago, it has long been called the “Cambrian explosion.”
We now know it was not quite so abrupt. The evolution actually took place in distinct stages over more than 30 million years—the pioneering geologist Preston Cloud called it “the Cambrian eruption.”
The period has, somewhat mysteriously, left behind more than its fair share of amazing fossil localities called “Lagerstätten,” where not only hard skeletons but soft and delicate tissues are preserved, to give a much clearer window on the totality of life than the usual fragments of shell and bone. The classic in this respect was long the Burgess Shale, high up on Mount Stephen in British Columbia, Canada, and mined for its wondrous fossils for more than a century. In the past three decades it has been joined by China’s Chengjiang deposits.
Together these have given a detailed picture from near the dawn of animal life in the marine realm (the land, then, was still largely barren): a wealth of arthropods, worms, lamp shells, sponges, chordates, and even some animals that still defy biological assignment.
Now another Cambrian Lagerstätte has turned up—and the first results, just published in Science, suggest that it may rival those of the Burgess Shale and Chengjiang. It is also in China, in Qingjiang in Hubei province, and is about the same age as the Chengjiang, some 518 million years old, and so in the early part of the Cambrian Period. Indeed, it formed on the same general stretch of continental shelf sea as the Chengjiang fossils, about 621 miles away, and seemingly in somewhat deeper waters. What is surprising is that not only are the fossils just as exquisite, but they represent quite different animal communities. The Cambrian seas were clearly more diverse than thought, even in those early days.
Although the Qingjiang fossils do include many worms, arthropod, and sponges, they also are prolific in animals possessing the most delicate and translucent of tissues, such as jellyfish, here preserved with mouths and tentacles, and their distant relatives “comb jellies.” These are rare in the Burgess Shale and Chengjiang deposits, but among the Qingjiang fossils there are many astounding examples, flattened on the shale surfaces and preserving fine details of these softest of anatomies.
The comb jellies may be the earliest form of animal–a title that they currently contest with the sponges. Both these kinds of animal are preserved here, in numbers and fidelity that may help resolve the dispute.
Other strange and wonderful animals appear in the Qingjiang strata, and represent curious and perhaps profound trends in evolution. There are kinorhynchs, for example – these are the “mud dragons,” animals that are today obscure because they are part of the “meiofauna,” those tiny creatures that live between grains of sediment on the sea floor.
Here, three new fossil forms have been found, some up to 1.5 inches long, rather than the contemporary sub-millimeter size. These Cambrian giants suggest that some of today’s meiofauna started off “normally” sized, and then became miniaturized–for good.
It is a true cornucopia. How did it form? The same kind of quick-fire preservation process is mooted as for the Burgess Shale and the Chengjiang fossils: the animals were caught up in mud slurries, and carried down to deep, oxygen-starved parts of the sea floor to be rapidly buried in the stifling mud. It makes sense—but then such conditions and processes persisted long after the Cambrian, and yet were rarely associated with such bonanza fossil finds. There is much that remains mysterious about the dawn of life as we know it—but the Qingjiang fossils, as we study them more, will slowly shed light on these enigmas.

In 1859, Charles Darwin assuredly appear his long-gestating approach of accustomed alternative in On the Agent of Species. Acclaimed for his descriptions of Galapagos turtles and birds’ ever-changing beaks, the English scientist concluded, “from so simple a alpha amaranthine forms best admirable and best admirable accept been, and are being, evolved.”

Fast advanced about 160 years, and that adduce is confined as the afflatus for a new activity to digitize arresting and, in abounding cases, endangered plants. Alleged “Endless Forms,” the action brings calm 17 analysis institutions in an accomplishment to browse and allotment two actor bulb specimens over the abutting three years.
Matthew Pace, an acclaim able with the New York Botanical Garden, is one of the activity coordinators. He says the digitization will focus on plants from 15 families, including succulents, cannibal creatures, and epiphytes, which are bacilli that abound on added plants. Though they alter appreciably from their active appearances, these botanical specimens acquisition new means to betray the eye, alike back arranged bound and angry into 2D images.
More importantly, these images are one of the few assurances approaching ancestors of scientists can see and abstraction what came before, as abounding of the featured plants are threatened by poaching, altitude change, and added avant-garde perils. That’s why no bulb stands alone. Each one is photographed adjoining to a adjudicator for size, blush ambition to ensure the exact appropriate antithesis and acknowledgment of the image, and a agenda account its provenance.

Here, from what seems like an amaranthine alternative of stills, are eight abnormally noteworthy forms:
“There’s still a lot we don’t apperceive about bulb anatomy plans, and why plants attending the way they do,” Pace says. “Even with article as iconic as the venus flytrap, we’re still aggravating to attack with these basal questions.” S. botterii ability help. The delicious epiphyte, begin on timberline branches and bluff sides, is anticipation to be one of the best archaic associates of its genus, according to the California Academy of Sciences.
If you’re a accurate fan of agaves, you’ll apperceive the name Howard Scott Gentry. An American botanist built-in in 1903, Gentry is acclaimed (at atomic in assertive circles) for his assignment documenting bulb activity in Mexico starting in the 1930s. This specimen, frequently alleged Parry’s agave or artichoke aeon plant, is one account in a “massive trove” of flora calm by Gentry, according to curators at UT Austin. In accession to the concrete collections of ample leaves and little buds, Gentry additionally took photographs like the one apparent here, and wrote bottomward ethnobotanical observations about the accord amid bodies and the plants about them.

Also alleged the “devil’s potato root,” E. umbellatus is a twining backcountry aboriginal to the Caribbean. The Philadelphia Academy of Sciences has been application this and added specimens to analysis the change of bulb chemistry. Some 200 years ago, associates of this breed showed signs of pyrrolizidine alkaloid toxins, which are still actuality researched in this and added contexts today. With accurate canning and digitization, scientists may be able to ask and acknowledgment agnate questions in addition two centuries.
First declared in 1995 by Texas botanist Karen Clary, Y linearifolia has had a adverse two decades. Since this antecedent description, the plant, which grows alone in baby zones of Mexico’s Chihuahuan Desert, has been approved by actionable harvesters. “There’s a adventitious they could be acclimated to facilitate poaching, so there’s a charge for the association to ascertain guidelines about this,” Pace says of the Amaranthine Forms project. “When you’re ambidextrous with absolutely attenuate plants, that increases their wow factor. For addition to say, I’m the alone being in the apple who has this acutely attenuate bulb in my collection, that’s a huge cachet symbol.”
This abnormally absorbing epiphyte is accepted in the United States as “Spanish moss.” It hangs from Southern alive oaks and apparel over streetlights from Virginia to Florida and as far west as Texas. But it’s not moss, and it isn’t Spanish. Rather, it’s a drifting abiding assemble begin in abounding a close climate; in French Polynesia, bisected a apple away, it’s accepted as “grandpa’s beard.” Historically, it was added than bald decoration. According to this specimen’s keepers at the University of Wisconsin, the angular being was acclimated to ample car seats and mattresses, and alike cloistral homes.

Members of the Bromeliaceae ancestors are calmly articular by their annoying flowers. It may be adamantine to acquaint from this image, but the case apparent actuality is a accessory of the pineapple. While we accessory the aureate bake-apple with Hawaii, P. cryptantha is anticipation to accept emerged in the Andes abundance range. Such “alpine environments are amid of the best imperiled regions on the planet,” according to botanists at Harvard University.
Perhaps the coolest allotment of S. purpurea is hidden abysmal inside: the cannibal bulb is lined with downward-pointing water-resistant hairs. Back a appetizing bug dips central its aureate gullet, the insect is trapped and drowned in calm rainwater. The bullpen plant’s outsides are OK, too. Named for the Greek chat “purpurea,” acceptation purple-red, the admirable stems allure poachers, who advertise uprooted individuals on the atramentous market. Abounding states accept attention laws to assure it. Scientists with the “Endless Forms” activity accept adopted to becloud advice on the agent of assertive digitized specimens for agnate reasons, acquisitive to aegis added plants like it in the aforementioned area.
Known by the accepted name “Road Kill Cactus,” this nearly-spineless bulb is begin throughout the Caribbean and arctic into Florida, area it can abound up to 20 anxiety tall. Its name comes not from absolute altercations with cars, but because its ample stems attending squashed—like they’ve been afresh run over. Populations of C. rubescens are currently stable, but the annoying plants could face a claiming bottomward the road: “There’s some affair that plants that are acutely acclimatized to acute environments—like cactus family, the poinsettia family—can be disrupted by alteration circumstances,” Pace says.

Indonesia’s disaster teams struggle to go it alone. That also makes them national heroes.
By Timothy McLaughlin and Stanley Widianto, Washington Post, November 29, 2018
JAKARTA, Indonesia--Retno Budiharto is on intimate terms with the dead.
Since June, the veteran of Indonesia’s search-and-rescue service has encountered bodies in buildings destroyed by earthquakes and among the sodden wreckage after a tsunami.
And when his boat slipped through a muddy brown oil slick strewn with floating aircraft debris in late October, he knew he would again be looking for bodies rather than survivors.
The past months in Indonesia--virtually a nonstop string of disasters--have been a huge test for Retno and others in Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency. It has also put a spotlight on the country’s ambitions of responding to its many crises without ceding control to foreign nations and international organizations.
At times, Indonesia’s rescue agency has struggled to keep pace with such catastrophes across a nation in nature’s crosshairs. Its more than 15,000 islands shadow part of the Pacific’s “Ring of Fire”--an area of intense tectonic activity prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
Yet the stress, difficult logistics and relentless demands also have made Indonesia’s rescuers into something of folk heroes in their trademark orange jumpsuits.
The agency has won the admiration of Indonesians as a symbol of national pride and self-reliance. It has even elevated the spokesman for the National Disaster Management Authority, another response agency, into a celebrity as he continues to provide updates to the media despite ongoing treatment for Stage 4 lung cancer.
A cartoon once depicted the spokesman, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, receiving chemotherapy while a volcano erupted and the ground cracked near his feet.
Retno is 46 years old and has been dispatched to disasters for more than half his life with the National Search and Rescue Agency, known locally by the acronym Basarnas.
The group formed in 1972. Its first major response operation came two years later when a Pan Am flight en route to Los Angeles crashed in mountains near Bali, killing all 107 people aboard. Retno signed up to join Basarnas in 1992 and began work the next year.
One of his first memorable assignments, he said, came in 2000, when he was dispatched to the island of Sumatra to search for earthquake survivors, flying in with high-ranking ministers on a military transport plane.
The years have taught him how to read the severity of plane crashes, the force of earthquakes and ultimately the chances of survival for those caught in them.
“The dead can’t be alive, but the alive can be dead,” he said of the emphasis that rescuers put on finding survivors quickly. “There’s pride to be found in finding people who are still alive.”
But after the Oct. 29 crash of Lion Air Flight 610--which nose-dived into the Java Sea--Retno saw little hope for finding a “VVIP,” his term for someone found alive. All 189 people aboard the flight died.
Investigators are closing in on the Boeing 737 Max 8’s faulty sensors, which doomed the plane minutes after takeoff. Pilots wrestled to keep the plane up as incorrect readings on a key vane pushed the plane’s nose down over and over again, causing the aircraft’s altitude to vary dramatically during its 13 minutes in the air.
Basarnas’s slogan is “May the universe be saved,” but the past months have not been kind to Indonesia.
In June, a ferry crowded with vacationers got caught in bad weather on Lake Toba in North Sumatra province, killing nearly 200 people. The next month, the first of several earthquakes struck the island of Lombok, leaving more than 500 people dead.
The Indonesian government made significant investment in its disaster response and relief programs following the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, no longer wanting to be reliant on foreign assistance.
But President Joko Widodo was criticized for not declaring the Lombok earthquakes a natural disaster, which would have allowed for more foreign help. Coordination between government agencies was at times lacking. Rescuers were stretched thin as aftershocks continued for weeks, complicating their efforts.
Then on Sept. 28, a quake hit near the city of Palu on the island of Sulawesi. Solid ground turned to mud, sweeping away entire inland villages. It also triggered a tsunami that plowed through the city, reducing its bayfront promenade and homes to tangled piles of rubble. At least 2,250 people were killed in the twin disasters.
Almost exactly a month later, just as some of the very first rebuilding efforts began in Palu, the Lion Air flight crashed.
Jonatan Lassa, who researches disaster governance and emergency management at Charles Darwin University in Australia, said: “There is a kind of fatigue” in Indonesia.
Since 2015, rescue resources have been used “very heavily,” Lassa said, adding that they “have not quite recovered.”
Retno, known to his friends and colleagues as Budi, recounted his time on the job on a recent hazy day at Jakarta’s main shipping port, where a command center for the Lion Air search operations was slowly being dismantled.
The Lion Air crash brought Retno close to the area that inspired him to join Basarnas.
When he was 15, his older brother was traveling with friends on a small boat off Jakarta when the engine failed and the vessel began to take on water. His brother, Bambang Suprayogi, two weeks shy of his wedding day, worked feverishly to bail out the boat. He gave his life jacket to the captain’s son when it became apparent the boat was going down, a survivor told Retno.
Exhausted, his brother drowned, and the rest of the passengers were rescued, Retno said. His body was never recovered.
“That’s my motivation: to find victims, dead or alive,” he said.
