Body Hopping Your Way to Immortality

So it's a trope in weird fiction to have wealthy people/sorcerers/necromancers, etc. body-hop their way to immortality, sometimes replying on relatives and descendants to supply the bodies. Charles Dexter Ward and The Thing on the Doorstep are the earliest versions of this I can think of, Tumblr. Are there others that are older (not Lovecraft)? Are there non-HPL variations that aren't older but are from the pulp era?

Have you heard about a man named Joseph Curwen? He, too, brings people back to life.

The name sounds vaguely familiar. I remember reading something about Providence, Rhode Island history as a child and his name was half mentioned. There wasn’t much as it seemed that they erased Curwen’s name from history.
