Charles Tolliver – Paper Man

Paper Man is the debut album led by American jazz trumpeter Charles recorded in 1968.

The AllMusic review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 4½ stars stated: “Also released by the Freedom label, this was trumpeter Charles Tolliver’s full-length album as a leader. One of the top brassmen to emerge during the era (although he never quite lived up to his potential), Tolliver had the fat tone of a Freddie Hubbard, the adventurous spirit of Woody Shaw and a somewhat original conception of his own that bridged the gap between hard bop and the avant-garde. This explorative and stirring music is well worth investigating.”

1968 Roy Ayers’ release Stone Soul Picnic is a perfect listen for a Saturday. Thanks for the great write up by @the_record_room. (Repost) @the_record_room ・・・ Roy Ayers’ Atlantics are truly a thing of wonder. Here he’s got the very best band it was possible to assemble: Charles Tolliver, Gary Bartz, Hubert Laws, Herbie and Ron…just incredible and track one is probably the best of it. ‘A rose for Cindy’ starts free-ish, drifts in and out of tempo and gives everyone a chance to solo, I’ve played it about 5 times today and I can’t get enough of it. Grady Tate is perhaps the biggest surprise here as this isn’t the sort of music I’d associate him with but he’s all over this like he’s Joe Chambers. I spy Sonny Sharrock on the cover, imagine if he’s turned up too. The Pace Report: "Revisiting Another Earth" The Gary Bartz Interview with Pharoah Sanders & Charles Tolliver

Welcome to this special edition of The Pace Report. One of the many highlights of this year's 2019 New York City Winter Jazz Fest is Revive Music's set featuring legendary saxophonist Gary Bartz performing music of the 50th anniversary of "Another Earth" at the famed le Possion Rouge.

Released in 1968, "Another Earth" was Bartz's second release as a leader featuring Pharoah Sanders, Charles Tolliver, Stanley Cowell, and Freddie Waits. The album was produced by NEA Jazz Master and legendary jazz producer Orrin Keepnews released on Milestone Records.

Gary was in town all week for Jazz Congress, Winter Jazz Fest performances, and performed at trumpeter Roy Hargrove's memorial service.

I had a chance to sit down with Gary to talk about and reflect on "Another Earth" 50 years later, him interacting with the original musicians, and his role as a bandleader. Also, reflect on the life of Roy Hargrove, and his role as a composer and jazz educator.

New York trumpeter, composer, and arranger Charles Tolliver’s first album in eleven years, Connect, will be released July 31 on Gearbox Record. WBGO recently premiered the first single from the album entitled ‘Blue Soul’, saying that the music has “so much driving urgency” and calling it “a hard-boppish tune with a backbeat groove.”

This was Charles Tolliver's first album as a leader. The setting is unique only because his second Freedom-Black Lion album 'The Ringer' and all of his subsequent albums on Strata-East featured his quartet Music Inc. with pianist Stanley Cowell. Here he is surrounded in quartet and quintet formats with a truly stellar cast of the leading players on the New York jazz scene. Charles plays the role of leader, composer and trumpeter. But it is surely that last role that deserves the most attention. The trumpet is a brass instrument that leans toward a hard sound and staccato phrasing. Yet Tolliver is the quintessence of fluidity. While it may be undeniable that he has learned from his musical heritage and past trumpet masters, a trumpeter of such flow, tone, control, lyricism and creativity is, by definition, a major musician.
