CherryTree for Windows
When it comes to note-taking applications, many people think of Evernote, Microsoft OneNote, or Google Keep. However, CherryTree offers something different. It is not just a simple note-taking app—it is a structured documentation tool designed for those who need hierarchical note organization, rich-text editing, and syntax highlighting. Unlike many modern note-taking apps that focus on…

I started writing "4 srs" this month and I like how free and accessible writing is, so I'm recommending free software I've experimented with that might help people who want to get into the hobby!
“Specifically Created for Writing Stories”
-------------------------------
Manuskript – Story organizer / word processor. Has an outliner and index card function, along with distraction free mode. Lets you switch between different templates such as a non-fiction mode or a short story.
Bibisco – Novel writing software that includes writing goals, world-building, distraction free mode, and a timeline.
“I Just Want to Write”
---------------------------
LibreOffice – Microsoft 365 alternative, but free! LibreOffice Writer is what I wrote this tumblr post in before I posted it. Also if you copy & paste the text into the Rich Text Editor on AO3, it seems that it actually converts it properly. Nice! No need for scripts.
Note-Taking
-------------------------------
Zim Wiki - note taking application that is very, very lightweight (1.1mb). It functions with a tree structure, so I’d personally recommend it for world-building and character bios. There are built-in plugins that also turn it into a good software for task management (it even has a article on how to use it for GTD) and journalling. See also: CherryTree (2mb), which is a more outdated-looking app, but functions similarly.
Obsidian MD – The Big Boy. markdown note editor that has been adopted by personal knowledge management fans---if it doesn’t do something you want it to do, just look in the community plugins to see if someone has already done it. Some unique non-word processing related usages I’ve found is the ability to create a table of contents dashboard, a image gallery for images, embedding youtube videos and timestamping notes, so forth.
Logseq – A bullet point based markdown note editor that also has PDF annotations, Zotero integration, flashcard creation, and whiteboards. Best used for outlining projects due to the bullet point structure.
Joplin – A modern app comparable to Zim Wiki, it’s basically just a note-taking software that uses folders and tags to sort easier. Looks prettier than Zim Wiki and Cherry Tree
Notion – An online-only website that allows usage of different database types. Free for personal use. Note: I dislike the AI updates that have been making the app lag more. I prefer the others on this list.
Mind Maps
-------------------------------
Freeplane – So much goddamn features, including a ton of add-ons. Looks somewhat ugly, but it works for anyone willing to spend a while learning how to use it.
Mermaid – Text-based diagram creator. Can be used in apps like Joplin, Notion, and Obsidian.
Obsidian’s Canvas – A core plugin for Obsidian, it deserves its own mention in that it allows you to create embedded notes of the mindmap nodes. Thus, if you want to create a 20-page long note and have it minimized to the size of a penny on the mindmap, you could.
Other Things That Might Be Of Interest
Syncthing - A free software that allows you to sync between two or more computers. Have a desktop but also laze around on a laptop in bed, coming up with ideas?? This is your buddy if you don't want to use a online software.

Release: August 10, 2010
Lyrics:
Shut up
(Konvict)
Shut your mouth and close the door
I wanna watch you while you take it off
I'm gonna take the blindfold, put it on
And then I drop the leather to the floor
I said, "Shut up"
Turning the lights out
Burning the candles
And the mirrors gon' fog tonight
Turning the lights out
Tighten the handcuffs
And the mirrors gon' fog tonight
My stiletto on your neck
Until I tie your hands above the bed
You're 'bout to
But boy, don't pull the trigger yet
Na-na-na
I haven't reloaded the clip
Na-na-na
Squeeze hard, hold that pose
You know I like it, do it
Sweetheart, I'm the boss
And when you get close to it
I'm gonna make tonight a show (oh-oh-oh)
I'll make your love grenade explode (na-na-na)
Turning the lights out
Burning the candles
And the mirrors gon' fog tonight
Turning the lights out
Tighten the handcuffs
And the mirrors gon' fog tonight
Turning the lights out
Burning the candles
And the mirrors gon' fog tonight
Turning the lights out
Tighten the handcuffs
And the mirrors gon' fog tonight (tonight)
Sex, love, control, vanity
Sex, love, control, vanity
Sex, love, control, vanity (and the mirrors gon' fog tonight)
Sex, love, control, vanity (and the mirrors gon' fog tonight)
Sex, love, control, vanity (and the mirrors gon' fall tonight)
Sex, love, control, vanity (the mirrors gon' fall tonight)
Vanity
Vanity
Squeeze hard, hold that pose
You know I like it, do it
Sweetheart, I'm the boss
And when you get close to it
I'm gonna make tonight a show (oh-oh-oh)
I'll make your love grenade explode (na-na-na)
Turning the lights out
Burning the candles
And the mirrors gon' fog tonight
Turning the lights out
Tighten the handcuffs
And the mirrors gon' fog tonight
Turning the lights out

SongFacts:
"Mirrors" is a song by the English recording artist Natalia Kills from her debut studio album, Perfectionist (2011). It was released by Cherrytree Records as the lead single from the album. The track was written and produced by Akon, Giorgio Tuinfort and Martin "Cherry Cherry Boom Boom" Kierszenbaum, with additional writing from Kills. Described as a "disco pop" song, "Mirrors" contains references to various themes including sexual sadomasochism and arrogance.
"Mirrors" was recorded at the 11th Street Studios, Chalice Recording Studios and Cherrytree Recording Studios. It was co-produced and co-written by Akon, Giorgio Tuinfort, and Martin "Cherry Cherry Boom Boom" Kierszenbaum; the latter two also recorded instruments for the song. Kills provided additional songwriting. Mark "Exit" Goodchild and Tony Ugyal engineered it, while post-production was helmed by Robert Orton and Gene Grimaldi. The former mixed the track, while the latter mastered it. "Mirrors" has been described as a "disco pop" song which features electric guitars, a bassline and a "grinding synthesised beat" and that the track "fuses bubbling '80s synth pop basslines, stadium rock guitars, and an anthemic falsetto chorus".
The French director Guillaume Doubet was commissioned to direct the video for "Mirrors", which was released on 2 December 2010. Idolator's Robbie Daw described it as "creepy" and "cinematic", and praised Kills' clothing.

As a Linux user, just saying "switch to Linux" is bonkers for most folks. Not because Linux is super difficult or cumbersome, but because enshittification of tech has deprecated and depreciated what it means to be a basic user. I had a conversation with a college student who was complaining about having to replace their phone every 3-5 years or so because their phone wouldn't be able to update to the latest version of their OS. When I said "you could just flash an alternative or aftermarket OS on it", they looked at me as though I was describing the various individual parts of the Hadron Collider. It wasn't because they lacked intellect, rather due to lack of knowledge and information. This person grew up with tablets and chromebooks with no right-click enabled, everything stored in 'the cloud' and a user interface almost entirely locked down. It's 'safe' and 'convenient' for underfunded IT departments, sure, but it also has a major drawback in that it asphyxiates curiosity and discovery. The computer, turned into a magic box of mystery that you're forbidden from opening up and exploring its guts. Comparing that to my early days messing with Novell login screens (anyone else remember sending messages to every other computer through that one feature?) and running games off of floppies we'd bring to school, and it's just disheartening. We got so many opportunities to enthusiastically learn and grow through what is today considered highly questionable and problematic activities; things we did that encouraged more learning, more discovering, more studying. Finding out about Linux in college was a revelation - I finally had the option to move beyond Windows and Apple; sure, I could fuck up my system - but that was MY choice, MY responsibility, and MY consequences. No one was grabbing my hand and forcing me into one specific path - I was free to blaze my own trail. Sometimes this resulted in having to do a full reinstall, or hunt down dependencies for some obscure program I read about in a forum. But that control made a substantial difference in how I viewed computers and mobile devices. Many folks don't switch to Linux because the tech industry has deliberately created (and continues to create) restrictive paths and controls, making users become entirely dependent on specific apps for increasingly basic tasks (e.g., listening to music, watching videos, creating documents/spreadsheets/presentations, communicating with other folks online, etc). It seems like every fucking company and their subsidiary has an app, often little more than window dressing augmenting their website. It's just really unfortunate that a lot of younger folks are kept in the dark as to what they can really do with computers; there is this somber feeling of being at the mercy of large tech corporations from many of them. As older folks we should be doing more to light the way towards systems that respect their privacy, their autonomy, their freedom; to encourage exploration and support of independent developers creating wonderful software (CherryTree, for example); and to support diverging from the mainstream. Younger folks aren't stupid, they've just grown up in an era where they're trapped in devices with planned obsolescence, arrested development, restricted and highly controlled user interfaces, and bellicose corporations with their finger hovering over the lawsuit button.
Telling young zoomers to "just switch to linux" is nuts some of these ipad kids have never even heard of a cmd.exe or BIOS you're throwing them to the wolves

"At Peak Bloom" … my newest ... The happy day has arrived in Washington DC. Each year, early spring finds residents and tourists alike watching the local weather forecast with eagle eyes hoping that the temperatures will be warm enough, the sun will shine brightly enough, and equally important, that the winds and rains will be gentle enough. When all Mother Nature's elements cooperate, the spectacle around the Tidal Basin in #WestPotomacPark, Washington DC, is breathtaking!!! Peak #bloom, usually only 2 or 3 days in the year, is a time of happy magic!! 3 Tools for Your Worldbuilder’s Toolkit

Are you new to worldbuilding and looking for some tools that can help you craft the perfect setting for your novel? NaNoWriMo Participant Jaluna Rolik shares some of her favorites with us!
Have you started worldbuilding yet, or are you planning to make it up as you go? Even pantsers should have some idea of the world they’re going to work in before they start!
Worldbuilding is a long, sometimes tedious, process, but it’s well worth the work. Even if your novel is set in a world that looks very similar to the one we live in, you’re probably going to want to do some worldbuilding to prepare. I generally work in worlds of my own creation. Today, I’d like to share some reasons worldbuilding can be useful, things you can include that might help you, and some (free!) tools that can be a great help in keeping it all together:
1. Keep track of your world’s calendar.
There are lots of reasons to worldbuild. Getting a feel for the cultures and calendar(s) of your world gives you more scenes you can include, ranging from religious festivals and rites to cultural anomalies or troubles that come from the social construct of your system. If you’ve got a lot of different kinds of magic, making a list of spells and methods to use magic can be a great worldbuilding exercise to keep you organized.
A great program for this is Google Sheets. I use it all the time to make calendars! Calendar-making is tedious and tough, but in a fantasy world that probably won’t match up with Earth, making a calendar for yourself so you can see when a character’s birthday is and when holidays come up can help you with events in your story based on the season. This may seem small, but it will help give your readers a more immersive experience.
2. Visualization is your friend.
I have a condition called aphantasia—which means that I have no ability to visualize things in my head. As such, visual constructs in front of me, such as maps, calendars, etc., are extremely vital for me to keep track of things without getting a headache. Thankfully, there are lots of resources out there to help people like me to worldbuild! I use plenty of different programs to help guide my worldbuilding. Here are some of the tools I use when building up my setting:
Notion is perfect free program for writers. You can either find a template specifically for worldbuilding, or you can make your own with all sorts of features, like lists, images, and even checklists if you think that would help you!
3. Keep your planning notes in order.
Worldbuilding can include almost anything—planning out the species of animals and plants, making languages for the different cultures of the world, time-lining the history of the world, and even denoting how the world was created. It’s all worldbuilding, and it all can have a great effect on your story’s potential!
Do you find Wikis really useful, or are you a fan of Microsoft Onenote but want a free option? Try CherryTree! It’s very customizable and it’s a great program to make your own nesting lists, note pages, and then some. I use it a lot, as I have a ton of religions planned out for one world that’s part of a lot of stories. I have the geography basics listed in it, as well, and some plot things, too.
So please, if you’re a planner, plantser, or even pantser, don’t skimp on worldbuilding. Plan anything and everything you think will make your world really feel like a reality for yourself and your readers—it’s sure to give a new layer to your story that will surely wow everyone—even yourself!

Jaluna Rolik was born and raised in New Jersey, and still lives there today. Though her life has certainly had some rough patches, she always does her best to find the positive in life's woes. In her endless free time, she can usually be seen playing video games, writing, or reading manga. She lives with her father, also a writer, who is always helping her through life's mysterious ways. Folllow her on Twitter!

Sting’s performance of “Por Su Amor,” the Spanish-language adaptation of his song “For Her Love” off his latest album “The Bridge,” will air on the 34th edition of Latin music’s longest-running awards show in the world on February 24. “Premio Lo Nuestro” coverage begins with the pre-show "Noche de Estrellas" at 7 p.m./6 CT on Univision. Inspired by the breathtaking Baja, California vistas and expansive blue of the Gulf of California, Sting recorded “Por Su Amor” on a recent visit to Cabo San Lucas, México. The Spanish lyrics were written by GRAMMY-nominated musician/ songwriter/producer Martin Kierszenbaum, co-writer of “For Her Love” and co-producer of The Bridge album with Sting. “Por Su Amor” also features backing vocals by Hannah Brier with Dominic Miller on guitar and Martin Kierszenbaum on keyboards.
