Since it's getting screenings in other countries too now, I highly, highly recommend you go watch the movie Ainda Estou Aqui aka I'm Still Here if you can. Not because of the Oscars but because of how relevant it still (unfortunately) is today.
The latter half of the 20th century saw a wave of US-backed military coup d'états sinking Latin America in decades of far-right authoritarian dictatorial regimes, who cooperated between themselves and the United States to coordinate the violent repression of "political enemies" that resulted in the torture, disappearance and murder of a still unknown total number of people, among them students, workers, activists, minorities, members of armed resistance groups and even members of the military themselves.
In 2014, Brazil's National Truth Comission officially reported 434 people as dead or missing. Additionally, around 20.000 brazilians are estimated to have been subjected to torture at the hands of the State. In practice, however, the numbers are much higher, and they don't even take the State's project of genocide against indigenous peoples into acount.
Keep in mind that the data I'm showing only corresponds to Brazil, but this was happening all over the continent, in Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, Peru, Ecuador. And even before the wave of coups in South America, the US had been doing the same thing in Central America and The Caribbean.
To this day, most of the perpetrators of this violence, despite being well known, never had to pay for their crimes. On the contrary, they're praised for it more often than we'd like, and all meanwhile thousands of families are to this day deprived of even as much as a body to bury.
This was never "a thing of the past", because Latin Americans are still very much suffering from the wounds inflicted on us during that time, we're reminded of them every day and we feel them every day, no matter how many far-right politicians and their minions try to deny it. Our countries haven't been treated as anything other than colonies since 1492.
The fact that these stories aren't too well known outside of our borders, along with the current political climate in the US and the rest of the world, and specially because of the internal efforts to erase them, I think now more than ever it's important to inform yourself, help keep those memories alive and fight alongside us.

X-ray images from our Chandra X-ray Observatory helped astronomers confirm that most of the oxygen in the universe is synthesized in massive stars. So, everybody say "thank you" to supernova remnants (SNRs) like this one, which has enough oxygen for thousands of solar systems.
Supernova remnants are, naturally, the remains of exploded stars. They're extremely important for understanding our galaxy. If it weren't for SNRs, there would be no Earth, no plants, animals, or people. This is because all the elements heavier than iron were made in a supernova explosion, so the only reason we find these elements on Earth or in our solar system — or any other extrasolar planetary system — is because those elements were formed during a supernova.

Earth-based telescopes offer a fresh look at cosmic dawn
Small telescopes in Chile are first on Earth to cut through the cosmic noise
For the first time, scientists have used Earth-based telescopes to look back over 13 billion years to see how the first stars in the universe affect light emitted from the Big Bang. 
Using telescopes high in the Andes mountains of northern Chile, astrophysicists have measured this polarized microwave light to create a clearer picture of one of the least understood epochs in the history of the universe, the Cosmic Dawn.
“People thought this couldn’t be done from the ground. Astronomy is a technology-limited field, and microwave signals from the Cosmic Dawn are famously difficult to measure,” said Tobias Marriage, project leader and a Johns Hopkins professor of physics and astronomy. “Ground-based observations face additional challenges compared to space. Overcoming those obstacles makes this measurement a significant achievement.”
Cosmic microwaves are mere millimeters in wavelength and very faint. The signal from polarized microwave light is about a million times fainter. On Earth, broadcast radio waves, radar, and satellites can drown out their signal, while changes in the atmosphere, weather, and temperature can distort it. Even in perfect conditions, measuring this type of microwave requires extremely sensitive equipment.
Scientists from the U.S. National Science Foundation’s Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor, or CLASS, project used telescopes uniquely designed to detect the fingerprints left by the first stars in the relic Big Bang light—a feat that previously had only been accomplished by technology deployed in space, such as the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) and European Space Agency Planck space telescopes.
The new research, led by Johns Hopkins University and the University of Chicago, was published today in The Astrophysical Journal.
By comparing the CLASS telescope data with the data from the Planck and WMAP space missions, the researchers identified interference and narrowed in on a common signal from the polarized microwave light. 
Polarization happens when light waves run into something and then scatter.
“When light hits the hood of your car and you see a glare, that’s polarization. To see clearly, you can put on polarized glasses to take away glare,” said first author Yunyang Li, who was a PhD student at Johns Hopkins and then a fellow at University of Chicago during the research. “Using the new common signal, we can determine how much of what we’re seeing is cosmic glare from light bouncing off the hood of the Cosmic Dawn, so to speak.” 
After the Big Bang, the universe was a fog of electrons so dense that light energy was unable to escape. As the universe expanded and cooled, protons captured the electrons to form neutral hydrogen atoms, and microwave light was then free to travel through the space in between. When the first stars formed during the Cosmic Dawn, their intense energy ripped electrons free from the hydrogen atoms. The research team measured the probability that a photon from the Big Bang encountered one of the freed electrons on its way through the cloud of ionized gas and skittered off course. 
The findings will help better define signals coming from the residual glow of the Big Bang, or the cosmic microwave background, and form a clearer picture of the early universe. 
“Measuring this reionization signal more precisely is an important frontier of cosmic microwave background research,” said Charles Bennett, a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor at Johns Hopkins who led the WMAP space mission. “For us, the universe is like a physics lab. Better measurements of the universe help to refine our understanding of dark matter and neutrinos, abundant but elusive particles that fill the universe. By analyzing additional CLASS data going forward, we hope to reach the highest possible precision that’s achievable.”
Building on research published last year that used the CLASS telescopes to map 75% of the night sky, the new results also help solidify the CLASS team’s approach.
"No other ground-based experiment can do what CLASS is doing," says Nigel Sharp, program director in the NSF Division of Astronomical Sciences which has supported the CLASS instrument and research team since 2010. "The CLASS team has greatly improved measurement of the cosmic microwave polarization signal and this impressive leap forward is a testament to the scientific value produced by NSF's long-term support."
The CLASS observatory operates in the Parque Astronómico Atacama in northern Chile under the auspices of the Agencia Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo.  
Other collaborators are at Villanova University, the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, the University of Chicago, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Argonne National Laboratory, the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, the University of Oslo, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of British Columbia. Collaborators in Chile are at the Universidad de Chile, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Universidad de Concepción, and the Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción.
The observatory is funded by the National Science Foundation, Johns Hopkins, and private donors.

In some of the work you’ve done on data centers, you talk about how AI is presented as a climate solution, even as it requires resource-intensive data centers and computing to power it. What do you think is the risk of presenting resource-intensive AI as a solution to climate change? This is something that’s already happening, which is basically the imposition of ecological visions of a few, especially in the Global North with private interests, onto the rest of the world. We can see this operating not only when it comes to data centers, but also lithium extraction. Lithium is used for rechargeable batteries, which is a key component of so-called transition technologies, such as electric vehicles. If we want to design a transition towards new forms of energy or less carbon-intensive energies, we need to cooperate with these communities and a very important actor are the ones that are participating in the AI value chain. Companies have a big interest in hiding this value chain, in making sure that these communities don’t have a voice in the media, in regulatory discussions, and so on, because this is crucial for their business model and for the technical capacities that they need. There is a big interest in silencing them. This is why they don’t provide information about what they do. It’s also very important that as we discuss AI governance or regulation, we ask how we can incorporate these communities. If you look at what’s happening in Europe, there is upcoming regulation that is going to request that companies provide some transparency when it comes to energy use. But what about something more radical? What about incorporating these communities in the very governance of data centers? Or if we really want more just technologies for environmental transition, why not have a collective discussion, incorporating actors from different contexts and regions of the world to discuss what will be the most efficient — if you want to use that word — way of allocating data centers. In the case of indigenous communities in the Atacama Desert, water is sacred. They have a special relationship with water. One of the few words that they still have is uma, which stands for water. So how do we make sure that these companies respect the way these communities relate to the environment? It’s impossible to think of any kind of transition without considering and respecting the ecological visions of these groups. I don’t really believe in any technologically intensive form of transition that’s made by technocrats in the Global North and that ignores the effects that these infrastructures are having in the rest of the world and the visions of these communities.

Explanation: What's happening in the lower arm of this spiral galaxy? A supernova. Last month, supernova SN 2023rve was discovered with UAE's Al-Khatim Observatory and later found to be consistent with the death explosion of a massive star, possibly leaving behind a black hole. Spiral galaxy NGC 1097 is a relatively close 45 million light years away and visible with a small telescope toward the southern constellation of the Furnace (Fornax). The galaxy is notable not only for its picturesque spiral arms, but also for faint jets consistent with ancient star streams left over from a galactic collision -- possibly with the small galaxy seen between its arms on the lower left. The featured image highlights the new supernova by blinking between two exposures taken several months apart. Finding supernovas in nearby galaxies can be important in determining the scale and expansion rate of our entire universe -- a topic currently of unexpected tension and much debate.

In an interview with Jornal da USP no Ar 1ª Edição , Professor Adriana Marotti de Mello from the School of Economics, Administration, Accounting and Actuarial Science (FEA) at the University of São Paulo says that the replacement that many countries are making of internal combustion vehicles has to do with the dependence on oil imports, their energy sources and also the commitments that these countries have to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, such as improving energy efficiency.
“Here in Brazil, we have had a renewable fuel alternative since the 1970s, which is ethanol. That is why we do not have a more urgent need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by replacing petroleum in vehicle use, nor are we heavily dependent on imports, since Brazil is an oil producer,” she says. According to her, this explains the lack of action by federal, state and municipal governments to seek a transition to vehicles — especially passenger vehicles — that use a lot of ethanol.

born in chile to a large, loving family, santiago is the oldest of five. esmerelda, his mother, is and always was a force to be reckoned with. she was the head of the house, despite never working outside it once she had her children. esmerelda kept everyone in line, including his father alberto, until his passing. she never took any shit from anyone while still making time to love and nurture her entire family. if you ask santiago, it was her he admired most and tries to take after her example ( a mami’s boy through and through ) but there is too much of his father in him to be ignored. alberto was an ultra survivalist, skills he passed onto his children but it was clear that santiago proved to be the most interested, soaking up every piece of knowledge he would give him. self-reliance, resourcefulness, and being able to read your surroundings were the biggest things he got from his father. it would be these skills that made him into a master tracker which was later sharpened to near perfection in the chilean army and eastern atlantic army special forces after that. santiago is a healthy amount of both of his parents with a mix of his own quirks and values. needless to say, his childhood was good. there were expectations as any family has but they were not unreasonable for santiago to meet and mistakes were treated as learning opportunities to improve on.
his familia was his life in so many ways. he was constantly surrounded by siblings, cousins, aunties, uncles, grandparents, and their friends and of course any found family that someone adopted in. community was made to be of upmost importance next to family and school. by the time santiago graduated and joined the chilean military, he was already a well-rounded young man. though, he wouldn’t lie and say he didn’t let loose in his free time once he was out in the world, something no one could ever quite train out of him. after a few years with the chilean military, he was uniquely recruited by the eastern atlantic army, something he accepted as a promising opportunity. he went through the training they required to get him into the field. once he held that status they were able to recruit him into special forces where he trained heavily in psyops and intelligence. it was necessary for him to be able to help read people well and collect data while they helped secure peace in this new environment they were thrust into. he helped create infrastructure, neutralize threats before they started, suggested better ways to improve situations, and streamlined those who needed the most help to the right resources.
what he didn’t know, was afterglow’s role in everything and once he was out of his twenties, it became clear to him that not only was the eastern atlantic army heavily associated with afterglow but they were involved in quite a few things he simply did not agree with and could not support. because of that, he took the first opportunity he could to retire and moved into the private field, primarily helping track people down that had gone missing but also protection services and information gathering. this meant being able to stay in touch with the many contacts they’d already made over the years and make more. such as dante winters and his squadron. there was a real camaraderie already established with dante, he’d become like a brother in many ways and they knew they could count on each other, like when santiago needed help getting what was left of his family into the eastern atlantic region after devastating storms and desolation hit the coastline of chile. just like he would always be there to help dante anyway he could. santiago tries to help anyone he is able to but when it comes to those closest to him, there’s very little that stops him short of death. 
it was one such call from dante that led to meeting one of the most important people in his life. lindsay came into his life at a rough time. the man had recently lost his unit in a devastating way. it was pain santiago could understand. luckily he was in a position in multiple ways, as it turned out he was looking for the man he was going to see. on the way to their destination, the two of them got incredibly close, santiago fell in love with lindsay quite easily, in fact and they’ve been together ever since. though, he wasn’t sure they would be when they arrived to find out that lindsay’s sister had passed away, leaving his nibling an orphan. the only good news santiago had to offer was he’d tracked down dante’s wife and child. which brought them back to the eastern atlantic once again, this time to appalachia.
together they’ve formed their own family unit. santiago forming a special bond with maisie, doing what he could to help support them through their grief and lindsay in raising them into the wonderful, imaginative, and adventurous person they’d grown to be. together they continued to search for odette, relocate family members, and eventually formed the silver lining militia to start to combat some of the major problems that come with a megacorporation running a country ( especially when it was likely responsible, in part, for destroying it in the first place ). despite the state of the world, santiago has made time to be happy and allow himself to be happy in the small moments. truly it is the only thing that keeps him both grounded and waking up in the morning because otherwise he thinks he would drive himself crazy trying to repair the problems in the world. he does hope to make the most impact he’s able to as one man, though and will continue to do so until he cannot anymore.

World's Rarest Whale Washes Up On New Zealand Beach
The body of a spade-toothed whale — a species so rare it has never been seen alive — appears to have washed up on a New Zealand beach, scientists say.
The remains of the obscure, five-metre (16.4 foot) long, beaked creature were found near a river mouth in southern Otago province on July 4, government researchers said.

It was identified by marine-mammal experts from New Zealand’s Department of Conservation and the national museum, Te Papa, as a male spade-toothed whale.
A DNA investigation has been launched to confirm its classification, the scientists said.
“Spade-toothed whales are one of the most poorly known large mammalian species of modern times,” said the conservation department’s coastal Otago operations manager, Gabe Davies.
“Since the 1800s, only six samples have ever been documented worldwide, and all but one of these was from New Zealand,” Davies said in a statement Monday.
“From a scientific and conservation point of view, this is huge.”
The find was fresh enough to offer the first opportunity for a spade-toothed whale to be dissected, the conservation department said.
The species is “so rare next to nothing is known about them”, it said.
The body of the whale has been placed in cold storage and genetic samples have been sent to the University of Auckland as curators of the New Zealand Cetacean Tissue Archive.
It may take several weeks or months for the DNA to be processed and a final identification confirmed.
“The rarity of the whale means conversations around what to do next will take more time because it is a conversation of international importance,” the conservation department said.
The species was first described in 1874 from just a lower jaw and two teeth collected from the Chatham Islands off the east coast of New Zealand.
That sample, along with skeletal remains of two other specimens found in New Zealand and Chile, enabled scientists to confirm a new species.
Marine scientist Vanessa Pirotta said researchers would study the whale’s stomach contents, genetics, and how this sample compared to previous ones.
This could shine light on the whales’ behaviour, their population and why they are so rare, Pirotta told AFP, describing the discovery as “like hitting the jackpot”.
Because so few specimens have been found and there have been no live sightings, little is known about the spade-toothed whale and it is classified as “data deficient” under New Zealand’s Threat Classification System.
The first intact specimen was from a mother and calf stranding in Bay of Plenty in 2010, the New Zealand conservation department said.
A further stranding in 2017 in Gisborne added one more specimen to the collection.

I haven't said anything here yet, but if you noticed me being slower than usual, it is because in the past couple of months I've been dealing with bad anxiety and stress due to my thesis, together with an infection that last month landed me in the ER with antibiotics and a medical leave due to generalized stress, which I didn't handle well either. I am fine now, recovering and trying to take things slow.
Meamwhile, my main hard disk storage suffered major hardware damage the last week of June, stupid me forgot to do a backup 🫠
Data recovery is too expensive, so I consider most of it lost until I can do it myself... The data lost includes most of my art original files, as well as unpublished art, new projects AND ongoing commissions. So I will be working on recovering most through social media and discord, meanwhile contacting clients.

Two of the longest-running pieces of research in medicine are the Whitehall studies, the first of which began before Stafford Beer ever set foot in Chile. Whitehall I, from 1967 to 1977, recorded the general health outcomes of 17,500 male British civil servants; Whitehall II, ongoing since 1985, widened the remit to include women; both cohorts have been followed up and re-examined over the years. Michael Marmot, who led the first study and initiated the second one, made an extremely interesting discovery. One of the strongest predictors of serious mortality outcomes – heart attacks, strokes, cancer – was the civil service grade that someone occupied. The very large sample size allows you to eliminate the effects of income, smoking, family history and a lot of other things and be sure that this is a separate effect. And social status (as represented by the civil service grade) is itself highly correlated with unhealthy behaviours, in a way that doesn’t appear to be related to education, intelligence or any other variables that might be associated with self-control. This ‘social gradient’ seems to be there in data from other countries, too. Marmot ended up concluding that the psychic feeling of being in control of your life is extremely important as a source of well-being, and that conversely, being out of control is physiologically harmful as well as emotionally intolerable.

It's from 2021 and details part of a continuing feminist activism again the Pinochet regime and its aftereffects. (For those who don't know, Pinochet was a Chilean military dictator from 1973 to 1990. His regime was horrifying in all the ways you'd expect, and possibly in some ways you can't imagine, including extreme forms of sadism, sexual violence, and torture.) Chilean feminists are advocating against the ongoing state sexual violence, domestic violence, and widespread public sexual harassment.
