in addition to being prone to an obvious naturalistic fallacy, the oft-repeated claim that various supplements / herbs / botanicals are being somehow suppressed by pharmaceutical interests seeking to protect their own profits ('they would rather sell you a pill') belies a clear misunderstanding of the relationship between 'industrial' pharmacology and plant matter. bioprospecting, the search for plants and molecular components of plants that can be developed into commercial products, has been one of the economic motivations and rationalisations for european colonialism and imperialism since the so-called 'age of exploration'. state-funded bioprospectors specifically sought 'exotic' plants that could be imported to europe and sold as food or materia medica—often both, as in the cases of coffee or chocolate—or, even better, cultivated in 'economic' botanical gardens attached to universities, medical schools, or royal palaces and scientific institutions.
this fundamental attitude toward the knowledge systems and medical practices of colonised people—the position, characterising eg much 'ethnobotany', that such knowledge is a resource for imperialist powers and pharmaceutical manufacturers to mine and profit from—is not some kind of bygone historical relic. for example, since the 1880s companies including pfizer, bristol-myers squibb, and unilever have sought to create pharmaceuticals from african medicinal plants, such as strophanthus, cryptolepis, and grains of paradise. in india, state-created databases of valuable 'traditional' medicines have appeared partly in response to a revival of bioprospecting since the 1980s, in an increasingly bureaucratised form characterised by profit-sharing agreements between scientists and local communities that has nonetheless been referred to as "biocapitalism". a 1990 paper published in the proceedings of the novartis foundation symposium (then the ciba foundation symposium) spelled out this form of epistemic colonialism quite bluntly:
Ethnobotany, ethnomedicine, folk medicine and traditional medicine can provide information that is useful as a 'pre-screen' to select plants for experimental pharmacological studies.
there is no inherent oppositional relationship between pharmaceutical industry and 'natural' or plant-based cures. there are of course plenty of examples of bioprospecting that failed to translate into consumer markets: ginseng, introduced to europe in the 17th century through the mercantile system and the east india company, found only limited success in european pharmacology. and there are cases in which knowledge with potential market value has actually been suppressed for other reasons: the peacock flower, used as an abortifacient in the west indies, was 'discovered' by colonial bioprospectors in the 18th century; the plant itself moved easily to europe, but knowledge of its use in reproductive medicine became the subject of a "culturally cultivated ignorance," resulting from a combination of funding priorities, national policies, colonial trade patterns, gender politics, and the functioning of scientific institutions. this form of knowledge suppression was never the result of a conflict wherein bioprospectors or pharmacists viewed the peacock flower as a threat to their own profits; on the contrary, they essentially sacrificed potential financial benefits as a result of the political and social factors that made abortifacient knowledge 'unknowable' in certain state and commercial contexts.
exploitation of plant matter in pharmacology is not a frictionless or infallible process. but the sort of conspiratorial thinking that attempts to position plant therapeutics and 'big pharma' as oppositional or competitive forces is an ahistorical and opportunistic example of appealing to nominally anti-capitalist rhetoric without any deeper understanding of the actual mechanisms of capitalism and colonialism at play. this is of course true whether or not the person making such claims has any personal financial stake in them, though it is of course also true that, often, they do hold such stakes.

Mrs. Shelby - Chapter Two- First Shot
Fic Masterlist

December 1914, Birmingham:
As I settled into life within the Shelby household, it became apparent that observing and adapting were my best courses of action. Even though their workforce was currently absent due to the war, the Shelbys were far from ordinary laborers. When Polly and I went out shopping, I noticed passersby respectfully addressing her as "Good morning, Mrs. Grey." I had encountered workers in my grandfather's factory, but they never held such prestige and status. "Mrs. Grey," "Mrs. Shelby," "Miss Shelby" – the Shelby surname wielded an almost magical influence in Birmingham. I was beginning to grasp their line of work. The Shelbys were undoubtedly the same sort of people who had caused my father endless headaches and filled Nurse Claire with terror. Truth be told, when I had a clear understanding of their activities two months ago, I couldn't help but shudder. Gangsters weren't much better than brothels or No. 10 King's Road. It was akin to moving from one perilous situation to another. If my father knew that his little princess had landed in such a predicament, it would break his heart.
But as time passed, my perspective on the past 15 years began to shift. Yes, they were gangsters who earned their living through gambling, extortion, and collecting protection money. However, wasn't that the way of the world? How could they support such a vast family on meager factory wages? They relied on squeezing ordinary people to secure a better life, just as gangsters, politicians, and capitalists did. In essence, nobility was not fundamentally distinct; it boiled down to whether one's actions were legal or not. But who decided what was legal? If the law itself was one-sided and severe, where did justice originate? My noble relatives had either aimed to divide my inheritance due to my parents' demise or had avoided me for the same reason. After I was rebuffed when seeking aid from my aunt and uncle, I disregarded Nurse Claire's objections and ventured north alone. Furthermore, the Shelbys, the gangsters I had tried to avoid in the past, hadn't treated me unkindly. Even without the title of Baroness, I could still enjoy white bread, bacon, and chocolate that factory workers could only dream of.
After work, I'd rest on a comfortable bed by a warm fireplace. While it might not have been on par with my previous accommodations, it was leagues ahead of my recent fugitive lifestyle. All of this was thanks to the Shelbys, particularly Polly. Although she wore the mantle of the family's matriarch and appeared stern, she was not the kind of boss who criticized her employees relentlessly. In fact, she displayed more consideration for her workers than my maternal grandfather or the officials of the East India Company ever did. Beneath her veneer of cold and ruthless efficiency lay a softer, more compassionate core. While she hadn't immediately believed my story, like Ada and Martha, she had at least not sent me back to London, albeit explaining it as not wanting to "waste money on strangers."
Martha, with her oval face, was Finn and Ada's sister-in-law. Apart from her slightly protruding blue eyes, she was rather attractive. With three children to support and one more on the way, Martha was the only member of the family who could appreciate the poetry collection I had purchased with my earnings. She was kind and gentle, and she, along with Bo, regularly attended church services and provided food for the less fortunate in our community. She claimed to have been a pastor's daughter in the past, but her actions contradicted that background. I had encountered pastors before, and none of them resembled Martha. It was evident that she, too, grappled with hardship on the fringes of society.
As time passed, I found myself missing the life of a young lady from when my parents were alive. However, my new existence no longer held the same allure it had when I first escaped, and I refrained from incessantly comparing it to my past. These two months had wrought profound changes in me, challenging nearly every preconceived notion I held. Virtue and vice were not permanent fixtures in this world; no one could lay claim to absolute goodness or wickedness. It was a realm governed by natural selection, survival of the fittest. Initially, I had found this concept to be harsh, but now I recognized it as the unvarnished truth.
I no longer concealed my past. I had come from a privileged background. For the first fifteen years of my life, I had been a sheltered heiress. My sole misfortune was having a contingent of ill-fated relatives. Initially, Polly had tasked me with maintaining the household accounts and teaching the children arithmetic and reading. The Shelby family possessed few books, and the poetry collection I had purchased wasn't suitable for educational purposes. Thus, I had to buy a newspaper each morning during our grocery trips. I learned to read at the breakfast table, gradually absorbing the words.
My father had always read newspapers, both in English and German. Perhaps because my investigation had been thorough, Polly gradually began granting me access to the Shelby family's external accounts. These documents contained receipts related to horse racing, protection money, and dealings with the police station. It wasn't easy for Polly. The war had not ended as swiftly as we had anticipated, and the cost of living was steadily rising. Finn and his three nephews were still quite young. Ada had no desire to engage in the family's "business." Martha was pregnant and exceedingly gentle. This left Polly as the family's sole provider, responsible for the entire household. She had to be tough when dealing with others, ensuring her family's betterment, only to return home and seek solace in her prayer room. She was good to me, and as December approached, I planned a surprise for her on Christmas.
However, what could I possibly offer? As Bo grew more comfortable with me, I found myself assuming additional responsibilities. I had become the Shelby family's accountant, tutor, nanny, and even their cook. Despite the decent life I was leading and the kindness shown to me by the Shelbys, I still felt like an outsider. Perhaps it was because I couldn't master the art of smoking or tolerate the pungent taste of whiskey, or maybe it was because I couldn't casually toss around expletives as freely as the others did.
One day, as I finished my work and wandered the streets lost in thought, I suddenly heard Ada's scream, "How dare you! We're Shelbys!" My heart clenched in anxiety. Despite her upbringing in this environment, Ada retained an underlying romanticism and innocence that even surpassed my own. "Oh my God!" I recalled Martha mentioning the family's intention to confront Liz Stark today. I found the address and knocked on the door with urgency. Upon entering, I was greeted by chaos. "Ada!" I called out, searching for her. Please, let them be safe!
"Diana! Get your filthy hands off!" I hurried upstairs but found myself unable to open the locked door. It was then that the person who had let me in followed me up. He was tall and bald, with sparse black hair on his forehead. Even his touch on my forearm made my stomach turn. "Unlock the door," I demanded,
withdrawing the pistol from my bag and aiming it at his belly. It was a firearm Polly Shelby had loaned me, and I hadn't returned it yet. My hands trembled; it marked my first time pointing a gun at a living being. I feared that his appearance was deceptive, that he possessed greater strength than me, that I wasn't capable enough. I was anxious about getting entangled in a violent confrontation. I worried that my impulsiveness might harm Liz Stark, preventing her from earning a living. All these fears churned within me.
He seemed to notice my apprehension and boldly placed his other hand on my waist. I clenched my teeth, loaded the pistol, and jabbed it into his gut with determination. "Unlock the door for me—now!" He reluctantly acquiesced, fumbling with the key, and I allowed him to depart before rushing into the room.
Inside, I found Ada protecting Martha, while Liz Stark was being held by the hair and struggling. Another man had his back to me, undoing his belt, and turned around when he heard the door open. "Oh! We've got another visitor." He smirked, his mouth tainted by yellow nicotine stains. His lewd words, ones I didn't fully comprehend, made the man holding Stark's hair burst into laughter. "It was you who begged for this…" he muttered.
"Bam!" In a decisive moment, I fired my first shot at a living person, striking the man in the left thigh. He screamed and crumpled to the ground, clutching his injured leg and wailing like a banshee. The stench of blood and urine filled the small, enclosed space, nauseating me. I struggled to suppress the urge to vomit and aimed the gun squarely at the remaining assailant's head, "Release them. Let them go!" After firing the first shot, my hands steadied, and I possessed a firmer grip on the gun. This time, I pointed it directly at him.
"Don't mess with the Shelbys, not even with a woman." I declared firmly. Afterward, when I returned to 6 Waterley Lane, I rushed to the bathroom and, with as much grace as I could muster, promptly emptied my stomach. Gazing into the mirror afterward, I couldn't help but feel a sense of strangeness. The girl with black hair in the reflection looked pale, her mouth smeared with remnants of vomit and dirt. As I raised my hand, she mimicked the motion. I had genuinely transformed.
Martha convinced Ada and me to rest, and I prepared mulled wine for both of us. We huddled together, wrapped in blankets, sipping our drinks in silence by the warm fireplace. I, or perhaps we, were awaiting Polly's return. A gunshot had rung out; a man had been shot in a brothel, nearly disfigured. It was odd that neither Liz Stark nor Polly Shelby had received word of it. Perhaps Polly would dismiss me at the height of the impending storm, perhaps she'd grow infuriated over my use of the Shelby name. Regardless, I needed to explain myself face-to-face.
"Why did you use a gun?" Ada's question broke the silence, interrupting my reverie.
"What?" I hesitated, unable to meet her gaze, fearful that she might perceive me as a ruthless assailant.
"I noticed you often drift into thought... I mean, why did you use a gun?"
"My father taught me to hunt, ma'am, and I know how to use a shotgun." I replied, averting her eyes.
Another uncomfortable silence ensued, eventually broken by Polly Shelby's return.
Upon seeing her in the living room, relief washed over me. Even if she decided to expel me, I wouldn't be left homeless.
"Are you alright?" She checked on Ada before turning to me. I watched as she examined me, patiently waiting for her verdict.
"Go get some rest, Ada."
"Don't blame her, Aunt Polly. It was for me and Juliet that Diana fired." Polly remained silent but gave Ada's shoulder a reassuring pat before pouring herself a glass of wine. Despite the uncertainty of what lay ahead, I exchanged a reassuring glance with Ada.
"Why did you use a gun?" It seemed everyone was curious about a young woman who could wield a firearm, especially considering my age.
"My father taught me to hunt, ma'am, and I know how to use a shotgun."
"You rarely speak of your past," Polly noted, and I confessed, "But you never asked, ma'am."
Polly smiled, "I wasn't interested in a secretary's past before, but it's different now."
"My name is Diana Elizabeth Turner. My father was Baron Charles Turner, and my mother was Elizabeth Barton. I have an older brother, a younger brother, and a younger sister." I shared this information as Polly's gaze remained fixed on me.
She then put down her cup and embraced me. At that moment, tears welled up, and I allowed myself to cry. I did know how to use a shotgun, but the first time I had threatened someone with a gun, I was terrified. Fear had consumed me, fearing that his appearance concealed great strength, fearing that I wouldn't be effective enough, fearing I would become embroiled in violence, fearing for Liz Stark's safety, fearing Martha and Ada might view me as a merciless demon, and fearing Polly Shelby might expel me from her home or send me back to King's Road.
"Silly girl, go rest." Polly comforted me.
"Madam, are you going to send me away?" I asked, my tears finally subsiding.
Polly seemed to find my question amusing. "Why would I send you away? Because you protected my family?"
"Silly girl, right now, the Shelbys only need to use their guns to show Birmingham that even when the men are away, the Shelbys are untouchable. Besides, you and I are the only ones in this household who can handle a firearm."
Following that day, Polly asked me to address her as "Polly" or, like Ada and the others, as "Aunt Polly." On Christmas Eve, Polly presented me with a gift. She instructed me not to open it until everyone else had retired to their rooms. Inside the box was an elegant lady's pistol.
"The old gun I lent you belonged to Tommy. This one is more suitable for you," Polly explained, her cheeks slightly flushed from wine. "Just remember, don't let the children see it, let alone play with it, unless it's empty."
I held the unloaded pistol in my hands, examining it, and then looked up at Polly, questioning, "Who is Tommy?"
"Oh, I forgot to tell you. Tommy is one of Finn and Ada's nephews, the second brother. All three brothers enlisted in the army. Tommy is a handsome young lad, inheriting his mother's striking blue eyes." Polly remarked, gazing at me. "You bear a striking resemblance to him."
"Really?" I responded, my fingers tracing the contours of the gun, my gaze still locked onto the pistol. Polly's words had left me pensive, and I couldn't find the right words to reply.
The town bell chimed, signaling midnight. I leaned down and planted a kiss on Polly Shelby's cheek. "Merry Christmas, Aunt Polly."

The Toxic relationship between America and England As Told by Me Which Will Have Many Questionable Oversimplifications Due To the Lack of Time I Currently Have Before My Last Final Paper For A Different Class is Due: a story told by me. Tagging @igotthisaccountunderduress bc she asked for this specifically and now must suffer the consequences
Source: My history notes and a chat where I have infodumped all this to my best friend who has somehow still put up with all of my ramblings. If people would like I can and will make a series out of this with more actual research because Damn History is so much more interesting when it's not for the grade and stress and finals (like I love the tea, love the reciepts, but to memorize all of it on top of other things? *stress ensues*
((Under cut))
There was a war. There have been many wars. But during this period of like literally forever ago England, Spain, and France really just couldn't stop bickering at each other like siblings. This became more problematic when Spain started getting Colonies in this New World after the whole Christopher Columbus shenanigans (Fun fact: Isabel and Ferdinand really only sponsored like 20% or 30% of Columbus' original costs; Columbus still had to like find the other major chunk of it through sponsorships and donations). But anyway Columbus Task Failed Successfully and discovers Not India/Spice Islands but ~a whole new world~ (so many more shenanigans with that Columbus had to straight up lie to his crew multiple times to stop mutinies from happening I want to read his diaries at some point bc the more things I hear the more intrigued I get). But anyway Spain gets a lot of shiny new income in plenty of resources, spices, diseases, tomatoes, chocolate, etc.
England and France get jealous. France is like "omg I want some" and they go to Not The Spice Islands via the fabled "Northwest Passage" and get to canada and make bank off fur trading. England however in true Chaotic Sibling Fashion originally goes "why would I need to go over to America when I can just steal from France and Spain"
and thus PIRACYYYYYYY yo ho ho ho and a bottle of rum for meeeee
Spain and France are (unsurprisingly) Not Cool with this whole "sharing is caring" attitude of England and again more wars start. England in the meantime decides it wants to get its stuff together and allows the prototypes of corporations called Joint Stock Companies (basically a bunch of people would share the risks and the reward of running a business) that lead to the Virginia Colony. There were also people who were cashing in royal debts in exchange for land in the new world (the Calverts who started Maryland who wanted to Bring Back The Feudal system and that went so well for them *cough cough*/sarcasm) and a bunch of people who wanted to ability to Practice Their Religion Better than Other People (there was religious persecution when Queen Elizabeth was reigning during the Great Migration of people to America but from my understanding it was more like she didn't care what you did if you were loyal to England but also that is literally only from my professor and I have heard conflicting stories with other professors soooooo take this with a heavy grain of salt).
Anyway now with income coming in from the Americas both Spain and France and England are doing relatively well for themselves. And then guess what happens. Ah yes, more jealous and fighting. In this case, it's over the Ohio Valley Area because both countries wanted to expand their holdings in the new World. Basically this area touched Canada and France is like "C’est à moi" and England's like "GET YOUR TOASTY BAGUETTES AWAY FROM MY LAND" This leads to what we call here the French and Indian War (also called the Seven Years War in Europe I think, a lot of wars have American Names vs European names). Despite being called "The French and Indian War" here, it was fought by England and their Indian Allies and French and their Indian allies. England wins but at what cost?
The cost is money. It's always money. Now everyone has super heavy debt as a sum of like four(five?) wars that are fought in this period of time. England is now trying to raise funds to help get themselves out of the mess they put themselves into. Their solution: make America Pay Rent. Kind of a "we fought this war for *you* actually now give us money for it.
Note: they were only trying to raise part of the money for it via Direct Taxes which are taxes added on top of the price (which btdubs they were paying taxes to England already they were pay just English Version of Taxes which are built into the price so you don't know how much if it is taxes. They were fine with that. They just didn't want extra taxes. So this made them reevaluate their whole relationship with England. It didn't also help that England was starting to revoke some of the major perks like support past the appalachian mountain range, and among other things).
this tulmultuous period can be summed up with (an overgeneralization):
England: *tries to control America over much by being like 'you have to pay taxes on this this and this*
America: fine *just doesn't buy anything from England period until England recants and is like fine you don't have to pay this tax*
England: *plays the jealous girlfriend card* "you can only trade with England!!! No one else!!!
America, the two-timer: *increases smuggling* Also radical terrorists//the sons of liberty start crying for independence (Takes a Long Time For anyone to Listen to them Because Why Would They Rebellion is a stupid idea)
The East India Company thing was such a whole thing that kinda highlights this to an extreme. East India Company was part of the joint stock company that was about to go under because they had taken loans from like literally almost every bank in England. Which if they failed would be REALLY bad news for England. So in an attempt to lower cost, England told East India company that they could bring their tea from india to America directly instead of having to go through british ports as was custom. America took one look at the now So much Cheaper Tea and was like "mmmm sus" and didn't buy it in favor of dutch tea so RIP east India Company. Also Terrorist Group from before burned several of the ships while being disguised as Indians (no one was buying it) and that's what we call the boston tea party. England shut down Boston as they should and basically war ideas were spreading really quickly through new england and further onward (south was less so but they came around).
Anyway. I realize this comes off as very-anti American and it's really not meant to be, both countries were really annoying to each other throughout this whole process. But yeh then theirs gunshots and a declaration of independence and then we barely win by the skin of our teeth (that's mainly bc british merchants were like stop this we can't make money if you're fighting with our best customers at the end) and things get only stranger from there. First modern Democratic Republic so things were bound to get...very wonky.

Chapter 24 - Family Dinner
"Girls' night!!" Penelope cheered as she burst through the door.  "Wow!  This place is a palace!" she continued without letting me greet her.  "I see now why you were so quick to move here."  Remembering she was here for me and not Emily's house, she turned to look at me for the first time since bursting through the door.  She squealed loudly as she rushed to wrap me in her arms.
"Hi, Pen," I chuckled.
"I brought nail polish!  Don't say no to pedicures."
"I wouldn't dare.  It's girls' night, after all."  I knew better than to argue with Penelope.  Plus, I hadn't seen her in ages.  I was looking forward to a crazy night in with her.  Emily was away on a case, so we had the house to ourselves.
I connected my phone to Emily's expensive sound system and clicked Penelope and I's shared playlist.  "So tell me what's new!" I demanded.  "I feel so behind in your life."
"Ugh!  I hate my job."  My eyes widened in surprise.  I thought Penelope was still enjoying her job.
"What happened?"
"I'm one gross comment away from quitting.  My boss is a total misogynist and the only other woman in the office is so rude; she makes my life miserable."
"You'd think she'd be nice in order to make friends with the only other woman," I interrupted.
"You would think that!  But no.  She's just a mega-twat hellbent on making work a nightmare.  I mean, whatever happened to women supporting women?"
"What a bitch," I commiserated.
"Ugh, you know I hate that word.  But yes.  She is a bitch."  I was shocked to actually hear her say that out loud.  This woman really must be making Pen's life hell.
"I'm sorry, Pen," I said seriously.  Penelope was the greatest thing in the world; she didn't deserve this.  "Do you really think you'll quit?"
She sighed dramatically.  "Maybe.  I'd just like to have a job lined up before I quit, but if it gets any worse, I may just quit and live off of savings for a few weeks.  We'll see."
"Em's well-connected.  Want me to ask if she knows of anyone hiring?"  Surely Emily wouldn't object to putting a reference in.
"If it's not too much trouble...yeah, that'd be great," she agreed.
Suddenly, I was nervous.  How in the world was I supposed to describe what Penelope did so Emily could ask around when I, myself, had no idea what she did?  "Er..." I started, "I think you'll have to better describe what you do because I do not understand your computer genius..."
She chuckled.  "Oh my sweet, sweet maestro.  I'll write it down.  If I decide to let Emily help.  I don't want to take advantage of her connections..."
"There's no harm in asking.  Plus, that's what networking's all about.  Em says it's impossible to get a job in this city without it."  She still didn't look convinced.  "I'm sorry you're so miserable, Pen."
"Oh I'm not completely miserable," she said with a smirk.  "I've got my sweet chocolate thunder to keep me company after work."
"Oh!" I gasped in surprise.  "That's still going on?"
"Yes!  Why?" she asked, her eyes narrowing in skepticism.  "What have you heard?"
"That's just it, nothing.  From you or Em.  I just assumed it was a one night thing."
"Yeah," she chuckled, a dreamy look in her eyes.  "That was the plan.  But he's just so...well you've seen him."
I laughed.  "Yes, he's very...handsome," I finished lamely.
Penelope scoffed.  "'Handsome!'  What a joke.  He is-"
"I know!" I interrupted her before she could go off on a tangent.  "He is a Greek God sent down just for you," I teased.  "But you're happy?"  That's all that mattered to me.
Her smile turned more sincere, less joking.  "Yeah," she said softly.  "I'm happy."  I beamed at her.   "Except!" she said holding up a finger, "These profilers are killin' me!  I'm sure you can relate," she joked.
I furrowed my brow.  "What do you mean?"
"I mean that I can't get away with anything!  Derek always knows what's in my head.  It's like he's a mind reader," she clarified with a roll of her eyes.
I chuckled.  Yes, I certainly could relate to not being able to hide anything from my profiler.  "Yeah, that's irritating sometimes," I fibbed.  I couldn't help the soft smile that crept over my face at thoughts of Emily.  I didn't think it was irritating at all.  I loved that Emily always knew what I was feeling; I loved that Emily always knew exactly what I needed.
Penelope gasped.  "You are one smitten kitten."
"What!" I protested.  "I am not!"  I did my best to hide how happy Emily was making me.  "You know what this is, Pen."  Though things had changed, we hadn't discussed a timeline.  I was still operating under the assumption that this was all going to disappear at the end of my four months.  One more month of Emily – that's all I was entitled to.
"Yeah," she said a bit disappointed.  "But you know what fixes all?"  She paused, waiting for my response.  I waited for some vulgar statements about her and Derek's sex life, but was pleasantly surprised to hear, "Brownies for dinner!  I brought a mix."
We raced over to the kitchen, and I started pulling bowls and mixing spoons out.  "Hey Pen?"
"What's up, buttercup?"  She was already distracted by the instructions on the box.
"Since I didn't realize you and Derek were still..." I trailed off looking for the right word.
"As explosive as the Fourth of July?" she butt in with a waggle of her brows.
I sighed.  "Yes," I said dryly.  "As explosive as the Fourth of July.  Um," I continued, "But Pen, I don't know how much you share with him, but can you keep what Em and I are doing under wraps.  I don't know how much she'd like her team knowing that I'm her fake girlfriend..." I bit my lip out of nerves.  What if Penelope had already told Derek what we had?
"Don't you worry, sugar plum.  Your secret is safe with me."  She winked at me as she mimed zipping her lips, locking it, and throwing away the key.  I breathed a huge sigh of relief.  I did not want to complicate Em's life.
Penelope and I got lost in one of our favorite songs, screaming the lyrics into batter-covered spoons as if we were our own band.  She bumped her hip into mine and shimmied away, twirling around, whipping her long blonde hair about.  I laughed gleefully, always so happy to be around Penelope.  Her joy was infectious.  I turned around to the stove to pour the batter into the baking sheet, my hips shaking to the beat.
"What's this?"  I barely heard over the music.  Did my ears deceive me?  I whipped around to find Emily standing, go bag in hand and gun on hip, with a large smile on her face.
I didn't know what came over me – it could have been the air of frivolity Penelope and I had created, the fact that I hadn't seen Emily in days, or a combination of the two, but I darted around the island and launched myself into her arms.  She dropped her bag just in time to catch me as I wrapped my arms and legs around her like a koala.  "Oof," I grunted.  "Your gun hurts," I explained as I untangled myself and slid down.  She chuckled as she leaned down to kiss me, my huge smile making it difficult.
"Hi baby," she said softly.  Her eyes were unbearably soft looking at me, but our ticking timer was increasingly loud after Penelope and I's conversation.
"You're home."
She chuckled, "I am."
"I missed you." I couldn't stop how pathetic I was being.  I wasn't expecting to see her, and now that she was here, I couldn't contain it.
"Oh angel," she sighed, cupping my face.  "I missed you too."  Her eyes sparkled beneath her thick lashes, mesmerizing me as if it were the first time I was looking at her.  "What smells good?"
"Brownies."
"Ooooh did someone say brownies?" a man's voice interrupted my moment with Emily.  I startled in her arms.  I looked behind her, shocked that my tunnel vision had caused me to be so unobservant.  How could I have missed the fact that she came in with the entire BAU?
Emily chuckled again, smoothing her hand up and down my back to calm me down.  "Indi, I hope it's alright I brought work home with me.  I figured we could order in for dinner."
"We're starting with dessert tonight," Penelope said from across the room.  Everyone chuckled and moved in closer to the kitchen island.
"Everyone," I raised my voice over the booming music, "This is my best friend, Penelope."
"Penelope," Emily took over, "This is Aaron Hotchner, Spencer Reid, David Rossi, Derek Mo-"
"Oh we've met already," Derek purred at her from across the room.  "How could I forget a woman like you, Ms. Garcia?"  And Penelope actually blushed!  In our time as friends, I had never seen Penelope so shy or infatuated with someone.  She was beyond schoolgirl crush, playing coy and blushing under his gaze.
"I should hope not my java joy in a tall, muscular cup."
"Jesus," I groaned, burying my face in Emily's chest.  I turned back around to face Pen again.  "Can you two be normal for one night?"  Emily laughed softly, pulling me closer into her.  I breathed deeply, relaxing at her familiar scent.
"No!" both Penelope and Derek answered in unison.
"Um," I wrapped myself closer to Emily, nervous to ask about JJ.
Emily caressed my face and tilted it up to force eye contact.  "What is it, angel?"  Her tender voice cast a spell over me.  I'd do whatever she asked if she said it in that voice.
"Where's JJ?" I whispered.  I didn't want to rock the boat in front of Emily's coworkers.  I wasn't sure how much of the tension the rest of her team knew about.
Her soft eyes tightened at JJ's name.  "I told her she wasn't welcome in my home."  Her voice rang with finality; the conversation was over.  And that was fine by me.  There were several topics of conversation more pleasant than Emily's hateful ex-girlfriend.
"So where are these aforementioned brownies?" David interrupted the awkward moment.  And like clockwork, the timer dinged loudly.
A round of chuckles sounded in the room as Penelope skipped over to the oven to pull them out.   I walked over to my phone to turn the thunderous music down, Emily's eyes tracking me from across the room.  I wished I could attach myself to her like a barnacle to the hull of a ship.
"Em, call the pizza place?"
When our eyes met, she smiled brightly as if she couldn't stop herself.  I beamed in return, happy to be able to see her in person again.  FaceTime calls never did her smile justice.  "Already did, Indi.  It should be here in a bit."
"So, India!" David interrupted.  He guided me by the shoulders to have a seat in the living room.  "Finally our night to get to know you."
I chuckled nervously as the rest of the team piled into the living room.  Emily sat next to me, and I slid under her arm, grateful for her silent support.
"Yes, sweet cheeks," Derek said, "Tell us all of Prentiss's darkest secrets."
"Be very careful what you say next," Emily jokingly warned lowly.  My stomach flipped, though.  That tone was very similar to the one she used when I was actually in trouble in the bedroom.
Brushing aside my hormones, I said conspiratorially, "Okay."  Everyone's ears perked up, not expecting me to actually divulge information about Emily.  "Emily is hopeless in the kitchen."
Everyone, save for Hotch who smiled softly, burst out into laughter.  Emily nudged me in the shoulder and shouted, "Hey!"
"THAT," David interrupted, "Is no secret."
"Remember that time at your house when-" Derek started.
"NO!" Emily shouted to stop him before I could hear the rest.  "I know exactly what story you're about to tell, and Indi, baby," she said turning to me, "everything he's about to say is a lie."
"Oh I doubt that very much," I chuckled.  "Please go on," I encouraged.
"Unbelievable," Emily muttered to herself.  "Attacked in my own home."
"Shh!" I shushed her gently, putting my hand softly over her mouth, my eyes sparkling in amusement.  I was happy to see that loving spark reflected in hers, as well.
"Emily set my house on fire," David blurted casually, as if the information was not shocking.  Hotch and Reid chuckled at the memory.  I couldn't wait to hear this story.
"What!" I exclaimed in shock.  A few weeks ago I had joked about Emily burning down her house when I left her on her own to cook dinner.  I wasn't aware the concern was more warranted than I had originally thought, though this new knowledge did not surprise me one bit.  Emily really was a disaster in the kitchen.
"I did not!" Emily protested.
"So David had invited us all over for pasta," Derek explained.  "And Emily was the first to try to make her pasta.  But when she poured the vodka in for the sauce, the pan went up in flames!"  His arms exploded up into the air for dramatic flare.
"He's exaggerating," Emily said.  I could practically hear her eyes rolling.  "Nothing burned down."
"Oh so you didn't catch my favorite oven mitts imported from Italy on fire?"  I chuckled.  Emily pinched my shoulder and I stifled my laughter.
The doorbell sounded throughout the house.  "Saved by the bell!" Emily rejoiced and stood up to get the pizza.
Once we had all sat down at the table, water and wine served for everyone, conversation slowed as we all dug in.  After several slices David piped up, "You know, this is not authentic.  Not as good as mine."
"I see that stopped you from eating three slices," Spencer jabbed.
The members of the BAU looked around in shock, as if it were rare for Spencer to tease like that.  And then Derek said, "Oohhh pretty boy with the jabs."
"I liked it better when the jokes were focused on Emily," David pouted.
I reached over and squeezed her thigh under the table.  I couldn't bear to remove my hand.  This casual touch was all I could have for now.  I knew my getting to know the team was important to Emily, but I hadn't seen her in days.  All I wanted was to be alone with her.
I tuned them all out as Spencer and Derek teamed up on David.  I looked over at Emily and got lost in my thoughts as I studied her profile.  The slope of her jawline was so sexy.  The way her mouth turned up in an amused grin was breathtaking.  Emily turned slowly and caught me red-handed.  Her eyes crinkled in the corners, affection shining back at me as if it were perfectly normal to be caught staring at her.
______________________________
Once dinner had wrapped up and wine glasses had emptied, Emily broke up the laughter, "Okay, okay!  I love you all dearly, and I know it's a long drive, but I'm kicking everyone out."
"Gonna get yo groove thang on, eh Prentiss?"  Morgan waggled his eyebrows, his boyish smile full of mischief.  My eyes widened and my heart pounded at the implication.
Emily simply chuckled and responded, "Sure, Derek."  My head snapped up towards her in disbelief.  I was incredibly private about my sex life; it was horribly awkward for the team to know about it.  "If my groove thang includes curling up in bed."  I visibly relaxed, and she winked at me, causing my heart to take off in a sprint again.
"Well, Miss Garcia, can I escort you home?"  I internally rolled my eyes at his "chivalry."
Penelope made her way to his awaiting side and said, "Lead the way."  She called over her shoulder, "We'll reschedule girls' night, Indi!"  I nodded at her, anxious to be alone with Emily.
Once the last member of the BAU had left the house, Emily pulled me back in her arms and breathed deeply.  "I really did miss you angel."
I sighed and melted into her arms, happy to be alone at last.  "I missed you too."  There was nothing better than being wrapped in Emily's arms.  I felt her press her lips to the top of my head, and I squeezed her tighter.
"Let's get ready for bed.  I have days of snuggles to make up for."  I grinned as we made our way upstairs.
After our nightly routines, we both collapsed into bed, pulling the covers around us.  Emily pulled me into her arms and sighed contentedly.  She trailed her fingers up and down my arm as I snuggled against her chest.  I snaked my leg in between hers and started drawing my own patterns into her skin.  I closed my eyes and drank in the moment.  It didn't get more perfect than this.
"Em?" I asked softly.  I had no idea how to ask about Penelope's job, so I thought I'd just go for it.
"Yes angel?"  She nuzzled against the top of my head, inhaling the scent of my hair.
"I was wondering if you could help Penelope."
"How?"  Her voice raised in pitch showing growing concern.  "Is she in some type of trouble?  Did Morgan do something??"
"No no," I appeased her.  "Nothing like that."  I smoothed my hands up and down her arm to calm her back down.  I loved that she cared for Penelope too; it spoke volumes to her character.  "Her boss is a jerk, and her coworkers aren't much better.  She wants to quit, but she doesn't want to until she has another lead."
"Ah!" she exclaimed in understanding.
"So I thought, since you're so well-connected in DC, that you might know of somewhere hiring in her area of expertise."
"And what area of expertise is that, exactly?"
Shit.  "Er, well, I'm not exactly sure.  She always tries to tell me, but I just do not understand what she does.  Something about computer analyzing."
Emily chuckled softly and kissed me on the forehead.  "We're actually looking for a technical analyst for the BAU.  I'll call her tomorrow to see if she's qualified and interested."
"Oh thank you, Emily!  Thank you thank you!"  I turned my head and kissed her chest and squeezed her tightly.  "I owe you one."
"You owe me nothing, silly girl.  This is how it works.  It's all about who you know."
"Even still," I snuggled deeper into her arms, needing to be closer, "I appreciate you doing that for her.  It means a lot to me."
"There isn't anything I wouldn't do for you."  I stopped breathing.  There was nothing I could say to that that wasn't either overly corny or those three words that were too early to say.
We laid in blissful quiet for several moments, her fingers continuing to softly trail over my skin.  I loved her first nights back from cases because she was always so affectionate.  After a few moments, Emily broke our peace, "I love how much you get along with the team."
"Of course!  They love you, so by extension, I love them."
"It's more than that.  You just fit."  She paused, taking a deep breath.  More softly, "You just fit so well in my life."  Butterflies hummed pleasantly in my tummy.  I sat up a bit to kiss her deeply.  As I lost myself in her kiss, all I could think was that I, too, thought we fit together like long lost puzzle pieces.

OSRR: 3306
i got a lotta things to do tomorrow.
but i booked an appointment with an advisor to help me pick insurance! that'll be next week.
work was wild today. we didn't send out any notices today while i was there, but we saw on the news when prigozhin went down and india's lunar landing. and biden saying that "not much happens in russia that putin's not behind" which is a hell of a way to accuse a world leader of murder, even though shooting down aircraft is less of his style than poisoning is. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
i love my job.
also when i got in someone said "GSOCtopus" and jack drew a bad one on the board and challenged someone to do it better. so i did. below are the drawings done.
Tumblr media
jack's is on the right. on the left, the artists from bottom to top are supervisor adam, coworker meredith, coworker adam, and me. the sign is our company's logo.
when i handed jack my octopus, he went, "what the hell, this is so good" and i was just kinda smug lmao. i encouraged everyone to draw their own. so we have a pod of GSOCtopi and i hope they're there tomorrow.
i love my job so much.
anyway, i stopped at the grocery store on the way home because i needed to get more yogurt and i wanted chocolate, and i walked out twenty minutes and a hundred dollars later with that and a little more. came back to the house to hot dogs and game which was BRUTAL. like one of our players' characters threw a grenade and ended up dying from it under MY character's hands. and he was my buddy, too, so that fucked callum up. my character's name is callum cross and she's a badass and gender-fluid in my head. he's a fun character to play because while everyone else is like "callum is a girl" i'm like "sure he's a girl, he's a girl alright" which is kind of the opposite of how i feel about me? like, im just some guy. im just a random ass man living here, yknow? im just a dude. so cal and i are two sides of the same coin. both intelligence-based highly-educated smart and confident people, but cal is military and im civilian and he's got a C in empathy and i would have a B at least. (the grade determines the type of die you roll for checks involving that skill - an A is a d12, B is a d10, C is a d8, D is a d6, and if you don't have a grade you don't get an extra die for that skill. you need a letter grade in the attribute, which is a category, but the skills under them don't need one. you have to put extra into skills to build them up. it's a fascinating system.)
but yeah. so joel's dad is making a new character which may turn out to be another connection for callum, which im excited for. he's gonna have another friend to help bring her back from the end of her rope after losing his best friend. im excited for that.
anyway, i was happy enough to sit next to joel. he's off doing something downstairs, but he's going to put my new battery in my laptop tomorrow, so that'll stay here. lots to do tomorrow, though.

Day 17
Happy Birthday Gauravi! We kicked off today with breakfast from the buffet at our hotel. It has delicious food spanning from Indian cuisine to Western cuisine. Then, we went to the headquarters of CureFit, a health and fitness company.
First we got an office tour from Rishi. It was interesting to learn that there are no role titles at CureFit, and there are no assigned desks. Each floor is stocked with fitness equipment that we got to try out. They had treadmills, monkey bars, ellipticals, a basketball court, and even a massage chair.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then, we listened to a presentation from Shalabh, a strategy leader at CureFit. He gave us an overview on CureFit, and told us that they are a new age company attempting to make health easy in India. After that, Mujtabha, who works in the fitness group, spoke to us about the fitness business within CureFit, CultFit. He told us that CultFit exists in 90 cities across India. Then Shahbaaz, a brand manager, presented to us and told us about an exciting upcoming collaboration with Marvel. Next, we had lunch on the open-air top floor. We ate the delicious and nutritious Indian food that CureFit caters for its workers every day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After lunch, we listened to Phalguni present on the brand and marketing side of CureFit. She taught us that CureFit has the mission of making fitness fun, easy, and accessible. Then Rishi presented to us and showed us CureFit advertisements. Lastly, Mujtabha told us about the history of the company, and his journey working at CureFit. It was a pleasure getting to learn from so many inspiring members of the CureFit team. Then, we celebrated Gauravi’s birthday with a chocolate cake. Pictured is Sagar feeding the cake to her after we sang. Finally, we visited SugarFit, a health-tech company owned by CureFit that aims to manage and reverse diabetes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To end our visit, we did a CultFit Zumba class. It was easily one of the highlights of my time in India. It was a great break from our learning and work! We came back to the hotel and all did our own thing for dinner because we are prioritizing our case studies due this week. Excited to visit the Incubation Cell tomorrow!

Punch Out AU: Archie Comics AU
I love the Archie Comics and here's an AU based on it. What if Punch Out characters were living together in the little town known as Riverdale?
Tumblr media
Little Mac: After moving to Riverdale with his adoptive family, Macintosh Sanders or Mac for short, made new friends with Archie and the Gang, he's also friends with others who also move to Riverdale as well, including Mika, Birdie and so many others. Mac is both smart and athletic, even though people would often made fun of his short structure but he has a good heart and a great heart.
Star Mika: Mac's childhood friend from middle school who just moved to Riverdale after her dad got a new job as police commissioner. Mikaela Florence Tiongson is very sweet, kind and always lend a helping hand, a straight A student and student council president. She's a multipotentialite, meaning that she on many different interests and hobbies and she's also an otaku by heart who has a love for cosplaying. Mika also has a crush on Joe, the French teacher but she somehow got into a love triangle with Aran and Don, making her somewhat the alternate opposite to Archie. And if anyone can rival Betty's baking, then Mika is that person.
Doc Louis: Louis James Sanders, better known as heavy weight boxer Doc Louis, is Mac's adoptive father and is good friends with Coach Clayton. He owns a small gym in Riverdale and has a love for chocolate.
Glass Joe: Joseph Le Verre or Joe for short, is a French teacher in Riverdale High who teaches, well French of course. He's often called 'Glass Joe' due to getting his jaw broken every time he tries to do sports, Joe also knows that Mika has a crush on him so he started developing feelings towards her even though their ages are different.
Von Kaiser: Viktor Von Kaiser is a strict boxing instructor who works in Doc's gym and he teaches boxing to young children. Even though he's strict, he's a bit of a scaredy cat and often say 'Mami (Mommy)' whenever he's scared or often gets startled.
Disco Kid: Dean Martin Sanders is Mac's adoptive brother who is a year older than him although he goes to the same school as he's brother. Dean is a lover for disco dancing and has a bit of an 80's aesthetic which he often has given the nickname of 'Disco Kid' due to his talent for dancing. He's also Chuck's wingman when it comes to finding ideas for Chuck's dates with Nancy.
King Hippo: Maui Māhoe is a mute Hawaiian who comes from the mysterious place known as Hippo Island and is the heir to the throne but he decided to have a normal life with his adoptive Hawaiian family in Riverdale. He was given the nickname 'King Hippo', due to him grunting and eating a lot, sort of Jughead's opposite counterpart. Piston Hondo: From Tokyo, Japan, Takeo Hondo is the son of the CEO of a car company and if anyone can rival Betty's knowledge of auto mechanics, then it's Hondo who's the one. He was given the nickname 'Piston Hondo', due to his skills in auto mechanics and he's also the guy who will fix any car of his friends.
Bear Hugger: A great jolly man who's similar to Santa Claus, Bryan Harris is a Canadian man who works at Riverdale's Lumber Mill. He's a nature lover, a down to earth person and has a pet bear and squirrel named Mr. Bear and Chipper, that's why people would often call him 'Bear Hugger'. He loves the maple bacon burgers at Pop Tate's and often tell stories about the days in the forest to the 'youths' as he would describe teenagers.
