BRIA SKONBERG, JAZZ ST LOUIS, 4 MARCH 2023
Comes now the fourth jazz singer of the season. I’d planned for two (Veronica Swift and Cecile McLorin Salvant), signed on late for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Songs We Love show, and thought of BRIA SKONBERG as a trumpeter. She is that but also a fine singer who finishes up one and takes the next chorus on the other.
Her background is in trad jazz—she did Cornet Chop Suey, Mood Indigo, and St Louis Blues—and that probably contributes to singing that swings but isn’t too affected with the swoops and pauses that beatniks brought in. She has surprising power as a vocalist and is a remarkable blues singer actually. Some of her work, particularly on standards, seems shy, particularly compared to the trumpet solos that bookend it.
They opened with From This Moment On which I knew and very much liked from one of her recordings. I settled in thinking I knew what to expect. Almost. She used a variety of mutes, not just the metallic donut, but plungers and others, which added variety. She also did Harry Warren’s The More I See You which had a very nice muted trumpet solo with only bassist Adi Myerson and the Ellington and Handy among the standards
She contributed two original songs and two instrumentals, one a samba, the other very different and modern in approach. Yep, they can do that too.
The band was quite capable each with little moments, but nothing that prompted a double take. Chris Pattishall had an electric keyboard, but, as a gentleman, didn’t play it. He was supportive and fluid. Myerson’s bass was strong and she took her share of succinct solos and her bowed work on the So Is The Day closer was like a tuba. Darien Douglas was smart and crisp. They could and did explore the more modern Villian Vanguard. More trad/swing based stuff is not without challenges and requires craft, but it didn’t seem to push them.
Skonberg though is winning in her triple capacity of leader, vocalist, and instrumentalist. She charmed us, but she also delivered a solid show.

Pattishall and Sotashe Deliver a Jazz Concert Gem
Pattishall and Sotashe Deliver a Jazz Concert Gem
Review: Pattishall and Sotashe By Perry Tannenbaum
Tumblr media
Enigmatic and eclectic, Chris Pattishall is largely absent from Amazon, Spotify, or Apple Music, the places where I usually search out the latest in jazz and classical – and he’s not always captured to best advantage on YouTube, where his presence is far more substantial. The keyboard artist (he plays accordion as well as piano) has firm ties to…

Rafiq Bhatia - In A Sentimental Mood
Rafiq Bhatia - In A Sentimental Mood @rafiqbhatia
Tumblr media
When you think of Duke Ellington‘s ‘In a Sentimental Mood’ you think of a bygone era, of summer garden parties with men whisking women off their feet for a twirl – but listening to Rafiq Bhatia‘s rendition is nothing of the sort.
In fact if it wasn’t for the title, you’d have no clue that this was in fact Duke’s song – it’s that unrecognisable!
Like working with molten glass, Rafiq…

Cannonball Adderley was a mere 46 when he died, of a brain hemorrhage, in 1975. An alto saxophonist of robust intellect and irrefutable soul, he left a monumental legacy during his two decades in the spotlight — as a member of the Miles Davis Sextet, an exemplar of 1960s soul jazz and the leading avatar of a brand of post-bop modernism with popular appeal.
This episode of Jazz Night in America takes a fond look at that legacy, illuminating it from multiple angles. Guided by our host, self-avowed Cannonball fanatic Christian McBride, we'll hear from some of Adderley's former bandmates, like drummer Roy McCurdy and tenor saxophonist Ernie Watts. We'll spend quality time with Patrick Bartley Jr., a young alto saxophonist who has taken Cannonball Adderley's music and message to heart. And we'll pull the curtain back on The Black Messiah, a 1971 album that has come to be seen as a classic.
"The Mighty Cannonball Adderley" band
Patrick Bartley: alto saxophone; Julian Lee: tenor saxophone; Bruce Harris: trumpet; Chris Pattishall: piano; Alexander Claffy: bass; Evan Sherman, drums
"The Chocolate Nuisance" from The Black Messiah
Julian "Cannonball" Adderley: alto saxophone; Nat Adderley: cornet; George Duke: electric piano; Mike Deasy: guitar; Walter Booker: bass; Roy McCurdy: drums; Airto Moreira, Buck Clarke: percussion

Sharing a statement about their work on the project, Sox Lux said: “Even though we knew from the moment Daniels asked us to score this film that it would push us in new and unexpected directions, we couldn’t have predicted how much we’d learn from the project.
“What emerged was our most ambitious undertaking to date, over two years in the making, resulting in two hours of new music. It was an opportunity for us to play, to infuse humour into our work, and to experiment from and beyond our various musical backgrounds.”

Samora Pinderhughes X Stretch Music
GRIEF by Samora Pinderhughes
Composer, filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist Samora Pinderhughes’ highly anticipated new album GRIEF is slated for release on April 15 via Stretch Music. It is an integral element of Pinderhughes’ years-long multimedia effort on loss, structural violence and possibilities for healing and liberation, The Healing Project, which consists of three parts: a physical exhibition, a digital archive and finally an album. Watch/share the film for the first single “Masculinity” here.
GRIEF is the most personal part of The Healing Project for Pinderhughes, who wrote all the songs and makes his official debut as a singer on the album. Written in the spirit of music from the ’60’s and ’70s by artists like Nina Simone and Curtis Mayfield who made powerful statements about life and social justice through their music, GRIEF aims to evoke feeling through texture and harmony by underlining the human voice as a bonding agent.
The album features an ensemble—Marcus Gilmore (drums), Brad Allen Williams (guitar), Boom Bishop (electric bass), Clovis Nicolas (upright bass), Immanuel Wilkins (alto sax), Lucas Pino (tenor sax), Elena Pinderhughes (flute), Argus Quartet (strings), Nio Levon (vocals), Jehbreal Jackson (vocals) and Pinderhughes himself on piano, production and vocals—and a rhythm section with the rare combination of two bassists playing at the same time.
Additionally, The Healing Project’s physical exhibition will show at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center from March 25 to June 19. Produced by Anna Deavere Smith, Glenn Ligon and Vijay Iyer the exhibition marks Pinderhughes’ visual art debut and features music from GRIEF as well as a constellation of films, sound works, physical pieces and contributed artworks from established artists like Titus Kaphar and currently incarcerated artists including Pitt Panther. The heart of the exhibition is the Sound Room, where the interviews that Pinderhughes conducted over several years across 15 states for The Healing Project are scored to additional original music. The exhibition will also include workshops and events, all free and open to the public, and free performances featuring Pinderhughes and special guests throughout the run.
The digital archive of the installation, which will debut in March, is an open-source, mobile-friendly site built on AR/VR technology where people can listen directly to the recordings of The Healing Project interviewees scored to music. Pinderhughes created the digital archive alongside collaborators including Rafiq Bhatia, Chris Pattishall, Jack DeBoe and Adam O’Farrill, which features a brand-new visual world created by CRUX that site visitors can digitally walk through.
Tumblr media
The Healing Project documents experiences of incarceration, detention and structural violence around the United States, while highlighting strategies of community care that imagine and nourish another world. By highlighting the specific stories of people such as Keith LaMar, Pitt Panther, Cyril Walrond and others who have urgent cases in regards to their imprisonment, The Healing Project aims to shine light on these situations and ultimately help free them. Pinderhughes’attempt to communicate an abolitionist vision, the project took place over 10 years and is based on years of deep conversations with more than 100 people across 15 states about their experiences, stories and ideas.
Samora Pinderhughes is a composer, pianist, vocalist, filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist known for examining sociopolitical issues and fighting for change through his art. Born and raised in the Bay Area, Pinderhughes began playing music at the age of two years and went on to study music at Juilliard, where he met his primary artistic mentor, MacArthur-winning playwright Anna Deavere Smith. Pinderhughes has collaborated and performed with a number of artists including Common, Robert Glasper, Karriem Riggins, Sara Bareilles and Herbie Hancock, and his compositional works have been commissioned by institutions including Carnegie Hall, the Sundance Film Festival and the Kennedy Center.
