The Parish Church of Cachopo, also known as Church of Saint Stephen.
Technically, speaking, this church was built circa 1535. But, looking at it, you won't find any XVI Century architectural elements, since this temple was completely rebuilt circa 1950.
Can we still say this is the same church that was originally built by the people of Cachopo in 1535? Or is this just a mid-XX Century building that carries the historical memory of an old church from the XVI Century that existed in this very place?
This example is a good startng point from some reflexions about the historical heritage that I pretend to incorporate in my PhD thesis: aren 't all hostorical buldings just a memory of something that, actually, existed in that very place?

Saint Stephen succeeded his father, Prince Bogdan II, as Prince of Moldavia on April 12, 1457 soon after the latter was murdered. He defended his country against the Turks, and he also built many churches and monasteries. (Painted Churches of Bukovina)
Saint Stephen the Great was a spiritual son of Saint Daniel the Hesychast (December 18), who told him that if he built a church after every battle he would be victorious in all his wars. Following Saint Daniel’s counsel, Saint Stephen won forty-seven battles and built forty-eight churches or monasteries. He also built the Putna Dormition Monastery in northern Moldavia in 1466 when Saint Daniel urged him to do so.
In 1476, Saint Stephen lost the battle of Razboieni to the Turks. He went to visit Saint Daniel at the Voronets Monastery to ask whether or not he should surrender the country to the Moslems. Saint Daniel told him not to surrender, because he would soon win a decisive victory. Saint Daniel also told him that after he had saved the nation, Stephen should build a monastery in honor of Saint George at that place. Having faith in Saint Daniel’s prophecy, Stephen went forth with his army and drove the Turks from the country.
Saint Stephen fell asleep in the Lord on July 2, 1504, and was buried at the Putna Monastery. He was glorified by the Orthodox Church of Romania in 1992.

Well my sleep schedule is fucked(nearly an hour past Bedtime and I'm vibrating) but don't cry. 21 pages of Stephen Maturin trying to convince himself he's not in love with his captain, alright?

By Jean-Pierre Isbouts
1 December 2022
After Jesus' death in A.D. 33, his early followers began slowly spreading out from Jerusalem to find sanctuary in places such as Cyrus, Phoenicia, Damascus, and Antioch.
The authors of the New Testament, like St. Luke the Evangelist who is believed to have penned the book Acts of the Apostles around A.D. 80, tell the struggles believers and the early church faced in their nascent days.
In Acts, Luke tells the story of St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr to be gruesomely executed in A.D. 36.
Stephen's stoning, Luke says, prompted other followers to flee so as not to fall victim to similar persecutions.
So, what does the Bible say about how this vulnerable faith got jumpstarted, eventually evolving into the world’s most populous religion with some 2.3 billion followers today?
Mystical conversion
Tumblr media
Acts of the Apostles tells the story of one man, Saul of Tarsus, who played a huge role in spreading early Christianity.
Devoutly Jewish and a Roman citizen, he was an unlikely proponent of this new faith.
It describes how he witnessed the mob scene around Stephen’s death and came to believe it was his solemn duty to persecute Christians, going so far as to drag Christian men and women to prison, punishing them to deny their faith.
He obtained permission from the high priest in Jerusalem to pursue and arrest fleeing Christians.
On his way to Damascus, Syria, however, a light from heaven flashed around him.
He fell to the ground and heard the voice of the resurrected Jesus saying, “Saul, why do you persecute me?” (Acts 9:4).
From that moment on, Saul (later called Paul) devoted himself to the Apostolic mission.
Spreading the message
Tumblr media
Among the places where early Christians fled for safety from persecution was Antioch, capital of Roman Syria.
The newly converted Paul found himself there and, with the apostle Barnabas, spent a year preaching the gospel and establishing the first Christian church.
It was there that the term “Christians” — "followers of Christ” — was coined (Acts 11:21).
It was also from Antioch that Paul embarked on three separate journeys, detailed in Acts, traveling over 10,000 miles between A.D. 46 and 57.
It tells of Paul’s visits to present-day Israel, Syria, Greece, and Turkey, walking roads that Romans built to facilitate control over the empire and enduring uncomfortable passages on weather-exposed decks of boats.
Along the way, he argued “persuasively about the kingdom of God” (Acts 19:8) and performed “extraordinary miracles” (Acts 19:11), such as curing the sick.
In Cyprus, he baptized a Roman consul, Paulus Sergius.
He shared Jesus’ gospel and established churches throughout the Roman Empire, communities of faith that featured confessions, liturgies, bishops, priests, and deacons.
Resistance, arrest, and martyrdom
Tumblr media
Everywhere he went, however, Paul also encountered Jewish followers, who called him a heretic.
He endured beatings, stoning, and arrests for preaching the gospel.
In Athens, Acts recounts how Paul became distressed over the preponderance of idols.
He tried to reason with the citizens:
“As I walked around and looked at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: To an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship” (Acts 17:23).
He debated that this “unknown god” was the biblical God, the creator of heaven and earth.
Some sneered, but others said they wanted to hear more from Paul (Acts 17:32). Just by talking to people, he successfully made converts, one by one.
Acts records that Paul was arrested several times by the Romans and imprisoned twice in Rome.
The first time, between A.D. 60 and 62, he was arrested for causing a riot in a Jewish temple in Jerusalem.
He was allowed to live in a house, where it’s said he converted his Roman guards.
The Romans arrested him again sometime between A.D. 62 and 67.
This time, he was confined to Tullianum, a maximum security prison. Soon after, Paul is said to have been martyred.
His end is unclear, but the most common account claims he was beheaded at the order of the Roman emperor Nero, who blamed him as a Christian leader for Rome’s burning.
Paul’s unique ways
Tumblr media
Many other apostles and missionaries evangelized Christianity at the same time as Paul.
While biblical accounts show that Paul didn't claim to be anything more than an ambassador for Christ, he did have a unique strategy.
He worked to baptize souls regardless of whether they were Jewish or Gentile.
One big question centered on whether converts to Christ should also be expected to become Jewish.
For the Jerusalem apostles, the answer was yes. For them, faith was inseparable from Jesus’ teachings as a Jewish rabbi. Paul disagreed.
He welcomed Gentiles who were attracted to Christianity but were not interested in adopting Jewish customs.
Paul was intelligent and controversial, pouring his experiences and thoughts into letters throughout his travels.
Some say he wrote so many letters because so many people argued with him.
Whatever the case, the letters summarize his views on Christianity, ideas that became the bedrock of the Catholic Church.
Tumblr media
In his Letter to the Romans, for example, he said that faith in Christ supersedes Jewish Law; that each community is part of the “body of Christ” and should be governed by love; and that faith in the Christian God holds the promise of eternal life.
In all, he authored 13 epistles (seven of which are undisputedly his, six of which are disputed), making him the most prolific writer in the Bible.
Fourteen of the 27 books in the New Testament are attributed to him (though scholars also differ on this number).
Through it all, Paul articulated Jesus’ “kingdom of God” message into an idea that the largely Gentile population could understand and accept and his ability to spread the message of primitive Christianity is truly extraordinary.
His three journeys described in Acts permanently established the fledgling faith in Gentile lands and beyond.
Without him, the Greco-Roman world might never have heard about the teachings of a charismatic rabbi from Nazareth whose redemptive program went on to embrace the world.

Welcome to a rural village in the interior of the Algarve called Santo Estevão (Saint Stephen, in English).
This beauty is the Parish Church of Saint Stephen (Santo Estevão, in Portuguese), a temple built in two phases during in the first half of the XVIII Century: between 1707 and 1715 and between 1738 and 1744. The facade was restored circa 1846, and the main portal was replaced in 1903.
As I mentioned, this Catholic temple, as we know it today, is (mostly) a work from the XVIII Century. However, the parish church took the place of an old hermitage (also dedicated to Saint Stephen), that was probably built during the XVI Century.

i genuinely can't stop thinking about yunho as a fallen angel... like...
yunho’s catholic confirmation name is stefano, which is i believe a reference to saint stephen. saint stephen is the patron saint of several different things, but the one that caught my eye was the patron saint of coffin makers. ive had that knowledge churning around in my brain for a long time, especially after watching the kdrama doom at your service, but after seeing these pictures my mind is absolutely spinning with fallen angel soulmate yunho brain rot……… so come along with me
fallen angel yunho. he's been wandering the earth for years, passing through life and people and history and he's never known the reason that he was cast out until he meets her, you. he hears you first, a distant voice in the back of his mind, a prayer to his saintly name, a name he hasn't heard in what feels like a millennia. a whisper to saint stephen, the man he used to be, many years and many bodies ago.
no one prays to him anymore, not really. certainly not a voice like yours, ringing clearly and angrily in his ear, a bitter request for a coffin to be ready in early spring. he thinks about the way it's almost winter now, the air turning crisp, and he wonders what in your life has you so angry and yet so practical about death.
he thinks of you for days, weeks, idlily waiting to hear the voice again. he dreams of it, sometimes wakes from a stone sleep to your bitter tenor, the clear catch of tears in your throat, but it's always a memory. he finds himself wandering the city for you, searching through churches, reverent houses of worship that you might be hiding away in. he doesn't expect to find your voice ringing out clear as day across the crowded room of a museum, full of life and joy and the picture of health.
he finds a way to speak to you, he's practiced in the art of conversation, of seduction even when the end goal isn't sex. he just wants to know you, to hear your pretty prayer in person, to understand your voice just a little and why in the world you were praying to him and not god himself like everyone else. in the midst of many, he makes a space for you both alone, the connection and the pull immediate and essential.
for a while, you make him smile, laugh, relax, he feels more at ease and more like a person than he ever would have expected. he doesn't understand you or your prayer though, not until you cough painfully, fitfully into your sleeve and he sees the bright kiss of blood at the corner of your lips. he never imagined you sick, but he supposes it makes sense. in all the versions of meeting you he imagined, this outcome wasn’t one he ever entertained.
he's never watched someone he's loved die before, at least not since his first life, and shamefully he barely remembers the names of his family from then. but somehow he knows he'll remember yours, the way he aches is altogether new and even though he knows it would be better to watch over you from afar, he just can't. and it doesn't help that you keeps finding your way to him around every corner of the city, coincidence after coincidence. so easy to joke about how it must be fate when it is in fact fate, pulling you tightly together and tying the knot tight.
he allows himself to love you then, and you allow yourself one last, good thing. he never lies about who and what he is, and you never really believe him, for all you know he's just a figment of your imagination. a hallucination from one of your tumors like the doctor warned you about. you think if cancer can give you one gift before dying, at least it's him.
for a little while yunho thinks his purpose in falling from grace was to love you, after all you prayed to him, no matter how bitterly. but he understands the truth the moment he meets your daughter, the moment he realizes his purpose for you is much more than momentary, final happiness.
and so he carries you forward through those final months, easing your pain and your giving you one last chance at real, lasting love. and he helps ease you into the other side, his promises whispered tearfully into your hair, that he'll see you again but only after he stays by her side. your child's own guardian angel, happy to watch over her and guide her until it's her time to come home too.
and of course, that means he has to wait. you both do, but he's already waited, even when he didn't know what he was waiting for.

Saint Stephen church in Bordils, Comarques Gironines, Catalonia.
The church was built in the second half of the 16th century. As it says on top of the entrance door, the church was started to build on the 14th of September 1561 ("vvy que contam X4 del mes de setembre del any 1561 se comensá la esglesia parrochial"). It's built in Gothic style with influences from the Renaissance.

Saint Stephen the Martyr
Died:  34
Feast day: December 26
Patronage: Altar Servers, casket makers, deacons, headaches, horses, masons, Italy
Stephen, traditionally regarded as the Protomartyr, was according to the Acts of the Apostles a deacon in the early church at Jerusalem who aroused the enmity of members of various synagogues by his teachings. Accused of blasphemy, at his trial he made a long speech fiercely denouncing the Jewish authorities who were sitting in judgment on him and was then stoned to death.
