Unapologetically Muslim

My legs were trembling, my voice cracked as I uttered “Allahu Akbar.” It was my first time traveling while wearing the headscarf, I was only 12 at the time. I had managed to build up the courage to pray in one of the busiest and most crowded Airports in the US, Chicago O’Hare. I laid my travel sized rug in a small hallway hidden between a McDonald’s and elevators where I could discreetly and quickly pray one of my 5 daily prayers. I recited the shortest chapter, and shortened my prayer, in fear that someone would notice me praying. I thought of that moment every time I prayed in public. If I could pray in an airport, I could pray anywhere. I began to feel empowered by praying in public. I stopped caring who saw me pray, or thinking if the place I was praying was appropriate enough. But maybe I got too comfortable. Today, those fears reemerged. Memories of rejection, alienation, and ostracization. There are millions of people in America saying they don’t want someone like me in their country. They say I don’t belong, I am not their image of the United States. I will never belong here, no matter how much I try. What’s new? We now have a president backing these people up. We are seeing a misuse of power to support twisted, bigoted, interests, and not the constitution.  We are so privileged to live in one of the most diverse and accepting areas of the United States. But even here we face discrimination and hatred. We live in our own bubbles and forget what it’s like in the remainder of the country. We surround ourselves with likeminded people, so we’ve fooled ourselves into thinking we’ve reached acceptance, and we no longer live in the post 9-11 world. Yet, I remain hopeful. My presence here has affected people. It is important now more than ever to be unapologetically Muslim. I might be someone’s first and only exposure to a Muslim. When I greet the children I work with, it melts my heart seeing the genuine smiles on their faces. I know they don’t have an ounce of hatred towards me. They are my hope for the future. These next 4 years will not be easy or pleasant, But I believe that it will bring us all closer together, as we unite in the name of civil freedoms and justices.
