You thought getting into the computer science major would be the hardest part.
Beating out a 71% application rate had to mean something.
Surviving weed-out courses, crafting a personal statement that didn’t make you sound like every other overachiever who taught their grandparent how to restart a computer— that was supposed to be your final boss.
Wrong.
Apparently, the game’s just beginning.
Because it’s Week 1 and there’s already a test. Not even a quiz, a full-blown exam worth 15% of your grade.
Not a quiz. A test. The syllabus had said something vague about "assessment checkpoints," but you hadn't realized they'd be checking if you were built for this within the first five days of class.
The professor just breezes through the rest of the syllabus like it’s Terms and Conditions, casually mentioning that attendance points will also be cumulative and mandatory.
Like it was a fun little bonus. Like it wasn’t about to completely derail your mental health.
You are, in every definition of the word, cooked.
Especially since you, in your infinite optimism, decided to skip linear algebra and now he’s name-dropping matrix multiplication like you’re all old friends.
Which, sure, is a prereq— but you thought you could squeeze it in next quarter. Because you thought, “How bad could it be?”
So now you're here, sitting in the second row with your laptop open, staring blankly at the slides you’ve written meticulous notes about, trying to decode phrases like "eigenvector interpretation" while suppressing the urge to scream.
Long story short: you’re fucked.
But you can’t drop. Not when you clawed your way in. Not when you’ve already fantasized about the stupid little LinkedIn post you'll write when you graduate.
You wanted this. This major, this future— you chose it. So now you get to suffer for it.
So instead of clicking “Unenroll,” you find yourself at the campus convenience store at 12:03AM, hoping a Celsius will give you the will to survive reviewing the sheer number of questions you got wrong on that first quiz.
You don’t expect anyone else to be there this late, except maybe the sad grad students.
But while you’re squinting at the flavors, someone rounds the corner of the aisle. There’s the low rumble of skateboard wheels and the crinkle of plastic as he picks up a Red Bull. He’s tall, broad-shouldered, wearing a worn black hoodie and plaid pajama pants like it’s a uniform. And he's—
He’s cute.
Boyish, really. His hair’s a little messy, his under-eye bags dramatic and kind of adorable, and you can’t help but admire how youthful he looks for someone also up past midnight.
You’re not in the mood to crush, not when you’re running on 3 hours of sleep and academic shame, but… God. His eye bags are really cute.
You try not to stare.
You also try not to fall asleep standing up, but your body is fighting you on all fronts. When you move toward the counter to check out, your foot catches on the edge of the aisle carpet.
You stumble forward.
And suddenly, someone’s hand is on your elbow— steady, warm. Holding you up.
You meet his gaze, honey brown eyes, amused and warm.
"Be careful, yeah?"
You mumble a thanks and practically flee to the self-checkout, embarrassed beyond belief. You don’t look back.
The next day, you drag yourself to your professor’s office hours. You’re so tired your vision blurs a little. You’d spent the whole night trying to understand where you went wrong— how you could have possibly missed that many questions on the quiz.
You’re five minutes early. The office is quiet except for the hum of a desk fan. There’s someone already there.
You freeze.
It’s him.
Red Bull guy. Skateboard guy. “Be careful” guy.
He’s sitting across from the professor, leaning over the desk with a notebook open and pen in hand, looking deeply focused. His hoodie’s different today, but just as lived-in.
How the hell did you not notice him in class?
You convince yourself he must be from a different section. You would’ve noticed someone like that, right? The bone structure? You definitely would’ve noticed.
You also assume he’s a TA or grader or something. He just looks so comfortable in here, like he knows what he’s doing. Probably here to help debug someone's recursion disaster.
Until—
“I just don’t get how I got the lowest score,” he mutters, rubbing the back of his neck. “Like, I thought I did alright, but when I checked Canvas it said 35 out of 100. That’s... beyond terrible.”
Your jaw drops.
Thirty-five?
You’re not even sure if that’s comforting or depressing, and nearly choke on your own breath.
You’re not sure if you want to laugh or cry.
On one hand: thank God you’re not the only one struggling. On the other: there’s someone who actually did worse than you
You take a hesitant seat next to him. His gaze flicks toward you.
It takes a second, but he recognizes you too. “Yo,” he says, like you didn’t almost faceplant in front of him nine hours ago.
You blink. “Hi.”
And just like that, you’re no longer alone in your academic downfall.
Because after office hours, just as you’re packing up your laptop with a sense of mild defeat, Ino clears his throat beside you.
“You wanna come study with my tutor?” he asks, eyes hopeful but tired. “Nanami. Took the class last year, has a file of all the assignments. And he interned for Riot Games over the summer, so he actually knows his shit.”
You blink, surprised. “You have a tutor?”
He shrugs, the corner of his mouth twitching in a sheepish grin. “I mean… tutor might be a strong word. More like a friend who’s already survived this mess and doesn’t mind explaining it to the rest of us.”
You hesitate for a moment, but honestly, you really need help, and the idea of learning from someone who’s already been through this feels like a lifeline.
“Okay,” you say, finally giving in. “I’ll come. Riot intern, huh? That’s pretty cool— you actually know someone like that?”
“Yeah, we used to skate together all the time when we were younger. Then we both ended up interning at Riot. He did backend dev, and I was doing data science for Valorant.”
He shrugs, flicking a loose strand of hair behind his ear. “Not that I play PC anymore— too busy trying not to fail this class, honestly.”
His grin turns sheepish but still has that effortless cool that makes you smile back without even trying.
You step out together into the crisp evening air. The campus is quiet, lights flickering on the pavement as students scurry past or lounge on benches, headphones on, notebooks out.
He doesn’t rush like you expect. Instead, Ino slows his pace to match your tired steps. You notice he’s watching you carefully, adjusting his stride so you don’t have to sprint just to keep up.
The gesture is small but feels... considerate. Like he’s already looking out for you, even though you barely know each other.
The walk to the undergrad library takes about ten minutes. Ino casually talks about how he’s been skating since middle school and how he prefers skating at night because the cool breeze helps him relax. When you mention you’ve never learned to skateboard, he laughs and teases that you’d probably be the type to rent a Lime scooter instead.
The library’s glass doors slide open smoothly. Inside, the quiet hum of fluorescent lights and the soft tapping of keyboards greet you. It’s comforting, familiar.
You both find a table tucked in a corner, away from the main clusters of students.
“Here’s the plan,” Ino says, pulling out his laptop. “We wait for Nanami to finish his lecture downstairs, and in the meantime, we try to finish as much of the homework as we can before he gets here to review it.”
You nod, setting up your laptop. You try to start on the first problem, the one about recursion, but your brain immediately threatens to shut down.
Ino leans over your screen, pointing at your code. “You named that variable ‘ballerinaCappuccina’? Dude, what?”
You laugh despite yourself. “More memorable than ‘x’ or ‘temp’, okay?”
He snickers, shaking his head. “You're so brainrot.”
Time slips by as you swap dumb jokes and lament the professor’s cryptic hints. You find yourself relaxing, your earlier dread melting into something softer.
Then the door opens again, and Nanami steps in.
He moves with an easy confidence, glasses sliding down his nose, hair a little tousled but neat. His tee sports a pixelated game logo you recognize, and he’s carrying a backpack that looks surprisingly clean for a CS major.
You glance up, surprised by how different he is from Ino.
If Ino’s energy was all skater-boy charm and casual cool, Nanami's would be hot, slightly nerdy, and intensely focused— like someone who clearly spent all night grinding out code but still somehow looks handsomely tired in the morning.
You catch your breath for a moment.
Cute, you think. Definitely cute.
Ino waves him over. “Yo, Nanami! This is my study buddy— also failing this class with me.”
Nanami gives a small smile as he slides into the seat next to Ino. “Ino, try not to embarrass yourself. It’s not that hopeless— yet.”
With a calm confidence, he starts breaking down the first week's concepts— functions, APIs, database calls— with a precision and clarity that almost makes you think you could pass this class if you had him as your professor.
You and Ino trade notes, nodding along, asking questions, laughing when Nanami mocks the actual professor’s habit of using vague buzzwords.
Between explanations, Nanami looks at you briefly and says, “You’re doing better than most first-timers. Keep at it.”
You feel a warmth spread through your chest.
Hours pass, the late-night study session stretching into the early morning. The three of you share snacks from Ino’s backpack— a sad assortment of Takis, a couple of peach ring gummies, and a can of Red Bull you suspect was bought last night at the convenience store.
You realize, with a little startle, that this is the first time you’ve felt truly at ease since the quarter began.
The three of you fall into a rhythm— Ino’s lighthearted jokes, Nanami's steady patience, and your stubborn determination.
The future still looks impossible.
But for now, with these two by your side, it feels a little less like you’re totally cooked.

An Education in Attraction, Chapter 13
Pairing: Reader x Gojo
Summary: It's spring when you start your Master's degree. As the flowers and leaves unfold, so too do your feeling for Gojo

Your mood remains neutral for the rest of the week leading up to classes, and you try to approach the second term with a cautious optimism. 
The first day of your second term is hot and bright, the sun blazes through the window of your dorm and beats down through the cloudless sky on campus. It’s still summer in Tokyo, and the sun has come back with a vengeance after your stormy break.
After spending breakfast enjoying your friends’ company at a cafe off campus, the three of you walk towards your new building across the grounds. As you wind down the brick paths, strong branches block the worst of the sun and a light breeze drifts through the buildings, cooling your face. 
Your first class of the day, Implementing Classroom Lessons, is in one of the newer buildings of the Education division- the warm brick walls and low entrances house the more intimate classrooms and lecture halls for the advanced teaching classes. As your trio searches for your classroom on the first floor, you recognise some of the other students in your program and are struck by just how much has changed since you began classes five months ago.
While you’d felt welcome on campus since the beginning, completing the first term and delivering speeches at the conferences has been a sort of crucible, binding your cohort of students together. Your group follows your peers to the correct room down the hall. 
Full bookshelves line two of the walls and the front is dominated by a long chalkboard, giving the room an intimate, cluttered feel. While you initially hadn’t been fond of the scratch of chalk or the mess it brings, chalkboards have remained popular in high schools in Japan and you’ve come to associate them with teaching. The final wall offers high windows that look out onto the campus and bring in natural light.
You settle beside Saito near the front of the room and prepare a fresh document for notes before turning to face your colleagues and chat.  
There’s a comfortable and warm energy in the classroom- it vibrates with the conversation of your peers catching up with each other and an overall enthusiasm to begin courses. The dusty smell of chalk and the old books makes the room feel homey. 
A flash of silver on the periphery of your vision catches your eye. It could just be the bright white of an open notebook, but you know better. Your stomach drops and you train your eyes on the front of the room.
He’s magnetic though, and you glance back at Gojo for just a moment before he reaches the back of the room and slouches into a seat. He seems as unengaged with your classmates as he had last term. It's a stark difference from the animated speaking and camaraderie he offered you at the conference. 
Even though this room is darker than the previous classroom you shared, he keeps his shades on and head down, even while he idly scrolls on his phone. 
Soon after Gojo enters, your professor calls attention to the front of the room and passes around copies of the syllabus. You center your attention on the new professor and lose yourself in the material. Between the key dates and projects for this course, there's plenty of moving parts to prioritize over your former partner. The rest of the class passes quickly, a blend of instructions and lecturing from the professor. 
By the time he dismisses your class you’ve completed several pages of notes and are already thinking of how to organize your time to meet the reading deadlines. You notice that Gojo's already left by the time you walk out the door. 
When you head towards your second class, you can’t help but wonder if Gojo will be there too. It’s possible that he may have tested out of the Assessments class you’ll have next- after all, with three degrees already completed, he’s surely had more experience with exams and testing than anyone else in the cohort. 
Luck isn’t on your side though. As usual, he enters the classroom nearly late, and finds a seat in the back of the room. 
His presence isn’t enough to dampen your mood though- creating fair and accurate assessments is crucial as a teacher, and you’ve never had formal training on how to build a good test. You try to ignore his presence the best you can. 
Similar to your first course, the majority of the period is dedicated to an initial lecture describing the importance of testing structures, the elements of design you will cover throughout the course, and how this class will build on the courses you’ve already taken. When your professor releases the class, you linger in the room to schedule the first review session with Kuzume and Saito. 
Many of your classmates filter out of the classroom quickly, but you’re too engrossed in your conversation to notice that Gojo hangs back at his desk until you gather your things to leave. 
Walking back out onto campus after a successful first day, you can’t help but feel energized and truly optimistic.
Your renewed vigor makes you eager to get a jump on your first assignments. Since it’s still the early afternoon you stop by the annex of the library and grab one of the smaller tables. The space is so much livelier than when you had visited over the break, student conversations and shuffling pages echo off the domed roof. 
The table is soon covered with the syllabi, your planner, and your laptop as you try to organize your schedule for the coming weeks. You’d managed to stay ahead of schedule last term by managing your time carefully, and you’d like to be just as successful with this round of classes. 
It’s easy to lose yourself in the stream of assignments and readings, and in the first week of the term, you allow yourself to be swept up in planning and school work. You meet with Kuzume and Saito for a “study group,” but so early in the term your session consists more of chatting and laughing together than actual review. 
As the end of summer slowly draws nearer, your days get busier and your nights become long once more, filled with readings and careful note-taking. 
Due to the nature of your classes this term, your professors are very hands on in the lectures and classroom assignments. You’re regularly asked to participate in discussions based on the initial readings and interact with your peers.
Most of your classmates offer their opinions and speak more openly with each other, but Gojo remains silent and distant. Since the symposium, you’ve given each other a wide berth, and you’re sure that as time passes, you’ll feel the loss of his friendship less keenly. Your busy schedule helps to keep him off your mind. 
On Sunday following the first week of classes, you’re enjoying the afternoon in your bright and cozy room. The good weather has held up, and if the gray weather over summer break mirrored your gloomy mood then, this sunny day couldn’t be a better indicator of your mood today. You're trying to get through the next chapter of the text for the Assessments class, and even though you’re not feeling particularly inspired by this author, you’re eager for the new knowledge.
You take a moment to stretch, then light a candle. The section is due for class tomorrow, so you try to pull your focus back to the reading. You crack the book back open, but before you can begin to re-focus, there's a knock on your door. 
Kuzume probably wants to grab lunch, and having something to eat will help you focus as you read. You grab your student ID and crack the door without a second thought, but the man standing in front of your room stops you in your tracks. 
Gojo is here. Now. 
You stare at him for a moment, mind abruptly blank. 
“Hello?” you ask dumbly. 
“Hey.” He peers down over the rims of his glasses. “Can I come in?”

4 types of college Professors
Chill - Never takes attendance. Syllabus doesn’t mean a thing. Doesn’t care if you come to class, but is so nice, you feel guilty if you don’t. Multiple people will stick their heads into the classroom during the lecture just to say hi. Goes over every question that will be on the exam in detail, then tells you they’ll let you retake it if you get less than 80%. Relates everything back to personal life in an absolutely hilarious, but always informative way. Can make the most boring subject absolutely fascinating. Knows everyone by name. Volunteers somewhere at some youth addiction treatment center. Facebook full of former students. Will answer you on Twitter before answering an email. Has multiple “favorite professor of the year” plaques. Knows all the slang. Everyone passes the class with 80% or better.
Passionate - Forgets to take the attendance more often than not. Hates giving exams - wants you to understand the material, not parrot back definitions. Will get in the fight with the college over exam requirements. Syllabus flexible and probably filled with grammatical errors. On top of current events and always armed with a dozen recent news articles relating to the course. Likely to drive something from the late ‘80s that looks to be held together with duct tape and a prayer. Gives most points for class discussions. Emails distracted but always have more information than you need. You’ll pass the class, but find yourself caring more about the stuff you learned than the grade. Writes killer recommendation letters.
Obsessive - Always takes attendance. Keeps the attendance sheet on the table until half-past starting time, just to pointedly mark off when you’ve arrived late. Syllabus has 10-12 pages and requires a doctorate degree in the subject you’re taking. If there's a mistake in it, will insist you're following instruction wrong, rather than admit to making the mistake. Mid-term contains six essay questions; the final exam is accumulative. Does not eat or drink in class, with the exception of one generic water bottle. Three research papers, each one five pages longer than the previous one. No phone in class, not even for emergencies. The textbook is God, you must memorize it. If you pass the class, you wear that as a badge of honor. You'll have no clue what their class was even about approximately 3-6 months after you’re done. You'll have nightmares about their class for years.
All Done - Always takes attendance. You aren’t there on time, don’t bother coming. Doesn’t have time for you. Teaches three other classes at the same college, a High School class, and five other classes at a different college. Just wants to retire. Never answers emails. Nods and tunes out when you’re speaking. Doesn’t get upset when you don’t do the work - seems to expect failure at every turn. Has a presidential election sticker on the car, but it’s couple of decades old, and you think this is the last time they cared about anything. The total grade consists of a few papers, a few presentations, and homework. Will collect the homework, but won’t read half of it. You never get your papers back, and probably won’t know what your grade is till 2 weeks after the class is done. You’ll pass, but a little part of your soul will die in the process.

PAINTING CLASS - FIRST DAY OF CLASS - 9/25/2023
Welcome to the 2023 FALL SEMESTER
ART2500C  or ART2502C (Painting 1 and Advanced Painting Class )
An email was sent to students over the weekend with the class instructions and other information including a link to the course blog along with the class syllabus.
We will have the first class on Monday , Sept. 25 at 12:20 pm in room 5214.
On the first day , You will only need a notebook or sketchbook to take notes.
Also on the first day, all students who have not done so, will create their own portfolio blog using the Tumblr platform and they will create a Threads  handle to follow additional instructions during the semester.
FIRST DAY INFO and class assignments for today after our class will be as follows:

This is a quick semester so students need to be mindful of time. Making a painting takes time and each assignment requires time and diligence to create a good work of art.
I will give instructions in class and students will work on their own to complete assignmnets .
Assignments will be posted on the class blog in case anyone is absent on the day instructions are given in class.
You will be able to follow guidelines as stated here.
We will review the class materials in person tomorrow , here is the most important for quick reference when you are at the store.

4) On Weds,students will begin working on an homage to that artist by recreating THEIR version , in their  own style, of the chosen artist work. 
NOTE: Choose only a painting from the artists list below that depicts a ‘still Life’ scene.
If you are not familiar with the term ‘still life’ please look it up in an artist’s dictionary or art book.
Here are some suggestions of artists :
Cezanne, Van Gogh, Monet, Matisse, Suzanne Valadon, Jacob Lawrence Alice Neel, Marie Cassatt, Audrey Flack, Berthe Morisot, Remedios Varo Pierre Bonnard, Picasso, Degas, John Singer Sargent, Dali , Georges Seurat .
Final thought, the first assignment will give you an idea of how to paint a still life and how to create interesting compositions for painted narratives.

3D - First Day of Class - 1/16/2024
Happy New Year!
Welcome to the Spring 2023-2 semester.
You received an email from me regarding the start of the semester and the class syllabus last week.
We will meet in person at 12:20 pm ,Tuesday 1/16   in room 5102. 
During the first day, we will review class info and other class requirements. I will give students the first week of class to acquire class materials. The first assignment will commence on Tuesday 1/23/24.
I am going to re-cap here some important points from the email.
On the first day of class students will spend time doing the following tasks:
1)  We will review the syllabus as a group.
2)  Students will create a Tumblr and Threads handle for class.
3) You will then look for the Threads class handle and follow that.
4) We will review  the class materials.
5) Students will go to the school library to check out a book about a particular 20th century sculptors. 
( Choose names from the list sent in the syllabus. )
6) Students will use left over class time today and Thursday to acquire and purchase class materials.
The class blog will have information regarding assignments for the 3D class.
The blog will serve as a reference source for students and will contain information regarding class assignments. 
Each time a new assignment is posted, it will start with the following designation:
3D Class.
Instructions regarding assignments will be posted here along with demo videos for review after class.
Additionally, the class blog also will have information on due dates and assignment submission.
After our in person meet on Tuesday ,  students will be given time during class today and on Thursday to buy materials needed for the new project. 
I will talk more about the materials needed for the first assignment in tomorrow in class.
Asynchronous assignment for Thursday 
There are five videos relating to the first assignment and assemblage work above this post.
On Thursday during class time, students will to watch the videos and then submit a reflection post about them.
Make sure you watch all videos.
There are SIX (6) in total.
Take notes on how and why these works are created.
1) What motivates these artists?
How do they go about collecting and assembling their work?
NOTE: The answer to the two questions above will be part of your reflection statement.
A) Homework assignment for Thursday
Students will need to collect objects and or items that will be incorporated into the assemblage project. 
You will have Thursday through Monday to collect all items.
 You will use these items and found objects to create an Assemblage Diptych that expresses two ways of working with the principle of Balance.
Balance will be express in both ways below:
1) Symmetrical Balance
2) Asymmetrical Balance
B) Homework  this weekend-
1) Make a couple of drawings in your sketchbook of what your understanding of those terms are. 
Once you have done that post those drawings as your first homework assignment on your Tumblr (Portfolio).  
Also beginning today and through the  weekend  begin looking for the objects that will comprise the structure of you Assemblage project.
You will begin this assignment next week on Tuesday , 1/23/24.
You will need to bring all of the objects and items to class next Tuesday.
As you look for objects consider the form and size in relation to the scale of your structure (Box or Board ).
Make sure you use this week to gather or get all your materials.
MATERIALS FOR TUESDAY 1/23/24
a) Glue gun
b) Glue sticks
c) Spray paint (Black or White only )
d) Two wood boards or two wooden boxes
e) Multiple (MANY ) Objects with relative scale.

3) Check out a book at the library.
4) Post a photo of your book , respond to today's thread with a photo of the book you chose.

1) Bring a mask so you do inhale the fumes while spraying.
2) DO NOT SPRAY PAINT INDOORS !
3) Pay attention when working with sharp objects.

Your first Tumblr post for Thurs. 1/18/2024 will include the following:
A) Brief summary of your understanding of the videos you watched
B) Photo of some objects you will be collecting for the assemblage assignment.
Homework to be posted on Sunday:
C) Drawings in your sketchbook of your understanding of Symmetrical and Asymmetrical Balance.
D) On Tuesday of next week students will bring all class materials to start the first assignment , Assemblage artwork.
Please note that this class requires time inside and outside of class. 3D assignments are time consuming and can not be done at the last minute.
