"People living with diabetes might have a new hope. Scientists have tested a new drug therapy in diabetic mice, and found that it boosted insulin-producing cells by 700% over three months, effectively reversing their disease.
Beta cells in the pancreas have the important job of producing insulin in response to blood sugar levels, but a hallmark of diabetes is that these cells are either destroyed or can’t produce enough insulin. The most common treatment is regular injections of insulin to manage blood sugar levels.
But a recent avenue of research has involved restoring the function of these beta cells. In some cases that’s started with stem cells being coaxed into new beta cells, which are then transplanted into patients with diabetes. Researchers behind this kind of work have described it as a “functional diabetes cure.”
Now, scientists at Mount Sinai and City of Hope have demonstrated a new breakthrough. Previous studies have mostly involved growing new beta cells in a lab dish, then transplanting them into mice or a small device in humans. But this new study has been able to grow the insulin-producing cells right there in the body, in a matter of months.
The therapy involved a combination of two drugs: one is harmine, a natural molecule found in certain plants, which works to inhibit an enzyme called DYRK1A found in beta cells. The second is a GLP1 receptor agonist. The latter is a class of diabetes drug that includes Ozempic, which is gaining attention lately for its side effect of weight loss.
The researchers tested the therapy in mouse models of type 1 and 2 diabetes. First they implanted a small amount of human beta cells into the mice, then treated them with harmine and GLP1 receptor agonists. Sure enough, the beta cells increased in number by 700% within three months of the treatment. The signs of the disease quickly reversed, and stayed that way even a month after stopping the treatment.
“This is the first time scientists have developed a drug treatment that is proven to increase adult human beta cell numbers in vivo,” said Dr. Adolfo Garcia-Ocaña, corresponding author of the study. “This research brings hope for the use of future regenerative therapies to potentially treat the hundreds of millions of people with diabetes.”
The results are intriguing, but of course being an animal study means there’s still much more work to be done before it could find clinical use. So far, harmine alone has recently undergone a phase 1 clinical trial in humans to test its safety and tolerability, while other DYRK1A inhibitors are planned for trials in humans next year.
Perhaps most importantly, the team will soon experiment with combining beta-cell-regenerating drugs with others that modulate the immune system. Ideally this should help overcome a major hurdle: the immune system will continue attacking new beta cells as they’re produced.

Results of the study appear in the journal Science Translational Medicine. “Current medications to prevent organ rejection are good overall, but they have a lot of side effects,” says lead author Imran J. Anwar, a surgical research fellow in Duke University��s department of surgery. “These therapies suppress the immune system, putting patients at risk of infections and organ damage, and many cause non-immune complications such as diabetes and high blood pressure. “The push over the last 30 to 40 years has been to develop new, less toxic drugs,” Anwar says. “We are hopeful this antibody moves us closer to that goal.”

This not-so-good news didn't come as a surprise to Lucien. He nodded and said, “Ah He, you've worked hard these past few days. Take a good rest over the weekend, and next week, we'll come back to discuss improvement strategies.”
“But we've already improved almost every aspect,” Ah He swallowed the words on the tip of his tongue and glanced at Lucien's composed profile. “In addition, two new deteriorating patients have signed the drug trial observation agreement. Here are the records.”
Lucien took the file and opened it, quickly scanning the text inside.
“The first patient is forty-two years old, an Evolver with superhuman vision. Diagnosed with glaucoma seven years ago, their vision started deteriorating significantly six months ago. After genetic screening, it was confirmed that the condition was caused by deterioration.”
As he turned to the next page, Lucien's gaze froze.

Lucien unlocked his computer screen, and a medical report appeared on the screen. The diagnosis result, highlighted in red and bolded was glaring and prominent – “Gene Deterioration Detected.”
The deterioration level line graph in the report progressed steadily, almost identical to the first half of the line graph of the second patient on the desktop.
As the report page slowly scrolled upward, a profile picture gradually appeared in the upper right corner.
He glanced indifferently at his own face in the photo, closed the document, and leaned back in his office chair, closing his eyes to rest.
The heart within his chest cavity beat steadily, just like every other day, strong and composed. No changes appeared to have occurred, yet hidden beneath the surface, there seemed to be an undercurrent that was difficult to detect, waiting for an opportunity to stir things up.
His brief reverie was interrupted by the ringing of his phone.
“Hello, Mr. Lucien. Your latest lab test report is ready. Please come to the laboratory during business hours to collect it.”
[If you remember- In S2 chapter chapter 31-1 Lucien mentioned that his situation regarding blood disease is unique. From this R&S I guess what he means by unique situation is that his deterioration wasn't REALLY bad until he started to overuse evol, mainly for the sake of protecting MC. This evol overuse will get worse in S2 chapter 51 :D]

“Everything has been normal. I've used Evol a few times, but not excessively,” Lucien quickly counted the number of times he had used Evol in his mind over the past month.
It was around seven or eight times, within a manageable range.
The doctor pushed the report in front of Lucien with a serious expression. “Your deterioration had been well-controlled previously, but this time, there are changes in various indicators. Platelet count has decreased, and there might be a slight impact on your clotting function. Additionally—”

The door swung open, and Pete briskly walked up to the desk, handing over a stack of research reports.
“Professor, there have been new developments in the experiment data regarding the neuronal position for maintaining neuron function. Detailed results and data are all written in the report. We can start the next phase of experiments tomorrow.”
Lucien quickly glanced at the data and results on the report, and he smiled.
“The results are even better and faster than I had imagined. After work, you can take everyone out to celebrate. Consider it a team-building event, and the institute will reimburse it.”
“You should join us too; the rapid progress of the experiment owes much to the insights you've given us. Everyone wants to thank you.”
Lucien paused for a moment, then continued nonchalantly, “Make a reservation for one more seat, and thank you for your hard work.”
“Sure thing! I'll go inform the others right away.”
After Pete left the office, Lucien shifted his gaze to the dormant screen. He saw his own blurry silhouette, and the lingering smile on his lips confirmed his fleeting good mood.
Maybe... He agreed a bit too quickly just now.
Lucien shook his mouse, and a dense data set appeared on the screen again. It was an observation report from NW on unusual energy fluctuations within Loveland City, as well as the strange phenomena they had generated. This report piqued his interest, and according to the original plan, he should have worked late to finish this research tonight.
However, occasionally participating in such activities could be beneficial for teamwork. Lucien hesitated for only three seconds before saving the document and shutting down the computer.

[Chapter 3]
“Swoosh-”
The clear water rinsed away the remnants of liquid in the test tube, and a momentary daydream washed over his relaxed mind. The scene from this morning when he left home reappeared before his eyes.
As Lucien opened his door, the opposite door also swung open, and a girl rushed out with a box of milk in hand. Her hair was slightly disheveled, clearly a result of rushing and not having time to tidy up for work.
He smiled faintly, but strangely, she seemed completely unaware of his presence and focused on her phone, anxiously waiting for the elevator.
In the next moment, the girl's figure seemed to “disappear,” but the elevator remained on the top floor, not descending.
He was briefly taken aback but quickly realized that this was likely the phenomenon caused by the energy fluctuations he had recently seen in the NW observation report on Loveland City. The unknown energy disturbance in the vicinity had created a “rift” in spacetime, and the girl was merely a projected illusion.
The sound of glass clinking brought Lucien back to reality, and he noticed that the test tube in his hand had bumped into the beaker.
“Professor, are you feeling a bit tired? Maybe I should take care of this for you,”
Lucien smiled in response to Pete's concern and began placing the lab equipment into the washing machine. “No need, nothing is pressing right now. I'll consider organizing equipment as a form of rest.”
Although the work on hand was never-ending, under her supervision, he had already learned to carve out some breathing space for himself.
During moments of complete relaxation, unexpected thoughts often diverged in his mind, which brought him happiness. However, lately, whenever he tried to clear his mind, the girl's image and voice would involuntarily “visit” him.
Seeing the slight, involuntary upward curve of his lips, Pete gave him a knowing look and half-jokingly asked, “Professor, are you going on a date later?”
“She's been quite busy lately.” Lucien subtly concealed the thoughts he had inadvertently revealed just now and continued, “Pete, have you chosen a topic for your thesis?”
“It's almost ready. This time, I plan to research 'Using Evol Energy to Stimulate Brain Cells for Alzheimer's Disease Treatment.' I'll put together a formal document for you to review.”
“I remember you were interested in brain memory restoration and extraction before, and you had many intriguing ideas. Are you not planning to explore that area this time?”
“Afterward, I reconsidered. There's more literature available on Alzheimer's disease, and the current market demand is higher. It seems like a more prudent choice.”
Lucien's gaze shifted slightly, not missing the hint of regret that flashed in Pete's eyes.
“I actually think that if it's a topic that interests you, you should give it a try,” Lucien blurted out his most direct thought, receiving a surprised look from Pete.
“What everyone else is doing may be the safer choice, but it's not necessarily the best choice.”
“Uncharted territory doesn't always equate to a dead end; it's just that, in many cases, people tend to instinctively seek the safer path.”
“But in research, the most valuable quality is the persistence to explore and seek knowledge.”
On the way back home, Lucien continued to contemplate the events of the afternoon.
In the realm of scientific research, aiming for safety was not necessarily a mistake; it often led to higher success rates. So, when he made that suggestion, it wasn't solely from an objective standpoint but also a personal desire that the researchers he had mentored could challenge more difficult domains.
Suddenly, a faintly familiar sweet fragrance wafted to his nostrils. He followed the scent and turned to see her favorite cream puff shop.
“Maybe I should buy one and give it a try.”
A few minutes later, Lucien sat on a park bench holding a freshly baked cream puff. He wasn't particularly fond of cream puffs, but the idea that had occurred to him a moment ago had struck without warning. Before he could contemplate the reason behind this thought, his body had already acted on it.
The cream puff, still warm inside its paper bag, emitted a subtle fragrance. He took a gentle bite, the crispy outer shell giving way to the creamy filling, creating a delicate taste on his tongue.
This cream puff wasn't overly sweet and the sweetness that could be detected was minimal.
This subtle sweetness triggered dopamine, and an inexplicable sensation gradually spread from his chest to his limbs. It seemed like his brain had received this pleasurable signal, making him feel considerably more relaxed.
So, this was what she meant by the happiness brought by sweets.
He slowly savored each bite of the cream puff.
Lucien knew that an irreversible change had occurred within himself.

[Chapter 4]
Inside the research lab, the mechanical hum of instruments droned on rhythmically, and the stark white lights cast a cold silver gleam on the metal plaques with “NW” written on them.
“Blood pressure stable, sinus rhythm normal, no adverse reactions.”
“According to the drug's suggestions, he will act according to our instructions after leaving this lab.”
Lucien glanced through the glass at the person lying on the observation room bed.
“Conduct thorough post-experiment observations, don't overlook any minor irregularities.”
“Alright. Also, Professor Lucien, your ETL-147* drug trial application has been approved, and you need to sign the liability waiver.” The lab technician handed the paperwork to Lucien, looking somewhat hesitant.
“Are you sure you want to personally participate in the drug trial? Although we've conducted preliminary human trials, we haven't done large-scale clinical trials yet, and there are certain risks involved.”
Lucien quickly signed his name. “Trying it myself is the only way to discover areas that may need improvement.”
[I was right about Lucien experimenting on himself with that drug :"D. Anyway, ETL-147 is the same drug from S2 chapter 45]
“Once you've decided, you'll need to receive the injection within the confines of NW with someone present, as per the regulations.”
“Then let's do it now.”
Declining the researcher's offer to assist, Lucien skillfully rolled up his sleeve and disinfected the area. As he watched the liquid in the syringe decrease, he blinked slightly, concealing some contemplation.
“You can go ahead, I'll observe here for half an hour. If there are any issues, I'll reach out to you.”
He watched the researcher leave and then lowered his gaze to his arm, which had a tourniquet in place. Testing the drug on himself wasn't solely for drug research. He could increasingly feel that something was changing within him, hiding and flowing in the gaps of his nerves, elusive and slipping out of his control.
That's why he needed insurance.
He didn't wait for half an hour and left the observation room. The solemn and cold corridor echoed only with the light sound of his footsteps. Each corner had a circular surveillance device with a flashing red indicator light, watching his unhurried steps. He paid little attention to them as he arrived at Archive Room 8.
“Authentication personnel, Lucien. Authorization Level: Three.”
With a beep of an electronic tone, the door to the archive opened for him.
Rows of gray filing cabinets stood in order. He walked deeper into the room, stopping at the second-to-last row. From one of the shelves, he pulled out a file box.
“Blood Disorders and Deterioration Case Files.”
He opened the lid and browsed through the materials inside. During his involvement in the research of anti-blood disorder drugs at NW, Lucien had seen most of these files. As he turned a page, his slender fingers paused.
“Code **, deterioration level reached as high as 95%, reversed deterioration after ** experiment, and after a period of observation, full recovery of human functions, deterioration level reduced to 7%. Detailed information requires special-level clearance to access.”
Looking at the encrypted data, Lucien's lips curved upward without a hint of a smile. He returned the file box to its original place.
It seemed there were quite a few deals he could make here.

“To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower. Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour. A truth that’s told with bad intent, beats all the lies you can invent...”

Under the camphor tree swayed by the autumn breeze, he softly recited verses from the book. Sensing the girl in his arms gradually breathing deeper, he closed the book and gently brushed a strand of hair from the corner of her eye.
In the warm breeze, Lucien slowly opened his eyes, gazing at the familiar cold white ceiling of his office, feeling a slight sense of déjà vu.
This was the fourth time in these seven days that he had dreamt of her.
Since the deterioration, he had hardly experienced any physical discomfort. However, the frequency of thinking about her had increased significantly. He didn't resist this feeling; in fact, every time he thought of her unintentionally, the neurons in his brain transmitted a sense of pleasure to every cell.
He ran his fingers over his knuckles; the wounds from his struggle with GR had scabbed over, but she still applied bandages to them cautiously. Lucien pressed his temple to clear his mind a bit, then returned to his desk, opened a document, and entered the latest date.
“Dreamt of her in a dream, vivid memory of dream content, but ruled out as a recollection.”
After recording this, he opened his email.
This was the latest data on energy fluctuations within Loveland City. On the vast map of Loveland City, there were numerous unusual energy fluctuations. After comparing the fluctuation charts for each period, he noticed the locations where fluctuations were concentrated at different times.
Approximately 36 days ago at around 18:39, Central Park. He and the girl had gone to the night market in the park after work, and they had dinner at a street food stall.
Approximately 27 days ago at around 12:25, the Life Sciences Institute. She came to bring him lunch and, in passing, asked him about the topic for the next program.
15 days ago at 23:48, his apartment. To celebrate the upcoming weekend, they stayed up late watching a movie and didn't return home until very late. She stood at his doorstep and bid him goodnight.
Nine days ago...
The light from the screen reflected a coldness in his pupils as he stared at the map with red markers blinking in different locations.
The center of the fluctuations, once again, was that source of power that had captivated countless people—CORE.
The more beautifully the flower bloomed, the more it attracted annoying flies.
A sudden sense of irritation welled up within him.
What would it take to keep those ill-intentioned insects away from this deeply-rooted flower?
“Snap.”
The light sound shattered the silence as the pen fell to the ground and rolled twice before coming to a stop by his feet.
That sudden absurd idea had torn away all pretense, revealing the raw instinct in its entirety.
— If she had her own path, she shouldn't be trapped by him.
— Don't restrain yourself with rationality, look at your true heart.
Perhaps that dream had already given him a hint. The scales in his heart had gradually tilted away from reason, moving in an unexpected direction.
— She withstood all the wind and rain that came her way, growing resiliently into someone he found truly remarkable. He couldn't encase her within his protective glass cover.
— Are you really don't expect it? Really don't want to possess her? Humans are inherently greedy. Indulgence is human nature.
Lucien felt as though there was a consciousness from a deeper layer detaching from his body, standing at a higher vantage point, watching with keen interest as the two voices in his mind continued their ongoing debate.
Perhaps his own deterioration graph had already started its inexorable ascent towards an unpreventable height, progressing towards the final moment that could arrive at any time.
He suddenly realized that he wasn't as averse to facing that moment as he thought. All the changes in his body were intriguing, both evolution and destruction.
Cells and genes evolved over countless years to adapt to their environment, giving birth to more complete species. However, the incompleteness of the Evol gene led to human deterioration, going in the opposite direction of evolution.
Perhaps Evol held a meaning deeper than “evolution” and “power,” a meaning that no one, including him, had yet to comprehend.
His phone vibrated suddenly, bringing the storm in his mind to an abrupt halt. The girl's name accompanied a text message that appeared before him.
“Do you have time tonight? I found a new barbecue place on Huapu Street.”
“Of course, I'll pick you up after work.”
Perhaps he shouldn't see her now; if he did, this imbalance might intensify rapidly.
But why not indulge in something that brought him happiness?
Lucien closed his eyes.
This self-observation finally introduced more significant variables.

Werewolf Fact #70 - Werewolves in medical history + "clinical lycanthropy"
The results of the werewolf fact poll over on my Patreon are in, and now we have this month's werewolf fact: all about werewolves in historical medical treatises of the Renaissance/Early Modern period and the term "clinical lycanthropy," as well as what all that means and how it still impacts werewolf studies and werewolf pop culture today.
This post will make use of a lot of primary sources, which I always find fun, so buckle up!

I've done several posts touching upon subjects similar to this before, you might be familiar with them, such as how werewolves in folklore are the result of a curse instead of a disease, and my two-parter on when werewolves became associated with insanity (Part 1 and Part 2 are here). You can also read a whole lot more about that topic and my arguments regarding it in my thesis, which was on werewolves, and can be found here on Amazon.com (hardback coming soon!).
However, I have never really delved in detail into a few of the actual medical treatises written during the Renaissance/Early Modern Period - in other words, primary sources - of which we have several. In this post, I will cover a few, but not all. I'm also going to make mention of a few more modern ones in regard to clinical lycanthropy, but let's start with older first...
First of all, there was a lot of discussion of "melancholy" in the 1500s in regard to werewolves. This was even referenced in the play The Duchess of Malfi (and I actually have an academic article dedicated to the discussion of the lines involving werewolves in said play). This is, of course, related to the ancient Greek theory of humors, in which the composition of the human body and health required the balance of four humors: black bile (earth), blood (air), choler (fire), and phlegm (water), each related to one of the classic elements.
Throughout the Renaissance, "wolf-madness" was attributed to a case of melancholy, or an excess of black bile. There are many examples of this. And, of course, there are also many attributions to Satan... which was not a thing at all before this time period, as before this, werewolves were even sometimes associated with Christianity (see: werewolves of Ossory, among others).
An oft-referenced source in both werewolf studies at large as well as my own works is "Admirable and Memorable Histories" by I. Goulart, from around 1607 and translated from French by Ed Grimeston; I use this source from my book A Lycanthropy Reader by Charlotte F. Otten. Please note that the language of the piece is dated, so it will read funny to modern audiences.
Goulart discusses "Licanthropes and mad-men, the which wee will consider of two sorts," not necessarily equating those suffering from "lycanthropy" as mad-men, but as those "in whom the melancholike humor doth so rule, as they imagine themselves to be transformed into Wolves." He refers to them as "counterfet Wolves" and discusses how they "runne into Church-yardes, and about graves," something not uncommonly seen in the newfangled werewolf sources of the 1600s onward but not commonplace in werewolf legends of previous time periods.
Goulart also discusses men "tormented with an evill spirit, that at a certaine season of the yeare, hee imagined himselfe to bee a ravening Wolfe," and references other elements seen only in the later werewolf trials as opposed to previous werewolf legends. I also can't help but wonder if the "certain season" element is something Curt Siodmak saw and carried over into the original werewolf in The Wolf Man turning during a particular season (when wolfsbane blooms in autumn)...
Anyway, another of Goulart's sources is Job Fincel in 1541, who describes werewolves in ways we see around a lot when googling and finding garbage on the internet but not so much in legends previously, such as how those afflicted with the "disease" of believing themselves to become a wolf (but not actually turning into one) "are pale, their eyes are hollow, and they see ill, their tongue is drye, they are much altered, and are without much spittle in the mouth." This is consistent with particular illnesses rather than anything seen in werewolf legends, as these are not the people who truly become wolves, only those who believe that they do - and Goulart was still drawing lines between those with hallucinations, those who actually change shape, and those who are werewolves by other means. For example, Goulart also discusses the idea of people whose souls fly from their own bodies and enter into the forms of wolves instead.
There are other examples that discuss these same topics, of course, including but not at all limited to "Diseases of the Mind" by Robert Burton and "A Treatise" by Robert Bayfield, both of which are also featured in A Lycanthropy Reader, and there are plenty of others in assorted other werewolf studies publications.
Now, in addition to these older examples, we also have much more recent medical studies regarding what is known in modernity as "clinical lycanthropy."
Here's a fun fact: the term "lycanthropy" wasn't ever used in antiquity to refer to werewolf legends. It was created by the medical profession in the 1500s to refer specifically to a form of madness, not shapeshifting. It referred to what was recognized as a mental illness that they called lycanthropy: someone believing that they turned into a wolf, not to someone actually turning into a wolf (as in, not referring to the legends in which this happened).
Today, we call this "clinical lycanthropy," because the term "lycanthropy" was basically taken by werewolf media and werewolf studies and retroactively applied to werewolf legends. But the term "lycanthropy" was never actually used in said legends.
The term "lycanthropy" to refer to a "werewolf disease" is just another way in which medical studies and Renaissance writings turned werewolf legends into a "werewolf disease" instead of a magical curse, as it always used to be.
Now, of course, the medical world doesn't really recognize "clinical lycanthropy" anymore. It's considered to be a part of other mental conditions, the result of drug-induced hallucinations, or something entirely different. Several cases were attributed to schizophrenia instead, for example. So the term "clinical lycanthropy" in itself is all but outdated.
I won't be including or directly quoting from the case reports from the 1970s in this discussion, as this post is already enormous and, frankly, the case reports are not things that could be easily discussed in today's environment, as the language in the reports would certainly be considered offensive today, and that's not something I want to navigate. So I won't get into all that. They're out there if you want to read them, but I won't bother breaking them down here.
There are also certainly other examples of medical history relating to werewolves and werewolf legends, but I'll save all that for the werewolf facts book or another publication of mine!
Medical treatises are just another example from the Renaissance (and for quite a while after, into at least the 1800s and even early 1900s) of trying to rationalize and find "scientific explanations" for all manner of folklore and mythology. This also resulted in a considerable amount of condemnation for those who still believed in this sort of thing, as well as those who believed themselves to be experiencing it. As mentioned in some of my other werewolf facts, this didn't always include punishment (many victims of clinical lycanthropy at the time were actually well taken care of), but it did include things like being locked away from society for being declared insane. And, of course, if the victim in question was not a victim but a perpetrator, then it would result in a trial and punishment - and often execution. However, this was much more likely to happen to witches rather than werewolves. Just another way in which the trial of Peter Stubbe were very obviously witch/sorcerer trials and had nothing to do with werewolves at all.
Now, of course, you'll also recognize that a lot of the things you see in the treatises I used as examples don't follow up with many or even any werewolf legends you're very familiar with. Things were getting a bit weird at this point in history in regard to folklore and the like, and the reaching for rationalizing something like a person turning into a wolf or wolf-monster of any sort certainly resulted in some wild connections.
While this is far from the werewolf legends that personally fascinate me most, they are an important part of werewolf studies - hugely so. In fact, they're often discussed more than almost anything else, because unfortunately werewolf scholars are overly obsessed with later time periods that I personally find less fun and interesting than the Middle Ages and ancient times. But, hey, I love all of it.

On September 12, 2024, Japanese Member of Parliament Ryuhei Kawada led a highly charged emergency press conference in Japan, voicing deep skepticism about the country's upcoming launch of mRNA replicon vaccines, or what some call self-amplifying mRNA vaccines. The event set off alarm bells among critics of government policies, accusing authorities of prioritizing pharmaceutical profits over public health.
What are mRNA Replicon Vaccines?
As you know, mRNA COVID vaccines, like those developed by Pfizer and Moderna for COVID-19, use a small piece of genetic code (mRNA) to instruct your cells to produce a piece of the virus known as the spike protein.
On the other hand, self-amplifying mRNA vaccines, or replicon vaccines, represent a more advanced version where the mRNA not only instructs your cells to produce the spike protein but also makes copies of itself (yay! more mRNA…) once inside the cells.
ARCT-154, scheduled to be administered to the population in October 2024, is a self-amplifying mRNA COVID-19 vaccine from the dynamic duo of Arcturus Therapeutics and Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore. In Japan, Arcturus Therapeutics found an ally in CSL Seqirus for crafting and distributing their vaccines through a local pharma company called Meiji Seika Pharma.
Arcturus Therapeutics is a biotech company located in San Diego, California, established in 2013. Just like Moderna, which didn't release any products to the market until their mRNA experimental COVID vaccine, Arcturus also hasn't launched any medical products yet, and their self-amplifying mRNA vaccine will be their first.
Arcturus was formed through a merger with Alcobra Pharma, an Israeli pharmaceutical company, after Alcobra faced difficulties during clinical trials, which led to their merger with Arcturus Therapeutics in 2017. Interestingly, Alcobra translates to “The Cobra.” You have to wonder who decided that naming their pharma company after a snake was a good idea. At this point, my eyes are rolling all the way to the back of my head, so I will stop talking about the company’s history here.

It's battle of the macrolides for this matchup! Both these meds work by binding the 50S subunit of ribosomes, preventing translation. So who's better?
Azithromycin: The most prescribed anti-microbial in the US. It's a derivative of erythromycin with improved gram negative coverage as well as gram positive and atypicals coverage. Azithromycin's main game is the lungs, where it's useful for almost every pneumonia as well as COPD exacerbations; it's even used off-label as post-transplant prophylaxis for bronchiolitis obliterans. It is also considered to be safer than erythromycin with fewer adverse cardiac effects.
Erythromycin: Erythromycin has some unique applications, such as prophylaxis for gonococcal ophthalmia neonatorum, for which it is the only FDA-approved drug. However, its efficacy in this role has been called into question recently, with some--like the Canadian Paediatric Society--calling for a shift to maternal screening instead. Another unique application is as a treatment for gastroparesis. Though it's far from first line (and the American College of Gastroenterologists 2023 clinical guidelines for gastroparesis treatment don't even recommend it), it's been used off-label for gastroparesis since the 1990s. It was the first macrolide demonstrated to be a motilin receptor agonist, and so it became a favored alternative to metoclopramide. There are no randomized trials as of yet directly comparing the efficacy of azithromycin and erythromycin for gastroparesis, and so erythromycin remains the favorite by default. Unfortunately, it is more likely to prolong the QT interval than azithromycin.

how do you think the Undertaker will go about these soul transplants? Unlike blood, souls are much more abstract in nature and can't just be (if I may put it to bluntly) be sucked out of someones body and pumped into someone else. But regardless, his plan is doomed to fail and I just hope that he's not gonna die in the end :(

Soul transplant "surgery"
It would definitely be more surgical-like than sucking it out and pumping it in. Less like blood transfusions and liposuction... and more like an organ transplant.
To humans, a soul would be ethereal, but to demons and reapers it's likely something they can hold, just about as easily as a kidney or heart. Maybe not quite that physically tangible but nearly. How else would reapers be able to collect them and demons be able to eat them?
And why else would Jane, Heathfield, and that matron at F. O. L. talk about making souls match, sometimes even referring to their shapes?
I think of souls in the Kuroverse being somewhat moldable but only to an extent. In Jujutsu Kaisen, the curse Mahito doesn't seem to be able to create souls, but he can definitely manipulate/reshape souls; when he changes the shape of a soul, it actually changes the shape of whatever body it's in. If he is injured, instead of healing himself, he just preserves or reshapes his own soul to fix the injury; he can even replace lost limbs this way.
In the Kuroverse, reapers cannot make souls, either. Reapers don't even have Mahito's soul-shaping abilities. That's why Undertaker has this orphanage running "clinical trials". They start out with children because they are less set in their ways; they are more moldable. First, they are separated into four classes, based on blood type. That's the first level of compatibility.
They also take those "aptitude" tests about favorite animals, foods, etc, but choosing the "wrong" answers on those tests doesn't get you placed in another class, since class is ultimately based on blood type. What they do is force kids who have the blood type but lack the same preferences to get used to those things that are expected of their "aptitude". Some of them never fit the mold:
Ginny (Corgi) still didn't particularly like horses.
Nick (Pom) wants to play outside and prefers foods served to the other classes.
Daniel (Collie) can't stand wearing a dress or doing so-called "women's work".
Milly (Collie) doesn't like the food served to "her" class. (Staff refers to Milly as a girl, so Milly might otherwise fit the aptitude pretty well, unless it's a translation error.)
These students who make poor candidates end up being used for blood and possibly some organs.
The top students match not just the blood types but also the "aptitudes" of their respective star lords:
Theo probably likes being indoors, likes dogs, likes the menus for the Pomeranian class (probably prefers strawberry cake over chocolate), likes to read and play chess, etc. He's smart and charming, too.
Oliver is shy and tries to make it seem like he's not a good match, but that's only because he knows something is wrong. But he's a good cook (when he's paying attention) and his embroidery skills are top notch. He seems skilled in the martial arts they learn. He must not care too much what he wears. He likes the food that the Collies eat -- or he just doesn't complain -- and he probably adores whatever animal Layla likes best.
Artie is stubborn and might not like some aspects of being in Mastiff class, but he doesn't complain, since he thinks/thought the orphanage is/was his only chance of finding a decent job later. He probably likes whatever animal Polaris likes best. He doesn't mind hard work. He takes pride in what he does and keeps the other students in line, even if they aren't in his class.
Mabel must like horses (though that option isn't on the aptitude test), sports/athletics, and being outside. She likes whatever animal Doll likes best, possibly the weasel. She eats what's served to her class. She's friendly and outgoing.
These are the four kids most likely to be used for not just blood and organs... but also their souls. It's particularly bad that in ch204 they've all now been caught snooping around the orphanage. They officially know too much now about the place. (Gee, thanks, Emily. 🙄)
Theo was about to be fledged, but now all four top students could get "mass fledged". I hope any attempt to kill them off fails! I don't want Undertaker to use their souls for the star lords.
He might have already tried with earlier candidates that seemed to fit their aptitudes well, but they didn't work out as hoped. And he could eventually try with our earl (for real Ciel, of course). Theo might survive simply because Yana-san wants Undertaker to feel forced to combine the twins, like as some last resort.
But what would a soul transplant procedure actually look like?
That's your main question. We don't know much about the nature of souls in the Kuroverse, especially in manga canon. We just know that the anime staff for s2 let Claude steal "Ciel's" soul and keep it in a ring in a tin of tea leaves. He also traps Alois/Jim's soul in a ring. It's not explained how he does that... or how he transfers these souls back out of the rings and into bodies. We do know that the concept of soul shapes exists in s2, or at least compatibility based on similar life experiences; Claude reinforces the similarities between "Ciel" and Alois/Jim before combining both souls into one body. Again, the how isn't explained.
No telling whether Undertaker will ever explain how to transfer a soul from one body to another, but he might also use some device as a temporary vessel. A hair locket, perhaps. The new soul would need to "fit" the shaped "hole" left behind by the soul that's gone. If the fit isn't just right, the person is likely to behave erratically or maybe even become lethargic -- some sort of physical reaction that shows it's not working right. Could even be the person spouting nonsense or screaming in agony. Such reactions would suggest the person is experiencing some form of existential crisis or something, right? Struggling to separate body from soul. Worst case scenario might be the person trying to rip out the soul but in reality they just rip themselves apart. These different reactions are basically organ rejection... but against souls instead of a kidney or liver.
If the soul matches well enough, the person might start to behave pretty much the same as before they ever died, though they might develop certain quirks they didn't have before.
It would be interesting -- dreadful, but interesting -- to see our earl's soul placed into the body of real Ciel, since it's been emphasized they are mirror twins. Presumably, their souls mirror each other, too. If that's true, then our earl's soul would essentially have to be implanted backwards/faced the opposite direction. This could lead to a particularly dangerous mismatch!
When Undertaker is finally confronted again (by our earl and Sebastian, as well as by reapers), he's likely to eventually be forced to give up, if he doesn't just fight to his own death. By then, his experiments are likely to have failed, in some way. Sadly, his chances of surviving the series are pretty low. He might even end up on Othello's examination table. 😔
Truth is, what does Undertaker have left, if this all-consuming project is a major failure? Where does he go? What does he do? His doomed end is almost an inevitability, in terms of storytelling traditions....

Hey all, so earlier on @box-dwelling's post about Phoenix being kind to Apollo, I talked about a story in the official manga. Well, here is that story. I don't think that this story has ever been scanned and translated anywhere, whereas most of the others are floating around.
I didn't want to ruin my book, so rather than scan each page properly, I have taken pictures with my phone. Sorry for the less-than-stellar quality. Also, I translated this using Google Lens, so the translation may not be perfectly accurate but I think it's pretty good.

p1 Trucy: Daddy, are you going to just leave the hospital without permission? Phoenix: I'm sorry, Trucy, it's because I don't have much free time. Hotti: Well, I'm glad you're feeling better. sfx: heh heh Phoenix: Yeah, but I still have stiff shoulders. It's awful. Apollo: That doesn't have anything to do with anything!! Apollo: If you're going to be discharged from the hospital, at least pack up your stuff properly.
p2 Phoenix: I'm sorry, it's because I had free time. sfx: ha ha ha Apollo: If you have free time, you can also clean it up, right?! Phoenix: Ahahaha. You've grown up, Apollo.
