FLASHBack: Week 80 [First-Class FLASHBack] - Resident Evil: Flash Edition

In this month's First-Class FLASHBack, we're going to look at animations by Joseph "Legendary Frog" Blanchette parodying the Resident Evil Series of video games. Because, as we approach what is the United States' most important national holiday, I can't think of anything more American than a story about a horrific lethal virus and a corporation that puts power and profit foremost without stopping to consider even for a moment the health and well-being of the general populace.   However, I'm severely out of my depth on this one, as I have very little first hand knowledge of the Resident Evil games. I never really watched these Flashes the first time around, so any trivia or historical context is going to be sparse at best this time around. Resident Evil: Flash Edition was the 6th animation Blanchette made, and was uploaded to Newgrounds on 29 September 2002; it was a parody of the famously bad acting in the game's opening cinematic, and took Newgrounds' Daily 2nd Place. One notable easter egg is the fact that one of the newspapers shown at the beginning of the animation has an image from Joseph's Final Fantasy Tribute animation, from the part where Aeris beats up Sephiroth. There's also an appearance by the memory-wiping Neuralizer tool from the Men In Black franchise, and the white house from the Zork series of text adventures and video games (specifically how the house appeared in Zork: Grand Inquisitor).  

While Blanchette would tease a spoof of Resident Evil: Code Veronica at the end of his first Resident Evil animation after the credits, his next Resident Evil Flash would be I Am Resident Evil, posted to Newgrounds on 22 December 2002. This one would earn Legendary Frog the Daily Feature award, and was inspired by the U.S. Army's "Army of One" recruitment ad campaign. The original Flash ended with Alfred Ashford continuing to ramble on over the end credits, only to be told his time is up. When Blanchette converted it to video for his YouTube channel, he cuts it before the credits roll, because that was the point when Alfred's time was up.   Joseph would finally skewer Resident Evil: Code Veronica on 16 July 2005 with Code Veronica: Flash Edition, earning him a spot on Newgrounds' Front Page the next day, as well as Daily 3rd Place, and Weekly 2nd Place awards. Like the game itself, the Flash featured notes laying on desks seemingly in the background, that were actually able to be selected and read. Reading these notes would unlock different outfits for Claire: One based on her look in Resident Evil 2, one modeled on Legendary Frog's OC Kerrigan, and then of course, the obligatory bikini "Summer Outfit".   Blanchette has made some Creator's Commentary for Resident Evil: Flash Edition, and Code Veronica: Flash Edition where he talks a little on his thought processes behind making the Flashes. He also has a playlist of several short comedy bits that were intended to be part of a multi-animator Resident Evil collaboration project that ended up falling through. Finally, to switch gears to another one of our First-Class creators here on FLASHBack, even though I've mentioned it before, I can't do a post about Resident Evil and Flash without bringing up the fact that Jonti "Mr. Weebl" Picking did the CG Animation of The Hive for the first Resident Evil film.   Next week, an antidote to all this grimdark survival horror. Does anyone still want Quentin Beck/Reader things?

Words: 1,140 Pairing: Quentin Beck/Reader Plot: Post Civil War, Quentin’s attempts to adjust to his new life leave him feeling drained, and it’s starting to effect his marriage Content warning: Some language, brief descriptions that may trigger the feeling of depression. Exactly one (1) mouth kiss Notes: Originally written as Quentin/self insert OC, just rearranged the pronouns to make it an x-reader fic, so some areas might still have “she” “her” “Veronica” or weird grammar if I missed them in the editing process. Quentin may seem OOC? I really just wanted to try my hand at a genuine Quentin Beck hurt/comfort fic and I’m pretty happy with the results.

Quentin Beck was a lot of things. Stupid wasn’t one of them. He was perceptive. He saw your interest in his well being start to fade out months ago. Part of the reason why he took to sleeping on the couch. It wasn’t like he intentionally chose to dim the spark in your relationship. You just didn’t understand. 

Tony Stark had taken everything from him. His life’s work, his career, and at this point, his previously happy marriage looked like it was going to be next. Sometimes, rarely, always a fleeting, flash in the pan moment, where he wasn’t all-consumed by greed and hatred and anger, he considered just getting another job. He had Stark on his resume, any tech company in New York would be lucky to have him. He wouldn’t be devoting his life to seek revenge on the man who’d taken everything from him, tireless hours in front of a computer screen, your calls to bed and general wellness checks falling on deaf ears. 

But then he’d remember. Remember the pain and suffering and general feeling of hopelessness. He had to do this. It was the only way.

But he was tired.

Tired, and burnt out, feeling more irritated by the second. He was getting lazy. He was messing up codes because his sleeplessness was affecting his attention to detail. He was moments away from throwing the laptop off the coffee table in a rage, when your voice, flat and uninterested, floated into his ears from the doorway of what used to be your shared bedroom “No chance me asking you to come to bed will do anything tonight?”

“Bed.” he exhaled, eyeing the computer, still on the table. He needed that. He couldn’t afford to smash it on the ground. “Bed...sounds good.”

Of course he noticed the shock in your eyes as he pulled himself up off the sofa, but he didn’t respond to it, dragging his feet into the bedroom. He didn’t bother to change out of his clothes, he’d been wearing the same outfit for at least three days now, he’d given up comfort well beyond hours ago. His face hit the pillow with a thud as he closed his eyes, hoping that it might shut the non-stop swirl of thoughts out. 

As he felt your body crawl into her side of the bed, he reached an arm out, automatically, subconsciously, habitually. Even with just one arm loosely draped around your side, he could tell the fabric of your pajamas. Well, they weren’t even your pajamas. It was one of his shirts. He wondered, momentarily, if you’d taken to wearing his clothes to bed more routinely since he’d been sleeping in the living room. He couldn’t recall what you’d been wearing the last few nights you halfheartedly tried to pull him off the couch. He hadn’t even spared you that much attention.

Quite the opposite from the first time you’d worn one of his shirts to bed. He remembered it so clearly; waking up to you still in bed with him for the first time in the two months you’d been hooking up, himself in just his underwear, you buttoned up in one of his pajama shirts, hanging more like a dress over your frame, though it only barely covered that pert little ass of yours. How fucking sexy it was, to have you lying on his chest, wearing his clothes, in his bedroom. You were completely and utterly his, and he’d adored that feeling. You were still his, he realized, suddenly. You wouldn’t still be here, still in his clothes, of all things, if you weren’t. Letting his eyes slowly blink open, he dragged his hand down to meet yours, fumbling a bit until he found the finger he wanted, gently, slowly, twisting her ring back and forth. For now, at least, until he messed this up like he did everything else, you were still his.

“Quen, babe,” your voice was strained and almost more of a croak. “What’s going on?”

He didn’t verbalize an answer. He wasn’t sure what he would come out if he tried. “I’m just trying to enjoy you while you’re still here”? “Why haven’t you left already”? “You know the old me is dead and never coming back and I’m just a shell of the man you married”? None of those were exactly romantic. Or eloquent. Or thoughts that he was at all ready to verbalize.

Instead, he simply pulled you closer, arms tightening around your middle, squishing your body to his, breathing in the scent of your hair like it was some type of endangered flower that he may never get to sense again. 

It wasn’t until your hushes of “shh, shh, baby, it’s okay.” and your bony fingers attempting to wipe his tears that he even realized he’d been crying. 

“I hate Tony Stark.” he muttered, shifting to dry his tears on the top of your head, doing his best to kiss your forehead despite the current situation. You’d been together nearly 4 years now, and he’d never cried in front of you before.

“I know.” you murmured softly. “But you’re gonna hand his ass to him, aren’t you? That’s what you’ve been pouring your soul into lately, right?”

He sniffed, and then shifted again, to look down at you. You wore no smirk, your face showed no sense of irony. Just pure love and support and belief. “Yeah, of course.”

“You’re going to put all of them to shame.” you assured him, her voice soft, a small yawn getting out, before she added “Then the world will finally have to listen to you. And he’ll realize he should’ve listened to you all along.”

He tried not to smirk at the gasp she elicited as he shifted again, quickly, devouring your lips in kiss far too hungry to be called ‘chaste’ even in the broadest of terms. He loved getting that sort of reaction out of you, of course, but this was too heavy of a moment to ruin with a tease. “I’m so fucking lucky to have you, honey.”

“Are you going to remember that when you’re off rescuing all those fair damsel types?” you were joking, of course, but Quentin liked to think he knew you well enough to be able to read you. And there was sadness to your words in that moment that had a lump forming in his throat.

The funk he’d been in was so deep, had him so assured you were going to leave him. Until now, he hadn’t dared to think that the fear was mutual.

And then the thought came to him so quickly, he was voicing it before he even had a chance to register it “Every hero needs a love interest. I don’t suppose there’s any chance you’d be interested in some very public roleplay?”

Archie #702 sees Sandy Jarrell and Matt Herms pitch in for much of this issue as Betty and Veronica try to figure out who Archie’s seeing now. It goes about as well as you’d expect. Nick Spencer is still delivering some humorous dialogue and the opening sequence from Marguerite Sauvage is as beautiful as ever.

Archie 1941 #5 is pretty heavy, dealing with the the grief, remorse, and emotional devastation of loss experienced during the war. Peter Krause and Kelly Fitzpatrick’s artwork has been wonderful throughout this entire series and they nail the conclusion.

Avengers #14 sparks the fuse of the vampire civil war from Jason Aaron, David Marquez, Justin Ponsor, Erick Arciniega, and Cory Petit. There’s some really nice world-building going on here with the Legion of the Unliving and a rather interesting development with Ghost Rider.

Batman #64 begins “The Price” crossover with The Flash from Joshua Williamson, Guillem March, Tomeu Morey, and Steve Wands. Outside of the tie-ins throughout the DC titles, I haven’t been reading Heroes in Crisis, but this ties in as well, spotlighting some of the strain that Batman and the Flash have been under. Something definitely feels off about the situation.

BPRD: The Devil You Know #13 feels like shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic at this point, with all of the pieces moving into place, and we’re just awaiting the inevitable end of everything. Stunning artwork from Laurence Campbell and Dave Stewart.

Conan the Barbarian #3 maintains its high bar of excellence as the one-off stories building up Conan’s past continue from Jason Aaron, Mahmud Asrar, Matthew Wilson, and Travis Lanham. The art from Asrar and Wilson is just perfect.

The Curse of Brimstone #11 is the beginning of the end in the first of this two-part finale for the series from Justin Jordan, Denys Cowan, John Stanisci, Rain Beredo, and Wes Abbott. It’s great to see Cowan’s art here as he, Stanisci, and Beredo make the beginning of this final fight look absolutely gorgeous.

Daredevil #1 is a very impressive debut from Chip Zdarsky, Marco Checchetto, Sunny Gho, and Clayton Cowles. It picks up from Matt’s recovery in Man Without Fear and, well, things are messy, unfocused, and he’s having a hell of a time getting his feet under him again. But, beyond that, there’s a real depth to the story here. Though there’s a ton of action, it also goes deep into character building and flashbacks of Matt’s time as a kid getting morality lessons from his priest. This is damn good, taking cues from Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s “Born Again”, but it also feels influenced by Mike Grell’s “The Longbow Hunters”. There’s also a back-up written and illustrated by Zdarsky himself with an interpretation of how Daredevil “sees” and the digital edition gives a smattering of back-up material including covers, art comparisons, and sketches. I highly recommend this.

Deathstroke #40 concludes the “Arkham” arc with Slade killing Hugo Strange and then slaughtering a bunch of homeless men. Maybe. Depends on which truth you believe. In doing so, Priest sets up the seeds for the upcoming crossover with Teen Titans.

Die #3 peels back another layer of the onion of this world as Kieron Gillen, Stephanie Hans, and Clayton Cowles give us a story of how the various regions work. All through an allegory of war between Eternal Prussia and Little England, Tolkien re-adapted to a kind of explanation on his own allegory. It’s interesting, especially when coupled with the essay Gillen pens in the back that explains the whole construct. That said, it also works great as just an extremely pretty adventure where a party of adventurers fights a dragon. I’m loving what this series is doing.

Doctor Who: The Thirteenth Doctor #4 concludes the opening arc with the Hoarder from Jody Houser, Rachael Stott, Erica Eren Angiolini, Viviana Spinelli, Richard Starkings, Sarah Jacobs, and John Roshell. I still love the inventiveness and ornate quality to the Hoarder’s design.

The Empty Man #4 gives a bit more insight into the disease ravaging the planet, as more of the strange skittering monsters appear and the kids from the original mini-series return. Cullen Bunn, Jesús Hervás, Niko Guardia, and Ed Dukeshire are crafting something very dark and weird with this series, but also very, very good.

Female Furies #1 isn’t a bad start from Cecil Castellucci, Adrian Melo, Hi-Fi, and Carlos M. Mangual. I quite like Melo’s art here, as she’s adapted it somewhat to highlight influences from some Fourth World luminaries like Jack Kirby, Keith Giffen, and Walt Simonson.

The Freeze #3 delves deeper into the early days after the Freeze as the awakened look into the serial killings, and we get more mysteries in missing people (who may or may not be the same as those murdered) and the revelation that Ray is being manipulated. Really great work here from Dan Wickline, Phillip Sevy, and Troy Peteri.

GI Joe: Sierra Muerte #1 sees Michael Fiffe bring his kind of retro charm to the Joes in the beginning of this series. It’s actually played pretty straight and reminds me of the loving care that Tom Scioli also takes to these properties. Great art and a story that reminds me of the original GI Joe cartoon.

Giant Days #47 intertwines Daisy learning to drive, McGraw’s brother dropping in on him and Susan, and Esther taking care of an illicit adorable puppy. All the usual humour and character building you’d expect from John Allison, Max Sarin, Whitney Cogar, and Jim Campbell.

The Girl in the Bay #1 is an intriguing debut from JM DeMatteis, Corin Howell, James Devlin, and Clem Robins. It jumps headlong in to some of DeMatteis’ favourite themes and topics as spiritualism, reincarnation, and coming of age (particularly in Brooklyn) and presents a compelling world and mystery for the seemingly dead, then strangely awakened fifty years later Karen Sartori. Very nice artwork from Howell and Devlin.

The Green Lantern #4 may yet be the most beautiful issue to date, with Liam Sharp and Steve Oliff elevating the impossibly high bar of their artwork to an even greater level. The character designs, page layouts, panel transitions, and sheer storytelling in the artwork is incredible.

Gunhawks #1 is another of the revived title one-shots in celebration of Marvel’s 80th anniversary, this one a western from David & Maria Lapham, Luca Pizarri, Neeraj Menon, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Travis Lanham. It’s gritty, bloody, and the art from Pizarri, Menon, and Rosenberg is very impressive.

Immortal Hulk #13 concludes the descent into Hell in an issue that is probably as epic as the Avengers beatdown from #7. Al Ewing, Joe Bennett, Ruy José, Belardino Brabo, Rafael Fonteriz, Paul Mounts, and Cory Petit continue to deliver one of the best series on the stands today.

Justice League #17 follows on from the annual and the revelations in the “Escape from Hawkworld” arc in this single issue story of Martian Manhunter’s past from Scott Snyder, Jim Cheung, Mark Morales, Walden Wong, Tomeu Morey, and Tom Napolitano. Some fascinating developments in J’onn’s history here, with gorgeous artwork, and the funny truth that Batman’s really a concerned bat-dad.

Killmonger #4 wages a pitched battle with Die #3 and The Green Lantern #4 for most beautiful art in a comic this week. Juan Ferreyra’s work is stunning, giving the book depth, character, and an immense re-readability just to stare at the imagery again. There is a wonderful sequence of blood pooling up the page as the violence and body count increases and the design for the cat goddess is gorgeous. As to that latter, Egypt isn’t for want of multiple cat deities and, though Sekhmet is probably the easy answer, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the older and somewhat lesser known Mafdet. Bryan Hill, Ferreyra, and Joe Sabino continue to deliver one hell of a solid story with this series.

Oberon #1 is off to a fantastic start with this tale from Ryan Parrott, Miloš Slavković, and Charles Pritchett. It strikes a nice balance between fantasy and the mundane as Bonnie finds out she, and the world, aren’t exactly what she thought. Gorgeous artwork from Slavković.

Old Man Quill #1 kicks off a Guardians tale set in the “Old Man” universe from Ethan Sacks, Robert Gill, Andres Mossa, and Joe Caramagna. I liked the recently concluded Sacks-penned Old Man Hawkeye series as well and Star-Lord appears to be taking on that same kind of beaten-down sardonicism of Clint.

Prodigy #3 sees Crane and Agent Straks racing across the globe to find out information on the cult aiding the alternate dimension insurgents. The artwork from Rafael Albuquerque and Marcelo Maiolo continues to be the main attraction, delivering some amazing action sequences.

Self/Made #3 gives us another twist as Rebecca and Amala attempt to take down Bryce for control of Amala’s code. This story continues to evolve in some very interesting ways, while including some of the toxicity inherent in some game development studios, with some beautiful artwork from Eduardo Ferigato and Marcelo Costa.

Shadow Roads #6 returns with Brian Hurtt stepping in for the line art and it’s great to see him back illustrating within the Sixth Gun world. Really nice, weird designs for the Bone Plains and interesting hints as to what’s next for the new/old threats seeping back into the world.

Star Wars: Age of Republic - Anakin Skywalker #1 spotlights a moral quandary for Anakin from Jody Houser, Cory Smith, Wilton Santos, Walden Wong, Java Tartaglia, and Travis Lanham. It’s still interesting to see Anakin as “General Skywalker” during the Clone Wars and how different he was from what he’d become.

These Savage Shores #3 is almost a perfect comic, actually it may well be a perfect comic. The craft and care that goes into creating this work is astounding. Ram V, Sumit Kumar, Vittorio Astone, and Aditya Bidikar are elevating the art form each issue. With the compelling intertwining of history and horror. With the epistolary narrative approach perfectly befitting the vampire sub-genre. With the attention to detail in how dialogue and narration are presented visually. With the variations on the 9-panel grid to guide pacing and keep the reader visually interested. With the consideration of the colour washes and tones to amplify the mood and atmosphere of the tale. This series is incredible.

United States vs. Murder Inc. #6 is kind of a weird conclusion to this series as the larger plot of the predicament the families currently find themselves in is left to the next series and, like last issue, we instead get more of Valentine’s family history. Great art, though, from Michael Avon Oeming and Taki Soma. The art really reminds me of some of Darwyn Cooke’s in his Parker adaptations.

Vindication #1 is an interesting crime drama from MD Marie, Carlos Miko, Dema Jr., Thiago Goncalves, and Troy Peteri. I love the shades of grey and uncertainty in motivation and truth in this story.

Wasted Space #6 returns with all the humour, violence, and madness that Michael Moreci, Hayden Sherman, Jason Wordie, and Jim Campbell brought to the first arc. I love Sherman’s designs for the gods, they remind me a lot of Ted McKeever’s work.

The Wrong Earth #6 ends season one of the series with Dragonfly and Dragonflyman adapting somewhat each to their new Earths, showing a bit of equivocation of the characters as the environment changes them. This has been an interesting story from Tom Peyer, Jamal Igle, Juan Castro, Andy Troy, and Rob Steen and there’s ample threads to bring me back when the series resumes.

Young Justice #2 continues the adventure in Gemworld in the present, while we get a focus on Wonder Girl in the past. There’s something weird going on here with time and continuity that still feels like a story beat more than Brian Michael Bendis just playing fast and loose with what he wants. Great art from Patrick Gleason, Emanuela Lupacchino, Ray McCarthy, and Alejandro Sanchez.

This Gun for Hire, 1942 - ★★★½

After I Married a Witch (and Sullivan’s Travels longer ago), chasing down more Veronica Lake pictures planted high on my to-do list. At points I wondered if this had intentional nods to the former film, as Lake plays a singing stage magician here and there’s lines that could read like meta-gags about an actor’s popular role. But this pre-dates her Witch turn, so no. She does get to show off some actual sleight of hand though, and pretty credibly! A locked-down camera POV is a big ally in that of course, but it’s clear she actually put in some work on the closeup magic vs. relying totally on camera edits. Love it.

I’d slot this as a quasi-noir, more of a general crime drama/suspense thriller overall — think lesser Hitchcock — populated with a few noir types, chiefly the hitman played by Alan Ladd. He’s an interesting figure, a real hardcase with brief flashes of softer qualities, always believably posed as a man who might or might not pull the trigger on anyone or anything. Given the strictures of the Hayes Code, even more impressive that he’s allowed to be this nasty without being boxed in as a total cold-blooded villain (plenty of other contenders in this for Scummiest Guy).

Easy to see why the studio paired him with Lake three more times after this — he upstages a young Robert Preston for goodness sake, ol’ Trouble With A Capital T And That Rhymes With P himself, a walking charm golem! That dynamic makes the very end almost comic, with the movie meekly gesturing at Preston and Lake’s engagement as a clear obligation/afterthought. It knows the real sparks lie elsewhere.

Bonus half star for some genuine set-in-LA location shooting, especially in the chase sequence; thanks to Los Angeles Plays Itself, I’m a permanent sucker for that.

Resident Evil fans have a new way to listen to some of their favorite atmospheric music with two new vinyl releases.

Resident Evil CODE: Veronica X and Resident Evil 0 will each receive deluxe double vinyl albums with black and Limited Edition colored discs from Laced Records. The albums feature remastered audio and original artwork by Boris Moncel.

Nearly 20 years ago, the Capcom Sound Team, comprising composers Takeshi Miura, Hijiri Anze, and Sanae Kasahara for CODE: Veronica, updated the sound of tension and terror for the next generation, as the game introduced players to a fully 3D-rendered, gothic vision of the Resident Evil formula. This vinyl release features music from the game’s 2001 updated multi-platform release.

Arriving hot on the heels of the GameCube remake of Resident Evil, prequel Resident Evil 0 enjoyed the same high production values, with incredibly detailed animated background, masterful sound design, and a chilling score by Seiko Kobuchi.

Each soundtrack has been remastered specifically for these releases, and will be pressed onto audiophile-quality, 180g heavyweight vinyl LPs housed in striking gatefold sleeves. Both soundtracks come are available as a Standard Edition (traditional black discs) and Limited Edition (colored discs — exclusive to the Laced Records store.)

Both double vinyl sets are available to pre-order via http://www.lacedrecords.com ( lacedrecords.co outside of the USA) and will ship in January 2020. Each product is GBP £33 / USD $35.

Laced Records has also released the OSTs of the first two Resident Evils on vinyl.
