LGBTQ 2019

So these past couple weeks I’ve met with people surrounding LGBT subjects. I got to talk with the board president of my cities youth group and she mentioned becoming a mentor and seeing about finding other queer people of color to come talk to the kids and it really excited me. Took me back to when I was a middle/high school kid trying to understand myself and needing someone to openly talk to about all things LGBT but just having youtube to really turn to. I think it’s critical too that there are people in thee spaces for the young qpoc that look like them. I say all the time how discouraging it is to come into a space and be the only one. I feel it on a daily basis going to work, dont get me wrong its the most inclusive and welcoming place I have worked just very white washed where I am. I also met with my schools diversity director initially just about a STEM conference in WV we will be attending but then lead into me inquiring about any sort of LGBTQ groups on campus. She informed me there wasnt one but in previous years there had been a trans woman interested in starting one and that there is also faculty I could reach out to and meet with to get more info on starting a group. I have a meeting this upcoming Tuesday for that that I’m really excited for and need to get notes ready for as well. A point I made to the woman from the youth group was that I don’t know a lot of qpoc but in thinking after our meeting I know a lot more than I realized I just don’t reach out to many which I plan on changing to hopefully really have a broad spectrum of people that could come and meet with the kids bc representation is HUGE. Also once I meet with the faculty that supposed to give me info on possibly starting a LGBTQ group I’ll be reaching out to people I know who are apart of and organize a group w the other school in my city. I’m seeing all this possibility right at my finger tips and its so exciting but also a little scary bc it is a lot to take on and a lot of responsibility on top of everything I’m already doing but I know that this is all happening and presenting itself to me for a reason. This year truly is going to be awesome and amazing and I can’t wait to experience everything thats in store for me.
