Study sheds light on the origin of elasticity in glasses and gels
Glasses and gels are two different types of solid materials that are commonly used in a wide range of settings. Despite their markedly different compositions, these distinct materials share some similar properties, for instance, they exhibit rigidity without a translational order and a slow transformation over time. Researchers at the University of Tokyo recently set out to better understand the differences between glasses and gels, specifically focusing on their elastic properties. Their paper, published in Nature Physics, sheds light on the origin and evolution of elasticity in these two classes of amorphous solids. "Our research started by observing the unique mechanical changes in colloidal gels during aging," Hajime Tanaka, senior author of the paper, told Phys.org. "Although glasses and gels have similar characteristics as amorphous solids—like rigidity without order and slowing dynamics during aging—we found something unexpected.

Thomas Graham was born on December 21, 1805. A British chemist known for his pioneering work in dialysis and the diffusion of gases. He is regarded as one of the founders of colloid chemistry. He’s known for his studies on the behaviour of gases, which resulted in his formulation of two relationships, both since becoming known as “Graham’s Laws”, the first regarding gas diffusion, and the second regarding gas effusion. He also proposed the association theory which claimed that the substances such as cellulose or starch that we now know are polymers are composed from smaller molecules hold together by unknown forces.

This is starting to piss me off, so here's a friendly PSA: spreading fearmongering COVID misinformation is literally no better than spreading dismissive "the pandemic never happened" COVID misinformation. If you are reblogging or reposting unverified conspiratorial bullshit just because you think it sounds plausible, you are doing the same thing as your annoying relatives on Facebook who post nonsense "studies" claiming that COVID is just a cold. If you don't understand virology or immunology, and you can't be bothered to fact-check these things, stop fucking posting about them. You are doing more harm than good, especially when you encourage people to ignore CDC/WHO recommendations or take dangerous "alternative medicine."

Study enhances plasticity of spontaneous coagulation cast oxide ceramic green bodies
Spontaneous coagulation casting (SCC), a new type of colloidal forming process, has garnered significant attention since 2011 due to various advantages of a high bulk density and non-toxicity, as well as the ability to achieve dispersion and coagulation with very low additions (< 1 wt%) of copolymers of isobutylene and maleic anhydride (PIBM). Further research has revealed that the green bodies formed by this method are brittle, and the smaller the powder particle size used, the more brittle the green bodies are. This paper reports a study on the plasticity enhancement of oxide ceramic green bodies shaped by SCC. The team published their article in the Journal of Advanced Ceramics on May 21 2024.

Love how every month or so someone in my family tries to send me hot tips or fringe research about how to treat/cure fibromyalgia/bipolar/autism/etc as though I'm not already seeing actual relevant professionals and doing actual recommeded shit manage them and clearly the concept of chronic illness is medical propaganda and I'm just not TRYING hard enough to be 'healthy'

From the People’s CDC newsletter today:
“An effective multilayered approach to COVID prevention should include proven measures such as masking with high-quality respirators (N95s, KN96s, KF94s or better), improving indoor air quality with ventilation and filtration, physical distancing, getting the latest vaccines, and using COVID tests appropriately. Unproven methods should not be considered part of a multilayered approach. Topical nasal products such as sprays or ointments may seem tempting but are not proven to prevent COVID infections (none are FDA approved for COVID) and may have risks. For example, Vaseline and petrolatum-based ointments can cause pneumonia if applied to the inside of the nose, as they may be subsequently inhaled where they can damage the lungs. Over-the-counter antibiotic ointments are intended to protect from bacterial infection in minor skin wounds and should not be used inside the nose. Although early research on other uses has been publicized, given the risks of petrolatum-based ointments if used in the nose, it is important to wait for larger scale studies to understand both potential risks and benefits. Colloidal silver, sometimes touted in nasal spray form, is not proven to treat or prevent any medical condition and can cause permanent gray pigmentation of the skin as well as other serious side effects. Research studies shared in the news or on social media should not be used in place of medical advice from an individual healthcare provider you trust.”
Sharing with all the original hyperlinks because I’ve seen a lot of talk on social media about nasal sprays for covid and want to illuminate the discussion.
