Not all heroes wear capes, but Judge Seburinde sure is. In a dissenting opinion, Uganda’s Judge Julia Sebutinde highlighted the many flaws in the ruling of the International Court of Justice, putting the entire institution to shame. Judge Julia Sebutinde, born in Uganda, initially worked for the Ministry of Justice in Uganda. In 1990, she advanced her education with a Master’s degree from the University of Edinburgh.  After graduating in 1991, Julia worked for the Ministry of Commonwealth in the UK and then joined the Ministry of Justice in the Republic of Namibia before being appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Uganda in 1996. In this role, she led several high-profile corruption inquiries into government departments, including the Ugandan Police, the Uganda People’s Defence Force, and the Uganda Revenue Authority, earning significant recognition for her contributions to justice in Uganda. In 2005, Julia was seconded to the Special Court for Sierra Leone, established by the UN to prosecute violations of humanitarian law during the Sierra Leone civil war.  She served as the presiding judge in the landmark prosecution of Liberian President James Taylor, who was found guilty of aiding and abetting war crimes and crimes against humanity in 2012.  Her exemplary work in international justice earned her an honorary LLD from the University of Edinburgh in 2009. In 2011, Julia achieved a historic milestone by being elected to a judicial seat on the International Court of Justice, becoming the first African woman to serve on the court, where she continues to contribute to global justice. Doctor Margaret Thomson was born on August 20th 1902.

Born as Margaret Hunter in Leith, she went to Edinburgh Ladies College and then to the University of Edinburgh where she qualified as a doctor in 1926. Margaret married a rubber planter named Alexander Thomson and went to live on Carey Island is now

Margaret was working as a doctor in Singapore when the city fell to the Japanese army in February 1942. She tended to the wounded as they were the last of the evacuates by sea on the SS Kuala on 13th February 1942. The medical staff were ordered to evacuate despite having to leave wounded behind.

They took to lifeboats when the ship came under attack, but as there were only two lifeboats many staff and patients were in the water, where they were attacked by Japanese planes. Thomson had to swim and she was later pulled into a lifeboat. The lifeboats made it to Kabat Island and they then moved on to Senajang Island. She tended to the wounded and rowed the lifeboat despite a leg wound. They were using wood splints and washing wounds in sea water. She arranged evacuation of the wounded to Singkep Island and this in time included herself with a septic leg wound. Margaret went on to Sumatra where she was imprisoned in Japanese camps. The guards stole the Red Cross supplies and she saw her fellow inmates die.

Her husband had also been mistreated as a slave building the railways. They recovered in Edinburgh before returning to Malaya. However, due to the unrest in the country, they returned to Scotland and bought a farm. Thomson's husband died in 1971.

The BBC consulted Thomson for the television series Tenko which portrayed life in Japanese work camps. She did not like to talk about her experiences and she never watched the programmes.

Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa’s One Wall a Web is an exhibition that gathers together work from two discrete photographic series that he made in the United States: Our Present Invention (2012–2014) and All My Gone Life (2014–2016). Both the series and the exhibition draw their titles from the poetry of Muriel Rukeyser.

One Wall a Web not only explores the mutability of archival images, but the ongoing presence of history in the present day. According to Wolukau-Wanambwa, the exhibition attempts to address “the normalcy of fear, separateness and violence in a moment suffused by them, but also in a culture riven by the habitually limited prescriptions of images.” The exhibition comprises two distinct strands of photographs: the first, a series of appropriated archival 4 × 5 inch negatives; the second, a series of original photographs.

Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa is a photographer, writer, and editor of The Great Leap Sideways. He has a BA in Philosophy & French from Oxford University, UK and an MFA in Photography from Virginia Commonwealth University. He has contributed essays to catalogues and monographs by Vanessa Winship, George Georgiou, and Paul Graham. His photographic work addresses questions of patriarchy, race, history, and identity.

At the Male Supremacism Studies Conference, held by the Institute for Research on Male Supremacism (IRMS), some of the most extreme calls for censorship yet emerged from figures who see open digital discourse as a problem to be solved, not a value to protect.

Virginia Commonwealth University professor Dr. Kay Coghill and Patrick Hermansson, a senior researcher for the UK-based group Hope Not Hate, openly pushed for aggressive deplatforming as a means of silencing dissenting viewpoints, particularly those labeled as conservative or “supremacist.”

Dr. Karlyn Borysenko, an independent journalist and commentator, attended the conference to document what she describes as a deliberate effort to suppress opposing political views under the banner of “combating extremism.” What she observed was not a nuanced discussion about violence or threats, but rather an open endorsement of censorship as a political weapon.

If I’m honest, I’m kinda tired of hearing from Americans “oh, well we don’t learn about x country in our education system.”

Look, I’m from Canada, and I’m not going to sit here and pretend like Canadians are a particularly knowledgable bunch; I’d wager, in fact, that general ignorance on global affairs and history is a problem across the anglosphere, if not much of the west and within imperialist countries in general. And I’m also not gonna pretend that Canada is particularly hard done by in the current situation, we’re in a generally pretty privileged position when it comes to the current geopolitical order.

But I can also say that we are, as English speaking countries go, smaller in our population and influence, especially compared to the US and UK. Our culture, our media, our economy, is dominated by the US with the UK occasionally poking in. We don’t have a choice but to know about the US, to go along with your shit, to be aware of it, because everything that happens down south will eventually pull on us. Most of what I know about the US isn’t from school, it’s from the news, social media, movies and books, or interacting with Americans. Like of course we learned some stuff about the US in classes, but at least in my province, we didn’t learn about the American revolution or civil war in our curriculum, it’s just history we picked up outside of that.

I’m far from an expert on american electoral politics, but I know I know more about their system, than they do ours. I know that if I say “my province voted blue” Americans assume that’s Canadian democrats despite many countries outside of the US (at least many commonwealth nations anyway) using blue for cons and red for libs. And it’s not like they respond neutrally, they often immediately plant their politics and context over ours and I have to explain before someone gets mad about something. And then they tell me about how in the states the reds are cons and the blues are libs, like I don’t know, like their politics and opinions aren’t shoved down my throat all the time.

Americans often assume our culture and country to just be theirs, but generally more liberal, and with universal healthcare. And like, I don’t think we’re radically different, but we are different. Religion doesn’t play the same role in our politics, we don’t have the same history with puritanism or evangelism, nor do we have the mega churches of the states. Our conceptions of multiculturalism is different; it’s an official policy here, and before we were still a country that saw itself as being at least french and english, and related ourselves to other countries. Our political system is different, our diasporas are different, our regionalisms are different, our history and issues are different. Of course there’s overlap, but we are different. Just because we know american culture and references, doesn’t mean we’re the same. You guys just frequently refuse to learn ours beyond us saying toque and eh.

That was a long ramble to say that while I did learn some about other countries in our education system, maybe more than those in the states, most of what I know is either from interacting with other cultures, or having some basic curiosity in other parts of the world. I’d wager that’s how it is in most places, because there’s only so much schools can really teach on their own. Maybe there’s a cultural difference in American isolationism and whatever you want to call what Canada has. It’s not like we’re unignorant, far from it.

Did you write in English (is it your first language or second?) and did you query as a citizen of a country that is not the UK, US, Canada or Australia? I would be interested in knowing Everything but if none of this applies. Then sorry for assuming.

So yup, English is technically my third language and I grew up mostly in a German speaking environment and went to German schools hence Abiball haha, but I've had quite a lot of exposure to English since I was young plus moved to the UK for university :)

I do exclusively write in English, and amusingly I actually write rather badly in German, in creative writing terms, as my degrees were all in UK unis. Plus my subject matter is more geared towards the Anglophone market, although my first book currently has a first translation rights deal for German as well.

Re: querying, I exclusively queried in the UK as a non-citizen resident. Agents in the UK are generally happy for EU/Commonwealth citizens to query — this may be different by genre, but with literary fiction everyone I queried was fine with me technically being a foreign national, especially as book was geared towards the English speaking market :)

It's interesting watching YouTube reactions to Heartstopper and Young Royals. Non- UK/Commonwealth and Scandinavian reactors seem to think the kids are older than they are because they haven't understood the school systems. Heartstopper season three ends with Nick at 17, and Charlie just turned 16. Young Royals season three ends with Wilhelm just turned 17, and Simon is still 16. Just because we've watched three seasons of the show over three years, it doesn't mean that the characters have aged up two years. We've known the characters for longer than they've known each other. They also have more school beyond the three seasons to attend.

Many reactors want to see them go to University, but it's a teenage show about teenagers in their high school years. It's a slice of life START of the growth of these kids. They aren't fully formed, learned-from-their-mistakes, everything's-perfect at the end of these shows, and if the shows are going for realism, they shouldn't be. Too many teenagers leave school thinking that they should know everything about how to be full, well-rounded adults by that time. In fact, they're just learning some grown-up concepts about the world and their own place in it for the first time. It takes a while of making the same mistakes again and again before lessons are learned and we grow. The end of these shows is a beginning.

Give yourselves and these teenagers reflecting back at us some grace.

The australian version of ghosts theyre making makes me mad . The characters are so dumb compared to the UK and US versions of the characters, except for joon who tbh is the only one who feels like he should be an australian ghosts character. Ive only watched the US ghosts but from what ive seen of the UK ghosts its similar in that . The ghosts are fairly unique to their countries. in the US ghosts there is a viking, a pre-colonial (flirting with colonial) era Lenape character, a US revolutionary war officer, a gilded age housewife to a robber baron, an Afroamerican jazz singer who dated a bootlegger, a free love lives-on-a-commune hippie, a 1980s scout leader, and a finance bro douche. Thorfinn, Isaac, Hetty, Pete, and Trevor are all adapted from the UK show (Thorfinn=Robin, Isaac=The Captain, Hetty=Fanny, Pete=Pat, Trevor=Julian) and the rest of the characters were replacements of others in the UK version. But like heres the thing and idk if I'll explain it good. The US ghosts wanted to closely adapt the UK ghosts, so they had some very similar characters, BUT the UK ghosts are very distinct to the UK. You can't just have the same characters and put them in the US and call it a day, because UK history is not the same as US history. Plot twist. You can't have a UK ww2 officer in US ghosts because British ww2 history is very different to American ww2 history, so you adapt him into a Revolutionary War officer. You can't have a UK caveman in US ghosts because . well it'd be racist to depict a precolonial native american from ~5000 years ago as a primitive being. and also it doesn't fit in US history . the US doesn't have its caveman era of human history the same way the UK does. So the caveman is adapted into a viking. And on that note a pre-colonial Lenape character would not be in place in the UK ghosts because the UK doesn't have a Native American history in the way the US does. Alberta couldn't have been from the UK ghosts, she's a very US history-based character. A 90s Tory MP disgraced in a sex-scandal is a very UK character and I may be wrong but that is the kind of character that couldn't really be from anywhere but the UK. These are characters that reflect their country's histories and you can't just. Have the same characters in a different country.

The Australian ghosts seems to be doing the opposite? The ghosts don't seem to be distinctly Australian for the most part, except for the Chinese gold-rush miner and maybe the Irish potato famine immigrant. An 80s aerobics instructor? Could be any country's history. A betrothed edwardian socialite? Could be any commonwealth country's history. A motorbike gang member? I may be off base but thats fairly universal.

And it's not like Australia doesn't have a unique history!! There are characters you can make that are very Australian. Tbh Joon shows that it's not like. Impossible (I'd keep him in my cast of characters even though the Asian gold-rush miner isn't unique to Australian history (see: Aotearoa, USA), but I do think an Asian gold-rush immigrant isn't the most basic ass generic 19th century character and is like. A part of australian history). What about a pre-colonial Aboriginal character, or an Aboriginal character who was affected by the stolen generations? What about an escaped convict turned bushranger who got in a gunfight and died or something? What about an ANZAC soldier who like. survived ww1 but died of a heart attack at an ANZAC parade a decade after, in uniform and everything? What about a post ww2 Greek immigrant who did manual labour to make a living (my personal idea is make her a lesbian but anything could work)? What about an aussie rules football player?

Like. I would be so interested in that version of ghosts Australia. It would feel like a distinctly Australian show, not one that could've been made in any former British colony. I may be wrong but idk . I feel like the characters they made are really generic and could have been from anywhere

A popular Nigerian adage says “the cow never knows the value of its tail until it is chopped off”. In many tragic ways, this speaks to today’s Britain. From EU membership, to competent leadership, to low inflation, it seems necessary for Britain to lose things to appreciate their importance.

This week, look at Prince Harry and Meghan being feted in Jamaica. See the soft-power skills they carry with them, and think about that Nigerian adage.

In much of the British media, Harry and Meghan are all-year panto villains. But around the world, they could not be more loved – often for the very reasons they are despised in the British media. They are the soft power we could have enjoyed with the increasingly dominant, increasingly self-confident non-white world, especially the Commonwealth.

It’s not just that they are royals. Prince William and Kate headed to “no problem” Jamaica in 2022, and encountered problems aplenty. As their PR fiasco unfolded, they were derided for shaking hands with Jamaican children through wire fences, and for motoring viceroy-style through crowded streets in a fancy Land Rover. At the nightmare’s end, Jamaica basically handed Britain its P45, informing the royals of its intention to be a republic, to “move on”.

Still, Harry has something the royals he left behind and the likes of Chillax Cameron can never have. He has familiarity, an ease with difference – and he has Meghan.

In 2012, he also had the love of the UK press and public. He was praised for his warm embrace of the then Jamaican PM, Portia Simpson-Miller, and was photographed larking about with Usain Bolt. “He has shown himself to be a natural ambassador, a diplomat in a very real sense – one hug from him has (at least partly) dissipated the bad feeling of generations … It is inconceivable that any other royal could have pulled this off quite so effectively,” gushed the Mail on Sunday.

But that was then, before the British media’s own version of Orwell’s “two minutes hate” became a thing. Now, much of the press sees Harry and Meghan glad-handing and being glad-handed in Jamaica, surfing the love at the premiere of the Bob Marley biopic, and they don’t much like it. “Meghan and Harry pose next to anti-royal Jamaican prime minister who wants to ditch the monarchy and warned Wills and Kate they’ll never be king and queen of his nation – as Charles undergoes prostate surgery and the Princess of Wales recovers in hospital,” thundered the Mail. “The hubris of Harry and Meghan’s Jamaican photoshoot,” snorted the Spectator. “Crown fools: ‘Provocative’ Harry & Meghan spark royal row as they meet Jamaican politicians plotting to oust Charles as head of state,” jeered the Sun.

Britain understood Harry’s value and soft power in 2012, so what changed? Answer: Harry fell in love with, and married, a Black woman. That could have been a boon for this country, here and abroad; instead it’s a might-have-been. And what might have been to our reputational benefit is what has been happening in Jamaica.

The UK headlines and sour grapes tell you one thing: we messed up and we know it. Meghan was, and remains, soft-power dynamite, and all we have now is the soft-power kryptonite of Wills and Kate and the Windsor “firm” that spurned her. Still, that’s us: we never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

The Royal House of Windsor: “The Big Three”

Prince George, Duke of Newsoms

Prince George Martin, third child and second son of King Albert I and Queen Isabella, was born on 14 Sep 1816 at Windsor Castle.

Albert I decided that his second son would pursue an army career and had him gazetted colonel in 1823. From 1824 to 1831, Prince George lived in Brindleton Bay, where he studied (along with his younger brother, Prince Edward) at the University of Hössimgen.

He was appointed colonel of the 2nd Horse Grenada Guards in 1835, promoted to major-general four months later, lieutenant general in 1837, and appointed colonel of the Coldsim Guards in 1837.

Upon his marriage to Lady Marianna "Nina" of Kently on 23 November 1840, he was created Duke of Newsoms and Earl of Burchette and became a member of the Privy Council. Nina was the third child and only daughter of the 2nd Viscount Kently.

Kently Palace, a set of 5 residences united into one as apartments, was purchased by the Duke of Newsoms in 1839 and named after Lady Nina. Since 1840, it has been home to many senior and junior members of the Windenburg Royal Family.

George and Nina resided in Apartment 1 at Kently Palace until their deaths. They had one child in 1848, a daughter, Princess Grace Marianna of Newsoms. Princess Grace would go on to marry Burchette Gates Sr, inventor of the airplane, and the sim who would later help Edward I usher in air imports and exports to Windenburg.

In 1841, George was promoted to full general by his brother, Albert II. That year, he was sent to the Isle of Sims in command of the Windenburg contingent of his brother's army destined for the invasion of Sulani. George and his command fought in the Isle of Sims campaign under extremely trying conditions. He won several notable engagements, such as the Siege of Mua Pel'am in July 1842, but was defeated at the Battle of Kaanapasim in September 1842.

After his return to Windenburg, his brother promoted him to the rank of field marshal and then in 1844, appointed him Commander-in-Chief (the professional head of the Windenburg Army). George's military setbacks became noticeable given his lack of experience as a field commander, the poor state of the Windenburg army at the time, and the conflicting military objectives of the protagonists. George resigned as Commander-in-Chief in 1850.

Having just turned 34, the prince turned his attention to horses.

As Duke of Newsoms, George was a passionate supporter of equestrian sports and created the FEI (International Equestrian Federation) in 1856.

George was known for his love of polo. He played the sport as a teen, and continued to enjoy it as an adult. His polo playing was a documented part of his life, both as a royal and as a public figure.

George famously played polo for the 1851 Lords vs. Commons. He also became a world-class Driving athlete who won World Championship gold in 1857 for Windenburg.

In 1858 George established the Easton Racecourse, in Balsimore for thoroughbred horse racing - with Royal Ascot becoming the centerpiece of the Windenburg summer social calendar.

His royal title, popularity and celebrity brought a massive spotlight to equestrian sports in the UK, then in all the other countries of the Commonwealth and the rest of the sims world.

Today, the administration of the Racecourse is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the Monarch. Easton Racecourse is visited by approximately 400,000 sims a year, accounting for 9% of all UK racegoers. The racecourse covers 152 acres leased from the Crown Estate, and enjoys close association with the Windenburg Royal Family. It is about 6 miles from Buckingsim Palace, and 12 miles from Windsor Castle.

George became perpetually in debt because of his excessive gambling on cards and racehorses. In 1864, his sister Catherine, Princess Royal paid his §12,000 gambling debt (equivalent of §186,000 today) after the duke's life was threatened.

His Royal Highness died of apparent cardiovascular disease on 3 Mar 1870. After lying in state at Westsimster Abbey, George's remains were interred in the abbey, following his funeral there.

The Duke of Newsoms' descendants went on to become inventors, archeologists, and software developers. His great-great-grandson is Will Gates, a Windenburg business magnate, software developer, investor, and philanthropist. Gates is the founder of Microsims Corporation, the largest tech company in the sims world with an estimated net worth of §531 million.
