On April fools day, these guys @rustbeltriders tried to convince us that their work was done...that climate change and food waste had been addressed and so on and so on...we threatened to chain ourselves to their gate. Love these guys... they do such great work in the world and they do it so well. I believe in back yard composting, but community composting just makes so much practical sense. We pay for our membership and drop off the compost which we store in @bio.bags in our freezer til we accumulate enough of it. It’s a perfect system if you can’t backyard compost easily, which we can’t in Cleveland Heights because there are so many rats because so much sewer , water and gas line work is being done. Besides, Why work like hell to do something when you can simply pay someone else a nominal price to do it better. COMPOSTING IS NO ROCKET SCIENCE

Just like sight and sound, how I wish internet also transmitted aroma/fragrance!

What I am experiencing right now is petrichor emanating from my composter. It's that fragrance which no top-of-the-line perfumery can imitate, far less beat.

The best part is this petrichor was conjured up by unwanted rejects. Not some carefully put together aromatic herbs or chemicals.

Got my drift? 😊❤️

Specific Challenge - Community Composting

One of my tasks, which was considered my background task, was to create a report/literature review about Community Composting. 

Community Composting, simply put, is when the community composts collectively in a community garden, park or apartment block mostly due to lack of space, as some people who live closer to the city have no garden of their own. 

The report had to cover barriers that the community is likely to encounter, when establishing a community compost hub and is supposed to serve as guidance when initiating a community compost project. 

As part of the lit. review I researched the internet for similar projects in Victoria or Australia and found that community composting is relatively new to Australia. Only a few councils in Victoria have trialed Community Composting and some were unsuccessful and had to be removed due to lack of management or pest outbreaks. I was surprised to find out how advanced the UK was, already having legislation and regulations in place that incorporate the set up of community composting. 

Due to the lack of information online, I had to contact local councils and Environmental Authorities to get the information I needed. This was easier said then done! It was incredibly hard to reach the right people who could give me any advice, sometimes it took more than a week to hear back from them. While I was busy with my other internship tasks, it was easy to forget my 'background task', especially when I felt I was unsuccessful in receiving enough information from the authorities. 

Due to few councils, I have been lucky enough to receive a valuable evaluation report and guidelines for the setup of Community Composting Hubs in NSW. Even though this was a different state, the information was very helpful.

Through persistence and many many phone calls, I have been able to receive most of the information I needed to complete the report. 

It is currently under review, but I am excited to see it being part of the official Food Know How Program Report, that is due when the program is coming to an end in June 2014.

COMPOSTING TRAINING FOR MY MAID RAKHI

I have come across multiple instances during my workshops in apartments/gated communities and public meetings over the last 10 years with people complaining that their maids and cooks do not co-operate when it comes to solid waste management (SWM). Especially composting.

That happens when YOU are not serious about SWM/composting but want to dump the task on them thinking that they should do it just like they sweep the floor or wash the dishes.

But SWM/composting is not part of their traditional job profile! They will not do it unless YOU show interest in it. Get serious about it and get your hands dirty. Your waste is your responsibility. But when you are away, you need someone else to fill in. That’s why it’s important that everyone at home is on the same page.

Let’s get there ASAP. Shall we?
