CONTROVERSY: Did From Software Use CGI in Shadow of the Erdtree?
FIJMU News 5-23-24 by Scrute Schroedinger
With the new trailer for Elden Ring's upcoming DLC, sharp eyed viewers think they may have caught From Software in the act of using computer generated imagery.

According to Computer Graphics expert Khan Putretsper, "I've seen quite a few pixels in my day and I'm certain the trailer contains at least three. This may not have been shot on film, it may not even have any live action footage in it whatsoever."
With recent controversies over Disney using AI in their films, novelists using ChatGPT writing in their stories, and even certain celebrities such as Hatsune Miku using autotune and pitch-shifting technology to change their voices, From Software is the latest to face accusations right as their new work is released.
Computer Generated Imagery or "CGI" was first used in the film "Tron," which lost its special effects nomination for such a cheat. Still, CGI has been used on films such as James Cameron's "Avatar," M. Night Shyamalan's film "The Last Airbender," and Netflix's series "Avatar: The Last Airbender." Now From Software will have to face the scrutiny of its audiences. According to gamer and watchdog group founder Luigi Samus Zeldasen, "I'd hate to see a game like Elden Ring stoop use a computer for its imagery, but I've seen the new trailer myself, and I don't think that tower of ten thousand skinned bodies is real."
Troubling words indeed.

LONDON (AP) — A British man who used artificial intelligence to create images of child abuse was sent to prison for 18 years on Monday.
The court sentenced Hugh Nelson, 27, after he pleaded guilty to a number of sexual offenses including making and distributing indecent images of children and distributing “indecent pseudo photographs of children.” He also admitted to encouraging the rape of a child.
Nelson took commissions from people in online chatrooms for custom explicit images of children being harmed both sexually and physically.
Police in Manchester, in northern England, said he used AI software from a U.S. company, Daz 3D, that has an “AI function” to generate images that he both sold to online buyers and gave away for free. The police force said it was a landmark case for its online child abuse investigation team.
The company said the licensing agreement for its Daz Studio 3D rendering software prohibits its use for creating images that "violate child pornography or child sexual exploitation laws, or are otherwise harmful to minors."
“We condemn the misuse of any software, including ours, for such purposes, and we are committed to continuously improving our ability to prevent it,” Daz 3D said in a statement, adding that its policy is to assist law enforcement “as needed.”
Bolton Crown Court, near Manchester, heard that Nelson, who has a master's degree in graphics, also used images of real children for some of his computer-generated artwork.
Judge Martin Walsh said it was impossible to determine whether a child was sexually abused as a result of his images but Nelson intended to encourage others to commit child rape and had “no idea” how his images would be used.
Nelson, who had no previous convictions, was arrested last year. He told police he had met like-minded people on the internet and eventually began to create images for sale.
Prosecutor Jeanette Smith said outside court that it was “extremely disturbing” that Nelson was able to “take normal photographs of children and, using AI tools and a computer program, transform them and create images of the most depraved nature to sell and share online.”
Prosecutors have said the case stemmed from an investigation into AI and child sexual exploitation while police said it presented a test of existing legislation because using computer programs the way Nelson did is so new that it isn’t specifically mentioned in current U.K. law.
The case mirrors similar efforts by U.S. law enforcement to crack down on a troubling spread of child sexual abuse imagery created through artificial intelligence technology — from manipulated photos of real children to graphic depictions of computer-generated kids. The Justice Department recently brought what’s believed to be the first federal case involving purely AI-generated imagery — meaning the children depicted are not real but virtual.

it feels very weird to me how like 2 or 3 years ago we had the strong covid-era "trust the science, get vaxxed" stance amongst leftist and even just vaguely liberal groups, only now for distrust of AI imagery and large language learning models to allow a kind of anti-intellectual ignorance against new technologies in general to seep into ostensibly leftist spaces.
hence, we're in danger of fostering a generation that is repulsed by sufficiently advanced computer software that cannot actually articulate why they are convinced such technology is immoral and, thus, cannot accurately differentiate actual ethical, work-reducing uses of machine learning and similar data technologies from the work of grifters, plagiarists, and data thieves

Video Game Enthusiasts Lament that the Best Game of the Year Is Essentially Softcore Fetish Pornography

"I mean, fuck's sake," says Derek "CuntBlaster97" Przybelski, a "gamer" from Salt Lake City speaking to Facts! News. "So many games came out in 2024. A new Tekken, a new Dragon Age, a Final Fantasy 7 remaster... and basically the only games worth playing are two goddamned co-op shooters, something that looks like what my solitaire-addicted grandma would get peer pressured into trying in an alley, and this fucking shit," gesturing to the 8-foot-tall F-cup goat person depicted on his computer's monitor. He proceeded to "run" a "dungeon," frowning and muttering angrily while having the most fun he's had since he was a child.
"It's basically fucked," says another video-gamer who wished to remain anonymous. "Like, this is the only actual good game that's released since September," referring to Saber Interactive's Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. "I can't play that one though or I'll get banned from my girlfriend's Discord server for being a chud. But, like, fuck's sake, I can't play this one either. What if my parents see this?," gesturing to his "gaming avatar", a two-foot tall, 200-pound opossum woman which nobody over the age of 30 would be able to recognize as sexualized. "I have Steam Family Share with my little brother. If he sees this in his library I'm fucked... it's probably the only thing I'm gonna play for the next month though, at least until the next Abiotic Factor update."
"Atlyss is part of a larger trend," according to Vanessa Dobbins, a researcher at the University of Waterloo's Games Institute. "In the 90s with the advent of the M-rated video game, there was mostly a clear deliniation between good games, which were wholesome, and what we in the field call 'slop,' which was edgy and sexual -- which at the time meant anorexic women in leather. World of Warcraft by Blizzard Entertainment, being a good game yet edgy and sexual, was an outlier that caused changes in the behavior of Homo stupidens, the common video game developer. Now good games tried to become sexual in imitation of Warcraft, whereas slop games rejected sexuality in an attempt to seem superior to it. With Japanese gaming falling victim to anime in the mid 2000s, however, good games mostly became the territory of Homo stupidens basementii. This subspecies generally does not begin seeking a mate until relatively later in their life cycle, resulting in a shift in sexual games from the likes of Bayonetta towards more abstract sexual imagery, like the black slime from Changed, or in this case, ass-cheeks wobbling so hard that they should rip off."
An inside source at Unity Technologies, Inc., owners of the "Unity" video-game software which was used to create Atylss, told Facts! News that they are working hard with Microsoft Corporation and Sony Group to do as much as they can to prevent further good games from being released in the future. "This one slipped through the cracks, but we are working night and day to make sure this sort of thing doesn't happen again."

"AI art is immoral because it pulls from the works of other artists without their consent!"
Ah, so fanart is also immoral? And fanfic? Parodies? Collages? AMVs?
"AI art is immoral because you're taking work and money away from artists!"
Is driving your own car or bike, or even walking, immoral because you're taking work and money away from cab drivers? Is sending an email immoral because you're taking money away from the postal service? Is heating up a frozen pizza at home immoral because you're taking work and money away from the pizza delivery service? Was the invention of video game consoles immoral because it took clientele away from arcades? Is using an accounting software immoral because you might as well pay an accountant to do your taxes?
Listen, I'm not even a big fan of AI art, and I'd rather commission a real human being over trying to perfectly formulate a prompt and still getting something, well, artificial looking out of it, but those two arguments in particular make no sense! Why is using someone's intellectual property okay if a person does it, but bad if a computer does it? If we were to legally forbid generative AI models from using other people's work without their consent, what would your argument be for why we shouldn't expand that to human artists using other people's work as well? Why does Fair Use count for humans but not machines? I'm not even trying to defend AI generated imagery here, I'm asking questions you should have an answer to if you're trying to argue from a moral and especially a legal standpoint.

Super Famicom - Wizardry V - Heart of the Maelstrom
Title: Wizardry V - Heart of the Maelstrom / ウィザードリィV 災渦の中心
Developer: Sir-Tech Software / GAME STUDIO Inc.
Publisher: ASCII Corporation
Release date: 20 November 1992
Catalogue Code: SHVC-W5
Genre: RPG
Despite the greatest magic of the ancient High Sages, great floods, earthquakes, and famine again pervade the great land of Llylgamyn. The great orb of L'Kbreth, an artifact of remarkable power that has protected the city for generations, is powerless to halt the scourge.
The Sages have discovered that the hidden reason is deeper and more frightening than the worst of these disasters. To save the very world as we know it, you and your intrepid party must march headlong into the...Heart of the Maelstrom!
What SFC/SNES RPG could you play that isn't Final Fantasy, Super Mario RPG, or Chrono Trigger that I would recommend? It's Wizardry 5, easily. Published by Capcom in North America, and also released in 1995 as part of the Satellaview service in Japan, the graphical look of Wizardry 5 is very welcoming and much easier on the eyes than the earlier computer versions of the game. Menus in the castle are accompanied by a background picture, making them more interesting to look at. The dungeon walls have textures instead of Apple II-style vector grid lines, so you can see doors and corners from several squares away. Monster sprites are crisp and bright and the shadowy versions of them are a cool feature.
Adding to the game's atmosphere are orchestral-sounding music tracks that let you know where you are in the menus and how deep you are in the dungeons. These music tracks are composed by the late Kentaro Haneda (RIP 1949-2007) and as always, they sound fantastic. So fantastic are his contributions to the soundtrack to the Wizardry world that there are CD albums such as "We Love Wizardry" that contain Sonic Symphony-style orchestrations of the Famicom and SFC Wizardry soundtracks.
The gameplay is extremely faithful to the original versions of the game but with new praiseworthy changes. The control scheme caters well to the lack of a keyboard. You can comfortably press the D-pad to navigate smoothly and select the menu option you want. You no longer need to manually type the name of spells to cast them, you just select them from your spellcaster's battle menu. The pacing in combat is much faster but pay attention to your characters' health points so they don't die without your knowledge.
One major problem with the game, and this only applies to the US version, is that there isn't a proper method of saving your game such as a password or multiple save files on the RAM, which means you can't really correct any mistakes you make in the game, so you'll have no choice but to go along with your losses (works like that in real life). The Japanese version actually supports the ASCII Turbo File and Turbo File 2, which are both game save devices meant to connect to the Famicom. But wait, "How can you connect this to the Super Famicom?" That's what the Turbo File Adapter is for. With this Adapter, you can connect any of the Turbo File devices to the Super Famicom with ease. Also, the US version is censored to adhere to Nintendo America's strict guidelines regarding nudity, religious imagery, and whatnot. The Japanese version is uncensored, so you have text like "sexy woman with a tail" and so on.
The control scheme isn't perfect, because in some places it can make the game drag on a bit longer than you'd like. Pressing forward against a wall will make you bump into it, and you may accidentally repeat that when you meant to close the message box. You always need to remember that the action button opens unlocked doors and not the forward direction. And the down direction spins you around instead of going in reverse. If you practice you can get the hang of the way the controls work.
Overall, Wizardry V got the royal treatment with this Super Famicom port thanks to the wonderful folks at GAME STUDIO Inc. and ASCII. Every element in the game was made with care and attention. D&D and RPG fans are in for a treat, and even young adventurers will like this one. If you've got time to delve down and play a good long number of hours on your Super Famicom, you can never really go wrong with this fifth title in the series. A Nintendo Switch Online re-release would be desirable, so if you find this one, then your adventure has begun.

Hello, you said you are ok with oc questions, right? If so...
I'd love to know some of Aster's (all 3 of them) favorites, favorite animal to watch videos of or learn about, favorite type of game(plataformer, shooters, puzzle, rpg, etc) to watch, favorite memes if any, favorite computer program or website.
How would they react to sessitive content? (I'm in vet school and heavy imagery is on my screen nearly daily, so I wondered how they'd react
Does Urs have or would like to have any pets? Or plants.
If so do they show Aester pictures of them, via sending the pictures to themself and opening them on the computer? ( and yes I'm asking this becase Rigel asked to see my plants)
gosh that's a bit!! there's a lot to respond to in here (and sadly i don't have the brainpower right now to cover all of this) so i'll just put it under cut
okay so Rigel is fascinated with the natural world in general, despite not being able to interact it for real. he'll honestly enjoy learning of any animal, though he notably enjoys learning about the sheer variety of cat and dog breeds. he finds them cute in general, but the fact that it can be the same species and look completely different is definitely something that stands out to him. (i don't think he fully understands why there's so many yet don't tell him). then there's also bears, but that's more of a sentimental association. as for games, he leans into more simple, casual but fun games you'd find either in flash or shared around on usb sticks back in my childhood
Vega is generally more focused on the internal world of the OS and the machine hosting them. he does however see a bit of himself in felines and big cats. aesthetically enjoys wolves and bats as well. While Rigel can enjoy puzzles too, for Vega games are more enjoyable when he's able to analyze and take a while to think. as long as the processing power allows at least X').
Aldebaran isn't quite decided yet. it's a little difficult to talk about aldebaran's preferences given that he starts out as a more uneven mix of rigel and vega. initially he'd just tell you he likes what both rigel and vega enjoy, but i think once Things Happen and he gradually starts growing into his own person, he takes a liking to birds like peacocks, flamingos, and eagles. not sure about games yet
being software aster doesn't have the natural living being response to certain heavy imagery. i think logically they understand why humans tend to respond badly to this. or, at least they know what sensitive content Is, but it takes them a little bit to understand Why they're given that knowledge and what it does to a human.
software, memes, and websites is sadly where my brainpower on them runs out, so moving on to Urs!
Urs being a newly working young adult doesn't quite have the time or energy for pets. they have to make do with their small teddy bear collection <:).
i think pets aren't something on their mind at this point to begin with, so they wouldn't be able to tell you their preference either. all pets being traditionally kept as pets are quite cute, but they require work to take care of and have their needs met. they do feel a connection to bears (because of, well, his name), but not to the point of wanting one as a pet either!
same story with plants, but they do eventually get a simple succulent to take care of. (no surprise it's the bear paw one). Unlike the previous iteration of the project, the webcam isn't actually busted, so they just show it to Aster through the feed of the laptop!

[Video Description: A Tiktok from @/jeremyandrewdavis where Andrew - a white man - plays two roles in a conversation differentiated by a blue t-shirt and a pink t-shirt. The specific AI image generator used is Midjourney.
Blue, looking at cell phone: Can you believe this person is claiming AI is racist?
Pink, at a computer: It is.
Blue looks confused.
Pink: Ableist, too.
Blue: Prove it.
Pink, typing: Okay, let’s ask it to generate “an autistic person.”
Images of the results for - “an autistic person, lifelike, photorealism, photojournalism” - showing four white boys or men.
Blue: So?
Additional inputs for “an autistic person” showing four images of white boys or men each time with voice overs from Pink: And let’s do it again. And once more. And again. And then... And how bout...
Blue looks a bit confused as Pink asks: Are we starting to see a pattern?
Blue: You seem to think you’re proving something?
More inputs for “an autistic person” showing four images of white boys or men each time with voice overs from Pink: Here’s more. And more. And some more. And how about this. And another one.
“More” is repeated seven times with additional image inputs as Pink talks faster. Blue looks a bit shocked as Pink continues to say “More” eight more times.
Pink: Do you see any diversity? Say race, gender, age?
Blue looks like he suddenly gets it: Oh.
Blue continued: Plus, most were skinny, and weirdly enough, a disproportionate abundance of red hair. How many did you do until you found --?
Pink: I gave up after more than a hundred. Yeah. And the closer you look, you start to notice other trends.
Blue: Like?
Pink: Were any of them smiling?
Blue: It was all moody, melancholy, depressing. I noticed you used “lifelike”, “photoreal”, and “photojournalism” in your prompts. What...?
Pink: When I didn’t include those, I’d get puzzle pieces in everything.
Multiple inputs showing puzzle pieces incorporated into the images with Pink’s voice over: Some of these are cartoons. Others are - whatever this is.
Blue, grimacing: Ooh. So, AI is racist, sexist, ageist, and not only ableist, but uses harmful puzzle imagery from hate groups like Autism Speaks. Why?
Pink: The AI we have today is not artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence doesn’t exist yet. This is just machine learning. Now, here’s a bit of an oversimplification, but this machine learning focuses on patterns. It looks for the majority of similarities and then excludes outliers.
Blue: So if the data that it’s accessing is mostly, uh, young white boys in this case...
Pink: It will amplify that bias.
Blue: So are you saying that in order for AI to be an effective tool, you have to be smarter than than the AI?
Pink: Scary thought, huh? For someone who looking to confirm their biases or is unaware of their subconscious bias, it becomes the tool of the oppressor. I think plagiarism software - I mean machine learning - I mean AI has a lot of potential to do good, especially for the disabled population, but we must be aware of its limitations and pitfalls. And probably some government regulation is in order, at the very least to stop these companies from profiteering off of artists’ work without compensating those artists.
Output results from Midjourney with a voice over from Pink: In the 148 images I generated, Midjourney depicted “an austistic person” as being female presenting twice... As older than 30, five times... As white, 100% of the time. And zero were smiling.
/End of description.]
This is why it is so important to be critical and double check everything you generate using image generators and text-based AI.

The Evolution of VFX: From Practical Effects to Digital Mastery
The magic of movies has always relied on illusion. From the early days of cinema when filmmakers used camera tricks and practical props to simulate otherworldly events, to today’s seamless integration of computer-generated imagery (CGI), visual effects (VFX) have revolutionized how stories are told on screen.
What started as smoke, mirrors, and miniatures has evolved into digital landscapes, photorealistic creatures, and time-bending sequences powered by advanced software and creative ingenuity. This transformation has not only redefined the entertainment industry but also opened up exciting career opportunities for aspiring VFX artists. For those looking to enter this field, enrolling in professional programs such as VFX Film Making Courses in Udaipur or specialized VFX Prime Courses in Udaipur offers the training needed to thrive in this fast-paced, highly creative world.
The Early Days: Practical Effects and Analog Innovation
In the early 20th century, VFX relied entirely on practical techniques—effects created physically on set or in post-production using analog tools. Georges Méliès, a French illusionist and filmmaker, is often credited as the father of special effects. His 1902 film A Trip to the Moon used stop-motion, double exposure, and painted backgrounds to bring fantasy to life.
As cinema matured, Hollywood relied on miniatures, matte paintings, rear projection, and animatronics to produce large-scale illusions. Classics like Star Wars (1977) and Jurassic Park (1993) famously blended practical effects with early digital technology to create unforgettable cinematic moments.
The Digital Revolution: Rise of CGI
The late 1980s and early 1990s marked a turning point with the advent of digital VFX. The release of Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) and Jurassic Park showcased the potential of CGI—computer-generated imagery—as a powerful storytelling tool.
Instead of building physical models or elaborate sets, filmmakers could now create entire worlds digitally. Software like Autodesk Maya, Adobe After Effects, and Houdini became industry standards. This new digital era meant:
More creative freedom
Cost efficiency
Real-time editing and visualization
Hyper-realism and detail
Today, films like Avengers: Endgame, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Dune heavily rely on VFX to create immersive universes that blur the line between reality and imagination.
Key Milestones in VFX Evolution
Motion Capture (MoCap) – Used in The Lord of the Rings and Planet of the Apes to digitally animate characters using real actor movements.
Green Screen and Compositing – Allows backgrounds and environments to be added in post-production.
Digital Doubles – Creating digital versions of actors for stunts or aging/de-aging.
Virtual Production – As seen in The Mandalorian, where LED volumes and game engines like Unreal Engine render backgrounds in real time.
These techniques are now part of the curriculum in many modern VFX Prime Courses in Udaipur, ensuring students stay aligned with industry standards.
The Impact of VFX on Storytelling
Modern filmmakers are no longer limited by what can be built or filmed. VFX gives directors the ability to:
Create historical or futuristic settings
Show impossible action sequences
Visualize abstract concepts (like time travel or dreams)
Enhance realism in subtle ways (weather, lighting, textures)
This flexibility has democratized storytelling, allowing even low-budget filmmakers to compete visually with large productions—provided they have the right VFX skills.
VFX Career Opportunities and Why Training Matters
As the demand for VFX continues to grow—not just in films, but also in web series, commercials, games, and virtual reality—the need for trained professionals has skyrocketed. The global VFX industry is expected to exceed $23 billion by 2027.
A few popular roles in the VFX industry include:
Compositor
3D Animator
VFX Supervisor
Lighting and Rendering Artist
Roto and Paint Artist
Motion Graphics Designer
To succeed in these roles, aspiring artists need both creative vision and technical proficiency—something that quality VFX Film Making Courses in Udaipur offer through a hands-on, project-based approach.
Studying VFX in Udaipur: The Creative Advantage
Udaipur is rapidly emerging as a hub for digital arts education. With a blend of artistic heritage and modern infrastructure, the city offers a unique learning environment for students interested in VFX.
