What is this game?

It's 1807, England. The East India Company ship, Obra Dinn, assumed lost at sea, drifts into port. No hands remain on board, only the remains of several crewmen.

You are an agent of the company assigned to the task of inspecting the ship and trying to determine what happened to the ship and its crew and submit a report to your supervisor.

Your tools are a notebook, a crew manifest, images that were drawn on board, a magical pocket watch, and the ability to see the last moment of someone's life frozen in time.

The pocket watch becomes active when you approach a body. And you are transported to the moment of that person's death. Sometimes additional details are uncovered, and additional deaths are discovered.

As you uncover the mystery, you discover the fate of the cursed crew and with these tools, it is up to you to discover who everyone is and what happened to them.

The Game

The game is presented first person in a monochromatic, almost vector graphics style. Imagine that it is running in an 80s style computer and it gives you an idea how it looks. Most of the art and text are pixel-based as well.

As you uncover the story, faces are blurred until you should be able to determine who someone is. Once that happens, the picture becomes clear.

The story is presented in a non-chronological style. You start the game at the end of the story of the Obra Dinn. You see the captain being attacked by the remaining crew and then committing suicide. The rest of the game unfolds from there. As you discover events, they get filled into the Journal.

As you determine the fate (Who they are, Cause of Death and by Who/What) of 3 people correctly, the journal will lock in those events. As of the time of writing this summary, Matt has determined the fates of 24 of the 60 crew members.

The Journal

The journal is the most important interface in the game. It tracks each event, each death, disappearance, and movements of the crew between scenes. As you uncover events, it fills in. If you are missing pages, it can give you hints where to look for the missing scenes.

The Pocket Watch

This device allows you to enter the moments of people's deaths. It'll pop up near a body and open. The hands of the clock correlate to the time of death based on the chapters and scenes. The Hour hand points to the chapter in the journal of the death, and the minute hand to the scene.

Activating the watch allows you to enter the scene, usually with some dialogue preceding it. The first time the dialogue happens first, and you have a limited time in the scene to determine what happens.

The scenes are frozen in time at the moment of death. You can't interact with the scene, but sometimes there are additional details in the scene and additional bodies that can be discovered.

Sometimes the additional bodies move themselves out to the "now" moment so you can return to the scene later. Sometimes bodies are lost and can only be accessed through other scenes.

First Thing

Prioritize uncovering the story first and focus on determining the cause of death. Sometimes it is easy to uncover who someone is. A lot of the time, it's impossible early. Don't worry about uncovering identities as much as determining cause of death.

Officers are easy to determine; they have hats. The bigger the hat, the higher-ranking the officer. Stewards and midshipmen are people in nice clothes that don't wear hats. Top-men and riggers don't wear shirts. Sea-men are the ones who do.

Women and some members of a delegation are passengers.

Once you complete the story and have all the scenes unlocked, it will begin to rain. The boatman will say that a storm is coming, and at that point, the game assumes you have everything to solve the mystery. You can end the game at that point.

How to Plan a Book for Spontaneous Overthinkers - Planning/Writing Tools

Heads-up: This post is a long boi. So I'll start by saying that I am not a published author. However, I have been writing for as long as I can remember and in the past 5 years or so have started taking it much more seriously. After 3 failed Nanowrimo (National Novel Writing Month Challenge) attempts and countless others on my own time, I think I have figured out the best way for me to plan my stories in a way that gives me a set plan without causing me to overthink about planning so writing isn't boring. This first post is literally just on tools I like to use.

Planning Tools

Seeing as how writing is a creative art, a lot of it is left to opinion. So here are my tastes, opinions, and suggestions for writing tools.

Find a Writing Tool You Enjoy: For me this has historically been a typewriter, a fountain pen and a nice sturdy hardcover notebook, or a dip glass pen and ink with a faux weathered journal I got on amazon. For some you may just prefer typing it out on a computer or using a ballpoint pen and a notebook.

If you like typing stuff out on a computer... Google Docs and LibreOffice are my go-tos if you just want a standard writing experience. Google Docs is one you most likely know and lets you store everything in the cloud, but I've noticed it makes my computer run a little slowly and I've had saving issues on multiple occasions since it doesn't have a manual save feature. LibreOffice, on the other hand, is an open-source dupe for Microsoft Office that is completely free, has more features than Google Docs, and lets you manually save. Plus, you'll never have any issues with your Wi-Fi going out and not being able to access your files. If you like being able to do a mix of typing and handwriting, I recommend using OneNote. Despite it being a Microsoft app, it's free and cross-compatible with mobile devices and computers (you do have to manually sync your notebooks sometimes). However, if you use an art tablet with your computer or just a standard touch-screen tablet and a stylus, you can sketch, handwrite, and type all in the same document easily. I use OneNote for most of my planning.

If you like unique or old-fashioned writing tools... Glass or metal dip pens are a fun choice. You do have to do some personal research though based on how you want to write though. For example, I bought a glass dip pen because it had a little bit of a scratchier vibe that I enjoyed and was also better suited for writing in cursive and drawing little doodles when my brain needed a writing break. I got mine on amazon and the brand is called "Freedom of the Starry Sky" It came with a beautiful ink, a carrying case, and a little glass stand to rest the pen on. I don't have any specific recommendations for metal dip pens however. If you want an ink recommendation, however, I use and love the Windsor & Newton Black India Ink, which I got on amazon for about $7. It's great, and its water based so all you have to do to clean the residue off your pen is let it sit in some warm water for a minute and wipe it off.

If you want a typewriter... I am very autistic and typewriters are a special interest of mine so I'll try to keep this brief (spoiler alert, I failed). This isn't the cheapest option by a long shot but I love my typewriter with all my heart so I figured it should be included. Here's my tips: look on Ebay, Mercari, and Facebook Marketplace and try to find one in your budget that is at least mostly functional (my old girl is from the 40s and ribbon doesn't advance but I love her anyway). If you're going to be working at a desk, get a desktop model, but if you're like me and have no clue where you want to type, find one that is portable WITH CASE INCLUDED. Trust me you do not want to be looking for a typewriter case for a vintage typewriter online. Next, determine if you want/need a quieter model. Typewriters will never be silent, but some are made to muffle more noise than others. There is a YouTube channel called Jot and Tittle and they make demos of vintage typewriters where you can hear how loud they are and see how they are to work with. So if you find a specific model you're considering buying, make sure to check there to see if the keys are the right amount of clicky and the write amount of clacky for your needs. You'll also need to find ink ribbon, which you can easily find on ebay. If you have any questions or need to do/have a repair done, I recommend r/typewriters on reddit or finding a typewriter repair shop or other forum online.

Other Things I Recommend:

Random Generators: Whether it be for writing prompts, opening lines, names of any kind you can possibly think of, settings and locations, or really anything, I promise there is a random generator for you. For all things names (locations or people), I use Fantasy Name Generators, but anything you can think of has a generator online if you look.

Baby Name Websites: Sometimes you want a unique but realistic character name and you want to include the meaning or have the meaning of the name be an integral part of the story. If that's you, go to baby name websites. Most of them let you search by meaning or even pick a name you like (for example, a character whose name you like) and find similar names easily.

AI Story Generators: For the love of all that is holy, unholy, or right in the middle, do not publish or post anything written by AI and call it your own. However, if you can't decide how to write a scene or if you need a way to start the next chapter, or anything like that, use an AI generator and EDIT it afterwards. Most of these programs are subscription based or have a free trial or have a limited amount of generations per month, just so you know.

She looked like a tea leaf trying to comprehend the history of the East India Company. “How would working on that notebook change the outcome of my assignments?” In her mind, that video of clips from The Truman Show set to Celine Dion's "The Power of Love" would’ve gotten turned in regardless of whether or not she was working on the notebook. 

“Cornelia,” her mother said in a voice laced with concern. “You keep drifting off into this fantasyland because you’re avoiding something. Tell me about it.”

A genuine screw-up artist is someone sketchy by nature, has low intelligence, and is attracted to things that turn out to be scams.

“Every time you get caught by surprise, you panic,” her mom responded, “When you panic, you can’t think and then you make utterly stupid decisions! So why did you ignore all that work and do that notebook?”  

Cornelia tried to get the words out, but all that came out was, “Because…because….”

“Because what!?” her mother bellowed. 

“Because it’s frustrating!” she finally spat.

“What’s frustrating?” her mother pressed, determined to peel back the layers of her daughter's turmoil.

“It’s everything!” Cornelia said, the words tumbling out with a mix of anger and fear, “Everything at school is different now and it sucks!”

“Why?”

“It’s too much! It’s too hard!” Cornelia’s voice trembled.

Her mother exhaled slowly. The weight of the moment pressed down on them both. “OK, we need to get to the bottom of this. You aren’t giving me anything specific, so I’m going to dig around until I get my answers.”

Cornelia’s mother left the room. When she came back, she presented what first appeared to be a chintzy pendant shaped like a deranged cupcake with ten crazy eyes, pink lips, and pointed teeth on the table.

Cornelia looked at the weird cupcake necklace. “What’s this?” she asked.

“Tracking device,” her mother replied matter-of-factly.

Cornelia’s brow furrowed in disbelief. She picked up the ugly necklace and hefted it in her hand. “What?” she responded, “You gotta be kidding me.”

“You heard me.” her mother commanded, “Put it on.”

Cornelia’s eyes widened and she backed away in revulsion. “It’s butt ugly,” she said.

Nobody could believe what the tracking device picked up. She was indeed avoiding something she found frustrating. And not because it was a normal task that outstripped her tiny teenage frustration tolerance. 

The school decided to go paperless, and The kids in the art department couldn't adjust to it. The paperless system for art classes entailed using MS Paint or a similar program, and they had very little success drawing on MS Paint. Nearly all those kids had much more manual control drawing with a pencil and paper than I do with a trackpad/touchscreen or a computer mouse. Kids whose specialty was painting got hit the hardest by the transition from physical to digital media and failed very quickly.

The school didn’t understand that drawing on paper and drawing on MS Paint is not at all related. MS Paint is not meant to be digital paper. Comparing it to paper is like saying "I'm pretty good at chopping vegetables with a chef's knife, why not try some brain surgery." It is frustrating if you expect to just pick up MS Paint and be good. Digital art is still a whole new beast that you have to tame.

Everybody talks about what happened with the art department. But nobody talks about what happened with the math department. The paperless plan for the math department requires the students to complete assignments in SAS.

The school’s justification for using SAS hinged on the argument that the modelling output is much easier to interpret compared to the output from the comparable R package. While that’s true, it completely ignores all the problems with SAS.

⁠The skills you learn from SAS will not help you learn any different programming language. For example, when you call an R or Python function, you expect to supply some set of inputs and get an output. If you do this in SAS, they generally result in the macro crapping out a bunch of the intermediary steps into your directory and not being clear about what was achieved. This leads to some downright bizarre coding practices that severely limit how you think about problems. Beyond the SAS documentation, there is no presence on stack overflow or other platforms that can solve your problems in a matter of minutes. That last part is a particular problem because the setup for the student version is, to put it delicately, a bitch and a half.

It began when Cornelia attempted to install SAS with no luck. The setup instructions were poorly written and she got stuck in a gap.

Cornelia sat at her workstation in the computer lab, frustration etched on her face. She raised her hand, the gesture cutting through the din like a clarion call.

“Mrs. Kaur,” she said, her voice laced with urgency.

Mrs. Kaur turned her attention to Cornelia. “Yes?”

Cornelia pointed at the instructions spread before her, a maze of steps that seemed to taunt her. “Can you help me with this? There seems to be a step missing.”

Not wanting to do any more than the bare minimum of her job, Mrs. Kaur put on a fake smile and replied, “How about you ask one of your classmates before coming to me?” 

Jack set two seats away from Cornelia. He couldn’t help but overhear. He leaned over. “Are you stuck?” he asked.

Cornelia shook her head, but the defiance in her voice betrayed her. “You bet your ass I am.”

“Language, Cornelia,” Mrs. Kaur interjected without looking at the kids.

Unfazed, Jack offered a reassuring but devious smile. “I know how to get it set up.”

Cornelia’s brows knitted together as she narrowed her eyes at him. “Have you used SAS before?”

“No, but the instructions that they give you for any software install always come with the thing you’re trying to install,” he responded. He was now in full bullshit artist mode. “The reason you don’t see the prompts is that your computer runs out of RAM

Cornelia tipped her head to one side. “How?”

Jack smoothly said, “Microsoft came up with the idea to put a folder called system32 in the Windows folder that holds 32 gigs of worthless crap that intentionally clogs up your machine. They do this so they can sell you one or more of the many PC cleaning tools that they conveniently own.”

Cornelia pointed to the rest of her classmates. “Then why is SAS up and running for everybody else?” Shirley, their computers were identical to hers. After all, they all came from the same computer lab at school.

“Because they got rid of system 32”

By now, Cornelia started to calm down. Her facial expression softened and she didn't bark as much as before. “So how do you get rid of system 32?”

“Well,” Jack began, “you used to be able to get rid of it by simply deleting it, but unfortunately, you can't do that anymore. What you have to do is wipe the computer clean, and doing that will erase everything on the machine.”

“Not a problem,” Cornelia said, “I've got all my stuff on a USB stick anyway”

Jack chuckled. “OK,” he pointed at the screen, “you'll want to open the terminal”

“OK, now what?” Cornelia asked after opening the terminal.

Jack studies the screen. “Cool, now go to the root and type rm -rf */”

Cornelia inadvertently typed in the most dangerous bash command. “Done”

“Perfect. Now, restart the computer”

The two of them high-five. Cornelia turned back to her computer and discovered the fix did not work as expected. It rendered the computer useless.

Cornelia huffed. “Very funny, Jack,” she grumbled, “now tell me how to fix it.”

Jack turned around. “Fix what?” When has Jack ever fixed anything?

Cornelia started to lose her temper. She pointed at the computer and shouted, “I'm getting a black window and now the computer doesn’t work. Tell me how to fix this.” 

Marcus looks at what’s happening to Cornelia’s machine. “Yikes,” he said as he saw the barrage of error messages on the screen, “That doesn’t look good”

“No shit!” Cornelia barked, “How the hell do I fix this!?”

Unlike Jack, Marcus actually said something useful. “From the looks of it, you will need to put the Windows disk in, reset the PC, and keep pressing F8 until it gives you an option to boot from the disk. And then you can restore installation”

Cornelia got up from her seat and approached Mrs. Kaur’s desk. “Excuse me,” she began, “Do you have the disk for the Windows operating system?”

Mrs. Kaur looked up from her phone. She arched an eyebrow. “Why aren’t you working?” she asked.

Cornelia took a deep breath, trying to explain the technical mishap. “We had a problem installing SAS, and the OS got caught in the crossfire. We really need to reinstall it.”

Mrs. Kaur shook her head gently, silently wondering what the hell Cornelia did. “I’m sorry, but I can’t provide a student with the disks for the OS. However, let me call the school district's IT desk. They’ll be able to help you.” 

With that, she reached for the phone, seemingly ready to connect Cornelia with the support she desperately needed. Instead of calling the IT desk, the teacher made a phony 911 call in Spanish. 

She would have gotten away with it except Cornelia spoke Spanish. Cornelia shouted, "Put down the mobile phone and step away, you big liar!" It sounded better in Spanish.

It went downhill quickly. When Cornelia’s mother saw the video, she quickly pulled Cornelia out of that school. None of her classmates knew where she ended up after that.
