despite the fact that gray is both aggressive and violent, he's not malicious. he doesn't make it his business to actively harm anyone, and he also doesn't derive any pleasure or positive feelings from hurting people or people getting hurt—he simply doesn't care if you do or don't get hurt. for the most part, if he doesn't get triggered or you don't try to control or deprive him, he's a pretty chill, laid-back dude.
gray is incredibly allergic to attempts at control exertion. so allergic, in fact, that while he doesn't like being told or forced to do what he doesn't want, he also doesn't do it to others. if you don't do something and it's no skin off his teeth, then he'll just shrug and move on. if you don't do something and it gets in the way of his ability to do something he wants to do or affects his own freedom, he'll simply attack you. still doesn't mean you have to do it, mind you. attacking you at that point isn't about trying to make you do something, rather than a reaction to being deprived.
although there's no instance of psychosis present in gray's pathology—not unrelated to drugs, at any rate—one could easily be confused that it might be simply because he has a habit of talking to himself. the biggest issue is that he also has a habit to mumble and mutter—even when he's talking to someone else.
gray is someone who is often incredibly stuck in his own head, to the point where he might zone out to retreat inside of his mind to entertain ideas, or follow mental rabbit holes. externally, it just looks like he goes on stand-by, but whenever gray does into this 'stand-by mode', usually he's visualising and solving problems, or he clocked out momentarily because what's going on in his own head is miles more interesting than whatever's going on outside it.
being hyperintelligent is something that most people would consider a positive, a guarantee to success; to a certain point, however, such level of intelligence stops one from being able to function, in society or otherwise. gray's mind is a machine, an incredibly fast, efficient machine that never stops, that can suck in and process information faster than it can be offered, and while it means he is an engineering prodigy and he has absolutely no lag between his mind and his reaction time—making that sometimes his body reacts before he's consciously aware of it—it also means that he's perpetually fighting against deadly boredom.
boredom is the force that makes him so incredibly maladjusted—aside from his history of violent childhood abuse and his poor socialisation, perhaps. when his mind starving for information or work that sparks creativity, imagination, or necessitates any sort of mental heavy-lifting, that boredom causes a feeling akin to severe anxiety. a restlessness, a physical pain, almost, that drives him to destroy rather than create. this is where most instances of violent destruction—such as arson, immolation, reckless endangerment of himself and others, etc—stems from. when gray is sufficiently stimulated and enriched throughout his day, he is absolutely harmless.
most women-shaped entities elicit more neutral reactions from gray, since at worst, women have been absent from his life and traumas. while as a rule, gray doesn't trust anyone, he trusts men least of all, especially when they're older than he is.
don't be nice to him. don't smile at him. at most, be neutral, treat him like he doesn't exist. paying any attention to him is like needles on his skin. he doesn't want to be perceived, he wants to be left to his own devices. being nice to him is bad, because people aren't nice, and being nice to him means you have an ulterior motive. and that means you're a threat.
afterglow is very careful about what tools they provide him to do the work they force him to do, simply because it's established that he can do a lot of damage with even a little bit. he's a very prolific hacker, and for years he was a thorn in afterglow's side, jacking very important research right from their servers—which he'd slice through like a knife through hot butter—and selling them to the highest bidders, and if he was feeling particularly malicious, he'd just delete dependencies—tools or research upon which other research was reliant to proceed, effectively scuttling a whole bunch of projects in one fell swoop. this all stopped three years ago, and it's the main reason why he's banned from accessing anything with a connection to servers or given anything that he can use to access servers.

Hanging on the Telephone: A Hollow Grove Short
31 Days of Horror Day 11: Dialup
DO NOT ASK WHY a seance in the basement of the Edelhaus Church was enough to blow out the WiFi across the county. The church elders would rather the citizens of Hollow County forget about that. As would the Mayor’s office.
City Hall promised that the network should be back up in 48 hours. The Public Works department and their Human Resource partners make no such promises and stated that the WiFi will be up when it's ready.
Hollow County was now an island in the Midwest. People were free from the rat race that was social media and the doom-and-gloom headlines foretelling the end.
So, of course, everyone was miserable. Or at least Mariela was. Ever since she moved to Hollow Grove about a year ago, she was always on the move. There was always something happening, and as a journalist, she had to keep track of it all.
The town was at a standstill. The biggest story of the day of why the town no longer had WiFi couldn’t be investigated. The newspaper’s HR partners and the Public Works’ HR partners made a blood pact that they weren’t allowed to investigate active service requests without written permissions. Someone had to pay the toll, and her boss, September, did not feel like giving up another organ.
“It’s too hot to languish with a festering wound,” the coward said by way of explanation.
The heat couldn’t be denied. Summers here were brutal and there was talk going around that whatever ghosts unleashed during the seance were messing with the AC units.
So nonessential businesses were closed. Which included the newspaper. Which left Mariela bored.
Mariela couldn’t be bored. She stewed even with her head inside her apartment’s freezer. She craved information and, in the cold clarity of the ice box, she hit upon an unlikely solution.
Bram, Mariela’s father, was a technophobe. To him, technology piqued with the Blackberry 5810 in 2002. Every new advancement since has been viewed with increasing suspicion.
“Why do I need to read 20 pages of legalese before I can use a damn phone?What are they asking me to sign away?” He ranted when Mariela gifted him a dumb smartphone for his birthday last year.
That phone was still in the box, by the by. But that same paranoid logic may offer her a saving grace for her network woes.
Collecting dust in her father’s cabin in the woods and still running on Windows 98 in the year of our lord 2016 was her father’s old dial-up computer. Dial-up computers used the telephone lines to connect to the internet rather than the towers that most WiFi used today. While the computer was in use, the phone was not. If she could rely the old infrastructure through the modem, she may get access to the wider web. Albeit a slow version that ran on hopes and dreams and a nearly 20 year backlog of updates.
More than anything, she was curious if she could. And this was the only situation that provided the experimental opportunity. It would at least fill an afternoon.
Her father grumbled when she drove out there. He didn’t like it when anyone came by announced, but he made a special exception for her.
“Because you love me,” she teased.
He pulled a sour face as he wiped his glistening brow with a dirty rag. From the spare parts and tool strewn about the patchy grass, he’s been working on his old red truck under the bright eye of the sun.
“It’s too damn hot for your foolishness, Ella.”
“Love you too, daddy.” She held up an extra water jug she brought from the store on the way. “You keeping hydrated?”
“Don’t you start with me.”
He unlocked the door to his wooden cabin. There was no noticeable relief from the heat other than the shade. A sad looking fan oscillating in the corner moved hot air throughout the small space, so at least he still had power.
Windows on the back wall let in the harsh light outside. It was set over the bucket that served as the kitchen sink. The rest of the space opened up into a single room that served as a bedroom, kitchen, office space. The only other room inside was the bathroom off on the right side. Right next to the front door on an uneven wooden table was his desktop computer in all its boxy glory.
After blowing off the dust of the ancient tower, she booted it up. It was a reluctant start filled with clacked whirring before giving way to the droning of the shrill cacophony of the dial tone. Sweet nostalgia.
“I’m getting a cold pack from the RV,” her dad announced when the screen flickered on. “Want anything?”
“Alcohol will dehydrate you faster. You should drink water,” Mariela deadpanned.
“I said don’t start,” he said before stalking outside, grumbling all the while.
The screen reluctantly flickered on and took forever to reach the home screen. She had to wait an additional five minutes for her to be able to interact with anything as the old school desktop interface buffered in piece by piece. In the center of the screen, surrounded by a sea of blue, was a pop-up.

Mariela frowned and moved the cursor to click out of it. Two more popped in its place with the same manic zeal.

Mariela jumped in her seat when the phone at the edge of the table rang. Which was impossible. The phone shouldn’t ring while the computer was on.
Mariela picked up the corded handset after the second ring and held it up to her ear. Rather than the screech of the dial up, she heard of voice chiseled from ground up rock and cracked ice.
“IT’S HERE! IT’S HERE! IT’S HERE!”
She slammed down the receiver and the computer came alive. Hundreds—no, thousands!—of pop-ups filled the screen with the same declaration.

Mariela bent down to yank the cord from the wall. The screen went black and a thick silence descended.
Her dad walked back in, nursing a tall can. “How’s the old machine running?”
Mariela looked up at him, her expression blank. “You got a virus.”

Fear in the Realm of Fire
Entrance to Bloodstar is just the challenging feat as one would imagine. I readily admit that my first smuggling run there was mostly chance, having slipped in during a small commotion at the blast walls caused by some particularly audacious scavengers. I've since learned to shadow a certain type of crowd to the borders, ones who will occupy the soldiers without provoking them into a full sweep. If no such groups are available, I simply conduct business in the Outer Wastes until an opportunity arises.
Step inside Praedis with clandestine intent, and the mindset of occupation falls into place. A city built above itself, with metal roads held between skyscraper pincers, and verdant boulevards with three stacked layers under false sunlight. All of it joined as though one great scaffold, with a thousand corners to hide in and six directions to reach them by. The solution: no inch out of sight from the Republic's military. Ramped accessways for civilian traffic, and cargo lift priority for the APCs. Gently followed wherever you walk by the curious eye of a gun nest's IMG barrel. Hardfire walls that shutter entire districts, and flash orders to lie on the ground in searing neon letters. Once, a nervous driver noticed the projectors fizzle and made to outrun them. A moment slower, and they too would've been cut in half along with their car.
You hear countless tales up and down there. Patriotic boasts, rebellious rallies, disillusioned longing for the lifestyle of the stateless wanderers. The latest atrocities of the Old Order and the Sulphurous. Occasionally, a forbidden love story between the warring factions. Very rarely, an eccentric theory on the fate of the Forgemasters. And then, there's a story you never hear. The one you can feel in everyone's mind when the topic drifts too close to state experiments, or the astonishing leap in inferno technology. People's words lurch mid-sentence, like an arm pulled away from a flame. Instinctive fear. To the Ashen, technology is almost religion, and this queer faith has its demon, its antagonist. My curiosity was too powerful. I made a transaction. For knowledge.
What is it about the human mind that gives it such capacity for violence? An indecipherable network of feelings and impulses, so they spun the tale. The animal instinct to destroy dangers and opponents, suppressed and funnelled by a tangled web of personhood. What if, through diligent study, you could remove the person from its path? What if that mental shutter to hatred could be replaced with a synthetic, ever-open gateway? Conjoin the power of mortal rage with the surgical precision of a computer… where would the equilibrium fall, between the incensed and the unfeeling? I paid to know. And I almost regret it.
They called it Project Amalgam. They told me it was out there, in any of a thousand corners in six directions. And they told me a machine can hate.
I quickly took my leave.
