Doldrey — Only Death Is Eternal (Iron Lung)
Tumblr media
Only Death Is Eternal, the new tape from crusty death metal band Doldrey, is among the most thrilling, hugely satisfying releases from the metal underground so far this year. Unstaunched energy, massively chunky riffage, a general sensibility that’s as nasty as it is raw and exciting — all those things characterize Doldrey’s sound more or less adequately, but we’ve heard those words before, and none of them captures what’s so engaging and immediate in these songs. The sorta-stale typicality of those descriptors is complemented by the symbolics of the band’s output; all the muscled warriors and carnage in the titles and j-card art operate somewhere very remote from our everyday realities. But somehow Only Death Is Eternal is right there, fitted into the most aggro contours of the current conjuncture. It’s a terrific record.
Likely Doldrey would be wise to approach the ideological problematics of our social moment with some tentative, distant maneuvering. The band is from Singapore, and while young men are no longer subject to arrest if they wear their hair a bit long in that city-state, its dominant culture and legal-juridical apparatus still skew strongly toward the conservative. Death metal and especially crust (with that subgenre’s strong orientation toward lefty radicalism) are likely perceived as expressions of undesirable politics, and of aberrant personality.
Hence, perhaps, Doldrey’s semiotics, most of which can be traced to Kentaro Miura’s manga Berserk. (Doldrey, I am told, is the name of a fortress important in one of the long-running comic’s early narrative arcs.) That explains the swords-and-sorcery proclivities of the band’s album art and the overheated language of some of its song titles: “Blood of the Serpent,” “Torture Paradise,” “All Is Hell.” Those read like a middle-schooler’s sense of the profound, or of the profoundly brutal, if that middle schooler had been brought up on a steady diet of Conan the Barbarian, Moorcock’s Eternal Champion stories and, well, Berserk.
The nerd-factor associated with piles of mass-market paperbacks and endless trips to the comic book shop is effective cover. And maybe it’s not really (or not just) cover. Berserk’s most emphatic symbolic element is its pervasive and hyper-graphic violence, some of which has disturbing scope and awfully imagined cruelty. Doldrey’s music taps into some of that intensity, especially in the heaviness of its death metal buzz and thunder. Check out the middle section of “Moral Decay” or the last third of the title track. Still got all your teeth? Better turn it up louder. And try not to think about ongoing genocidal wars or immiserating modes of human exploitation when you do so. Good luck with that.
Beyond the implied fascination with bloodshed and the nods to Swedeath unpleasantness, it’s the crusty stuff that lifts the record into the musical midnight sun. This reviewer loves the forty or so seconds of flat-out intensity in the middle of “All Is Hell” (beginning just after the guitar solo) and the opening 90 seconds of “Societal Machine.” You can just about smell the filthy denim and feel the greasy leather, all crowding into a moldy basement space. And in that crush of bodies, you’re happy about it all: the smell, the feel, the sense of being among like-minded freaks. Allies, as it were.
None of that will dispel the nightmare that is 2024’s ongoing tilt toward fascism, a mind-boggling combo of scenes as awful as the race-rioting in the UK and as stupid as Hulk Hogan ripping open his tee shirt on the RNC podium. Berserk? Yes, but also all too real. Doldrey has our soundtrack ready.

A funny thing, besides straight up adaptations and original material, some of the Conan comics you're reading are actually adapting Howard's non-Conan stories, like issue #9 is an adaptation of a series about a guy who keeps dreaming of his past reincarnated lives (one of those stories, Valley of the Worm, did actually get a really good straightforward adaptation, and the series got referenced in a Serpent War mini-series from 2019).
Suppose that's why they used King Kull as a character too. I'd never be able to tell the difference. I'm still at the point of dipping my toes into Conan and his world. If the characterization or tone is different enough to give away that they weren't originally Conan stories it will be a WHILE before I know enough to pick up on it.

A sampling for "Does Moon Knight have a vendetta against vehicles or do vehicles have a vendetta against Moon Knight???"
This was initially prompted by an ask I got from @drifting-pieces-blog-blog a long while back about Moon Knight wrecking vehicles, but it has since ballooned into the seeming many times various vehicles and Moon Knight have tried to destroy each other. 😅

Thanks for tagging me @stellanslashgeode!
Last Song(s): Dangerous Night by Thirty Seconds to Mars ("theme song" for my unfinished Bossk/Jango AU fic) & A Symptom of Being Human - Pop Remix by Shinedown (brainstorming song/theme song of sorts for my weekly Call of Cthulhu game)
Currently Reading: Fall of Cadia by Robert Rath (managed to snag one of the limited run "Mega Edition" copies), Ciaphas Cain: Vainglorious by Sandy Mitchell (the newest book in the series that got me into Warhammer 40K) & Halo: Outcasts by Troy Denning (my boi Thel is back, and so is Vale! AAAAAA so good!)
Currently "Writing": My Bossk/Jango semi-AU fic (writing action involving firefights is harder than it seems, at least to make it interesting, and the idea of doing an homage to Fifth Element is fun but not as easy as I thought)
Currently Playing: Ace Combat 7 (playing & modding it for the millionth time as I continue brainstorming for the canon-divergent/semi-AU fic I'm probably never going to write) Baldur's Gate 3 (running two playthroughs atm - one as the Red Prince from Divinity: Original Sin 2, and the other as default albino dragonborn Dark Urge)
Currently Watching: Ahsoka (very fun so far, loving Baylan & Shin, really excited to see where it goes from here)
Next on the Watchlist: I'm due a re-watch of Battlestar Galactica - I found my old, stalled-out semi-AU fic from a decade ago, and I can feel the brainrot setting in.
Current Obsessions: My weekly Call of Cthulhu game (of which I am GM/Keeper) has restarted after a multi-month hiatus, so I'm getting back into the swing of things with that (we're using "The Two-Headed Serpent" for our campaign, so much snek-related shenanigans are occurring). I'm currently planning out ideas for downtime activities between two of the pre-written campaign chapters. I have to determine if I'm capable of an Arnie and/or Jason Momoa impression for long enough without laughing, because one of our characters (a Scottish WW1 medical corps veteran turned professor of linguistics) is a direct linage descendant of Conan the Barbarian; his biological mothers are the Great Old One Yhoundeh and her sole remaining - as of the 1930s - human high priestess; his wife is a Hunting Horror and his boyfriend (his old CO from the Great War) is a Servant of Sobek (think Alfred from Batman if he was a really buff anthro crocodile man). Not to mention his adopted son from Borneo. Man's got a complicated life lmao.

My 2022 in Books
This year I read 78 books which is a step down from the last few years (all 100+) but I'm trying to read in a more purposeful, slow way, trying to savor and absorb what I read, which is definitely a challenge since I've always been a very speedy reader.
There's a complete list below the cut of all the books, but here were my absolute favorites of this year:

My favorite boss fight in Conan Exiles, from a story perspective is the Barrow King. Gameplay wise he’s just a tall human with a longsword. But in terms of his role in the story, he’s much more interesting.
Originally the area that would be called the Exiled Lands was ruled by one of the Elder Races, ancient beings long before humanity existed. These were the Giant Kings. Their capital in the Exiled Lands is the “Unnamed City”. I’m sure they had a name for it, but I think it’s unnamed in the sense that it had a name, and that name has been removed.
The Giant Kings were ruled by a triumvirate. The Archivist was essentially a historian. The Warmaker was in charge of the military and protecting the species. Last was the Priest-King, in charge of spiritual matters, such as their religion that worshiped Set, the Old Serpent. Their worship of Set allowed them an alliance with their Elder Race kin, the Serpentmen of Valusia. This will come into full effect later.
When humans, survivors of the sunken continent Lemuria arrived at the Exiled Lands, they sought help from the Giant Kings. A deal was made, a certain amount of land allotted to the humans, along with special bracelets that would translate between languages. But humans reproduce much faster than Giant-Kings, and much more. War started between the species, especially when the humans discovered the Serpentmen in the volcano, ancient ancestral enemies.
It is unclear if it was through sorcery or more mundane means, but the Priest-King had a son through a human. Tyros would grow to be the first human to slay a dragon in the Giant-King’s arena. Eventually, Tyros fell in love with Telith, the daughter of the leader of the Lemurian humans. The halfbreed, along with his entire Silent Legion, would defect from the Giant-Kings and side with humanity during the war.
This culminated in the battle between Tyros and the Priest-King. The two battled somewhere in the region that became known as the Mounds of the Dead. While even Tyros was dwarfed by the Giant-King, he was successful in defeating his foe. As the Priest-King lay dying, he cursed his son. Eternal life, or rather undeath. The entire Silent Legion, the Priest-King, and even the dragon buried beneath the arena would never rest.
The curse must have taken some time to take hold, as the Barrow King had a tomb built for him, and sealed with Giant-King blood. Tyros retreated to the Black Keep with his Legion, where they remain to this day, watching their sanity drain day by day.
When you approximate the blood of a Giant-King with demon blood, you are granted access to the tomb. You are greeted with a statement, a question and disbelief. “Awoken, by a mortal?” Throughout the fight, the Barrow King will continue to taunt you “We were your GODS!” and “Your kind was always a pest”
The actual fight is a push over though, as he is weaker than the Cimmerians and Wights in the area around him.

The interesting thing is, some of Conan comics, besides straight up adaptations and original stories, are atualyl adapting Howard's non-Conan stuff. Dude wrote a loooot of stuff for various pulp mags, and fantasy is actually just a small fraction of those, he wrote westerns, horror, historical adventures ect. Issue #9 for instance, is adapting one of his sotries about this guy who sees his past lives (one of thsoe, the Valley of the Worm, actually got a real good straight-forward comic retelling), who is even referenced in a recent Conan mini, Serpent War, where he teams up with one of his other characters, Dark Agnes.
When you're a pulp writer in the 1920s you really only have two options. -Be ungodly prolific (there's no social media to distract you AND they've just discovered cocaine) -Die tragically young (probably of cholera or TB, for it is always those two)

Moon Knight Fail Compilation (Part Six)
1. Technically,,,this worked, so I'm not sure if it can be considered a fail, but surely there must have been some other course of action that he could have taken besides blowing himself up; “Chapter II: Relics of the Gods,” Conan: Serpent War (Vol. 1/2019), #2.

2. It's just...the whole combo of the incredibly lethal and elite hero with a cracked phone that's not even fully charged; “Blackmail,” Moon Knight (Vol. 9/2021), #4.

3. Not only was the TV show not very good, it actively compromises Marc's secret identity; “Blackmail,” Moon Knight (Vol. 9/2021), #4.

4. The sentiment that one does not need to be wealthy in order to do good is beyond excellent, but, Marc...you need to eat (i.e. "Marc single-handedly loses all of Steven's money"); “Blackmail,” Moon Knight (Vol. 9/2021), #4.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. Marc is vomited out of a haunted house directly into a dumpster. He promises vengeance only to later befriend said haunted house; “Stranger,” Moon Knight (Vol. 9/2021), #9.

6. Yes, Marc did indeed get punched by a giant robot fist; “So White. Yet, So Dark,” Moon Knight: Black, White & Blood (Vol. 1/2022), #1.

10. Like, seriously....no defenses; “Born to Be,” Moon Knight: Black, White & Blood (Vol. 1/2022), #4.

Bonus from Earth-1610: Tries to warn Spider-Man but instead Spider-Man reports him to the police; “Warriors: Part 6,” Ultimate Spider-Man (Vol. 1/2000), #84.

Solomon Kane, created by Robert E. Howard, is a late 16th–early 17th century Puritan. Solomon Kane is a somber-looking man who wanders the world with no apparent goal other than to vanquish evil in all its forms. His adventures often take him from Europe to the jungles of Africa and back.

I have officially read Conan: Serpent War and just -
Yes please give me all the interesting Khonshu characterizations and Agnes holding her own with Konan and Solomon Kane being reluctantly fond and admiring of Marc. It was so much fun.
Also I now desperately want more about Marc and Kane's road trip of theft and violent bonding on their way to defeat Set. (And also maybe Solomon/Marc because I'm a simple writer, i see bickering and I want to shove them together more.)
