A Miracle in the Marshes: How South Africa’s Wattled Cranes Defied Extinction
There are moments in conservation that feel like small miracles, glimmers of hope that remind us nature can heal if we just give it a chance. For me, one of those moments is the quiet, steady comeback of South Africa’s wattled cranes. Towering nearly six feet tall, its ash-gray feathers glowing in the golden light of a wetland at dusk, it moves with a kind of quiet dignity that takes ones breath…

Matt Ford reflects on his trip to our project in Madagascar: - “Overall my visit to Madagascar left me with a far better understanding of both the beauty of the island and its wildlife, and some of the complex challenges facing its conservation. Your support is helping to make this work possible but, as always, we could do more. Even relatively basic supplies such as boots, raincoats and cameras can make a real difference to the local forest patrollers, so every donation counts.” #madagascar #madagascar🇲🇬 #lemur #lemurs #indri #primates #primatesofinstagram #aspinallfoundation #wildlifeconservation #conservation #conservationmatters #conservationworks #communityconservation #charity #wildandfree https://www.instagram.com/theaspinallfoundation/p/BvKQy9QF7sA/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=10rfqmat09rb8

This is #publicland. This particular piece of heaven was where I was last September. I don't post allot@of@photos of hunts or hikes or anything because I don't think photos do the areas justice. I think if you have an urge to see the kinds of things #hunters #hikers #backpackers #anglers #backcountry folk see you need to go see them for yourself. To ensure that we all get to keep fulfilling those urges we need to #protectourpubliclands we need to #keepitpublic #keepitwild you don't have to join @backcountryhunters if you're not a hunter. What ever your particular trip is I urge you to take a moment of your time to consider conservation. If we do not stand up & tell the powers that be that #ourlandisnotforsale then we have lost already. Again if you disagree with hunting or fishing that is another conversation this is about protecting the land we all hold dear, the heritage of public lands that has been passed to us as torch bearers, that we will pass to the next generation. In order to do that we have to have something to pass on. #conservationworks #hunter #fisherman #fishing #hiking #adventure #wheretheroadends #godeeper #staylonger #meateater #vegan #notredorblue #savepubliclands (at All American Tattoo)

This #MarineMonday 🌊 goes out to - #takingaction ✅ I feel happiest when I am in the ocean, and when I am contributing to marine conservation. It's all good and well tweeting, instagramming and talking about it.. but how can I, or you take action? I live over an hour a way from the coast, and work in marine science... Stupid right? 🤦🏼‍♀️ . We talk about reducing plastics in the ocean and our carbon footprint, for me personally I want to be doing what I can at the source, that I can control. That includes things like beach cleans, education and awareness, & changing my energy supplier to 100% renewables (which I have done) using the car less etc etc., but also I want to be out restoring the oceans because not only are we are losing our oceans ecosystems such as seagrass at an alarming rate, the ocean stores the most carbon! Seagrass accounts for 10 per cent of the ocean’s capacity to store carbon, it can also capture carbon from the atmosphere up to 35 times faster than tropical rainforests!! ⚡ If we don't protect and restore the seagrass beds & other ecosystems, the oceans ability to store carbon reduces and we lose amazing habitat in the process 😔 . Get me out in the ocean restoring and protecting seagrass beds please and mangroves and all of the others... This is why I have a 'side hustle'. Because as much as I am doing what I can already working for the environment in the environmental industry, I can do so much more than just sitting behind a desk. I can't wait to get back out there and be able to help marine charities and assist with on the ground, hands on conservation work because it's where I feel and am most fufilled 🐬 That is me taking action now, and in the future 💪 . #marinescientist #conservationwork #getmethere #seagrass #restoration #saveouroceans #bluecarbon #carbonsequestration #takeaction #whatareyouactuallydoing #snorkelling #greece #underwater #marinelife #oceanlover #sidehustle #workingonline #internetbasedbusiness #climatechange #marineconservation https://www.instagram.com/p/CFaDCFejG8I/?igshid=1d94d8qesuyib

The mystery of the Franklin Memorial in Greenwich
We all know that the Franklin expedition never returned home and after several unsuccessful searches for Sir John Franklin and his comrades, the Order of Parliament decided in 1858 to erect a monument in honour of the lost expedition. This monument was eventually built and was initially located in the Painted Hall in Old Naval College in Greenwich London. On it there is an inscription that reminds on the men of Erebus and terror. And since 1873 there is another inscription in the base, which was extended. Beneath lie the remains, of one of Franklin's companions, who perished in the Arctic Regions 1848, Discovered and brought away from King William's Land by Captain Hall the United States Arctic Explorer 1869.

The Memorial of the lost Franklin expedition, photo by Steve James
This inscription indicates that this memorial is not only a plaque, but also a tomb. However, the memorial and the remains were moved several times, first from the staircase of the Painted Hall under the opposite dome, then again from there behind the altar of the University Chapel and finally only in 2009 to the entrance of the chapel's vestibule.
And only then theyx dared to have a close look at this mysterious tomb. It turned out to be a three-part box. The first was made of wood, probably teak, with an inscription plate:
THIS BOX CONTAINS HUMAN BONES, CONJECTURED TO HAVE BEEN THE SKELETON OF THE BODY OF LIEUT HENRY TD LE VESCONTE OF HM SHIP EREBUS, WHO PERISHED WITH MANY OTHERS,ABOUT THE YEAR 1848,IN THE EXPEDITION TO THE ARCTIC REGIONS COMMANDED BY SIR JOHN FRANKLIN. THE BONES WERE FOUND BY CAPT HALL, THE AMERICAN EXPLORER, IN KING WILLIAM'S LAND;AND TAKEN BY HIM TO NEW YORK IN 1869,WHENCE THEY WERE BROUGHT TO ENGLAND BYADMIRAL INGLEFIELD. THEY WERE DEPOSITED HERE BY ORDER OF OF THE LORDS OF THE ADMIRALTY IN 1873.

The skeleton, photographed during conservationwork
Among it appeared a wooden box wrapped in lead, the last one in it was in the style of the second box. Only there were the following objects:
- A 23.6 cm long sacrificial cross made of three layers of cardboard with flowers sewn on it.
- A large, complete map entitled "Discoveries in the Arctic Sea up to MDCCCLIX", on which the legend "London, published in accordance with the law of the Parliament in the Hydrographic Office of the Admiralty on January 20, 1855, supplemented up to 1860" can be found. - The map section is entitled "Louisia de Archipelago" and shows the Calvados chain in Papua New Guinea. This map measures about 90 cm x 35 cm and was clearly cut out of a much larger map.
- A small white envelope measuring 21.5 cm x 10.5 cm on which the inscription "On Her Majesties Service" is pre-printed on the top and "Hydrographic Department Admiralty" in the left-hand corner below. On the envelope is handwritten "Three teeth - one ... stopped with gold" with the initials SHR. The envelope contained a folded 30 cm x 20.5 cm sheet of blue writing paper, sealed with red wax, although it had been pulled apart before. The paper was handwritten: "Teeth of upper jaw; right side; ... incisor; canine and m premolar", and inside were three teeth.
- A white invitation card, 9.7cmx13.9cm, printed on the front as an invitation; "The President and Council of the Royal Society request the honour of Admiral Richards (handwritten name inserted) at Burlington House on Saturday 27 April at 9 o'clock". Not transferable: This card is to be presented". On the reverse of this card is a handwritten note: 'These bones were placed in this coffin by Admiral Richards, the Admiralty's Hydrographer, on 30 January 1873' and is signed by Geo. Henry Richards signed.
- A paper packet containing various coloured presumably fabric remnants. And finally the mortal remains wrapped in white linen.
As the inscription says the remains are supposed to be Lieutenant Henry Thomas Dundas LeVesconte. At least that's what the English biologist Thomas Henry Huxley found out in 1872. By taking a close look at the skull and finding that this one had a gold tooth, the chin was also very distinctive. Together with some family members who could confirm that Le Vesconte had a gold tooth and also the very prominent chin, it was clear to Huxley that it could only be LeVesconte.

In 2009 after the discovery of the grave the remains were given to English Herritage to investigate them thoroughly. After an isotope examination of the teeth, it turned out that the individual did not grow up in Devon like LeVesconte but probably in Scotland. After that a forensic facial reconstruction was made and compared with the daguerreotype photograph and someone else suddenly came into question. It appears to be Harry Duncan Spens Goodsir, the expedition's acting assistant surgeon and scientist onboard HMS Erebus. He probably died of scurvy, at least that's what the researchers have been able to find out so far.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Harry Goodsir without and with the reconstructed skull over the photo, which by the way was for a long time a common forensic method to assign skulls to victims
But the identification is not 100% sure, because some officers were not photographed during the journey.  However, tissue samples of the remains have been kept, so that attempts to match DNA with a living direct descendant of Goodsir can be made if anyone should come forward.
The skeleton was, after completion of the investigations and after it was photographed, placed back in its grave and carefully sealed in the memorial so that no one would disturb it.

The Eurasian otter is the most widely distributed otter species, found in Asia, Europe, Africa. That said, the species has faced incredible trials and tribulations--it is even believed to be extinct from Switzerland and Liechtenstein. For otters to establish themselves in an area they need clean water and plenty of fish--basically, a "good" environment. So, you can imagine my great pleasure when I heard that this species was being seen again in the rivers in Sichuan's Min Mountains. Last fall while traveling there with my family we managed to spot this one frolicking with a sibling and we were privileged to observe and photograph them. My daughter got a great shot with her point and shoot of which she is very proud, and she also got to watch their natural, undisturbed behavior in the wild--she couldn't have been happier and neither could I, for so many reasons. @jedweingarten @wildwondersofchina @natgeocreative #rivers #cleanwater #waterislife #conservationworks #comeback #hopeful (at China)

Some days the weather sucks, others your coworkers are frustrating, and still others are rough for things having nothing to do with work. But multiple times a week I get to hike, 4×4, exercise, learn something new, and see spectacular sights; the sort of things I would go out of my way and make time for back home. You could say I'm lucky. And you would be right. I'm incredibly fortunate and grateful for this experience. A week from now it will all be over. I'll miss this place and these people. And then it's on to the next adventure ... #thesca #trailwork #conservationwork #lifeexperiences (at Santa Catalina Island)

A few more otter pics to brighten your day!
Tumblr media
Reminder that this adorable event was made possible thanks to conservation of a threatened species. Not that long ago, sea otters were hunted to near extinction.
Tumblr media
But thanks to legislative protection and a change of heart toward these furriest of sea creatures, the otter population has rebounded to steady levels in the Monterey Bay!

The #Eagles won the Super Bowl AND bald eagles won #conservation. From @usfws (US Fish & Wildlife Services) Website: After nearly disappearing from most of the United States decades ago, the bald eagle is now flourishing across the nation and no longer needs the protection of the Endangered Species Act.   The two main factors that led to the recovery of the bald eagle were the banning of the pesticide DDT and habitat protection afforded by the Endangered Species Act for nesting sites and important feeding and roost sites. This recovery could not have been accomplished without the support and cooperation of many private and public landowners.
