Dodder (Cuscuta spp). Both native and invasive species occur in Texas, but they are difficult to distinguish, especially out of bloom. This parasitic plant germinates in the soil and begins seeking a suitable host immediately. When it finds one, it attaches itself and infiltrates the host's vascular system. Once attached, it no longer has any need to remain directly bound to the soil itself, so the seedling root dies, and the plant continues to grow outwards, infesting new hosts along the way.

#2573 - Calystegia tuguriorum - New Zealand Bindweed
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AKA pōuwhiwhi, and pōwhiwhi. Formerly Convolvulus tuguriorum. Calystegia comes from the Greek words kalyx ‘cup’, and stege ‘a covering’ because the calyx of some bindweeds is enclosed in two bracts. tuguriorum means 'growing around huts'.
A perennial vine which grows in lowland areas throughout New Zealand, but also found in Chile and the Juan Fernandez islands.
Easy to grow from seed and rooted pieces, and once established actually becomes difficult to eradicate. When grown through a hedge the large white flowers show off nicely and the creeping stems are more easily contained.
Known to hybridise with C. soldanella and probably C. sepium subsp. roseata.
Pancake Rocks, New Zealand

How do I arrive at a finished painting? Persistence, patience, and gradual refinement of focal areas. I try not to paint everything in the scene precisely in order to emphasize certain areas, but I do try to achieve a structured composition where there's a balance between various elements like complementary colors, shapes within the composition, light contrast, brushwork precision, etc. Ultimately, I stop painting when I feel like I've corrected most of the problem areas, and the painting starts to harmonize together like a symphony of notes. Once I've got a cohesive design that feels both tangible and connected in space, I usually add some satin varnish and let it be.
This painting is called "Convolvulus Tricolor" and was made with acrylic paint on pine. My inspiration came from my love of blooming flowers in the garden and all things garden related.
