Workplace au: Beca is a new software engineer at the office and is extremely quiet. She doesn’t participate in any office activities, happy hours, or parties. When she doesn’t go to a mandatory meeting management pulls in Chloe from HR (whose already noticed the pattern and is worried) to speak with her
A/N: It’s been a while! I’ve been working a lot, but I’m going to get back to writing. This is literally the 60th time I’ve written Bechloe!
Read on Ao3 | Request prompts here
Beca looked around the office through the thick lenses on her glasses. Whoever had summoned her here had a flare for comfort; there was a leather office chair with a fuzzy turquoise pillow. A vase of lilies sat at the edge of the wood next to photos that Beca couldn’t decide were family or friends. She scrutinized the smiling faces and tried haplessly to guess which one was running late to their own meeting.
Beca picked up one of the stress balls that were on the edge of the desk and gave it a squeeze. It was well worn, and practically putty in her hands. She flipped it over and read the advertisement for some dentist downtown before she set it down and lowered herself in the seat even further. Her stare found a gold plated name: CHLOE BEALE
It was embarrassing, being called to the marketing floor, like this. She cared about the interworking’s of their projects, not the shiny ads that they printed on the sides of buses, or the giant PR parties that quickly followed a new release. No one else in her department had been phoned, but they all watched as she walked, red-faced, to the elevator.
The door creaked open and she found herself straightening her posture with a heavy breath. She had no one to impress here, not a single person, but still- she wanted to make a solid impression. Maybe one with a firm handshake and a questioning stare.
“I am so sorry I’m late.” The woman spoke before showing her face. She set down a big mug of what looked like chocolate, or maybe Coffee that wasn’t actually coffee. Her features were shrouded with copper locks, barely tamed. She let a large stack of flyers hit the desk with a muted thump. “You’re probably confused. I would be too.”
The woman sat down in the chair and smiled brightly. She had soft features cut with startling blue eyes. It was a nice smile, Beca decided. She was confused, however, but mostly intrigued. “That’s okay,”
“I’m not very punctual. I put out the fires that are burning the fastest, you know?”
“Sure,” Beca shifted herself in the chair “Does that make me a fire?”
“Mmm, a sparkler, maybe. Controlled.”
A controlled fire, that was better than nothing. Beca hadn’t seen a title on this woman’s door. Maybe she was the supervisor for PR, or just in Human Resources. She was comfortable, taking a sip of her drink and then cringing away from the heat.
“That wasn’t the right way to start. You’re not a fire.” Chloe grimaced and pulled a file out of the bottom drawer of her desk “It looks like you’re the most talented coder on your floor. Graduated Yale with a 4.0, which is super impressive. You’re efficient, Beca.”
She lifted a brow at this. She knew all of this, she stayed late into the night to make sure that she had the best numbers in her quadrant, even if it did sacrifice most of her personal time. Even still, hearing her accomplishments come out of this woman’s mouth made her stomach flutter. She wished she hadn’t put the stress ball back.
“Thank you,” She said.
“On paper, you’re perfect.”
“And not on paper?”
She sighed and threw the file onto the desk without reading the rest. “Frankly, we’ve gotten a few complaints.”
What was that supposed to mean? Sure she kept to herself, often eating her lunch in the corner of the break room with her headphones in. Sometimes, if it was warm enough, she would sit in her car and flip through whatever book she had forgotten to haul back up to her apartment. But she never caused trouble.
“You missed the last meeting,” She tried gently “Which raised a couple of red flags.”
Beca scoffed and sat forward “It was about the Christmas party. It didn’t’ seem important. The app did.”
“The app could have waited.”
“Funny, considering the whole company depends on the newest technology possible. If you all would rather play pin the tail on the Hanukah Donkey, that’s fine.”
She crossed her arms over her chest and schooled her expression like she couldn’t feel her heart in her throat. The way Chloe stared at her could stop a train dead on its tracks. She still couldn’t’ read the expression, and maybe that was a little scarier than being able to.
“You’re determined, and I like you.”
“I’m sensing a but.”
“But this company is based on inclusion. We try to make sure that everyone feels welcome. From what I’ve heard, you’ve been invited to Happy Hour multiple times and you refuse every effort.”
“This is about my social life?”
“Lack thereof,”
Beca leaned forward again, this time not hesitating to grab the neon yellow ball. She squeezed it twice without consequence. Chloe took three more gulps of her drink before pushing it to the side. She cupped her hands together as if to pray “people are concerned.”
“Well, they shouldn’t be. I like to keep to myself. It’s not a big deal.”
“You don’t even go to birthday parties!”
“I didn’t know there were any.” She shot back.
“You’ve worked here for three years, Beca. Do people just not age?”
She smiled at that, but then let the grin drop to a scowl. This was about principle. The company that she worked for shouldn’t have a say in what she did after hours, because they already controlled what she did from 9 to 5.
“I have a proposition for you.”
Beca sighed heavily “I’m listening.”
Chloe grasped one of the flyers on the desk and slid it towards Beca. It was glossy and overdone. The background was a dark red with sharp gold writing. A masquerade ball to advertise the new VPN that they had been developing for months now. It was a little too on the nose.
“You have to come with me to this ball.”
“Do I, now?” She glanced up from the paper, stare heavy “Look, Chloe, even if I was into social interaction, which I’m not”
“Cleary.”
“I wouldn’t start dipping my toes in with a classy masquerade ball where all of these big execs are going to mix drinks. I don’t even think programmers are invited to these things.”
“Which is why you’re my plus one. I planned the entire thing. The way I figure it, if you can fake your way through one night of glam and glitz, you can at least pretend to like sharing cake in the break room.”
She let out a long sigh and squeezed the stress ball a few more times. The woman across from her was staring expectantly. Maybe she had been a little standoffish since she started here. Right now, she cursed herself for not agreeing to one drink every once and awhile.
“One night?”
Chloe nodded with exaggeration “One night, and we’ll never bother you again.”
Beca narrowed her eyes “I don’t have a dress.”
“I do.”

Next Caller Pt 38
Tumblr media
Saturday started with an early morning wake up for you after the early night in and off to bed making you went. One bed at a time you made up each beginning with the sea foam room increasing your muscle ache to get back to work at the hotel again. Your three weeks were over and it was back to work again to jump back into your usual schedule. Crossing off that room you were back to the blue/orange room to make those four beds then headed to the kitchen to make a cup of cocoa while you gathered things to fix breakfast. Groggily Thorin came out to do just that only to spot you with a mug earning a narrowing of his eyes and rumble of, “What are you drinking?”
Turning your head to look at him you said, “Cocoa. Want some?”
“No thank you, I’ll get myself some juice.” He said starting to set the table and then jump in to help finish and serve out the food you had made.
By the time you had cleared your plates however the doorbell rang and you glanced at one another then he turned motioning his hand for you to stay there while him in his tensing shirtless wonder went to inspect who was here well before sunrise. Hushed conversation brought you to the entrance hall to spot Thorin accepting sleeping Frodo into his arms to slump across his chest. With Bilbo groggily bringing in a pop up crib saying to you softly, “Balin’s brother in law got into an accident.” Balin was next to show up as Bilbo came in to set up the crib in your living room next to the one he set up for Billi, who Balin eased into it telling you, “I am so sorry to drop in on you like this.”
You shook your head, “Don’t worry about it.”
Balin nodded saying, “We should be back tomorrow, hopefully early, he’s in surgery and his clan will need help in settling matters as he’s the only male left in a clan of thirty.”
Thorin patted Frodo’s back, “We’ve got the pebbles, do what you need to.” Watching as you accepted the full bag of jarred food for the pair you took into the kitchen to unload seeing the list of food schedules with notes of their preferences to help you out.
You were the closest couple able to handle the pair with enough room to help keep them occupied and not have you all on top of one another. While they slept you waited in the living room cuddling in the light of a crackling fire under a blanket only to wake again in time for their breakfast hearing them peering up at Kuu and the birds peering down at them. From playtime to ample pictures of your art sessions with the kids and bath time for Thorin where he lost the bubble wars bleeding into a joint story time from old Dwarven fairy tales you broke out their parents had little to worry about for the care of the duo.
Saturday into Sunday post toddler wielding trip into the town market to see what their sales were up to the both of you handled them with ease unable to have a moment to worry about anything. At least until your doorbell rang as dinner was being prepped and their parents poured in to join you and share all that was missed. Out again they went with toddlers in hand leaving you both clearing up the dishes only for him to sigh and hum out, “And I was eager to hear the Tale of the Shadow Man.”
Giggling softly you replied, “We can still read it if you like.” He nodded and from there you cuddled in the living room reading through the tale while the flock of birds’ moods were soured a bit in the absence of the toddlers they wanted to bid goodnight again.
 *
Pictures of your babysitting venture would be compiled later for another scrapbook with copies for the parents and a bit uncertain somehow through breakfast without the extra bodies to feed and ready for the day you both were off out of the garage headed for work. With pictures in hand Thorin left the muffins aside to smirk seeing his cousins coo and melt over the pictures of their time away only solidifying their opinions that you were well matched to raise some pebbles of your own soon. Thoughts that were kept to themselves to not spook your timid selves while you found your footing, still thoughts of how adorable your pebbles could be began to run rampant while the photos were circulated through text messages.
Balin broke Thorin’s scowl halfway through their shift patting his back asking, “Today’s the big day huh?”
Thorin glanced at him, “Meaning?”
Balin, “Back to the hotel.”
Thorin nodded in a deep sigh, “Yes. Four hours of sleep a night four days a week.”
Dwalin said, “Well you did say she’ll have an in home studio.” That had Thorin glance at him, “Meaning, she could always record some to add to those days.”
Balin, “Not to mention she could very well be due for a bump up to an overseeing job soon enough. Could manage the girls instead of the full twelve hour shifts.”
Dwalin nodded, “Dis will settle things.”
Thorin, “She likes the job, misses it. I can tell when she just made up the guest beds we have now. I don’t want to force her out of something she would miss just because I feel jealous of how long she’s away when she’s spectacular at it.”
Balin, “It will work.”
Thorin shook his head, “I don’t doubt that. Even have a lunch prepped for her. I figure I keep breakfasts ready for when she gets home and I have lunches here then it could work out well. She could see that I am determined to get this to work on her terms.”
Dwalin patted his back, “She will be more than grateful for your efforts.”
Comforting comments and ways the pair could help, including possibly working to give him Thursdays off, a list was drafted for consideration. Another downright scandalous introduction of an Elven Lord to the tale had the listeners puzzled until it unfolded tangling with the rest of the tale in your usual abstract way not revealed until the last moment.
.
The sound of your engine had eyes shifting upwards and to your usual table at a point from Balin you strolled through the back to the office, in which Thorin was unstacking a packed lunch he had fixed up for the both of you. With a soft blush creeping across your cheeks you walked over and hopped up onto the seat crossing your ankles saying, “You made lunch.”
“Yes I did. You need to eat for your first day back.” After a moment he said, “And yes, I did have to.”
Inhaling again you lifted the fork he slid closer to you on a napkin while Dwalin came over with a pair of mugs. A picture taken of the drink and into the meal you focused on and listened to him saying, “Since the first is tomorrow and you have the information for the rent I was thinking I write you a check for my half and you do the wire transfer, then I can just pay the trash fee online.”
You nodded, “Sounds good. I was wondering about that, I already did have the transfer preset in my account monthly. It would make things easier.”
“That’s good then.”
“Um, I have the house papers in my study under the tin shaped like a house. Should have the details for the trash fee there.” The conversation bled on into what you might think up for the weekend to possibly do, a mention of a possible dinner by you seemed to stun him entirely. But he broke out of it to bring up maybe heading to the ax throwing place for another group outing possibly. For nearly an hour the chatter continued cut off with the alarm on your phone signaling his cleaning up to show you out the back to wave you off for your drive across the bridge back to the Findis hotel.
.
Pulling into the back entrance to the employee garage you followed the biking lane and parked hearing a few of the Dams you worked with calling out your name. Flashing them a wave you waited for them to hurry over to walk in with you. “Pear, how are you doing?”
Another asked, “We heard about your Adad’s death. Are you doing well?”
You nodded saying, “Yes, much better now.”
After a point to the helmet in your hand another asked, “You have a scooter now?”
“Yes, I was able to juggle some funds. And I got a good deal. Pretty useful past rainy or overly gusty days.”
The first chuckled saying, “I can imagine it would be better than taking the train everyday. And it suits you.”
The second nodded, “Yes, and after a rough patch you certainly deserve to spoil yourself.”
“I hope it hasn’t been too rough on extra shifts without me.”
They shook their heads but the third said, “No, though we are thrilled to have you back. There have been whispers regulars on your floors miss your personal touch.”
.
Tumblr media
Like a glove you wiggled back into your cleaned uniform and into a braided bun your hair was wound and secured by the hair pins secured by bead coated bands. With old cart back to your usual route grinning to your mp3 player’s usual play list for you while you worked. Upon completing your final room before lunch with ten minutes to spare you exited your room to find Tili outside with a grin, “Evening.”
“Yes, good evening.”
“I see you’re right back to your old groove.”
“Yes, not that hard to. I am grateful for the time off, but I am glad to be back.”
She chuckled saying, “Your next room after lunch has four clients in it so Vili will be ready to handle your evaluation to get that out of the way. Then you can jump back into your second room and the next shift can cover the first room when they check out.”
“Sure, copper floor, right?”
“Yes, though Vili will be down to show you up.”
“Ok.”
Her grin eased out more and she asked, “We heard about you and Thorin minding pebbles over your weekend, did you get enough sleep?”
You nodded, “They were very well behaved. Though Thorin is helpless with bubbles.”
She giggled walking with you as you pushed your cart back to their holding area, “Yes, he is. We heard you took to them right away.”
Softly you giggled saying, “I have watched my sisters for vacations before, same with my friend’s twin boys. A pair of infants doesn’t phase me. So Balin’s wife shouldn’t be worried about asking to have sitters the closer she gets.”
That had Tili pausing fully when you entered the lift to face you, “Closer to what?” Her brows inched up in her asking, “She’s pregnant?!”
“I really have to stop ruining pregnancy announcements.” You muttered to yourself.
“No, no, no, we have a wine tasting this week. You caught a pregnant feel from her?”
“Well, ya. I thought you all knew, why they brought Billi over so she could just focus on her family business.”
“Who else is pregnant?”
“Um, I don’t know who you know is pregnant.”
“Mili?”
“I didn’t think she was married.”
“She’s not yet, at least.”
“Well she’s not.”
Tili, “We know Gorgo is, she had her latest sonogram on her break. Diaa?”
“Not, that, I could tell. There were some at the family thing, don’t know their names, other than Dis.”
She let out a playful gasp, “Dis’ pregnant?!”
With a smirk you replied in her giggle, “Funny.”
“It is a wonderful thing that radar of yours.”
“Not really, second pregnancy this month I’ve spoiled.”
“Who else is pregnant?”
“Zeqbe,” Her lips parted, “She came to talk to Thorin, couple weeks now, back when it was gusty. Wanted to talk to Thorin alone.”
“I hope he turned her down.”
“He did. She wasn’t happy about it though even with the news.”
She looked you over, “She didn’t bother you?”
You shook your head, “No, though Thorin and everybody seems to assume it would.”
“You, wouldn’t, be jealous, at all? For her past connection to him?”
Looking up at her again you said, “They dated back in college, guessing on the time frame, from what I’ve gathered. Obviously an idiot leaving Thorin for the Muffin Man.”
With a snorting giggle she joined you out of the lift giggling out, “Yes.”
“Can’t be jealous of someone who is unfaithful anyways. Besides if you want to get technical our families are in wedding prep mode so if you want to get cocky what’s to worry about there.” The last sentence had a quite nervous squeak to it making her brow arch up.
“You said both families?” you looked up at her, “Your family is setting a date?”
“No dates yet, any sort of date really. I mean we went to a go kart place with the boys and Mal with Frerin as guard or buffer or whatever term he used, but I’m not sure if that was a ‘date’ date or if it was a ‘hey let’s go have a fun racing day’ sort of outing.” In parking your cart you sighed and caught her eye saying, “It may be too much to share but I’m sort of at odds with knowing what to expect through this sort of limbo spot. I don’t know if it’s meant to be grey area or if it’s supposed to be blunt without question, ‘hey dinner tonight get ready for our date.’ Call me old fashioned-,”
“Dwarves are very old fashioned.”
“And I know everyone says ‘time’ over and over again, just,” you rolled your eyes, and blew a raspberry making her chuckle joining you for your turn to clock out for lunch. “I mean did your husband just limbo his way?”
She giggled again, “I went to his house and sat down with his parents giving them my papers of courtship.”
“Contract, right. I might just have to do that, get it in writing. Me, him and a witnessing notary setting a dinner date.” Making her giggle again, “I’m not making fun-,”
She shook her head, “Sad to say that would be terribly romantic for a Dwarf.”
“I don’t know, it’s just we made collages of pictures,” deepening her grin at your grin at her, “And him and Dwalin hung them up on the wall of the living room, and we just seemed so couply. Then just the babies showed up and it was feedings, art time, play time, bath time bubble wars, bedtime stories and he’d have such adorable babies.” The last sentence said with a sigh as you both sat down at the table of your choosing for the lunch she had already intended to join you on. You shook your head, “Just odd. You read about courtships that say they’re not simple, then listen to people and it gets even more jumbled then you just plop a person you end up binding into a betrothal with and it gets rough even without clan obligations or cultural traditions.” With a grin you gave your orders and then you glanced at her again after she had given hers.
“Though your friends I hear were quite helpful in simplifying matters.” You nodded, “Elopements are much simpler for cross clans and races to unify. It sounds rather lovely, a private ceremony for you both and a courthouse stop for you and a demonstration for our clan around your clan’s traditions for the reception that we could easily work into a two or three day thing to fit it all smoothly. It will be lovely whenever it does happen, though I will say if Thorin is hanging pictures of you both in couply ways it should be soon. The contract was handled marvelously and the home is settling for the both of you nicely. Common areas, guest rooms, you are settling into patterns and even your Ravens are settled somewhat.”
“Yup, getting there.”
“What sort of date do you have in mind?”
“Um, well we did talk earlier, actually on the trip to Helm’s Deep we talked about an ax throwing place, earlier before work we talked about maybe going this weekend.”
“Sounds like fun,”
“Though he hinted it might be a group thing again. If we did have an actual date date would it have to be supervised?”
“No, that would be entirely different. The guard would be there for your comfort easing into a date,”
“So a pre-non-date, date then?”
Making her giggle again and answer, “It would seem so. We all do empathize with your irritation though. We have all been there.”
More date options were shared through the meal as well as possible times over the weekends or Thursdays that you could all plan a girls day of sorts to keep up with the progress. When your table was cleared you watched the blonde pair switching off watch of you and following Vili once you had clocked in again you joined him for the lift ride up to the copper floor of offices. From the loveseat with your legs sideways and ankles crossed you watched him settle into his chair and start to go section by section through your eval ending with a raise bumping your pay to 19.5 an hour. A small bump but tolerated by you for not being too extravagant contrary to the hope of the blonde across from you.
 * A few hours prior with Thorin *
Huffing in his step back into your home on his first afternoon alone Thorin hung up his coat and on his way to his room to change he stopped and turned to look at your guest rooms seeing one of your dresser kits just sitting there. The grin on your face was just addictive when your pride swelled in completing more of your ideas for the full design for each guest room. Nodding to himself he turned to fetch your tool chest from the garage he returned with to cut open the kit and while chatting with Roac he assembled it and finished by sliding it right where you wanted it. Pausing only mid construction to grumble at the sound of a roll of thunder passing over the house hinting that you would possibly be riding home in drizzle at minimum if it hadn’t passed by then,
Suppertime rolled around and at the table he had his laptop out with a notepad to get a full run of his financials. The rent check was written out easily along with a simple e-payment for the trash he marked off his list on his haphazard calendar of expenses. Then he eyed his just dusty growing accounts from his various investments already granting him a hefty surplus of cash without even counting those from his trust and again with another loud crash of thunder he switched over to a website for a family friend’s car dealership.
Cleaning up early he grumbled his way to bed once he’d ensured the house was locked up still to be up in time to greet you with a warm meal on the table.
 *
Inside your garage you shivered off the chill coming before another round of drizzle creeping in that you had just barely missed leaving your helmet on your scooter closing the rolling door behind you as you reached the door to head inside the house. Instantly the warm home wafting of fresh cooked soup and grilled cheese had you hanging up your bag, leaving your shoes by the door, and following the scent to the kitchen. Shirtless Thorin with a drooping bun had you frozen a moment until he turned flashing you a sleepy grin.
Lowly he rumbled, “Must be cold, come warm up.” Onto the seat beside his you sat down in his asking, “Today go well?”
“Ya, had a talk with Tili, sort of let out that Balin’s got another pebble on the way,” that had Thorin’s eyes flinching wider at you, “And then Vili did my eval and gave me a raise, just a buck fifty, which I think he did well in restraining himself from rising higher.” Looking at him you said, “She no doubt spread the word and you will be hearing confirmation in a few days. Sorry, I know you’re tired. Thank you for making food.”
He shook his head, “No need to thank me. I thought it would help you get some sleep. I have a scramble in the slow cooker we can have in sandwiches for breakfast before heading off to work again.”
“That’s-,”
“I want to, and you can’t stop me.” That had you smirking at him making him chuckle and easing your spoon closer to your hand, “Eat up, then off to bed.”
“How was your day?” You asked lifting a sandwich to dip into your soup you then took a bite of.
“Work ended well, after that came home and I put together one of the dressers for the white/orange room.” You looked at him again with a mouthful of food. “I figured I could help you out with some heavy lifting at least.”
In a nod you continued eating easing his worries greatly while he shared on the check for you and that he had paid the trash fee already while hinting that his finances were secured and no strain was put on them by paying the bills. On your way to bed once the bowls were cleared you added the check to your wallet, thanking him again in your goodnights.
The scramble was excellent and dressed a bit warmer in jeans and a sweater with the sleeves you tugged up uncertain if it might get chilly again on your ride home from the hotel like it was the night before crossing that bridge. Waving each other off you went off separately, him for his shop while you stopped at the atm on the way to deposit the check.
 *
“She told you?” Balin just about sniffled out with a wide grin. Upon seeing Thorin in the shop already. Hugs were traded and Dwalin less than gracefully wept a bit at the expanding line of Fundin hopefully to be added by a surrogate aided Durin from him to join Frodo in a year or so. The lot of the family that the news had exploded through were grateful to have another birthing celebration to plan with your warning to the surprisingly late term pregnancy evening out when Dis was due.
Along with baby news plans for the ax throwing place had brought the boys and Frerin to join in along with Dis and Vili who jumped at the chance to have dinner with you all to keep things going after Tili had shared a hint of a nudge being necessary on your behalf. The other dates had been sorted through by the guys who had also tried to shuffle more serious ones up front to his attention hoping to keep him moving forward as well and not coasting now that you were sharing a home.
Your lunch however had a hug stolen by both brothers thanking you for alerting them to their unnoticed treasure hidden right in front of their noses before leaving you to just Thorin’s company. Food led to joint lounging in a spilling of thoughts on the day so far including an obnoxious proposal in your station nearly interrupting your show had Mal not snuck out of the booth to shoo them to a different floor with the mini parade.
Off again you went and Thorin pulled out his phone checking the time, after confirming to the pair he was on his way to meet up with Frerin he drove home, parking in the garage he closed behind him to stroll through the neighborhood park to get to Frerin’s place. On foot Frerin eyed his brother arriving and he asked, “Run out of gas?”
Thorin shook his head, “No, after this could you give me a ride?” Frerin’s brow inched up and he said, “Surprise for Mafioso.”
Frerin smirked saying, “One condition.” Watching the crew unloading the last of the wood for the shelving systems they were installing through the house.
Thorin rumbled back, “This should be good.”
Making Frerin rumble back playfully, “Start calling her your Mafioso.” Thorin glanced at him and he shrugged, “Otherwise my car just might need to have the tires rotated.”
Thorin huffed and he grumbled back, “Fine.”
Frerin smirked victoriously, “So what are we buying my dear Sister?”
“Made a call to Hleronc, picked out a car.”
“Car for who?” Frerin teased making Thorin roll his eyes.
Almost gravely he replied, “My Mafioso.”
Widely grinning he asked, “And how do you plan to break this news to Sis?”
Thorin inhaled then stated, “I was just going to park it in the garage.”
Frerin laughed and smoothed his hand over his eyes, “Bold approach. Very bold.”
Thorin, “I’m not demanding she use it everyday, just if it’s going to rain or it’s windy she has a backup plan.” Frerin caught his eye in lowering his hand in another creeping smirk, “I just want, my Mafioso, to be safe.”
“Don’t we all. Which car?” Thorin smirked pulling out his phone with the image in the messages he had been trading with their friend to hold the car and get it ready for purchase so he could just sign the printed forms he had filled out virtually and hand off the check then drive it off the lot. Frerin gave an approving whistle and rumbled, “Nice, good safety ratings too, cute and sporty, sits well next to yours. Great choice.”
“Here’s to hoping she doesn’t throw anything at me.”
“Doubt she’s the type. Might be a bit huffy at first but she’ll be thankful once it rains again. Set to be another wet spring.”
.
Tumblr media
The shelving didn’t take nearly as long as Thorin had guessed by the initial view on things and within two hours the duo was locking up the house to climb into Frerin’s sports car to head off to the dealership. The drive didn’t take long though upon driving up they spotted their friend grinning on the curb outside the glass wrapped building moving closer when they had parked and started their walk over to the mint sports car parked next to the curb ready to go.
“No offence but when you said you were in the market for something sporty I pictured something, well, larger at least Oakenshield.”
Smirking at his friend he shook hands with upon reaching the car’s hood he replied, “It’s a gift for my betrothed.”
That dropped Hleronc’s jaw, “Betrothed? When did this happen?”
“Not long now, still new, just moved into her home.”
Smirking as the brothers looked over the car carefully Hleronc asked, “She didn’t want to come herself?”
Frerin, “She’s at work.”
Thorin, “Besides, she has a scooter, I just really want something for her to choose if the weather is a bit more unforgiving. As it has been.”
Hleronc nodded, “Fair point. Well you chose a sturdy little number for her. I am guessing she’s smaller than you, by the size?” Frerin nodded gesturing at his shoulder making Hleronc smirk at the adorably petite size of his friend’s betrothed.
Thorin, “I like it, practically off the rack-,”
He nodded, “Yes, barely fifty miles on her. Fully checked by myself fluids, air levels and all. Ready for the road.”
Thorin nodded after a confirming glance at Frerin and said, “Let’s do the paperwork. I have cash.”
More friends inside greeted the pair ready to tease Thorin on his choice. Only to grow excited on the secret intended of their school friend they were all eager to set up a get together to meet said tiny heart throb who stole the heart of their normally sullen friend now grinning at the mere thought of a possible grateful hug at the extravagant and thoughtful gift. The check instantly after being scanned into the system cleared and the keys were passed over with the group smirking in watching Thorin heading out to squeeze his way into the waiting car. A shared glance had him saying, “Heading to the store next.”
Frerin nodded and followed behind smirking at his brother insisting on giving your car the test of the drive home. Yet at Bubbles and Barrels, the same shop Vili had boasted buying your roomba in to Frerin, the pair strolled and with a cart some new towels for Thorin’s room to replace the ratty ones he had been hiding from you he added new ones then led the way to the appliances straight for the waffle makers. Glancing from the wall of choices Frerin asked his brother, “In the mood for waffles?”
“The morning after we spooned in Helm’s Deep my Mafioso said if she ever refused waffles she was taken by body snatchers. If the car makes her angry I can at least have some waffles ready for her.”
Following a deep throated chuckle Frerin replied, “Clever, distract her with food. May take a couple thousand plates though.”
A notice of a work related task had Thorin heading home alone. Smirking his way through backing into your bare spot in the garage that he closed to head inside. In washing his towels he added the trays for the waffle maker he set on the counter into the dish washer then in a surge of helpful wishes he got started on the second dresser kit. Dinner alone to climbing into bed for his nap until you got home he was smiling wishing for the best, day dreaming countless reactions you might have even though he knew you might dig your heels in a bit at first.

Appalachian Anomaly
At the annual Table Rock Writers Workshop last week, our special guest was Emily Nunn, a native of southwest Virginia and author of The Comfort Food Diaries, published in 2017 by Simon & Schuster. Emily read from the memoir in which she discovers that comfort food is less about the dish and more about its preparation. Food can be a way to express the deepest care without saying a word. Cooking for others can be more comforting than eating itself.
After her presentation, Emily, who also created the “Table for Two” column in the New Yorker magazine when she worked there, revealed a recent discovery—a wood-fired pizza joint in an unlikely place—Roan Mountain, Tennessee, the little village at the base of the high peak that divides North Carolina and Tennessee. Back in the 19th century, the winding road to the top, then very narrow and precarious, allowed traffic in one direction (toward Tennessee) in the mornings and then became one way toward North Carolina in the afternoons. Hardscrabble mountain people made the passage on foot, by hack, and on horseback as they could.
Eventually, in 1894, a resort hotel called The Cloudland was built right on the state line near the peak at 6,286 feet. Travelers could rent rooms with spring mattresses, copper tubs, and steam heat for two dollars a night, a fee which also included three meals. The state line was painted on the dining room floor at the Cloudland, because those seated in Tennessee could order an alcoholic beverage to go with their meals, but those who were on the North Carolina side could not. The Mitchell County (NC) sheriff reportedly came often at dinnertime to patrol the border, hoping some of those imbibing in Tennessee might accidentally stumble across the state line into North Carolina, presumably then being forced to pay a fine as steep as the slopes of the Roan.
Anyway, I digress.
Emily’s report of the Roan Mountain pizza was so evocative that Donna Campbell and I set out at week’s end to sample it. I have reported here on Pie on the Mountain in Lansing, NC, and Big Ed’s Pizza in Oak Ridge, TN. Both restaurants feature righteously fresh ingredients, including the now-ubiquitous Benton’s Tennessee Bacon. However, the pinnacle of pizzas for me is in Carrboro, NC, where Gabe Barker--the son of James Beard Award-winning chefs Karen and Ben Barker--makes ten-inch Neapolitan miracles at his Pizzeria Mercato.
Gabe has developed a handcrafted thin yeast dough that blisters to perfection in his gas-fired oven. The Mercato toppings vary with the season--organic vegetables and meats from the Carrboro Farmer’s Market across the street and the finest imports of Castelvetrano olives, Italian cheeses, and dried Calabrian chiles. Gabe’s most sublime creation to date is a grilled sweet corn and Gorgonzola pizza topped with razor thin slices of Serrano pepper scattered sparsely enough to open the sinuses without numbing the tongue. But I digress again.
On the way to Tennessee Donna and I studied the Smoky Mountain Bakery’s online menu and agreed on the Gourmet Veggie and the Hiker’s Surprise.  All of their pizzas are more-or-less 12 inches and range in price from ten to twelve dollars with a maximum of twelve toppings.  When we arrived on Cloudland Drive, we couldn’t see the restaurant from the road, only a bank of sunflowers just beginning to bend toward autumn.

The sign out front
Ten years ago, Tim and Crystal Decker, both northern Californians and seasoned chefs, set up shop in a renovated barn to create this Appalachian anomaly.  He is a European-style artisanal bread maker and she is a pastry expert. Their son Anton, a musician, also takes a turn in the kitchen.
If Gabe Barker’s place in Carrboro is urban chic—concrete floors and recycled timber tables and benches—this place is shabby seventies. No frills, no fuss. A throwback to hippiedom.
Breakfast is still under way when we walk in, served until 10:45—omelets, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, Belgian waffles, and pastries. The pizza oven is blazing by 11:00. The line soon runs out the door, and inside you find yourself waiting amid stock storage—cardboard boxes piled high and to-go pizzas already stacked in boxes on a low bench for pick-up beside the cashier’s station. A glass cabinet holds cherry pinwheels, lemon crinkles, coconut macaroons, snicker doodles, blueberry scones, red velvet sandwich cookies filled with cream cheese, banana bran muffins, and little loaves of pumpkin bread laced with walnuts and cranberries. A sign above these treats reads: “Stressed is desserts spelled backwards.”  On the opposite wall, a metal baker’s rack on wheels is heaped with chocolate chip cookies and sweet rolls in plastic bags to go.
Eight young people are navigating around the flour-covered worktable in the kitchen. Two are rolling out dough, another is chopping toppings. Another slathers on tomato sauce while the young man closest to the hot maw of the oven wields the pizza shovel with grace. The rest take turns taking orders and swiping credit cards through nothing more than an iPhone.
Down the line, salads of frisee, mesclun mix, luscious cherry tomatoes, and random red beans sit in closed clam shells on refrigerator shelves for the taking. Three bucks per salad or two for five, DIY. Commercial dressings, however, come sealed in packets at the ordering window—the only disappointment, as it turns out. On down the line, self-serve fountain drinks with free refills are two dollars. There are a few tables inside; many more outside on the wrap around deck.
We place our order, take a number, and find communal benches at a long picnic table out back in sunlight dappled by a half-dozen black walnut trees towering over two sides of the deck. There is a vegetable garden, now waning, in the sideyard. Trees up the hill beyond are rounded sculptures of kudzu. Tendrils trail down and wave in the breeze. A sudden waft of woodsmoke heightens my appetite. We prepare with paper plates, napkins, plastic cutlery, and condiments, including red chile flakes and a shaker of parmesan that doesn’t taste like sawdust. All of these acoutrements are anchored against the wind in plastic bins on each table.  The service is surprisingly quick.
Tumblr media
Gourmet Veggie and Hiker’s Surprise. All photos by Donna Campbell
The Gourmet Veggie pie comes first--backroad-Italian rustic—chunky onions, generous bites of artichoke, a heavy hand of cheese.  Yet, the dominant taste is salty black Kalamata olives and sweet sundried tomatoes—both flavors intensified by the oven’s heat.  I suspect the tomatoes are local and dried on the premises. Fantastic.
Next out, the Hiker’s Surprise lives up to its name immediately. What is that crunch?  Besides the saltine-like crust, there are deliciously browned chunks of walnut. Wow. The walnut pieces have been laid down on a light brush of pesto and then slyly covered by slabs of mushroom, more sun-dried tomatoes and caramelized onions, and the silky melt of Gorgonzola. The only thing I can imagine that might add to this magic is a handful of sliced red grapes spread and roasted over the top. (I mention this addition only to work in another  pizza joint recommendation in Fayetteville, West Virginia, near the New River Gorge. Pies and Pints is the name—Gorgonzola and Grape is the pizza’s appelation.)
So, Miss Emily Nunn, you do not disappoint. These pizzas are a rare find, an unusual amalgam of flavors in an even more unlikely place. But as you told us last week at the writing workshop, the comfort often comes in the odd mix at the table. Or as she put it near the end of her book:
“Luckily, I had figured out that life was not a banquet at all but a potluck. A party celebrating nothing but the desire to be together, where everyone brings what they have, what they are able to at any given time, and it is accepted with equal love and equanimity.”
That’s how it was for us at the writing workshop--sharing what we had brought unvarnished, both our manuscripts and our personal stories, mostly told at table when we stopped long enough to eat. And so it was at this Appalachian anomaly—Californians making pizzas and pastries on the side of an ancient mountain. We declared our gratitude in the moment, delighting in the many tastes unfolding, bite after bite, on a not-exactly-round but satisfying crust.

Persulfates Market Challenges
Health effects
Allergic reactions, irritations, and rhinitis associated with cosmetic products made from ammonium persulfate are anticipated to restrict the growth of ammonia persulfates to some extent. Precautionary measures are needed to be taken care of during the handling, storage, and disposal of persulfate compounds as they pose health hazards. Issues related to handling, storage, and transportation of persulfates is anticipated to hinder the growth of persulfates to some extent. Persulfates exposure in dust form might cause irritation in throat, lungs, nose eyes and skin. Prolonged exposure may lead to breathing issues leading to asthmatic effects.
Persulfates are slightly irritating to the human skin at higher concentrations. They cause irritation to the human skin and the respiratory tract of occupationally exposed individuals. Therefore, their usage is regulated in developed countries such as the U.S. The toxicity of potassium persulfates is mild, but continuous exposure to them can cause negative effects on human health. Peracetic Acid Market Trends, Opportunities, Size, Share, Growth, Analysis and Forecast till 2025
August 03, 2021: Global Peracetic Acid Market is expected to grow considerably in the years to come owing to the increase in demand from food and beverage industry majorly. Peracetic acid, also known as Peroxyacetic acid (PAA) is a powerful oxidizing sanitizer. It reacts with several metals and other contact bases like aluminum, tin-plated iron, and stainless steel but galvanized iron, plain steel, copper, bronze, and brass, are prone to corrosion and reaction.
Growing applications of peracetic acid in several industries like food and beverage are the major drivers of peracetic acid market. Peracetic acid initially gained popularity from the United States (FDA) Food and Drug Administration as safe chemical and antimicrobial for food preservation. This introduced numerous other application of peracetic acid as microbial disinfectants and food preservatives in the recent years.
The acid is extensively used in food industry as preservative for poultry, fisheries and meat items. Additionally, increase in the demand of peracetic acid in several beverages processing is also influencing the growth of peracetic acid industry. Developments in manufacturing technology, innovative techniques for using peracetic acid in wide applications and growing acceptance of bio-based chemicals is expected to introduce new opportunities in peracetic market in the years to come. Conversely, direct exposure of peracetic acid can cause allergy, burns and other hazardous infection to eyes, skin and respiratory organs. If the acid is consumed in high concentrations, the effects could be more dangerous. Altogether, peracetic acid is restricting its approval in household applications, which hampers the growth of peracetic market.
Developments and advancements in chemical products has resulted the horticulture industries to turn more cautious for checking microbial safety, which has promoted the application of peracetic acid in agriculture. With the use of concentrated peracetic acid, the overall price can be brought down for application in pulp and paper segment. However, the health hazards related to incessant exposure to product can obstruct the growth of the market.
Peracetic acid industry is categorized on the basis of product, application, and geography. On the basis of product, the industry is divided into solution grade and distilled grade. Sulfuric acid is commonly used due to which it is predicted to lead peracetic acid market in the years to come.
On the basis of application, peracetic acid industry is split into sterilant, disinfectants, sanitizer and others. Disinfectants segment is expected to register significant growth in future since it is widely used in industries like food and beverage, water treatment, healthcare, pulp and paper. This is followed by sterilant and sanitizer industry.
Geographically, the industry is segmented as North America, Latin America, Asia Pacific, Europe, and Middle East & Africa. Europe is predicted to lead the market in the years to come owing to the growing demand. The key players in peracetic acid industry are Peroxychem, Evonik Industries, Kemira Chemicals, Seitz GMBH, Aditya Birla Chemicals, Ecolab, Solvay Chemicals, Mitsubishi Gas Chemicals, Enviro Tech Chemical Services, Christeyns, Promox S.P.A., and Helios Group among others.

Data Entry Solutions to Improve your Business Management
Decades and centuries back, the world run differently and the businesses functioned differently. However, the main crux always remained the same. No matter what the business the data was maintained in different forms. Back when paper was not invented, the data was recorded on metal and copper plates and inscribed on rocks or leaves. Once the paper was invented, the data was entered and stored into those. However, the paper’s shelf life is not that high hence, after every few decades, the same papers were rewritten so that the information can be stored for a longer period of time. This is how all the old scriptures etc. were written. Then came the computer age, where the computer systems were created and slowly people started shifting to this new technology. They were so awestruck with it that they started maintaining all the different kinds of data into it and as the time went by, computer systems replaced the handwritten ledgers and typewriters completely.
Tumblr media
Digitization also brought forth the much-needed internet to the market which made it easy to share and access documents in any part of the world. Entering data became even more easier than before and sharing the work too because everybody could finally leverage the internet and can access the data from anywhere in the world. Over the period of time, the data required to run a particular business or a company increased and so did the paperwork. Hence, we saw a significant increase in the demand for data entry requirements. There are a number of companies that offer these services. However, Datainox was one of the most preferred and well-known companies that used to provide excellent data entry services. Words with Katie Dutch
Tumblr media
“My art is about standing up for what I believe in and I’m very much into respect for women - women being empowered not being used etc.
I really find any injustice hard to take - when the strong take advantage of those weaker than them, from bullies to terrible abuse. I try to do art that makes others feel good, reminds them of beauty, history, fun etc but also my work has layers of meaning - some pieces touch on darker concerns but I don’t want to dwell on them & offer no hope.
… basically I’m about standing up for good, protecting others & nature, enjoying things that don’t harm others & offering hope/ a moment of joy”
-Katie Dutch
(All art displayed was created by Katie Dutch)
Katie Dutch has the most insightful imagination when it comes to producing a fine piece of art, worthy of display in any home or business.
What I enjoy most about Katie’s pieces is the way she incorporates that strong sense of feminine energy & compliments woman’s beauty and essence so respectfully and vibrantly in a manner that empowers woman & the classic beauties of our vibrant and ever changing world.
So enjoy a cold drink and the humble words of Katie Dutch the artist, the creative & one of many talented Australian artist on the rise, much love
Tumblr media
Hey Katie thanks heaps for taking the time to share words you’re a really inspiring artist . How about we start with a few basics and get to know you a little better,
Favourite Artists: Picasso, Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol, Joseph Cornell, Arthur Boyd, Jeffrey Smart & Tracey Emin
Favourite Movie: I love so many - I really like action movies like Terminator etc, Fight Club, True Romance, Mad Max, Blade Runner - the list goes on & on and includes Shawshank Redemption. I get a lot of my ideas from movies and love being told a good story paired with great visuals
Favourite place to relax: At home doing art, running with loud music in my ears and the beach when no one else is there.
A childhood memory that impacted the art that you currently create: Travelling with my family in a double decker bus, living in the bush in a mud house with no electricity, hens, animals etc and listening to my dad sing & play guitar - the lyrics painted pictures in my mind.
What inspires you to continue creating: For the above reason it’s great therapy, a way to work through ideas or things that concern me. I get very passionate about things I see as unjust and art is my voice. The drive to have a say and also the enjoyment I get from creating & connecting with others pushes me to keep going. Sometimes doing art can be disheartening as it’s a lots of energy and expense with seemingly little monetary gain but I can’t seem to stop!
Favourite way to connect and calm before putting together your art pieces: Often I do the art to calm myself, I can get a little depressed or manic & either need a pick-me-up or calm-me-down, art is what grounds me and makes me focus. It’s a discipline that brings my mind some balance/ peace.
Favourite city or location: I would dearly love to travel and now that my son is nearly twelve, hopefully I can make this answer more exciting next time you ask. I grew up in Tasmania which is lovely. I’ve been to a few countries but I really want to see Cuba & Venice! (the wish list is long)
Biggest inspirations: My Sculpture & Printmaking teachers at the University of Tasmania. Now it’s music, movies, pop culture, fashion and looking on IG at everything from selfies to high art.
What you enjoy doing in your down time: I love to run and walk - wander around just looking & thinking. Ideally I would love adventures, jumping out of planes, climbing tall mountains, deep sea diving, big wave surfing etc.
Views on current media news at moment: I watch a lot of current event programs and I’m interested in politics and world issues. I’ll reframe from giving my personal views. Over-all I’m very grateful to live in Australia, our system is far from perfect but compared to most places on earth it’s a great place to be. I could write a six page essay but will stay neutral and let my art talk for me. That said I hate injustice, corruption, cruelty, greed, the environment being ruined…. I’d better stop :)
Tumblr media
Thanks for that Katie, so how about we start from the beginning, have you always been a bit of and artist? And has there been any other forms of art you’ve created or worked on before heading towards your current collage works?
When I was little I was always daydreaming, dressing up & making tree houses. I’ve always had a big imagination and loved to draw and make things. I would say art was always my favourite subject at  school and I enjoyed being OK at it, as I found reading and spelling hard. I did a Fine Arts Degree at the University of Tasmania and majored in Sculpture & Printing making. I really enjoy sculpture & etching but collage is a much quicker medium for IG and having a daily say. I often have a point to make, regardless of if others see/ understand it and I can make a collage within three - six hours whereas a sculpture or copper plate etch takes me months for one piece. Collage is a quick way to have a say or respond to a recent thought, event, concern or inspiration.
What inspires you to continue creating:
For the above reason it’s great therapy, a way to work through ideas or things that concern me.
How do you go about creating your pieces? I’ve always wondered how you put your marvels together they’re so beautiful, do you use digital prints at all or is it all usually free hand creations?
My collages are made from real paper & paint. I wish I knew how to use Photoshop etc  but apart from some apps/ filters added to the final scanned image they are hand made. I make them by hand with a number of cut out images, then add some paint & details, then scan the collage for IG.
Where do you draw all your inspiration from when you came up with your particular style per say and how long have you been working on such collage pieces?
I haven’t really stopped working on creative ideas for the last 20 years. My skills & ideas are limited so I have to work hard. At times I’ve needed a break and had a few months off but I always come back to creating. I would love to discover what makes a successful & impacting image. There are so many images now that to come up with a style that stands out & impacts people is hard (maybe impossible for me - but I’ll try). I probably spend about 18 hours a day thinking about art & nine - eighteen hours doing it. This intensity has just been over the last year and a half but in the past I’ve also put in a lot of time.

Aspects of your pieces that I really love are how you incorporate what I like to call "vintage memories” or flashback moments within your art ie in one of your pieces you paint the Emerald City from the classic Wizard of Oz, in another Falcore from The Never Ending Story and also through out your pieces many other elements which just shout 1950s/60s vibes, beautiful really as I’m also a lover of vintage trinkets myself.. What draws you to that particular time and style and on a random note what are some of your favourite places to shop or source your vintage materials or trinkets around Sydney or online?
I have a huge collection of vintage ‘treasure’. I have not bought anything for about two years as I have far too much stuff. However in the past I was always at op shops, markets, looking in council clean-up etc etc Always collecting little vintage bits & pieces to make my sculptures and give me ideas. I also have a huge collection of antique paper & I traded Victorian trade cards & die cuts for a number of years. I love the memories vintage pieces inspire and the feeling you get from seeing an old childhood favourite movie or toy. I want to inspire that feeling or memory when people view my art - that magic time/ of being in the moment.
I discovered your art through Instagram and was blown away the first time I saw one of your posts that incorporated Buddha, I remember running to show my flat mate your art as she is also an artist like yourself, we were so impressed from first glance, really inspiring stuff as I’m sure you hear all the time :) in regards to your online postings, how do you feel Instagram has helped you get your art form out there a viewed and what would you say to other artists striving to get there piecesand heard online or beyond?
IG is a great way to connect with others and give & get encouragement but it’s very hard to make it pay. However it’s a great way to get your art viewed by people all around the world, which is very cool!
It’s hard work to be self motivated which you really need to be as a creative person. You have to have motivation other than fame and fortune as there is a very good chance it will never arrive. My motivation is I enjoy it, it’s therapy, my voice and I believe in helping/ trying to inspire others. Hopefully I can inspire a few people and in return they inspire others - keep the good vibes rolling!
You also have another page dedicated to  more personal posts & your side interest photography called for_ever_free which also expresses your unique & talented ways could you share a little bit about that page and your favourite memories in regards to it? You share family photos too which are also sweet, how do you feel you family impacts the art you create and is your family on the arty side as well?
I wish I could take a decent photo but thanks for calling my humble snaps photography. I started to feel very limited with doing just collage and when I added selfies or personal photos to kitscheart I noticed some people unfollowed or didn’t get it. I felt pressured to do what people wanted and considered leaving IG. Then I realised I could open another account and do what I wanted. It made me love the collage again and gave me a visual space to work through ideas and get feedback from like-minded people & friends. My Dad and sister where at Art School with me. My other sister & my brother are also very creative. My mum is a legend who helps look after me & my son while I create - she encourages.
In your spare time away from your art what do you also enjoy doing? Are there any places on the Northern Beaches or around Sydney that you would recommend we all check out nature wise or treat wise?
Yes this area of Sydney is awesome - Visitors should go to Palm Beach, walk to the lighthouse and have a coffee at the Boathouse. Actually all the beaches around here are great and a ferry ride from Manly to the City is wonderful. Once there it’s a short walk to a number of galleries and the beautiful Botanical Gardens
Do you have a favourite quote or saying that you feel really sticks and motivates you in regards to life in general?
Sometimes when it all seems to hard I say to myself 'Make pain your friend’! Basically be tough and keep going regardless and try to stay young at heart. And I really believe in doing to others what you want done to you.. 'Do unto others…’ And I try very hard to forgive others and no get old and bitter - to understand & see the bigger picture… hard to do but worth a go.

You come across as a rather spiritual and intune lady which is why I feel I’m also so drawn to your art and art style, if so which elements of spirituality to you follow or incorporate into your day to day living?
I’m always thinking about the great beyond and my inspiration and drive certainly comes from a belief in something bigger than myself and the physical. Like politics I’d rather let the art talk - I find talking about politics and religion gets me into trouble and it’s hard to convey in a few sentences. However your observations are correct and the spiritual side of existence is highly important to me & of more value than material wealth (for me).
Back on topic in regards to your photography, your landscape shots really portray a lovely vibe and seem to share a lot in regards to your persona, I sense your very intune with your environment and enjoy the outdoors does your son get involved
On your journeys when you take landscape photos or do you tend to trek it alone? Does your journeys inspire a lot of your art and help trigger your imagination?
Yes I love the outdoors and as a child and teenager was always outdoors and in the water. I love bush walking, rock climbing etc - although since having my son I’ve been less adventurous due to circumstances. My son enjoys the outdoor but he is at the age where he doesn’t really want to go walking with me unless we’re on holiday. So for my IG photos I’m mainly off by myself, walking & thinking. The photos I take certainly inspire my art, the colour of the sky, shape of the clouds etc
We love to embrace culture, arts, spirituality & music here at beatsfortheill as we feel such areas provide such a beautiful ground for growth and expression, would you care to share your favourite topics/musical talents & spiritual leaders in these areas?
I have always struggled to find earthly heros. So often when I look up to someone or the world tells me they are great/ winners/ a guru I find out later they are just a flawed but talented human - and I get disappointed. That said I don’t want to sound negative. Some of the best people are not well know, they go through life quietly helping others or the environment. I like humble, real people who sacrifice a lot, not for recognition or fame but to make a difference. For that reason I don’t have a list but in saying that there are many talented people I respect & try and learn from - I just also know they are human like the rest of us.
In regards to Instagram do you have any other fellow pages or artists you could recommend others check out? What do you enjoy checking out over the inter web?
As above I love following real people, people with heart & soul. I love seeing great art & musicians online too. However I find they’re so popular that they don’t have time to respond or notice others. As an artist I really enjoy feedback & banter with people as it helps with ideas & is fun. I recommend following people on IG who encourage & inspire you, that will be different for everyone. A mix of friends & people who push you forward

In regards to your makeup art & leg art what started it all of for you and how did you get into it?
Good question - I was probably frustrated or having a bad day and got the paint out and started throwing it at myself.
I also look at so many other artists and images, that probably triggered the idea. I’m actually very shy in real life and would never wear a bikini to the beach! So it’s fun to express myself with paint, it’s art therapy!
I know it must be hard to talk about your talent so openly but I just want to say what you’re doing is really inspiring, a lot of Australian and international artists/art appreciators far and wide are really feeling on what you’re creating, what do you have to say to all your followers in regards to your art & what are some inspiring last words you would like to share with our followers here at beatsfortheill?
Truly I’m very humble that you like my art, it means a lot. Doing art can be awesome & disheartening all on the same day. However to succeeded  you have to keep going even when it seems impossible or the world doesn’t seem to care or see. I encourage others to have self belief and work very hard and then work some more. I’m still hoping the lucky part turns up because after the hard work & self belief you still need a little luck (I think). If I never make it I still aim to be kind and encourage others to reach their potential. Art is a vehicle to inspire beauty, thought, hope and maybe change for the better. It’s not really a means to glory and wealth for self if it is I’m doing it wrong (ha ha).

Prompt: I don’t rightly remember, but I know it didn’t have anything to do with what I wrote… Pairing: Fakir x Ahiru For: @doggy-yasha (look what you made me do! @-@) Word Count: 2170
I have no title for this story yet, and I’m really bad with names so feel free to suggest suitable names if you’d like.
Chapter One
Once upon a time there was an old man who lived in a castle.    He loved stories. Epic stories. Fanciful Stories. Tragic stories. He loved them so much he decided to create his own. Normally this would not pose much of a problem. He was not, however, a normal man. One by one the old man’s stories began to come true. As the years went by, his stories spilled out of the castle and into the neighbouring town. People started to disappear or…change. Terrified for their safety, the townspeople killed the old man. The stories stopped. All was well for a time. But the old man had left something behind in the wake of his death… Alone. In his castle. — Fakir was upset. He was cold, tired and hopelessly lost. But mostly upset. It had been raining for the better part of a week now, with no sign of letting up. The man pulled his cloak tighter around himself as he continued his trudge through the thick mud that the road had become. He cursed the man who had given him directions in the last town he’d passed through. “You just follow this road down a couple miles, you can’t miss it!” Apparently he could. “You’ll come across a sign pointing you in the direction of the town from there.” There had been no sign. What there had been though was a fork in the road. No signage marked either direction. There had been no discernible difference to either path, each had just led through more forest. So Fakir took an educated guess and chose the path leading to the right. Which led him to his current and wet predicament. He had been on this same road for days with no town, no signs and no people in sight. The man grumbled to himself as he stopped once again to pull his boot out of the grasping mud with a splosh! ‘I’ve had it now. I’m going to get up this hill and then I’m going to go to sleep in the rain and if I wake up and it’s still raining I’m going to kill-wait, what’s that? Is that…’ A light. Fakir stared at his hungrily. It was close. Less than a mile, he thought. Gritting his teeth, he forced himself towards it. — Over an hour later Fakir stumbled into a small town. An actual. Freaking. Town. He could have kissed the ground in joy if it weren’t wet, muddy and entirely beneath his dignity. He followed the sounds of music and laughter to a building he could only assume was the local inn. He hoped he was correct. The building had a rather large picture of a laughing goat over the door. It was debatable. He stepped inside. The noise did not stop upon his arrival but there was a noticeable dim in overall sound. Ignoring the many pairs of eyes that followed him curiously, Fakir made his way over to the bar. A portly older man sporting a moustache was cleaning a glass with a dirty rag. He glanced up and gave the newcomer a once over before dipping his head to nod in greeting. Fakir returned the nod. “Good evening.” The bartender eyed him warily, “Can I help you, sir?” Fakir pulled his hood down and pushed wet hair out of his eyes in one smooth motion, “I need a room.” “Certainly. For how long will you be staying with us?” A gold coin slid across the bar top. “Indefinitely.” Fakir received a genuine smile from the bartender, “Welcome to Kinkan Town, mister…?” “Sir Lohengrin.” The man’s brows rose in surprise. His gaze dropped to the sword no longer hidden beneath layers of wet cloak. “You a knight, then?” Something flickered in the man’s dark dark eyes. “That’s right.” “Huh. Don’t remember the last time we had a knight in town…” He offered Fakir another smile,  which Fakir did not return. “Don’t rightly remember the last time we had a visitor neither. Enjoy your stay, Sir Knight. I’ll get Missy here to show you to your room.” Missy turned out to be a small, plump and overly flirtatious girl. He followed her up the stairs to a small warm room. Fakir pointedly ignored her offer to “warm his bed for him” and shut the door in her face. He sighed in relief. Making sure the door was securely locked, he set down his belongings, shed his damp clothing and fell into the soft, warm bed. — He woke to the smell of slightly charred bacon and sunlight. Though his belly rumbled in appreciation of the former, it was the latter that caught his attention. He rose and went to the tiny window, basking in the warmth that streamed through. He could see most of the town from here, as the inn was one of the only buildings with two stories; low houses, cobbled streets, greenery, and what was clearly the market district. And a wall. A rather large wall, in fact.
Fakir frowned. He didn’t remember passing through a gate to get into the town. Shaking his head, he turned from the window and stooped to retrieve his clothes. He grimaced; he really should have thought to lay them out properly last night. They were still very damp. He sighed and tugged them on reluctantly. At least it wasn’t raining anymore. — Once he was dressed and had stowed his belongings in the chest at the end of his bed (excepting, of course, his sword which he belted in place) he made his way downstairs and towards the heavenly smells it encompassed. Accepting a share of bacon and a small loaf of bread from a different serving girl (her name was Wendy, she told him shyly) he made his way over to an empty table to tuck in. As he ate, and oh it was good, he thought about his next move. He should get a lay of the land, figure out where exactly he was in relation to the town he had just come from. Really, he thought to himself disgustedly, how could I have gotten so lost? The man had been so sure of himself and his directions. And how did I miss that wall? This was the thought that bothered him the most, so much so that when Wendy came to take his empty plate away he startled her by grabbing her wrist. “Wendy.” “Y-yes?” “Why does your town have a wall that large around it?” Puzzled, she asked, “A wall?” “Yes, a wall. That huge thing that, by the looks of it, surrounds your entire town.” “There is no wall, sir.” She gave him another worried look, “Are you all right?” Fakir stared at her and slowly released her. “Yes, I’m fine. I must be mistaken…” Wendy nods and picks up his empty plate, backing away slowly. — Finished with his meal, and subsequent brooding, Fakir makes his way towards the marketplace. He weaves through the crowd for a while in search of something specific, ah, there it is. He walks up to a very large woman who is busy cross stitching what appears to be a tap dancing pig. He frowns at her nonsensical picture and clears his throat. The woman looks up from her work, looking nonplussed at the interruption. “What.” “Er…” The woman raises a brow at the knight, tapping her foot impatiently. “Have you got any maps for sale?” The woman eyes him, “Sure. Got one of the town here somewhere.” Fakir glances at the piles of rolled paper on her table. A hand flapped away his scrutiny, “Them’s just pictures.” The knight gives her a dubious look but waits patiently while she digs through them. She hands him a large scroll, which he immediately opens. A picture of Kinkan Town greets him, with cheery letters discerning the local shops and areas of interest. He turns back to the woman with a frown, “Do you have one of the surrounding area too?” The lady scoffs at him, “What do I look like, a map maker? That’s the best I got. If you want it, it’ll be two coppers.” Fakir swallows his annoyance and fishes out her money, which she took with undisguised glee. He must have been her only customer in a while. He glances back at her tap dancing pig. No wonder there. He spends another copper on a sausage and cheese pastry on his stroll back through the market, which tastes just about as heavenly as his earlier meal. He comes into the town square, and sat down in the greenery, under a large tree. He looks around to take in the shops, the market and the bustle of people as they made their way through both. A thought comes to him and he unrolling his new map, looking over the edges of the town. No wall there either. Fakir’s frown deepens. That doesn’t make any sense. Wendy didn’t seem to know what he was talking about either. He glanced up to confirm that the wall was still there. It was. Mystified, he shook his head and turned back to examine the map. The town took up most of the scroll, and seemed to be nestled in a small dense forest. There was even a lake. And a castle. A castle. How long has it been since I’ve stepped foot inside a cast- Fakir squelched the thought before it could take root. A castle, hm? He checked for its name but found nothing; it was unmarked. He’d never heard of any lordlings presiding over any land in this area before. Though he didn’t really know where this area was, so it could be possible that he was in a recognizable location after all. Fakir stared at the map. It did its best to stare back. Decision made, he rose with fluid grace. Tucking the map securely into his belt, he set off in the direction of the castle. — Well. It was a castle all right. Or rather, used to be. High dark walls with what looked like fire-char marking it, providing it with a much darker ambiance. Tall, narrow windows of stained glass. Some of the windows were broken completely, colourful shards of glass twinkled like gems in the unadulterated sunlight. Debris littered the expansive grounds, and Fakir picked his way cautiously through it to the steep steps of the main entrance. The double doors were still intact, dark and sturdy wood that gave grudgingly to the knights’ shoulder. “What happened here?” Fakir muttered to himself. There was more fire damage inside, the scorched rugs and blackened walls attested to that.   Despite the disaster the castle presented him with, Fakir felt a deep fascination with it. And a unconscious sense of familiarity. He spent the next couple hours exploring. He explored the many chambers, which turned out to be mostly intact. He explored the communal rooms, kitchen and the ballroom, with its wall of mirrors. He even doubled back to explore the grounds, which would have been lovely if not for the wreckage. He was following  a long narrow corridor and the events of a tapestry about an old man which concluded halfway in charred threads when he noticed the door. Had he missed one? Come to think of it, he didn’t remember seeing this hallway either in his first go-through. It was smaller than the others, and to his surprise had appeared to take no damage from the fire that had ravished the rest of the structure. He placed a hand upon it; it felt rough and solid beneath his fingers. Slowly he pushed the door open. Fakir stepped into a cozy and apparently lived-in room. A small fire was crackling merrily in the hearth, bathing the room in warm golden light. He took in the thick orange and gold rugs, the vanity table and attached mirror, and the tiny window that shed little light and appeared to overlook the surrounding forest. There was also a small four post bed with many blankets piled upon it haphazardly. It looks like a nest, Fakir thought to himself. And it was moving. The knight narrows his eyes as he inched cautiously closer to the bed, craning his neck to peer into the folds of cloth. It was a duck. Fakir blinked and frowned. A duck? What was it doing here? Why does it look like it… Lives here. Frowning, the man takes a closer look at the bird. It was small, he thought. Small and bright yellow. It was quacking in a muttering way as it shifted and settled around it’s perch. A single bright feather stuck up like a cowlick at the top of its head. Fakir snorted at the sight. The sound was enough to startle the duck, who turned its head quickly in the direction of the unfamiliar sound. Fakir froze as he met and held the ducks gaze, its eyes huge. Huge and blue. Fakir looked at the duck. The duck looked at Fakir. “Hello,” it said.
To be continued…
