60 years ago... Mercury 7 1963, October 21 the seven " Mercury 7 " astronauts pose for an end-of-program group photo with US Navy LtCmdr Scott Carpenter on the right. Note that, exactly 515 days after his "Aurora 7" mission, Carpenter wore an all black dial Breitling Navitimer replacement for his custom-made "Cosmonaute" which got damaged during splash-down & recovery operations in May 1962. MoonwatchUniverse has written a day-to-day account article showing that a launch delay due to a parachute hardware fault enabled Carpenter to receive the 1962 "Cosmonaute" in time to be worn as the first Swiss-made wrist watch in space! At this time, October 1963 the NASA astronaut office brainstormed about an official astronauts' chronograph and by October 1964 NASA had just received chronograph wrist watches from Hamilton, Longines-Wittnauer, Omega and Rolex for testing in order to determine which brand would become flight-qualified for their manned space program! Three decades after Carpenter’s Aurora 7 mission, Breitling chronographs returned to space as the “Chronomat”, “Cosmonaute” and “Chronospace” versions were worn by French cosmonauts (CNES spationautes) Michel Tognini (1992), Claudie André-Deshays (1996) and Léopold Eyharts (1998). C’est une petite araignée de marais qui vit sous l’eau à la manière d’un scaphandrier. Elle se construit entre les plantes aquatiques, une sorte de cloche à plongeur tissée de soie et imperméabilisée, qu’elle remplit d’air. Périodiquement l’argyronète remonte à la surface pour en rapporter de l’oxygène sous forme de petites bulles fixées –ne me demandez pas comment– aux poils de son abdomen. Elle s’en sert pour regonfler sa petite maison sous-marine dans laquelle elle vit, chasse à l’affût et élève sa progéniture. Chrétiens, prenons exemple sur cet ingénieux petit insecte. Nous sommes appelés à vivre, à travailler, à élever nos enfants dans un monde dont l’atmosphère morale est irrespirable. Il nous faut régulièrement faire surface, renouveler notre provision d’air céleste sans laquelle nous nous asphyxions. C’est la lecture régulière de la Bible et la prière qui maintiendront nos relations avec le ciel et nous donneront notre « dynamisme spirituel ». Que font les cosmonautes appelés à vivre quelques heures ou quelques jours en dehors de l’atmosphère terrestre ? Ils emportent leur air avec eux. Et en particulier, c’est ce que nous avons à faire chaque fois que nous nous trouvons malgré nous dans une compagnie douteuse. Prenons notre air avec nous. Et respirons-le. « Si donc vous avez été ressuscités avec Christ, cherchez les choses qui sont en haut, où Christ est assis à la droite de Dieu ; pensez aux choses qui sont en haut, non pas à celles qui sont sur la terre ; car vous êtes morts, et votre vie est cachée avec Christ en Dieu. » Colossiens 3 : 1-3. October 10...Remembering Malcolm Scott Carpenter 10 years ago, US Navy aviator, Cmdr, Aquanaut and Astronaut Scott Carpenter passed away aged 88. During the May 1962 "Aurora 7" mission, Carpenter became the first astronaut to wear a Swiss-made wrist watch in space: a custom-made Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute chronograph with all-black 24 hours dial.
