Favourite Colour: Purple but I wear a lot of blues and pinks.

Currently Reading: I’m always reading at least five books at one once because books are everything 💖 Right now, I’m in the middle of Safe by S.K. Barnett, Mergers and Acquistions by Cate Doty, Before She Dissappeared by Lisa Gardner and The Summer of Everything by Julian Winters. And of course, I’ve been reading reading lots of fanfictions for all types of fandoms and ships!!!

Last Song: “Brutal” by Olivia Rodrigo...but I’ve had her entire album (”SOUR”) on repeate since it first came out! 

Last Movie: Noctural Animals (2016, directed by Tom Ford). It has Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhall as the main characters and is just a really phenominal film. 

Last Series: I re-watched Ugly Betty again becuase it’s one of my all-tiime favorites, so why not?!

Sweet, Spicy or Savory: All! I like savory the most, but do like those jalepno flavored Cheetos (spicy without being overly spicy) and of course have to have sweets in my life too. 😋😅

Craving: Soft prerzels dipped in queso cheese, orange sherbert, Soutr Patch Kids and some fresh lemonade! 

Tea or Coffee: I drink a lot of both, but I am more of a tea girl for the most part. I can never resist a classic vanilla latte though!

Currently Working On: My Rob Gronkowski/Tom Brady fic, based on past moments that are leading up to present day; that NFL RPF cop A/U I was talking about a few months ago featuring (you guessed it!) Tom, Rob, Jules (as in Julian Edelman) and Danny (as in Danny Amendola); a few small I Am the Night fics that I am intending to make a series out of; other random story ideas that come into my head and won’t go away until I sit down and write a little about them. Also, I have a co-worker whose in her 40′s and has a daughter who is the same age as me. She’s going away to Maryland for college (we live in Indiana, so it’s a bit of distance!), so I’ve been buying her fun things to take with her to remind her of home while she’s out there studying and living her best life 💜😎

　 　　↺ ʜᴇᴀᴅᴄᴀɴᴏɴs﹕ 　 　　✎ ── Vi fu un tempo in cui i Dooddrear avevano sognato di controllare Ravenfire soli e supremi, ma erano stati costretti a scendere a compromessi per non estinguere la loro razza. Nonostante il patto che vi vigeva, vi erano famiglie di Dooddrear estremisti che sognavano ancora. Vi era un uomo spietato, uno dei pochi di tutta Ravenfire, che continuava a sperare che quel sogno si avverasse, il suo nome era Caleb Borrison. Estremista, razzista e violento,il dooddrear era riuscito a conquistare una donna, Nora Hadley, e ad avere dal suo grembo peccaminoso una creatura che, secondo la sua mente esaltata, avrebbe preso tra le mani Ravenfire, ma da questo nacquero ben due futuri dominatori. Il suo sogno, divenuto realtà la notte più calda dell'anno, il 13 agosto del 1992, aveva ormai un nome, o meglio due: Joseph e Harriet Borrison. La nascita di due gemelli alimentò la sete di potere del vecchio che era pronto a trasmettere ad entrambi e soprattutto al figlio maschio. Chiamato come il nonno, padre di Caleb, Joseph fu visto fin da subito come un bambino da rafforzare, da svuotare di ogni sentimento e da educare al totale controllo, perché lui avrebbe realizzato i sogni del vecchio Borrison. I suoi figli sarebbero stati la faccia della stessa medaglia, due complici in una missione orrenda, suicida e pressoché impossibile. Caleb decise, perciò, di educare severamente i suoi due figli e, per giunta, sempre al peggio con ogni metodologia possibile. La sua violenza contro entrambi non fece altro che renderli sempre più protettivi a vicenda. Joseph incominciò a nutrire fin da subito un interesse maniacale verso la sua gemella che lo portò a proteggerla sempre. Da qui il loro motto ''Always and Forever'' che avrebbe contraddistinto ogni loro azione l'uno verso l'altra. Geloso a livelli patologici della ragazza che portava il suo stesso sangue, fin da bambino incominciò a diventare l'incarnazione dell'odio, peggiorata da ogni piccolo dettaglio della sua vita familiare che lo rendeva con il passare dei giorni sempre più possessivo. Il bambino a soli 7 anni incominciò perfino ad odiare il padre quando questo inveiva contro la sorella, cercando, al contrario, di fronteggiarlo sempre lui proclamandosi ''l'uomo vero della famiglia''. Vista la totale negatività in cui i due bambini vivevano, Nora, la madre, tentò di allontanarli da Caleb, ma non ebbe tempo per attuare un vero e proprio piano, perché questo comprese ciò che ella voleva fare. Una notte, il piccolo Joseph seguì, con moltissima prudenza, suo padre e sua madre che si recavano nel bosco dopo aver litigato. Sotto gli occhi di Joseph, nascosto dietro un albero di quercia, Caleb uccise Nora. Da quel momento il sogno di Caleb divenne il suo peggior incubo. Nuuu non si invia tutta Joseph non disse mai nulla alla sorella di ciò che aveva visto per proteggerla da un'altra ondata di odio (con lei da bambino era molto dolce), ma giorno dopo giorno, sotto una piastrella del pavimento che poteva essere sollevata, il ragazzino incominciò ad appuntare con un pennello rosso ogni minimo peccato del padre contro di loro che avrebbe un giorno giustiziato. Si riprometteva ogni giorno di non diventare come il padre, ma non aveva compreso ancora che, in realtà, egli era proprio identico a lui. Rancoroso, geloso, legato morbosamente al valore della famiglia e alla sorella, violento, vendicativo e spesso impulsivo, ma anche calcolatore quanto bastava, il ragazzo sarebbe diventato l'estremista perfetto di Ravenfire. 　 　　✎✎ ── Con il passare del tempo, il giovane dooddrear comprese che l'unico suo affetto, l'unico suo bene, era sua sorella Harriet. Per questo egli divenne quasi ossessionato da lei: cercò di impicciarsi in tutti i suoi legami, le sue storie, cercando di preservarla sia dall'amore che dall'odio, ma Joseph non era onnipotente come pensava di essere già allora. Il suo carattere prevaricatore incominciò spesso a scontrarsi con l'indole ribelle della ragazza, che a differenza sua non ambiva al potere né ad essere comandata a bacchetta. Irrimediabilmente lunatico, il nostro dooddrear si sentì tradito ad ogni battibecco con la sorella, ad ogni parola espressa dal padre e ad ogni sua azione. Ciò lo portò ad aumentare la sua sete di potere, la sua voglia di controllare ogni singola azione di ogni singolo cittadino di Ravenfire, la sua voglia di manipolare la storia, la vita degli altri, ogni cosa. Ma la verità era un'altra: tutte le sue azioni erano mosse da un qualcosa di profondo che egli avvertiva dentro di sé, ma che non riusciva ad accettarlo, anzi lo odiava profondamente: sentirsi solo, solo contro il mondo, solo contro un confine che l'avrebbe limitato per sempre, solo con un sogno infantile mai realizzabile, un sogno che lo portava ad avere rancore anche verso il Consiglio. Allo stesso tempo il suo odio ed il suo rancore verso il padre continuarono a crescere con lui fino a giungere ad un tragico culmine: il vecchio Borrison comprese che il ragazzo accresceva il suo potere anche contro di lui e incominciò a chiamarlo '' The Bastard Son''. Non si seppe mai come riuscì a comprendere il figlio, se avesse mai visto la piastrella mobile della sua stanza, ma era soltanto la pura verità seppure Joseph continuava a negare perché amava la sua vita nonostante la negatività di cui era caratterizzata. Fu così che una notte premeditata, una notte di luna piena simile alla notte in cui era nato, il ragazzo ebbe una discussione con il padre che tentò di metterlo alla prova con la violenza. Tentato, stuzzicato nel profondo della sua anima da sociopatico, Joseph (per la prima volta con le lacrime agli occhi) chiese a suo padre perché non gli aveva mai dato pace. L'uomo blaterò cose vane e Joseph, accecato dai numerosi sentimenti che non era mai riuscito ad esternare fino a quel momento, lo uccise senza pensarci due volte. Impulsivo, da quel momento mantenne il segreto con Harriet, ma divenne ancor più violento, una vera e propria testa calda irrefrenabile e assetata di potere. Joseph Borrison divenne un vero e proprio mostro, un dooddrear eccezionale e temuto. Al solo suono del suo nome gli umani e le misere fate che lo conoscevano tremavano di paura, perché Joseph era l'incarnazione di ogni paura ed era sadicamente razzista contro ogni creatura che non fosse un Dooddrear e soprattutto con i veggenti che egli considerava “la nullità”. 　 　　✎✎✎ ── Il giovane estremista conobbe, grazie a quel pennello rosso con cui segnava i peccati del padre, l'arte del dipinto, ma rese questa passione un qualcosa di assai smodato, utilizzando sempre in modi originali, o meglio insoliti. Il sangue di coloro che Joseph uccideva o feriva, infatti, veniva preso da lui stesso con delle siringhe e messo in alcuni contenitori che usava per conservare il colore “vivo”. Joseph amava ogni dipinto, amava dipingere perfino per strada e grazie alle sue doti strabilianti per anni curò personalmente il museo, il suo design e le mostre che venivano fatte al suo interno. Adorava profondamente quel posto eppure ben presto incominciò a sentirsi “sprecato” anche lì, perché Joseph sognava di lavorare e di manipolare le persone, non mostrando le bellezze della vita, ma influenzando le loro menti subdole. Fu in questo momento di cambiamento che l’uomo conobbe una fata di nome Elenoire, una psicologa, che si era avvicinata a lui per volere della polizia e che voleva comprendere meglio la sua storia. La donna studiò ogni suo dipinto, ogni comportamento dell’uomo e, invece di aiutare la polizia, si innamorò perdutamente del Dooddrear che esercitava grande fascino. Il fascino oscuro di Joseph, infatti, era ben noto in tutta Ravenfire. La donna riuscì a cogliere chi Joseph fosse in realtà e riuscì a consigliargli di diventare sceneggiatore Joseph la vide come una minaccia e la uccise, ma, ben presto, capì che la donna non aveva detto nulla di sbagliato. Egli era destinato all’arte, l’arte dell’immaginare catastrofi, dell’immaginare psicologie differenti e del manipolare.... attori! Fu da quel momento che l’immaginazione di Joseph divenne la sua più fedele compagna, una donna da amare e da usare per difendersi nella sua vita privata e su quel palcoscenico sul quale già faceva le prove per diventare il KING di Ravenfire.

The Heteronormative Queer Film Brokeback Mountain

The movie that I decided to review was Brokeback Mountain with the director Ang Lee. I decided on this movie because of the impact it made on American society. Never in my life was queer media brought to my attention until this movie was released. The movie featured and followed the lives of two main characters; Jack Twist, played by Jake Gyllenhaal and Ennis Del Mar, played by Heath Ledger. The plot of this story was complex with the turns it took and the dissatisfaction the viewer gets after watching the end of the movie. Both characters are in Wyoming looking for a job. The two of them get paired on a job that herds sheep around broke back mountain protecting them from getting killed and eaten by coyotes. Over time on the mountain, Jack Twist ends up making a romantic move on Ennis Del Mar resulting in the two having sex. Their feelings start to develop into true love for one another. After the herding season is over, they go separate ways, leaving their love on the side. Over a period of about twenty years, the two continually get together to meet up at broke back mountain to have sexual relations and fulfill their inner love for one another. As time passes, the two aren’t able to meet up any longer since their lives have gotten more serious. Jack Twist ultimately leaves the United States to go to Mexico, ending with him being killed. To critically analyze this movie was difficult considering the movie has always been seen as very progressive. Throughout my analysis I was able to identify that while Brokeback Mountain did make queer media more visible, I argue that the movie still widely reinforces the theme of heteronormativity. 

Within this movie there were many themes the movie had that stood out as important pieces to point out during my analysis. The first theme I was able to identify was masculinity. I noticed this theme throughout because the two men didn’t feel comfortable doing certain things that made them possibly seem feminist. In the movie, Ennis Del Mar doesn’t talk much especially things that bring up emotions in him. I noticed this when he talks about his parents dying and him having to be raised by his two older siblings. This connected to masculinity because it is often seen in American society that crying is not a masculine attribute or action.

           The other major theme that I noticed was the idea of binary oppositions. The two men felt like they had no option to come out as gay to the people they loved. They felt like they had two options of sexuality; gay or straight. The men felt like they couldn’t ever come out as gay based on what could possibly happen to them if people found out. They never felt like there was more than two options, like being bisexual.

Another major theme that I identified was the theme of suppressed love. The whole movie is about the idea that the two men are deeply in love, but they cannot seek this love and accept it as normal. They have wives to hide that fact to themselves and others that they really are in love with one another. The two men are never able to fully pursue their love for one another and live a life without suppression. This suppression helped enforce the idea of heteronormativity because gay love is suppressed in favor of heterosexual relationships.

Throughout watching this movie, I was able to identify many different themes or ideas that connected to what we have talked about and learned in class. To start, I want to first address the idea of heteronormativity. Heteronormativity is essentially the idea that heterosexual relationships are the norm. As scholars Benshoff and Griffin stated, “Heterosexuality came to mean the “normal” orientation of male-female attraction and desire, while homosexuality remained its “abnormal shadow”.”(Benshoff and Griffin, 2004, p.3). This mean exactly what it says, heterosexuality is seen as the normal and homosexuality is seen as abnormal. This theme of heteronormativity is why I believe this movie is still problematic. While they are having gay relations, it is still seen as wrong and “abnormal” to the general public. The characters know this and is why the two never fully pursue their love for one another.

           The other course concept that I felt related to this movie and the problem of it reinforcing heteronormativity is binary oppositions. As described by scholar Andersson, “oppositions that is gendered and involve relations of power because one of the poles in the dichotomy is always inferior to the other.” (Andersson, 2002, p.5). This connects to the movie because of the binary opposition of heterosexual and homosexual. The idea that heterosexuality is superior to homosexuality is very apparent in the film through the idea that they can not be openly gay because of what others might think of them/do to them. Binary opposition of homosexuality and heterosexuality ultimately help reinforce the idea that since homosexuality is seen as “abnormal”, heterosexuality is the normal.  

           The last idea that the movie brought up that helped enforce the idea of heteronormativity is the idea that heterosexual people may watch the movie and experience queer ideas. This helps enforce heteronormativity because it makes it seem like everyone should experience the same things as people within the queer community. I argue that this is problematic because it pushes the idea that we are all the same. Yet, this is not the case. We as humans are so different and diverse and we aren’t supposed to be the same. I realize that it is helpful for people to experience queer elements, but I think some things are only understood by the community that is portrayed. In the case of this movie, I think the director tries to make the viewer feel like they can feel what the characters are going through. This is not the case. People can not truly understand what others are going through unless they’ve experienced it themselves. For the movie, I believe it is important for the viewer to feel empathy for the characters but what is problematic is the idea that we can see what they are going through and can experience that too. A quote from the Doty readings hit on this idea and states, “Basically heterocentrist texts can contain queer elements and basically heterosexual, straight identifying people can experience queer moments.” (Doty,1993, p.3). This quote points out how even queer media is made for heteronormative societies in which that is the normal. This overall helps reinforce heteronormativity by trying to create a movie that can feed heterosexual viewers information on what it is like to be queer when heterosexual viewers might not truly understand the ideas the movie is getting at. I know in my own personal case, without taking this queer media studies class, I would’ve thought that I truly know what it feels to be a gay man whose love is suppressed. Yet, I know now that I will never really know what that situation feels like unless I experience it myself.

One thing about the movie that I felt was problematic in addition to heteronormative views, is the representation of queer love. Although I realize this movie is meant to take place in a much different time then now, the movie portrays gay love as forbidden love. The characters are never able to embrace their sexuality and rather hide it by having wives and kids for the two main characters. I do not identify as a person who is in the LGBTQ community but to me this reinforced the idea that queer love is forbidden love that must ultimately be hidden or not pursued at all. The idea that love that has to be hidden if it is queer, forces many to follow to heteronormative model and not pursue gay love even if that is their sexuality.

           All in all, although I am very critical of the movie, Brokeback Mountain, I overall liked the movie a lot. The impact it made on society ultimately had greater positive impact on society than negative. Even though the movie is portraying heteronormative values, it does a great job at providing queer media visibility. Understanding my own subject positionality also has had a major impact on my analysis. Like I mentioned, I am not homosexual, nor a member of the LGBTQ community. This itself skews my views. I am a white cisgender male who does not experience the same hardships that person within the LGBTQ community does. I’m in a country of privilege and I experience many privileges that others do not. At the end of day, I am very lucky to be in the position I am in where I can go to school and learn more about queer media and lifestyle while also writing about it. In conclusion, although my views are skewed from my own subject positionality, I was able to determine that while the movie Brokeback Mountain did make queer media more visible, I argue that the movie still represents heteronormative ideas and values.

Books That Help With Magick📚

So I’ve noticed that there’s a lot of books about witchcraft and other things that are really helpful when practicing the craft! Here’s a list of books that I use and reference when making spells or when doing other things. This list will probably be added onto as my own library grows. (This post got a bit long so if you’d like to keep reading then it’ll continue!)

The Power of Birthdays, Stars & Numbers: The Complete Personology Reference Guide; By Saffi Crawford and Geraldine Sullivan

This book was one of the first books that I ever worked with. It helped me realize that witchcraft was something that I wanted to do, and was something I was doing before even knowing what it was called. It has an introduction to astrology and numerology as well as a dictionary of birthdays and an appendix of fixed stars.

Medicine Cards: The Discovery of Power Through the Ways of Animals; By Jamie Sams & David Carson (Illustrated by Angela C. Werneke)

(This book does use terms such as spirit animal, but I’ve never used the cards or book in this way since that’s closed culture. However, if someone messages me letting me know that it’s still seen as appropriative then I will gladly remove it from this list.) 

This comes with a deck of cards which I use as a tarot deck. They have depictions of North American animals on them (44 cards, 9 blank). It comes with 9 blank cards so that you can add your own animals in for readings. In the book there’s an introduction to the cards, different spreads, and the meanings of the cards.

While not necessarily targeted toward witchcraft, this book is still handy for research and getting more information on various Gods, Goddesses, and other Deities. It has wide variety including African, Celtic, Chinese, Greek, Indian, Native American, Norse and Scottish stories. The stories are categorized by the types of stories such as “Legends of Witchcraft”.

Sabbats: A Witch’s Approach to Living the Old Ways; By Edain McCoy (EDIT: It’s come to my attention that this author, while culturally well-done, they’re not too factual in many respects. For example: in one of her books she claims there was a potato goddess, and this couldn’t be because potatoes are from the Americas. Keep this in mind while reading both books on this list by her!)

In this book the author gives a summary of each Sabbat, and then gives different types of rituals, spells, and ways to celebrate each. It also gives recipes for things to prepare during the separate times of the year, and is a good way to get into the Sabbats and developing your own traditions.

Celtic Myth & Magic: Harnessing the Power of the Gods and Goddesses; By Edain McCoy

In this book there’s a summary of Celtic pantheons and ideals. It also gives a dictionary or encyclopedia of different deities in the Celtic pantheons. It then provides a list of references and other resources for Celtic practice.

Arcane society

Ed ecco il post che ho deciso di dedicare a una delle mie autrici preferite Amanda Quick e alla sua serie PARANORMAL ROMANCE più famosa e lunga, la ARCANE SOCIETY SERIES, purtroppo inedita in italiano, che narra le vicende di una società segreta nata in Inghilterra nel medioevo per motivi…diciamo alchimistici e di ricerche esoteriche legate ai poteri psichici, ma che proprio nell’Inghilterra vittoriana diventa una società dedita ad aiutare persone con poteri psichici. Solo antiche famiglie nobili dotate di poteri psichici per ora ne sono membri, ma piano piano le cose stanno cambiando e il capo del consiglio, da sempre un membro della famiglia Jones (dal primo capostipite che creò la società), ora ha anche istituito una sezione per investigare su crimini commessi da persone dotate di poteri.

E’ a questo punto, durante il regno della regina Vittoria in Inghilterra, che inizia la nostra storia. Sembra che qualcuno abbia rubato importanti documenti storici legati al capostipite della società, compresa la segretissima formula per creare una pozione in grado di ampliare i poteri psichici e che l’abbia ricreata. Cosa proiita visto che da sempre si sa che la pozuione ha la tendenza a rendere pazzo o morto chi la prova.

Ma qualcuno sta tentando di ricrearla e migliorarla….e sta commettendo omicidi pur di ottenere ciò che vuole. Parte da qui il primo libro della serie.

Libri che la compongono:

1. SECOND SIGHT

Gabriel Jones erede del primo Jones ed attuale capo del consiglio della Arcane society sta cercando di scoprire chi ha rubato importanti documenti (dopotutto il suo potere è proprio quello di un segugio ha un olfatto, un udito e riflessi acutissimi) e la famosa formula del suo antenato, e per farlo meglio si finge morto, ma per imbarazzanti circostanze è costretto a rivelare il suo piano a Venetia Milton, famosa fotografa e membro della Società in grado di leggere le aure. Insieme i due indagheranno e si innamoreranno visto che sembra che i loro poteri siano compatibili….. Questo libro è romantico, ma soprattutto è un giallo, molto godibile, con due personaggi molto intiganti.

2. THE THIRD CIRCLE

Seguito del primo libro, i malvagi sono stati sconfitti, ma non completamente. Uno di coloro che ha preso la pozione sta commettendo omicidi, starà a Thaddeus Ware, che possiede il potere di ipnotizzare la gente, cugino di Gabriel, indagare e cercare di fermarlo. Solo il suo potere infatti può permettergli di indagare nel più stretti segreto, ma ben presto dovrà accodarsi un’aiutante imprevisto Leona Hewitt, anche lei membro della società e potente maneggiatrice di cristalli, che sta cercando di recuperare un potente cristallo rubato ala sua famiglia.

3. THE PERFECT POISON

Stavolta i cattivi sembravano sbaragliati ma il chimico che aveva sintetizzato la pozione è riuscito a sfuggire e ha rovato nuove persone, membri della società stessa probabilmente, disposti a finanziare le sue malsane ricerche. Nuove morti richiedono nuove indagini. Stavolta tocca a Caleb Jones, un altro cugino di Gabriel Jones, dotato di u potente potere di intuizione, lui vede schemi ovunque ed è in grado di legare fatti che sembrano non collimare. Ma la sua logica sparirà quando incontrerà Lucinda, membro della società con un forte potee botanico, che con le piante e con i veleni e gli elisir ha un forte legame.- Insieme i due indagheranno e cercheranno di fermare la nuova catena di morti.In questo libro inoltre incontriamo una signora col potere di vedere le correnti di potere delle persone dotate di poteri psichici, e hce usa questa vista per creare coppie compatibili. Questo spunto, sarà poi ampliato nei romanzi contemporanei della serie, dove, secoli dopo la società ha creato un programa di computer in grado di fare lo stesso.

4. BURNING LAMP

Il fondatore dell'Arcane society, l'alchimista Sylvester Jones aveva un amico, poi divenuto rivale, Nicholas Winters anche lui dotato di poteri psichici. Entrambi erano alla ricerca di un metodo per accrescere i loro poteri, ma mentre Jones lo cercava nelle pozioni, Winters lo cercava nelle invenzioni. Fu così che inventò l'artefatto noto come Burning Lamp, che permise a Winters e a tutti i suoi discendenti diretti di poter sviluppare più talenti psichici, non solo uno. Purtroppo però questa facoltà aveva un caro prezzo: la discesa nella pazzia violenta: la maledizione dei Winters.

Perseguitato da allucinazioni e incubi, il signore dei bassifondi di Londra, Griffin Winters, non proprio uno stinco di santo, è convinto di essere stato colpito dalla maledizione e di stare per diventare pazzo. I suoi poteri psichici e il suo istinto lo guidano verso Adelaide Pyne, una scomoda riformista che però ben presto scopre essere in possesso della Burning Lamp. Con i suoi poteri psichici legati ai sogni e la sua capacità di usare la lampada Adelaide potrebbe forse salvare la sanità mentale di Griffin, ma molti nemici tramano contro di loro….

5. QUICKSILVER

Virginia Dean si sveglia a mezzanotte accanto a un cadavere, con un coltello insanguinato in mano e nessuna memoria degli eventi della serata. L'energia oscura, che emana dagli specchi che rivestono la stanza, la sta schiacciando, quando per fortuna viene salvata da un uomo che ha incontrato solo una volta, ma non ha dimenticato. Owen Sweetwater ha ereditato il talento della sua famiglia per la caccia ai mostri psichici che approfittano delle donne e bambini di Londra, e la sua indagine sulla morte di due persone dotate di poteri psichici lo ha condotto fino a Virginia che potrebbe essere la chiave per risolvere il suo caso più difficile poiché i suoi poteri sono molto rari e legati al vetro, proprio come quelli delle altre vittime.

6. CRYSTAN GARDENS

Evangeline Ames ha affittato un cottage di campagna lontano dalle strade di Londra dove è stata recentemente attaccata. Affascinata dalla energia paranormale dei vicini Giardini di cristallo, spesso si intrufola furtivamente oltre il muro del suo vicino per esplorarli. E quando la sua vita è minacciata ancora una volta, si rifugia istintivamente nei giardini in cerca di riparo. Il possessore dei suddetti giardini Lucas Sebastian può certo ignorare una donna in pericolo, anche se è colpevole di aver sconfinato nella sua proprietà. Rapidamente mette fuori gioco il malfattore che cercava di ucciderla e le chiede di mantenere segreto quanto accaduto. Girano già abbastanza voci riguardo i suoi giardini: riguardo tesori nascosti al loro interno e gli strani esperimenti botanici occulti effettuati da suo zio che è morto per cause misteriose. Le abilità psichiche di cercatrice di Evangeline e l'intuito legato alle menti criminali di Lucas, ben presto scoprono di avere un nemico comune. E mentre l'energia che emana dai Crystal Gardens si intensifica, si rendono conto che per sopravvivere devono scoprire ciò che ciò che è rimasto sepolto per troppo tempo …

La serie Arcane society si è poi sviluppata in rami diversi, e in epoche diverse attraverso una serie di serie spin off, tra cui vi cito:

- ARCANE SOCIETY CONTEMPORARY SERIES questi sono praticamente dei romantic suspance contemporanei, con molta azione, un mistero da risolvere e un tocco paranormale. Leggerli dopo gli storici permette di godersi molti parallelismi e associare a ogni protagonista il suo antenato, o chi aveva un potere simile. E ritrovare nel presente gli artifatti del passato sempre pericolosi e sempre pronti a passare di mano in mano.

1. WHITE LIES

Sono passati secoli, ma l’Arcane Society esiste ancora, anzi si è ampliata in una vera e propria corporazione di cui fanno parte tante famiglie dotate di poteri psichici. E purtroppo esiste anche un’altra società segreta, priva di scrupoli e con intenti criminali, che da secoli tenta di ricreare una pozione, ora una droga in grado di amoliare i poteri psichici.Siamo in America. Il libro si apre facendoci conoscere Clare Lancaster una parasensitiva di livello 10, lei riesce leggendo le aure a capire quando una persona mente. Come potrete ben immaginarvi la sua vita sociale ne risente molto. Ora Clare pè stata il frutto di una relazione extraconiugale del capostipite di una delle più famose e ricche famiglie dell’Arcane Society, e lei ha appena scoperto tutto questo.Ma conoscere suo padre la porterà a conoscere anche Jake Salter, anche lui membro della società, e con doti di segugio, e tra loro due scoppierà una scintilla. Così quando qualcuno attenterà alla vita di suo padre Clare e Jake inizieranno ad indagare…..

2. SIZZLE AND BURN

Raine Tallentyre ha un forte potere psichico riesce a sentire le voci della gente in pericolo di vita. Un dono che non le permette di vivere una vera vita ma che la costringe spesso ad aiutare la polizia. Da anni cerca di sfuggire al suo dono, ma ogni voltaa una nuova voce la costringe ad aitarla.Così Rayne finirà con rimanere invischiata nell’indagine di Zack Jones, ereede del capostipite della Arcane Society, che sta indagando su una organizzazione malavitosa sesgreta che usa poteri psichici per terribili fini. Se Rayne sente le voci delle vittime, Zack è vittima di terribili visioni e precognozioni. Insieme i due non potranno certo fallire…..

3. RUNNING HOT

L’ ex-poliziotto Luther Malone, lettore di aure, dopo un incidente, che gli ha laciato una gamba dolorante, è stato costretto a laciare il lavoro. Ora vive ai tropici e lavora saltuariamente per l’Arcane Society. Proprio un loro incarico gli farà incontrare Grace Renquist, anche lei una lettrice d’aure molto potente e speciale. Le scintille tra i due volano, ma il loro incarico è difficilissimo, scoprirel’identità di quanti più moembri possibile di un’organizzazione segreta e sfuggire ad un assassina che è in grado di uccidere le persone con la sua voce.

4. FIRED UP

Jack Winters è uno dei discendenti di Nicholas Winters, l'arcinemico dell'alchimista fondatore dell'Arcane society Sylvester Jones. Come lui anche Winters sperimentò con i suoi poteri psichici in cerca di modi per aumentarli e i suoi discendenti ne pagano a tutt'oggi le mortali conseguenze. Jack Winters, ha iniziato a soffrire di terribili incubi e blackouts - momentanee perdite di memoria- e crede che questo sia solo l'inizio di una tortuosa discesa verso la pazzia omicida, la maledizione della sua famiglia. La legenda dice che deve trovare la Burning Lamp un antico artifatto, se vuole salvarsi e deve anche trovare una donna in grado di manipolare l'energia della lampada.

Jack è convinto che l'investigatrice privata Chloe Harper sia la donna che sta cercando, il suo talento per trovare oggetti perduti e manipolare l'energia dei sogni potrebbero salvarlo, ma la potente attrazione che li lega potrebbe aumentare esponenzialmente il pericolo in cui si trovano, poiché non sono gli unici sulle tracce della Lampada…

 5. IN TOO DEEP

Trama: Mondo contemporaneo. Protagonista del libro è uno dei membri della Famiglia Jones che abbiamo già incrociato nei libri precedenti, Fallon Jones, che a causa di un potere che gli fa vedere le possibili ramificazioni di ogni cosa e azione, è ritenuto uno che vede cospirazioni ovunque. Stanco di essere considerato pazzo Fallon ha trasferito l’agenzia investigativa in un paesino di provincia isolato ma al centro di forse magnetiche che attirano chi ha poteri psichici. Qui incontra Isabella, nipote di una donna famosa per vedere cospirazioni ovunque, che lo tratta come se fosse una persona del tutto normale e l’attrazione vola. Anche Isabella ha dei poteri più legati agli oggetti e alla scia psichica di una persona in un dato luogo. Entrambi saranno presto coinvolti in un difficile caso che implica il contrabbando di preziosi e pericolosi artefatti sottratti all’Arcane society. Attenti alle bambole assassine…. La mia opinione: Bello. Ma d’altronde lo stile di questa scrittrice, specie quando è più realistica e meno mistica, mi piace moltissimo e la trovata degli strani oggetti regolati da misteriosi meccanismi in grado di uccidere è estremamente buona, come il mistero all’interno del libro. Non è chiaro se non alla fine chi è dietro a tutto.L’elenco sopra è incompleto e andrebbe aggiornato, poichè l’autrice ha scritto un’altra breve trilogia all’interno della serie negli ultimi anni, ma poichè è piuttosto staccata dalla serie principale, ho deciso di non riportarla in questo post. Voglio invece parlarvi dell’ultimo libro che ho letto, In too deep, che è molto legato alla serie principale, pur essendo anch’esso parte di una sottoserie della serie principale.

6.COPPER BEACH

All'interno delle pagine di libri molto rari, alcuni antichi di secoli, si trovano i segreti del paranormale e l'insolito talento psichico di Abby Radwell per poter trovare e leggere questi volumi la mette in serio pericolo.   Dopo un incidente mortale accaduto nella biblioteca privata di un collezionista ossessivo, Abby riceve una minaccia di ricatto, e viene raggiunta dalla voce che un vecchio testo alchemico conosciuto come La chiave è riapparso sul mercato nero. Convinta di avere bisogno di un investigatore che possa farle anche da guardia del corpo, assume Sam Coppersmith, specialista in cristalli paranormali. La passione tra di loro scatta immediatamente, ma nessuno dei due si fida completamente dell'altro. Quando si ha a che fare con un assassino con capacità paranormali, e un ricattatore che non si fermerà davanti a nulla per ottenere un antico codice alchemico - nessuno è al sicuro e dovranno imparare a collaborare per sopravvivere.

7. DREAM EYES

Gwen Frazier, una terapista parapsichica, viene a sapere che un suo amico è morto in circostanze misteriose in un piccolo paese tra le montagne dell'Oregon. Gwen sospetta che sia rimasto vittima del un serial killer, creduto morto da anni, che tempo prima aveva cercato di uccidere lei e altri sensitivi. Convinta che quel mostro sia vivo e la stia cercando si rivolge alla potente famiglia Coppersmith di Copper Beach in cerca di aiuto. La famiglia manda Judson Coppersmith ad aiutarla. Judson, che si sta riprendendo da una missione finita male, è intensamente attratto da Gwen, ma è anche ossessionato da un oscuro incubo riguardante la sua ultima missione durante la quale è quasi morto e da diversi problemi professionali…Gwen non può fare a meno di volerlo guarire e aiutare ma non sa se ne avrà il tempo…. ultimo fallimentosi riferisce alla sua esperienza di quasi morte per la sua ultima missione ricorrenti …

Ed esiste anche una serie spin off ambientata nel futuro:

- la ARCANE SOCIETY FUTURISTC SERIES libri romantic sci-fi Praticamente tutti i libri facenti parte della serie Harmony world non sono altro che seguiti della serie Arcane society, poichè la serie Arcane society è il presupposto della serie Harmony. La storia ha inizio con comparsa sulla terra di un misterioso portale , un velo, che permette ai terrestri attraversandolo di viaggiare nella galassia a grandi distanze verso un misterioso ma rigoglioso pianeta. Il passaggio rimane aperto per anni ed è ritenuto stabile al punto che i terrestri colonizzano quel pianeta e gli scambi commerciali sono stabili, poi un giorno il passaggio si chiude e i coloni restano tagliati fuori dalla Terra per sempre. Cosa grave dal momento che la normale tecnologia terrestre non può essere creata e riprodotta sul pianeta e ora non possono più contare su scambi commerciali. Occorreranno secoli, ma riusciranno ha ricostruire una civiltà moderna grazie proprio al fatto che molti coloni sono parte della Arcane society cioè dotati di poteri psichici, poiché il pianeta di Harmony li attirava come le mosche al miele, e anche quei pochi coloni ignari dell'esistenza dei poteri psichici ora ne sono consapevoli e scoprono di averli poiché il pianeta li amplifica grazie a dei cristalli che si trovano ovunque e che  possono essere usati per caricare,  conservare ed esaltare energia di tipo psichico.

Così i coloni sfrutteranno i cristalli e l'energia psichica per ricostruire un nuovo tipo di tecnologia e rifiorire lontani dalla terra. E tutto il pianeta di viene come una grande società di psi…..

E risbucheranno pure alcuni artifatti già incontrati nel passato vittoriano della terra.

Da notare che l'importanza dei cristalli in correlazione ai poteri psichici viene più volte rimarcata nei libri storici e contemporanei della serie, specie nei due libri legati alla famiglia Coppersmith.

E molte storiche famiglie della Arcane society le reincontreremo anche sul pianeta Harmony non temete.

Personalmente, non amo molto i futuristici della serie, li trovo molto distanti dagli altri libri sia storici che contemporanei, il mondo in cui i personaggi vivono, la loro realtà quotidiana è molto diversa dalla nostra, aliena e molto astratta tutto gira molto sul piano psichico difficile da immaginare almeno per me. Ma è questione di gusti.Questo non toglie che io sia una grande fan della Arcane society e ve la consiglio caldamente, mi spiace che praticamente tutti i libri che la compongono siano inediti in italiano è un vero peccato.

La Krentz sta continuando a scrivere libri appartenenti alla Arcane society, sia storici, che contemporanei che futuristici, perciò se come me vi innamorerete della serie, avrete molto da leggere non temete.

Currently Reading: I’m always reading at least five books at one once because books are everything 💖 Right now, I’m in the middle of Safe by S.K. Barnett, Mergers and Acquistions by Cate Doty, Before She Dissappeared by Lisa Gardner and The Summer of Everything by Julian Winters. And of course, I’ve been reading reading lots of fanfictions for all types of fandoms and ships!!!

Last Song: “Brutal” by Olivia Rodrigo...but I’ve had her entire album (”SOUR”) on repeate since it first came out! 

Last Movie: Noctural Animals (2016, directed by Tom Ford). It has Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhall as the main characters and is just a really phenominal film. 

Last Series: I re-watched Ugly Betty again becuase it’s one of my all-tiime favorites, so why not?!

Sweet, Spicy or Savory: All! I like savory the most, but do like those jalepno flavored Cheetos (spicy without being overly spicy) and of course have to have sweets in my life too. 😋😅

Craving: Soft prerzels dipped in queso cheese, orange sherbert, Soutr Patch Kids and some fresh lemonade! 

Tea or Coffee: I drink a lot of both, but I am more of a tea girl for the most part. I can never resist a classic vanilla latte though!

Currently Working On: My Rob Gronkowski/Tom Brady fic, based on past moments that are leading up to present day; that NFL RPF cop A/U I was talking about a few months ago featuring (you guessed it!) Tom, Rob, Jules (as in Julian Edelman) and Danny (as in Danny Amendola); a few small I Am the Night fics that I am intending to make a series out of; other random story ideas that come into my head and won’t go away until I sit down and write a little about them. Also, I have a co-worker whose in her 40′s and has a daughter who is the same age as me. She’s going away to Maryland for college (we live in Indiana, so it’s a bit of distance!), so I’ve been buying her fun things to take with her to remind her of home while she’s out there studying and living her best life 💜😎

But it is missing a song: Shania Twain’s “You’re Still the One”. Harry and Kacey Musgraves sang a cover of it live at his Madison Square Garden 2018 concert. It really fits the vibes of being a Larry song through and through. Not to mention that Harry is a big fan of Shania herself (: 

I know that I could just make my own playlist and put “You’re Still the One” on mine, but I don’t know, I really feeel that it belongs on the list that already exists.

L'Organ Trio capitanato dal chitarrista Daniele Ciuffreda, con  Alberto Marsico, uno dei principali esponenti italiani dell'organo Hammond e Alessandro Minetto, musicista fra i più richiesti, alla batteria, presenterà il recente disco "Out of the Ninth Day", edito da Abeat Records, con due ospiti di straordinario livello internazionale: Paolo Tomelleri il decano del jazz italiano, indiscutibilmente riconosciuto come il più grande clarinettista italiano per storia e carisma e Scott Hamilton, gigante internazionale del sassofono.

Scott Hamilton da molti anni calca i migliori palcoscenici in tutto il mondo, come leader o a fianco di altri mostri sacri del jazz. Il suo stile include il lirismo di Ben Webster e la passionalità di John Coltrane. Scott Hamilton è l'interprete di una musica straordinariamente elegante, basata su un impeccabile fraseggio ed un sound affascinante, quello che giá negli anni settanta, quando la diffusa tendenza era quella di sondare alternative sonore particolarmente aggressive, lo impose per la dolcezza del suo sassofono e l'immaginazione creativa. Ha pubblicato a suo nome più di trenta album, collaborando tra gli altri con Dave McKenna, Jake Hanna, Woody Herman, Tony Bennett, Gerry Mulligan, Maxine Sullivan, insomma una buona parte del Gotha mondiale d'oltreoceano.

Paolo Tomelleri, una carriera gigantesca che lo ha visto protagonista sia nel jazz che nella musica leggera, in veste di leader, collaboratore, arrangiatore, sinanche direttore d’orchestra in varie edizioni del Festival di Sanremo. Intere generazioni plasmate dalla sua grande capacità semplice ed istintiva in veste di didatta del clarinetto e del sassofono. Collaborazioni che vanno da Jannacci, Finardi, Celentano ai grandi del jazz. Ha da sempre suonato in collettivi, big band ed orchestre anche a suo nome, dal momento che ha pochi eguali in termini di espressività, doti tecniche ed estro improvvisativo.

Una chiusura di stagione degna del fascinoso cartellone.

In apertura l'esibizione degli ultimi vincitori del #ContestBeatboxRapFreeStyleJazz giovanile realizzato quest'estate per JAZZaltro con i fondi ricavati dalla raccolta di Eventi in Jazz a Castellanza dello scorso anno.
