⛵ Rise Together, Mend the Waves ⚓✨
As you bask in the tranquility of this mesmerizing scene, let the wisdom guide you: "A rising tide lifts all boats, but some boats require patching." 🌊⛵
The ebb and flow of life often present us with collective opportunities for growth and prosperity. When we lift each other up, support one another, and embrace unity, we create a rising tide that elevates us all. 🌅🌠
However, let us not forget that not all boats are in perfect condition. Some require mending, healing, and nurturing before they can fully rise with the tide. It is our responsibility to recognize and address the challenges that some face, extending a helping hand to repair and strengthen their vessels. ⚓🤝
In this moment of reflection, let us remember the importance of empathy, compassion, and solidarity. Together, we can create a more inclusive world—one where no one is left behind, and everyone has an equal chance to sail towards their dreams. 🌈💙
As you watch the waves dance and the sun casts its golden hues, ponder the ways in which you can contribute to patching the boats that require your support. Every act of kindness, every word of encouragement, and every gesture of understanding can make a difference in someone's life. 🙌✨
So, my friend, let us rise together, united in our pursuit of a more harmonious and compassionate world. Let us mend the waves, one boat at a time, and ensure that no one is left adrift in their struggles. ⛵️🌊
Share in the comments below: How will you contribute to lifting others and mending the boats that need patching? Let's inspire each other to create a rising tide of love, support, and collective upliftment. 💙🌟

Police Brutality and the History of Racism
I took a class this semester called the Science and Origin of Race; we spent the semester and reading and discussing where the concept of race and racism came from. When the recent events including the murder of Michael Brown and Eric Garner occurred, it was impossible to not see the connections with the origins of racism and what's happening today. This is a paper I wrote discussing this. For all the people that say 'its not a race issue', here's some proof that it is.
When Darren Wilson, the cop that murdered Michael Brown on August 9th 2014, explained his encounter with the unarmed 18 year old, he said "...when I grabbed him, the only way I can describe it is I felt like a 5-year-old holding onto Hulk Hogan, that's just how big this man was. He was very large, very powerful man”. He went on to say that when he got hit once by Michael Brown, he immediately felt the need to defend himself with a gun because “more hits could be fatal if he hit me right”. Ironically, when witnessing the post incident photos of Wilson's injuries, he barely has a bruise from where Brown hit him. Statements such as these have been used to oppress black people for centuries. It dehumanizes them, makes them seem to have superhuman strength combined with subhuman intelligence, which has given white people an excuse to oppress, enslave, and murder people of African descent since the dawn of racism.
In Stephen Jay Gould's book, The Mismeasure of Man, he discusses the 'apishness of undesirables' through the studies of criminal anthropology: “Both theories relied upon the same quantitative and supposedly evolutionary method – the search for signs of apish morphology in groups deemed undesirable” (Gould 142). Scientists during the 19th century created a term called recapitulation, which was the idea that African adults were of the same evolutionary progress of white children. These scientists used craniometry to measure skulls and compare them to skulls of white children, for which they based this theory on. A full grown human with the mental capacity of a child was to them closer to an ape than a human. “Recapitulation also provided an irresistible criterion for any scientist who wanted to rank human groups as higher and lower” (Gould 144). This theory went far enough to say that “savages” had a lesser threshold for pain. This is still seen time and time again with any police brutality case. The officer that has murdered the black man exclaims that although he was shot, beat with a club continuously, and / or shocked with a taser, he just keeps going, fighting back with superhuman strength. It always seems that the murder is justified because there was no other option, killing is the only way to stop the rage of the black man. It is very obvious that this is not true in all the recent cases. Eric Garner, for example, a 44 year old man that was choked to death in Staten Island for being accused of selling lose cigarettes on July 17th 2014. We have high quality video proof that show's everything that happened during the incident: Garner was accused of selling lose cigarettes, he denied it and asked to be left alone, shortly after police officer Daniel Pantaleo jumped onto Garner's back and held him in a chokehold, brought him to the ground, and continued to choke him until he died of asphyxiation. Garner's last words were
“Every time you see me, you want to mess with me. I'm tired of it. It stops today. Everyone standing here will tell you I didn't do nothing. I did not sell nothing. Because every time you see me, you want to harass me. You want to stop me selling cigarettes. I'm minding my business, officer, I'm minding my business. Please just leave me alone. I told you the last time, please just leave me alone. please please, don't touch me. Do not touch me” When the officer brought him to the ground in a chokehold, he pleaded with the words “I can't breathe” repeated 8 times.
Even with all the proof and Eric Garner's very obvious plea for justice, Daniel Pantaleo was not charged or arrested for anything. The chokehold performed by him during the murder is an illegal act according to police regulations, Garner was unarmed and did not attempt to defend himself or harm the officers that were present during the incident. This example makes it painfully obvious that our justice system values black lives less than others. The ripples of recapitulation show themselves in cases like this: it is still justifiable for a white person to murder someone for no reason with all evidence against them.
This country was built on racism and superiority. Thomas Jefferson, one of the 'forefathers of our nation' states, “The blacks, whether originally a distinct race, or made distinct by time and circumstance, are inferior to the whites in the endowment both of body and of mind”. Jefferson was strongly against slavery, but he believed that African people were “condemned by nature to an inferior status” (Gossett 42-44). He argues many points, including that black people are 'ugly' because they don't blush or have the same facial expressions as white people, that they smell different and have different hair that is less attractive than that of white people. He says that their love and relationships are less intimate and complex, their ability to learn is less, they have dull imaginations and inferior reasoning. Benjamin Franklin stated that he would like to see a country with only light skinned people, that darker people would lessen the quality of America, and he would like to exclude them to leave more room for the “lovely white and red” (Gould 64). These two men assisted in writing the Declaration of Independence, brainstormed the constitution. Could it be possible that these ideas on the inferiority of black people marred the foundation of our nation to the point that they still exist today? How else could white police officers walk free after murdering unarmed black men? Why else would the United States Prison Population be 37% black while the National Population is 13.6% black? (US Federal Bureau of Prisons). Institutional racism still exists, and tracing it back to our nation's founders could be the answer to why.
Nott and Gliddon, two 19th century scientists, were the forerunners of American Polygeny and Craniometry, two practices that further assisted the oppression of African People. They measured and compared the skulls of African people to the skulls of primates, and created many charts and diagrams to illustrate this to the general public. It became the trend of scientists of this time period to compare African people with animals to create the idea that they are 'savages'. Georges Cuvier, French scientist, spoke about native Africans as, “the most degraded of human races, whose form approaches that of the beast and whose intelligence is nowhere great enough to arrive at regular government” (Gould 69). Louis Agassiz, swiss naturalist, was another forerunner of Polygeny, which is the idea that different races are different species, therefore different races can be categorized according to research and observation. He thought of African people as lowest on the totem pole of intelligence, when it came to education he said, “it must be tailored to innate ability; train blacks in hand work, whites in mind work” (Gould 79). These scientists were the popular opinion of the day; what they said was held in high regard. These ideas made their way quickly to America. People regularly saw charts comparing the skulls of white people to black people and then to apes. Portrait drawings were made of black people next to chimpanzees. The seed of superiority was planted in the minds of white people. They now had no reason to feel guilt about the way they treated African people: according to science, they were of a completely different and less intelligent species. White people were made to believe that black people thrived on manual labor, that they felt less pain and had less of an emotional range, that they were closer in evolution to savage animals.
If we take these ideas that were established in the 19th century and apply them to the recent cases of police brutality, we can find many connections. This brings us back to Darren Wilson's statements on the Michael Brown incident. In his testimony he says, “and he had the most intense aggressive face. The only way I can describe it, it looks like a demon, that's how angry he looked. He comes back towards me again with his hands up”. Once again, Brown is dehumanized. He's called a demon, a superhuman force with intense aggression. These statements give the opportunity for people to empathize with Wilson: he was fighting against a demon with the strength of hulk hogan, no wonder he shot him 6 times. Of course Michael Brown was not a demon, nor did he have superhuman strength. He was not helpless against the 'intense aggression” of Michael Brown, he was the one with the gun and Brown was unarmed, running away from Wilson. Statements like this give prosecutors reason to side with Wilson and justify his actions. Again, the deep history of racism in our nation still echoes and shows itself in situations like this. Wilson's statements could've been taken straight out of a text by Nott and Gliddon, Cuvier, or Agassiz.
How do we take action against this endless fight of superiority and injustice? Thomas F. Gossett discusses this in his chapter “The Battle Against Prejudice” in his book Race: The History of an Idea in America. He states, “Prejudice against ethnic minorities in this country has been immensely strong. Sometimes it has approached the point at which it seemed doubtful whether some ethnic groups were to be considered human at all, but there has always remained a nagging doubt that they might be” (Gossett 431). I think we've reached one of those points; can black lives be considered human by our justice system if the blatant murder of African Americans is left without punishment? The police force is supposed to protect to lives and well being of all Americans, yet what were left with is the biggest gang in our country, a group of people that causes fear and inequality. The racial injustice practiced by the police force has a long history, and it's time to change it.
The recent tragedies of the Michael Brown and Eric Garner cases has stirred up what some people might call a revolution. People are analyzing our Nation's justice system and finding the flaws. 30,000 people marched on Saturday, December 13th in solidarity for all the people killed because of racial injustice by the police. If we look at the details of these incidents, it's very easy to find the connection to the origin of racism in the United States. As Gould stated, our nation has a deep history of racial violence, slavery, and prejudice. Statements are made every day by oppressors that suggest that black lives are worth less than white lives; that black people are less human than white people. The struggle of racial oppression in woven into our government, our constitution, and our laws. I hope that these incidents can serve as a wake up call to create change.

Anne Smedinghoff - A True Hero
For today's blog we wanted to share the touching story of truly inspiring woman that is in every sense of the word, a hero.
~
This past weekend a young American diplomat was tragically killed while doing what she loved most, helping others.
Anne Smedinghoff was 25 and a public diplomacy officer for the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan. As a public diplomacy officer her job was to engage, inform, and influence groups and members of civil societies in order to promote a mutual understanding and support for U.S. policy goals. Anne had high hopes for the future of the world. She believed in changing people's lives, making a difference, and having an impact.

Often Anne would find herself projects that involved going out to the various provinces within and around Afghanistan. She particularly liked outreach programs like delivering textbooks to schools, organizing educational efforts and working with women's groups to promote equality. A girl after our own heart, Anne believed that there was a lot of good to be done in the world and she wanted to be part of it.
Sadly, this past Saturday, Anne was taken from this world far too soon. While on her way to deliver books to a school in southern Afghanistan, a suicide bomber smashed into her convoy, killing Anne and four others.
Anne was such a commendable young woman who was just trying to bring knowledge to people, in the form of books, with the hopes that they would be able to see life's full potential. It is a true shame that she will no longer be able to provide her positive impact to the world, but we cannot help but be eternally grateful for the immense amount of positive change that Anne did create while alive. The lives she touched, and the greatness she inspired is something that will live on.
To hear of someone like Anne that stared adversity and the world's fear of knowledge in the face without backing down is amazing.
We at Traveling Stories are all about bringing positive change to the world, and what Anne Smedinghoff did qualifies her as a true hero in our eyes.
I encourage everyone to find inspiration in Anne's life and work. No matter how big or small an act, everyone has the ability to help change the world. All you have to do is put your heart and soul into it, just like Anne.
~
Thank you to our wonderful followers/supporters that brought the article about Anne to our attention.

・・・ greetings & watsgreat world. this is the OG logo for Blue Nile Magi Enterprises (BNMEnterprises). it is a creation of dieselfingas designs (dfdesigns), a subsidiary of BNMEnterprises. what is BNMEnterprises? it's the home of a number of businesses designed w/the primary purpose of creating positive change. 1 of the ways BNMEnterprises intends to create positive change is by establishing a platform of sorts for the greater appreciation of art. clearly there are numerous other entities that do this. what is it that makes BNMEnterprises different? there are a few things that make this operation distinct. of the more prominent is a sincere goal of working beyond that which is accepted as mainstream. it will not be an easy thing to establish & maintain this goal. people are generally highly resistant to change from that which is deemed safe & comfortable. this is a very serious problem. to put it into some perspective, there was a time when the mainstream was extremely comfortable w/enslaving Nubians for the sake of establishing capitalism as a global economic system. certain members of society felt quite safe w/this practice & were absolutely willing to kill to maintain the perceived level of acceptable social organization. safety & comfort. the status quo is rarely considerate of the need for positive change. history is quite clear about such behavior patterns. some do not like to recognize & discuss these patterns. BNMEnterprises is based on ideas that acknowledge these patterns, the associated problems, & the ongoing effort to create constructive solutions. why? because the mind does not derive solutions to problems that are not recognized. what does your mind do? 🧠🤔 ・・・ #BLUENileMagiEnterprises #BNMEnterprises #indie #independent #watURMINDdo #KIM #grindondaily #stayongrind #SOLUTIONs #canUswim #doUPLAY #itaintthatdeep #CREATEPOSITIVECHANGE #CHANGE #dfdesigns #analog2digital #designs #WSOQ #SOLUTIONsOrQuiet #ABB #FREEURMIND #THINKBROAD (at Dfinery) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-LAIeZjhW3/?igshid=1wlg09t6bn3cx

・・・ #BNMMEDIA #metaphysicsontheflizy #theSOLUTIONisU #staySHARP i am a professional cliché mangler. it's part of why i initially began to slangulate. the mangling is generally not on purpose. in this instance it is. ☆ "people don't change." ☆ IMHO it's bullshit. why? because people absolutely change. they may not necessarily change the way others want, but that's another ball on the wrong field. people change when they want to change. it is a 100% internal phenomenon when it occurs. even if it is somehow inspired by some external stimuli, the determination & work are purely functions of the individual's internal state of being/mind. the solution is internal. you, we, us. people do change. some of us have no incentive to change. why change if you think you're going to be at some sort of loss? ¤ • privilege/prestige • material wealth • power there are huebeins that will kill to avoid such losses. i suppose that the accountability inherently necessary for change is too much of a burden. it is perceived to be much easier to resort to violent suppression of change instead. behaviorally this is quite odd since change is the universal constant. 🤔🌌♾ #himunsupervised #Illadelphbluntly ・・・ #metaphysician #alchemist #philosopher #CREATEPOSITIVECHANGE #NATURAL #CHANGE #CHANGEisNATURAL #LIFE #alchemy #metaphysics #philosophy #THINKGLOBAL #THINKUNIVERSAL #UNIVERSAL #watisCIVILIZATION #BEHAVIOR #BEHAVIORpatterns #watdoUREAD #watURMINDdo #CIVILIZATION #psychology (at North Philadelphia) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtQ0XGnDDF3/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=2vaslf1zyvuf
