Sources and Significance - Critical Analysis
Carpenter, J. (2023). 'The Aesthetics of Human-Machine Interaction: Generative Textuality in Hello Games’s No Man’s Sky'. Journal of Aesthetics and Phenomenology. 9(2). pp. 184–185. Available at: https://doi.org/10.1080/20539320.2022.2150464 [Accessed 07th January 2024]
This article examines generative technology using the video game ‘No Man’s Sky’ as an example and the human-machine interaction that this technology can create. The author Justin Carpenter’s (a PhD in English and Literature) research focuses on the genealogy of the term ‘generative’. He also researches topics such as aesthetics, philosophy, and technology.
The reason I have chosen to write about this article is because I it is truly relevant to my practise. This is because the generative technology it mentions is becoming increasingly used in video games in our day and age, especially now that AI is becoming incorporated into many things (which can take the generative technology used in video games to a whole new level). I believe this technology if used right will aid in the development of most video games to come.
The video game “No Man’s Sky” is a space exploration sandbox game where the player is thrown into a universe of an epic scale, this scale is achieved via the implementation of generative systems. No Man’s Sky was one of the first games that attempted to utilise almost exclusively generative systems to shape itself, thus it is very relevant when discussing this topic.
In the beginning of the article, the author describes the video game No Mans Sky and discusses generative art theory and its history. Even stating that “generative art theory has preceded computers by thousands of years” giving examples such as “perspective” and “the golden section” which are techniques used in many art pieces both old and new”. However, I think the generative technology we use in modern day video games is much more complex than these examples and thus deserving a separate corridor from these older concepts, nonetheless this was an interesting perspective even though I don’t fully agree with it.
The section of the article I would like to focus on most are pages 184 and 185, these pages focus on “The procedural relationship between authorship, agency, and emergence in No Man’s Sky”. I find this section the most interesting as it brings together the previous points of the article and discusses these concepts more in depth, the author also gives more of his thoughts/opinions about them rather than describing the game or the theories themselves.
Here, the author states that with generative narratives, the player can influence outcomes and better create emergent experiences, while also adding that in video games, it is required that the player adopts a “lusory attitude” to better adopt the potentially “arbitrary or irrational” roles that the game requires of them to be more immersed.
He then references some ideas from a paper called “Games are Not” (2017) by David Myers which argues that the way in which meaning or information is created within games, if guided by the rules and procedures of the game itself act much differently from the way in which meaning, or information is typically understood outside of video games. This essentially means that in real life, we find meaning from more diverse and subjective experiences. However, in video games these experiences are shaped and constrained by the rules/narrative of the game.
After this, the author states that the forces through which players experiment with whilst playing the game, such as mechanics, gameplay loops and systems need not be opposed to narrative but rather should be part of the narrative itself.
This statement is then connected closer with No Man Sky and the author mentions that players lacked purpose because while the game had an immense and endless scale, it lacked depth. Each planet or creature encountered is like the previous in many ways. Players were able to endlessly explore this universe and perform various activities from “mining, flying to spelunking” but the game does not provide any good reasons to do so. This means that the generative systems were simply generating similar iterations of the same subjects (planets/creatures/fauna/etc).
The author then explains that eventually the player meets a character named “Atlas” a machine intellect who tries to give the player a sense of purpose via the goal of trying to reach the centre of the universe. However, once the player achieves this long and arduous goal, the game simply births a star and gives the player the same goal of getting to the centre of this new universe, thus prolonging the game infinitely. I believe this makes the player feel cheated by the developers who seem as if they were lacking the time/planning to create a worthwhile ending.
In the next section the text states that the developer “Hello Games” has attempted to address these issues with the game but have not been fully successful in doing so. They have added more activities and content to do in game but have not managed to fix the underlying issues with the generative systems that the game uses. The author then gives a quote by game critic Gareth Damian who said that No Mans Sky is not an an unlimited universe but rather a small universe that has many limits, the limits are recombined into endless variations to provide some illusion of scale, but this is easy for any player to see-through.
In conclusion, I think that anyone who plays No Man’s Sky will indeed produce their own emergent narratives to a small extent thanks to the generative systems in play. However this experience will not be so unique or separate from any other player (which makes the implementation of the generative systems lacklustre). The systems, in their current implementation at least, are not able to create a true emergent experience for the player. However I believe the use of these systems in No Mans Sky was still an important experiment in the history of video games and may prove to be a step in the right direction if future developers decide to expand and improve upon this technology.
To fully utilise this technology it should be combined with AI, as the main issue with the implementation of generative systems here is that they are limited to the initial algorithm or set of rules that the developer has set. The solution would be to create complex generative systems that produce other complex generative systems and so on and are smart enough to react with each other. I believe this would in theory create the kind of living universe that No Mans Sky attempted to because the generative systems will in this case be doing much more than simply creating different variations of the same few objects/patterns/algorithms.

Tumblr media
A PhD thesis in English literature represents the culmination of years of academic research and is a significant milestone in the life of any aspiring scholar. This lengthy and intricate document serves as a testament to the candidate's expertise, dedication, and contribution to the field of English literature. In this 1000-word essay, we will delve into the essence of a PhD thesis in English literature, its purpose, structure, and the journey that leads to its completion.
A PhD thesis in English literature is an extensive research project that aims to make a substantial and original contribution to the field. It is the final step in a doctoral candidate's academic journey, and it demonstrates their ability to conduct independent research, think critically, and engage with the existing body of literature. The thesis serves as a platform for scholars to explore, analyze, and advance the knowledge in their chosen area of interest within the realm of English literature.
Purpose of a PhD Thesis in English Literature
The purpose of a PhD thesis in English literature is multifaceted. First and foremost, it is a means for the candidate to showcase their expertise in the subject matter. Legal Aid and Advice (Amendment) Act 2015: Critical Analysis
Tumblr media
This article on 'Legal Aid and Advice (Amendment) Act, 2015: Critical Analysis' was written by an intern at Legal Upanishad.
Introduction
“Government alone will never be able to do it. it is only the people themselves who must utilize the law for the purpose of bringing justice at the doorstep of the large masses of the people of the country.” -Justice PN Bhagwati In this article, the author will conduct a critical analysis of the "Legal Aid and Advice (Amendment) Act, 2015." Furthermore, this article discusses questions such as why legal aid is necessary and how important it is under our constitution. In addition, we shall examine in this article all of the landmark case legislation that gave birth to the concept of free legal assistance and guidance in our country. The author will provide their recommendation and conclusion on the topic at the end of this article.
HISTORY OF LEGAL AID
To begin with, the concept of legal aid is a need for our society especially for a section of society that is poor and needy these people simply cannot afford to fight for their rights in a court of law. This concept of legal aid provides free legal assistance to them. According to the principle of natural justice, every person has a right to be heard in a court of law, it symbolizes fairness and equality among all citizens. It will be a no just state if justice is only available to the privileged class of people. If every citizen is treated equally and justice is available to all then this is how harmony and peace could be maintained in a welfare society. If we go back to the 1970s there was no such concept of free legal in our country. It was the Bombay legal society which has proposed the concept of free legal aid to the poor and needy persons. Later on, a committee was set up under the chairmanship of PN Bhagwat that is the committee on legal aid and legal advice in Bombay. Finally, it was concluded that it is the basic right of the needy person to get access to justice. Hence, the parliament introduced the Legal Service Authority Act, of 1987.
Constitutional Provisions
The legal aid provision in our constitution was introduced by the 42nd Amendment Act of 1976. Wherein, a provision was inserted under Article 39 A in the Directive Principles of State Policy for providing free legal aid to the poor section and the weaker part of our society. This article clearly says that it is the duty of the state to give justice to all. Furthermore, their financial status or other disability cannot be a reason to not give them access to justice. It is the very essence of Article 14, that every citizen shall be treated equally that is equality before the law and equal protection law.
LEGAL AID AND ADVICE (AMENDMENT) ACT, 2015
The very need was felt by the parliament because in our country most of the people are not aware of their basic rights which are enshrined in our constitution. Also, the weaker section and illiterate people simply cannot afford to represent themselves in a court of law and get justice for themselves whenever their rights get violated. Free legal aid becomes important for these people to get access to justice and represent themselves in a court of law. The National Legal Service Authority was formed under the Legal Service Authority Act of 1987 and renders free legal services to the needy and illiterate person. Moreover, it also organizes Lok Adalat for the settlement of any disputes in the matter of civil.
Tumblr media
Legal Aid and Advice (Amendment) Act, 2005
Landmark Case laws
Hussainara Khatoon vs. State of Bihar is one of the leading cases which highlighted the importance of access to justice, the facts of this case were like this there were many men, who were arrested for trivial offences. They were kept in prison for many years without giving any chance to be heard in court and some of them were not even charged with any offence. It happened because they were illiterate and financially unable to afford justice Hence, the court looked into the matter and said to immediately release them and highlighted the importance of free legal aid. Khatri vs State of Bihar, the court, in this case, held that it is the duty of the state to give legal aid to the person who is unable to represent himself. it arises as he first appears in front magistrate and continues till his trials. Also, in the case of New India Assurance Co. Ltd. Vs Gopali, the facts were like this, a person died in an accident and his family cannot afford to file a case against the respondent company the Apex court held that the company must pay compensation the aggrieved family and they also granted free legal aid under Article 39A of our constitution.
Conclusion
The concept of free legal aid is regarded as an essential component of the rule of law. The welfare state needs to treat every citizen equally whatever their financial condition, it is the job of the state to give indigent individuals access to legal services that too at the cost of the State. Cases like Khatri show the need for natural justice and the rule of law, as well as the right to be heard and to have a prosecutor; the atrocities experienced by the prisoner were beyond our comprehension in this case. To be more specific, 24 convicts who were unable to obtain legal counsel due to financial constraints were imprisoned for an extended period of time. The cops blinded those 24 convicts and poured acid into their eyes, which was both regrettable and harsh. Following this, the court took attention and issued appropriate directions to recompense the convicts, as well as take strict action against the Bihar police. There are many horrible cases that go unheard and unnoticed because of a lack of caring; we need to be more attentive to such crimes and educate the uninformed so that justice can be served.

Critical Analysis
De Botton, A. and Armstrong, J., 2016. Art as therapy. London: Phaidon Press, pp 24-27
With art as a practice going through numerous historical changes, it is no surprise that it continues to experience major adjustments in our contemporary world. As of recent, both the importance and necessity of art is continuing to be subject to questioning. Especially with the recent governments desire to control the number of students wanting to study creative courses at university, even going as far as to cut funding to the arts. Not only that but with the recent pandemic, the arts have been questioned as to whether they are of any worth as to many they do not explicitly further society or the economy. As this is the case, it is no wonder that many are questioning the need or even the relevance that art currently has.
The text I have chosen, titled ‘sorrow’, comes from the book ‘Art as Therapy’ by Alain de Botton and John Armstrong. This book discusses the presence and value art has come to possess in the minds of people and society, the book in turn focuses on the multiple roles and functions that art has in our modern world and how they may affect and benefit us. It discusses how art can aid us mentally, more specifically, how it can teach us to experience our emotions, in particular: sorrow, more successfully. With the increasing focus on mental health and wellbeing and its newly appointed importance in our post-pandemic world, I believe that this text is of great importance and is not only applicable to illustrators and reportage artists but is also relevant in our contemporary society.
Alain de Botton has become a frequently talked about individual in recents years, especially with the ever-growing discussion around mental health. De Botton has published several well-acclaimed and best-selling books on subjects such as love and anxiety, which discuss these emotions in a philosophical yet digestible manner that is easy for the reader to understand. This is similarly the case with co-author, John Armstrong who also writes about philosophical themes. As de Botton has a wealth of experience in writing about love and anxiety and why we may experience them, this showcases the author’s understanding of emotion, making him a credible source to use when discussing how art can teach us how to suffer more successfully. It seems that this is not a lone opinion given the positive reviews from well-established institutes such as The Times and The New Yorker, on top of the impressive 263 citations. This shows that the book does indeed reflect the thoughts of many about arts relevancy in our society, not only to artists but its consumers.
The first point de Botton makes in this text is that art can not only validate, but also legitimise our emotions just by simply existing. That our emotions, particularly sorrow, do not need an explanation or reason for their presence, instead sorrow is merely a “part of the contract of life”. De Botton then uses Serra’s sculpture “Fernando Pessoa” as an example to describe this existence. By the sculpture being large and bold, it suggests that the emotion it portrays (sorrow), is ‘unforgiving’ in its occupation of space in our society and is experienced by everyone; therefore it is universal.
This is beneficial to artists as with the increase in modern technology and the tendency to favour the depiction of emotions and current events through photography, many question the relevance that illustrators and reportage artists have today. However, Botton’s point insists that art -and by extension, all disciplines of it- are there to act as a means of expression for the artist and a means of emotional validation for the viewer. With the increasing focus on self-help and mental illness, art therefore plays a key role as it shows people that they are not alone in their experience, therefore it can only benefit society as it alleviates the emotional burdens of its members.
Whilst Botton does highlight the relevance art has in aiding the viewer, he does not acknowledge that art, no matter how obvious the message or meaning may be, will always be subjective. With recent art movements relying on abstract depictions and themes to deliver messages, many artists heavily rely on the audience understanding their interpretation of emotions and events. In the example that De Botton discusses, Serra uses the sculpture of a wall as a bold declaration of sadness to highlight the feeling of sorrow. However, many people may look at this work of art and simply see an old wall and therefore the artist’s personal interpretation of emotion is no longer relatable nor applicable to the viewer and therefore does not validate their feelings, which goes entirely against De Botton’s point.
Secondly, de Botton describes experiences in which sorrow may stem from as ‘unimpressive’ and that through sublimation, art transforms these ‘unimpressive’ experiences into ones of nobility. He also insists that our suffering from sorrow possesses no dignity due to our shame and that art helps one to find the ‘honour’ in these experiences.
However, this is where the limitations in that belief lie. The concept of honour differs greatly depending on not only the individual, but also on the culture we are either addressing or presenting this argument to. The use of the word honour is used in a way that is common in western society, however de Botton does not consider how a reader outside the west may comprehend this definition. In this text, de Botton is assuming that we all share the same understanding of honour that he does, which is not the case. Therefore, this idea that art can find honour in sorrow is not applicable to everyone, and is only to those who share a similar perspective to the author.
Additionally, de Botton does not consider the possibility that not everyone may want to find the honour in their worst experiences. Rather than use art to find honour in these events, using art to find the courage to discuss and later address them, I believe is a better method. As not everything we go through in life must have an honourable meaning, sometimes events may happen for no reason, and are, as de Botton mentions earlier just part of life.
In conclusion, de Botton highlights to not only consumers of art but artists alike that art can act as an emotional release. How the artist may go about depicting sorrow in their practice is up to them, however its interpretation is up to the viewer and whether they wish to view art as a teacher of emotion.

Here's a Twitter thread elaborating on the main points within the provided transcript:
1/ Disagreement with someone on a particular issue doesn't render everything they say useless. It's
important to avoid dismissing individuals entirely based on disagreement. Such an approach goes
against the spirit of Marxism and Marxism-Leninism. #DialogueMatters #OpenMindedness
2/ Working in an ultra-sectarian and fanatical manner, rooted in Western Europe's historical
reformation, is not aligned with Marxist perspectives. Dogmatic fanaticism that rejects all opposing
ideas is thoroughly anti-Marxist. Let's promote nuanced and open discourse. #AntiFanaticism
#NuancedDebate
3/ Within the Marxist community on Twitter, there seems to be a recurring pattern of sectarianism. We
address this issue in our video, exploring why the Western left tends to draw lines and distinctions
based on theories and ideologies, rather than material realities. #Sectarianism #MaterialAnalysis
4/ It's crucial to consider material distinctions and realities rather than solely relying on ideological
divisions. Our in-depth critique of the Western left's sectarian attitude forms the foundation of our
work. Observing this behavior repeated in new ways is deeply concerning. #MaterialReality
#CriticalAnalysis
Let's strive for constructive dialogue and understanding, embracing diverse perspectives within the
Marxist community. Dismissing others

The Giver. [dystopian fiction & brainwashing]
Within the first few pages of The Giver by Lois Lowry, I could see how much control the elders held over the community. I knew, prior to reading this novel, that it was dystopian fiction so I  made my assumptions about the plot, and I was right. This novel, like so many other young adult dystopian fiction novels, follows a basic formula: A teenage protagonist in a seemingly utopian society who realizes that their world is corrupt and subsequently tries to fix it, or at least spread awareness of the transgressions of their leaders. The idea here is that at some point in the past, strict new laws were put in place to make life simpler, safer, and more orderly. In The Giver this is referred to as “sameness”. The elders in this society somehow collected all memories and stored them inside a single person in order to control everyone else. This took away any sense of individuality in appearance or thought. The founding council of elders must have been cruel, cold people to take away color, music and even love from all those who would come after them. That, or perhaps they experienced great tragedy which forced them to make the decisions they did. Either way, I cannot help but feel that in order to preserve what they established they would have made sure that moving forward any future elders would have no more insight than any ordinary member of the community. For this to work, no one could know what they were missing. But then, what if the communities eventually developed back into what they once were?
This is where the story line of Lowry’s masterful work comes from. In order to preserve this simple, safe community of sameness, there would half to be one person who retained the memories of all that came before, “back, and back, and back”. This person, an elder, is called the “receiver of memories” and besides them, all other elders are ignorantly following the procedures put in place for them. While it is not clear how the memories were collected we do know what was taken from the community. They no longer comprehend love, and therefore do not experience it. They uniformly celebrate coming of age altogether once a year, on which day they are told how to dress and style their hair, removing any sense of individual expression. And when they reach puberty they are told to take a pill to suppress their “stirrings”. Just as the Receiver holds all memories of the past, removing certain burdens and aspects of the human condition, the pills eliminate sexual desire and activity. Jonas’s mom has him start taking the pills after he reports that he had a dream, which was sexual in nature, about his friend, Fiona. "...the feeling you described as the wanting? It was your first Stirrings." (Chapter 5, pg. 47). It makes me uncomfortable that the people in this society are being medicated for something they do not comprehend, something which is so natural, and yet must have been deemed dangerous by the founders.
I did find it interesting though, that, because they removed sex from this society, there was no negative connotation linked to these feelings. Jonas was embarrassed to admit that he had this dream, but in the end he knew the “right” thing to do was tell his parents about it. In our society, it is not always comfortable to speak to an adult about these developments. The fact that Jonas was uncomfortable but felt compelled to discuss this with his parents is one positive point in this society. When Jonas later throws his pill away it is a sign that he is gaining wisdom, "Something within him, something that had grown there through the memories, told him to throw the pill away." (Chapter 16, pg. 162). The Receiver of Memories is meant to be the wisest being in all the communities; Jonas was told that he would gain wisdom through the memories he would receive. Until this point we had seen Jonas learn, we saw Jonas gain colors, animals, and nature. But it is not until Jonas experienced both love and pain that he made a conscious choice in his life which could have no other basis than his gaining wisdom. Throwing away the pill was not Jonas's first rebellious act, he had been giving Gabriel memories for a while, but that had been unintentional at first. Throwing away the pill was an intentional act of rebellion against his parents, and against the elders. The more Jonas learns through the memories and about this society, the more he turns against it. Two main turning points are when Jonas discovers love and when he learns the truth behind “release”. After Jonas experiences love he cannot understand why it does not exist in his society. He craves it. And when he learns the truth about “release” he can no longer trust his father or the community anymore.
The book ends when Jonas and Gabriel seem to have escaped the community. But their fate is very open-ended; it is left primarily to the interpretation of the reader. They avoided capture by sharing memories, so who's to say that when they came to the sled and the snowy hill they weren't simply experiencing the very first memory Jonas ever received? It seems more likely that they actually died or are in a state of delirium. It is also possible that Jonas was given the memory of the sled first so that it would be his strongest memory. What if there really are people living outside of the communities? And what if when the communities first began a plan was put into place by a group of rebels for there to be a memory of this sled and hill so that if, someday, a receiver was able to escape, with or without others, they would eventually come to this hill and know what to do? I can imagine then, that there must have been someone living on the outside who, all through the years has been maintaining the sled for whoever was to come.
