Why is Crowley’s tattoo so low in s2?

Hiya! :) It's because Crowley changed his hair and the snek wants to be visible :), this is Crowley in S1 - pretty much no sideburns,

this is Crowley in S2 - you see the sideburns, so for the lil' snek to be visible it sauntered vaguely downwards a bit ;) :).

Let's bust a popular myth!

David Tennant was NOT filming the upcoming Dr Who specials while also filming GO season 2!

Good Omens s2 filmed from Nov 2 2021 - Mar 1 2022; the Doctor Who specials filmed May 3 - July 25 2022.

So... what's with Crowley's s2 shifting sideburns and tattoo? Everything is meant. (And if you're not sure about the crew's over-the-top attention to detail, please read this post about the antique sink recreation.)

It seems like Dr Who could be an easy excuse to mask s3 hints hidden within s2...

Here's the first theory/analysis I've seen, by @f0ul-f13nd. What do YOU think??

And don't get me started on his multiple wigs and headbands during Job, or his trimmed mausoleum mutton chops. (Details with links are filed under "inconsistencies" in my pinned collection of Clues and metas, if you want them!) There's at least one unreliable narrator at play here, but the question is WHY? WHO? WHAT does it MEAN??!

Someone should ask Neil, PROPERLY! (I'm teasing, with the utmost admiration, please don't actually ask him! No magician is going to reveal their trick in the middle of their act.)

I’m trying to find fics that involve Crowleys tattoo being slightly sentient and crawls onto Aziraphale’s skin. A little specific but something I really want to read

Inspired by the photos of S2 Crowley with his serpent sigil lower down his cheek than in S1, and previous HCs about it wandering around at will, some comedy crackfic happened the other day. Crowley’s sigil goes on a little adventure of its own, until Crowley calls in Aziraphale to help find it and return it to its rightful place again…

Why did they move Crowley’s snake tattoo?

Granted that I’m not fond of change, and that David Tennant is sex on a stick no matter what you do with him… but why mess with perfection?

In response to comments, here are images from the Victorian era, showing that his tattoo is fully covered up by his mutton chops:

Having trouble getting Crowley's tattoo right? Fear not! Here's a tiny little tutorial at least on the general shape of it.

Start with a simple pyčoúhelník rhombus, roughly twice as tall as it is wide. It will help guide you.

Lets start from the head. Drawing the head is pretty simple as it's basically a trapezoid or a triangle. Add just a little neck to it, too

This gets trickier. You have to pick a point about quarter way up your rhombus, in the median plane. When you find it, draw a horizontal S, but make the second loop reeeaaally tiny

Draw another horizontal S but reverse the loops (tiny one first, big one second). Start inside the big one you've already drawn and curl around the tiny one

Now we draw a horizontal 6 two times. Start a bit off the middle and draw the 6 with a smaller "belly" and a really long "arm". Draw the larger 6 around it. Note that they should be on the left, in the widest point of your rhombus.

Now draw a question mark twice, so the lines seem to be continuing from your 6s straight to them. The "?" should stretch a bit higher than the 6. (i was a bit off there excuse me)

Go hog wild. Draw a meandering river. Make it thinner as you go up. It should end right at the tip of the rhombus and also touch each side of the rhombus twice along the way.

And this should be somewhat your result! Here's a reference photo of the original for you as well.

Can we talk about how Crowley's snake tattoo is lower on his face in s2, curling around his jaw instead of beside his ear? Is it supposed to symbolize smth, like is his snakyness draining out of him or is it now influencing his mouth more than his ear like in a hear no evil speak no evil kinda way? I feel like it's gotta be more than just a wardrobe thing, especially when every detail in GO is so carefully thought out and ive always loved his tattoo, but I haven't seen anyone else talk abt this

All was light and sound. Crowley emerged from unconsciousness slowly, blinking and squinting at the unforgiving brightness. An overwhelming resonance vibrated his entire being. He could barely process what was happening, couldn’t even remember what had happened before the sharp pain and descent into darkness.

There seemed to be a ground beneath him, also alive with the waves of sound. He managed to sit up, and realized that a now-familiar weight across his shoulders was gone. In a panic, he groped with a hand into the white-out until it encountered the cool smoothness of scales. Gently, he scooped up the snake. Relief washed over him when it moved within his grasp.

Judging by feel only, Crowley settled it into place on his shoulders. He smiled when he felt the flick of a comforting tongue against his cheek. The serpent was his only anchor in a sea of sensory overload. He lifted a hand to cradle the snake’s head against his own. He closed his eyes, taking a moment to appreciate having something here that made sense. The snake leaned into the caress, and Crowley felt the distinction between the two of them begin to dissipate. Soon, his hand touched only the subtle bump of ink under his skin. He pressed his fingers to it, and felt it slither into place below his temple.

Suddenly, the wall of sound made sense to Crowley. It was a Celestial Choir. Hundreds, no, thousands of voices were lifted in song. No wonder it felt like his bones were rattling. He vaguely wondered if he should be singing, too. After all this time, would he even remember how?

Wait. His thoughts were beginning to reshape into coherence. Wasn’t I on a battlefield? His brow scrunched in concentration, trying to pull up the memories. I … I was dancing. With Aziraphale! Crowley’s eyes flew open. It was still so very bright, but now he could see . What he saw frightened him.

I did some checking and am perhaps missing it, but has there ever been an official image of Crowley’s snake tattoo? Has someone from the show posted their process in designing and applying it? I keep seeing interpretations of it, and I wondered if there has been any sort of “here’s how we do it” moment that I am missing.

Neil Gaiman suggested Good Omens’ demons are their creatures, not the human forms underneath (the Ratatouille theory). I really love snakes. I couldn't help finishing that train of thought.

After getting himself exposed to an unintentional overdose of divinity, Crowley starts presenting with some weird symptoms.

Don’t mind me, just a snake keeper finally writing about one, and a very dear snake it is indeed. :D Can be read as a standalone work!

The mark on Crowley's face was not a tattoo.

When Lucifer, still furious and his pride damaged, took out his frustration out on the first thing to catch his attention after the Fall. Rage, possessiveness, and a need to prove that he was not as weak as he felt when he was cast out spurred him into action. He claimed the broken and fallen creature in every way, relishing the confusion and fear. And he left a piece of his power tangled up in the former angel's essence, the only easily visible sign being a shape manifesting on his eventual corporeal body. But rather quickly, Lucifer found other things to occupy himself and the demon was sent up to Earth to cause some trouble.

Six thousand years later and newly-enraged by the betrayal and halted apocalypse, Lucifer finally decides to make use of that power that he left behind. The devil is not one to surrender something that he'd claimed so easily. And the traitor would pay. He would make Crowley suffer.

Mind the warnings and tags on that last one!
