"...THE SKULL AND PELVIS PLACE IT IN THE TYRANNOSAUROID SUPERFAMILY. LIKE MANY OTHER THEROPODS, IT ALMOST CERTAINLY HAD FEATHERS."
PIC INFO: Resolution at 1387x1387x1913 -- Spotlight on the Guanlong wucaii, a small to mid-sized early tyrannosaur and a member of the family Proceratosauridae. Unlike your typical tyrannosaur, Guanlong wucaii had long arms and three-fingered hands for grabbing and ripping. But the shape of its teeth, and features in the skull and pelvis place it in the tyrannosauroid superfamily. Like many other theropods, it almost certainly had feathers. Artwork by William Stout, c. 2009.

INTRODUCTION: "Named from the Chinese words guan, meaning "crown," and long, meaning "dragon," in reference to its flashy head-crest, the most elaborate of any known theropod dinosaur. The species name comes from the Chinese word wucai meaning "five colours" and refers to the multi-hued rocks at Wucaiwan, the badlands where the fossils were found.
Guanlong wucaii is one of the most primitive tyrannosaurs known. It hunted its prey 95 million years before T. rex lived."

#OnThisDay in 2006, the basal tyrannosauroid Guanlong was named.
This carnivorous #dinosaur’s name means “crown dragon,” and it lived in the Late Jurassic in what is now China
Guanlong was relatively small and had a crest on top of its head, and may have had feathers
Two specimens were found, an adult that was 12 years old and a 6 year old juvenile that was still growing. It’s possible the adult trampled the juvenile after the juvenile died

Guanlong wucaii
('crown dragon, multicoloured/five-coloured')
Tyrannosauroidea Proceratosauridae*
The 'multicoloured' or 'five-coloured' of the species name refers to the rainbow rocks the two specimens were found in, stacked one atop t'other, with some other little animals thrown in--even another proceratosaurid, Dilong paradoxus. All these animals were literally squished and drowned inside the big chowder pot of a giant sauropod footprint. Tragic event for them = really cool fossil for us.
Shishugou Formation, Dzungaria, Xinjiang, China.
Upper Jurassic, ~160 Ma.
*Proceratosaurids were once thought to be ancestral to ceratosaurs; now understood to be tyrannosauroids

Archovember Day 6: Guanlong wucaii
Long, long before Tyrannosaurus rex stomped its way through North America, a very different Tyrannosauroid lived across the world in late Jurassic China. Guanlong means “crown dragon,” and one look at it tells us why. This small Tyrannosauroid had a delicately thin yet large crest on its head, likely used for display.
Unlike later tyrannosauroids, Guanlong had long, three-fingered hands that it could use to grab and tear at prey. Being a mid-size predator, it would have hunted smaller dinosaurs but also served as prey for larger theropods like the allosaurid Yangchuanosaurus. It was about the size of the Raptors on Jurassic Park.

About GUANLONG:
name meaning: "crowned dragon" (very fancy name for a very fancy dinosaur hehe)
time period: Late Jurassic
family: proceratosauridae
interesting facts: Guanlong is a relative of a well known Tyrannosaurus. Crests on their head were for mating display. (Those little chicks in my drawing are wrong. Younglings probably didn't have them at that age)
Check out my other dinosaurs from this challenge:

Roar
Summary: Faith just wanted to see the Roar Dinosore.
Pairing: none
Notes: Thanks to @the-shadow-of-atlantis for sending me something with Jen and Faith’s parents which inspired this
Faith sighed as she walked slowly through the museum. It’s funny how things change when you get older. Things seem smaller than before, less overbearing. Not that the short girl had ever been very intimidated by things being bigger than her. Mostly because EVERYTHING was bigger than her.
She chuckled as she looked up at the huge rendering of the Sauroposeidon.
“Roar”
“Nick, Nick grab her,” Debbie said motioning to their 3-year-old daughter who was ready to dash off at a moment's notice. Laughing her husband grabbed his daughter swinging her up onto his shoulders. Faith let out a loud squeal of excitement much to the annoyance of many other patrons at the Dinosaur exhibit.
Taking Annabella’s hand Debbie followed her husband, their bodyguard Kyo slowly directing Jennifer who had her nose buried in a book of facts about the large reptiles. Next, to her, Dick chuckled as she almost walked into a glass case before the muscular bodyguard quickly steered her away.
“I wish you were my Mom” Annabella whispered almost so quietly Debbie didn’t catch it. Glancing down, the young woman gave her niece's hand a squeeze.
“Here’s the secret little Wayne, you don’t get to chose your parents but you can choose your family. I promise I will always be part of that family if you want.”
Annabella nodded before Faith’s loud laughs broke into their conversation.
“Mommy! ROAR!” Faith said pointing up to the Sauroposeidon. Nick laughed bouncing her up and down letting out little growls.
“That’s a Sauroposeidon” Jen said looking up from her book, “It’s a leaf eater and probably didn’t go Roar”
Faith sighed looking up at the Dinosaur then down at her dad putting her hands over his mouth to stop his growling, “no roar daddy”
“Well lead the way Jennifer and show us a Roar,” Nick said motioning for the elder daughter to lead. Shutting her book Jennifer chuckled checking the directory before leading them toward another case.
The dinosaur in front of them was much smaller. It looked quite menacing with a large fin on its head and a mouth filled with teeth.
“This is a Guanlong, they are thought to be related to the T-Rex and from China. After its discovery, it was named by Xu Xing in 2006. The name means “Crown dragon.” And yes… they do go roar” Jen said matter a factly as Dick laughed.
“ROAR!!!” Faith and Nick yelled at the Dragon, then Nick glanced at the other kids,
“Come on… you know you want too.”
Jennifer laughed putting her book under her arm before baring her teeth “ROAR!” Annabella and Dick followed through peels of laughter.
“That one! That one!” Faith said pointing to a bird looking dinosaur a few feet away.
“Oh that’s a Troodon” Jennifer said not even having to look at her book, “It’s part of the bird family and had a very large brain for its small size. Many believe it the was the smartest Dinosaur.”
“I want the roar one.” Faith frowned looking down at her father who smiled looking up at his daughter.
“But you are the roar one, you need the smart one. Like Mommy and me.”
“Who’s the smart one and who’s the roar?” Debbie asked looking up from the feathered animal in front of them. Nick smiled taking a step forward giving her a small kiss.
“Do I even need to say smartie pants?”
-Present-
“Faith?” The brunette turned to see Tim standing a few feet away, his hands clutching the straps of his backpack. “Are you here for the school project too?”
“Isn’t that on native American culture? And Due in a month?”
Tim laughed shrugging, “Yeah but never too early to start.”
“Ok smartie pants.” Faith giggled, “No I was just on my way back from a dance audition.”
The smile slowly faded from the teenaged boy’s face, “Oh, how did that go?”
The short girl shrugged, memories of her getting right up to the steps of the dance studio before turning around and runny away flooded her memory. Reminding her why she was here. To try and find them. Gain some sort of clarity, remind her why she was doing what she was doing. Try and understand why now that they were gone everything that use to be so easy was so hard.
“Yeah, I don’t think I got it though.”
“You are always practicing I have a hard time believing that you weren’t amazing.”
“Thanks… wanna check out the Dinosaurs with me? The Troodon is my favorite, did you know they think it may have been the smartest of the dinosaurs?”
“Oh really?”
