i think one of the most wonderful traits of wei wuxian is how socially competent he is, which is why it always annoys me if he is mischaracterized as someone who is unaware about how those around him feel, just because of the way his relationship with lan wangji pans out in the books. the dynamic between them was extremely multifaceted and what seemed obvious to us was very rightfully NOT obvious to wei wuxian and he hardly had time to sort those feelings out, given the kind of harrowing ordeals he was going through. but that aside–the way wei wuxian’s “social competence” manifests isn’t just social courage–in that, the risk of embarassment or self-consciousness doesn’t stop his self expression–or just his general forwardness and social butterfly tendencies but also–and imo, most importantly–his perceptiveness and astute reading of people around him which comes from a deep understanding of the human social element, at the individual and the societal level.
he has full awareness of how his station is looked down upon in the cultivation world and so while others in his situation may bend or break–wei wuxian cleverly toes the line between the two until taking a stance becomes necessary. he deeply understands the ugly dynamics running within the jiang family and clan and acts accordingly–be it his prompt efforts to placate jiang cheng or his conscious silence when madame yu is in a mood or even his acceptance of the whipping in lieu of restoring stability for the clan. despite his personal biases against jin zixuan, he can recognise his bravery. even his scandalous move to begin undressing in the cave shows that he knows exactly what would make lan wangji tick.
hell, i’d say even his initial thought about how the resentment of the dead can be redirected towards a target shows his striking comprehension of how emotions work in general. what’s more, he’s able to recognise the machinations nie huaisang had employed and he was also aware of the bigger picture associated with how fickle and easily swayed mob mentality was when everyone took part in bashing jin guangyao when certain truths came to light. when he was first brought back to life, he quickly and correctly deduced what kind of life mo xuanyu must have led and how he could act in order to easily humiliate the mo family. he empathised with jin ling and yet realised how he was brought up left something to be desired and so, tried to inculcate some of his own highly regarded values to him.
the deft manner in which he handled the juniors speaks for itself–a good teacher will always have good communication skills and wei wuxian went above and beyond just “good”. his people skills on nighthunts are extremely helpful–his ability to make tongues loose simply by charming people is highlighted more than once. just off the top of my head–him politely appealing to jin guangshan about the wen remnants and apologising for “intruding”, him readily handing in his sword at the indoctrination camps, him suggesting to jiang cheng that he should leave the clan once he was at the burial mounds–all of this (and much much more) demonstrates wei wuxian’s competence at guaging complex social dynamics, which is why, when he goes against the current and stands firm, it is a deliberate, well thought out decision, one made after considering the risks and repercussions, and that makes wei wuxian’s stance at the end that much more powerful. he is not stumbling his way through life, is not unheeding of his social status, is not a “mad genius with poor social skills”. hell, i would say wei wuxian’s ability to see straight through people is more impressive than even his insane intellect and to reduce that aspect of him feels like a disservice to his character. because when it comes down to it, the fact of the matter is that the murky social world through wei wuxian’s lens is actually astonishingly clear.
#let wwx being the socially competent fellow that he is#this weird himbofication of him when it comes to strictly social matters is actually bizarre#we are given this rare rounded character let’s try and not flatten him out#ofc this doesn’t mean wwx is some omniscient god who knows everything running in a person’s head or#that he doesn’t make social fumbles#but just that he’s really good at avoiding those situations most of the time#actually the only other place i can think of (and i don’t consider the romance as an eg at all) is the icebreaking with the wen remnants#there he was slightly unaware of how their respect for him had significantly developed and so had their care but he was quick to settle in#wei wuxian meta#wei wuxian appreciation#wei wuxian#mdzs meta#mdzs#mo dao zu shi

Honestly dragon age will be like hey I have an idea for a female elf and they literally always slap. In dao we start off strong with some female elf background characters like Shianni my beloved. But then we have; Velanna. Merrill. Talis. Briala. Sera. Like I'm sorry are those just not the five of the best characters in Bioware canon? Like. Just hit after hit after hit. Female elves; what can't they do?
#dragon age#dai#dao#da2#merrill#sera#brialla#like seriously tho#even tho i dont think the veilguard companions are as developed or good#bellara also gives us an excellent female elf and if theyd been more brave with her and the elves in general she would be on this list#just hit after hit after hit

kay kay- so this a my first pass at trying to define the style and features of the five great sects and specific families in mdzs- starting with the wei family and the clothing of an average inner sect disciple! i mostly referenced fashion between the warring states period and tang dynasty and i focused on backing up specific stylistic choices from the donghua with garments that match the lifestyle and image of the sect.
design notes below cut:
- cangse sanren has a relatively flat nose, silver eyes, thin arched eyebrows, dimples, curly hair, prominent cheekbones, and a smirk- she’s supposed to look cheerful warm and mischievous
- wei cangze has a thinner face and longer sharper nose, warm black and deep set eyes, straight warm toned hair, long eyelashes, yunmeng style braids, and a prominent mole beneath his lip- he’d supposed to look reliable and sharply intelligent with a clipper temperament than cssr
- wei ying is mostly supposed to look like his mother, inheriting most of her coloration and major traits, but he has a few small thugs from his father, namely a warmer hair and eye color, his mole, and his deeper set eyes- i wanted to make it obviously visible that wwx is cssr’s son and subtler that he’s wxz’s to make madam yu’s fears a bit less silly (cause he looks almost exactly like his dad in the animation)
- i’m attempting to develop a distinct visual identity for each major sect based off of available textiles, stylistic decisions, and environmental restrictions + the unique techniques and culture of each sect and how it would impact the builds and fighting styles of the disciples
- ultimately, i’d like to make each sects clothing recognizable in both silhouette and without color and i’d like to see the characters faces distinguished by more than hairstyle and eye color!
#mdzs#mdzs fanart#wei wuxian#cangse sanren#wei changze#mo dao zu shi#grandmaster of demonic cultivation#design development progress!#i did so much flipping research for that clothing breakdown#like i was over here reading scholarly articles#if anyone has any headcanons for the appearance of the characters#that would be *very* helpful

soulmate AU
[warning: kind of depressing]
imagine a soulmate AU whose setting is pretty much the same as MDZS canon, except with three additions:
classic soulmate au setup: everyone's has a unique birthmark design. your heaven-mandated soulmate is the only other person in the world with the exact same birthmark. so if you find someone with the exact same birthmark as you (doesn't have to be in the same location on the body), then you know that person is your soulmate. everyone in the world is supposed to have exactly one soulmate birthmark.
your soulmate birthmark shows up with you're.....idk sometime in your teens.
currently, the law (idk how the MDZS worldbuilding works so let's just say that the emperor's decreed it be so or something lol) is that you are only allowed to marry your soulmate. and if your soulmate is identified, then you must marry them immediately. thus, if you don't want to marry your soulmate, then you have to keep the fact that you are soulmates hidden forever.
note that two people being soulmates does not guarantee that they are actually compatible. as it turns out, jiang fengmian and yu ziyuan are soulmates in this universe.....but their marriage is every bit as disastrous as it is in canon. because of this, both jiang cheng and jiang yanli are very pessimistic about how their future relationships with their soulmates will go; similarly, wei wuxian hates the concept of soulmates entirely.
now, wei wuxian's soulmate birthmark showed up during the cloud recesses arc. both he and jiang cheng saw this soulmark, so they both know the design. but wei wuxian has always hated the idea of soulmates, because he hates the idea of being forcibly tied to someone, so this is a miserable experience for him. he is very vocal about this being a miserable experience for him.
simultaneously, wei wuxian finds out that lan wangji does not have a soulmate birthmark. this isn't impossible, but is still unusual, given that almost everyone in their generation has had theirs show up already. so wei wuxian immediately latches onto lan wangji.
jiang cheng refuses to show wei wuxian his soulmate birthmark. wei wuxian bothers and bothers jiang cheng about it, but against all odds, jiang cheng actually succeeds in hiding his soulmate birthmark from wei wuxian.
events play out as they do in canon: lotus pier falls, the golden core transfer happens (no influence on wei wuxian or jiang cheng's soulmate marks), the sunshot campaign happens, wei wuxian runs off with the wen remnants, wei wuxian becomes public enemy number one. during this time, the design of wei wuxian's soulmate birthmark becomes public knowledge; it also becomes public knowledge that no other person with this birthmark has been identified. naturally, people begin talking about how, because of his evil nature, wei wuxian has been cursed with a soulmate birthmark that no one else has, signifying that he's been doomed by the heavens to die alone. this does kind of get to wei wuxian, but he pretends it doesn’t.
events continue to play out as they do in canon: wei wuxian kicks the bucket, wei wuxian comes back to life, jiggy gets his shit wrecked, wangxian swan off into the sunset together. notably, in all the time that passed, lan wangji never developed any soulmate birthmark at all. this is basically unheard of post-timeskip, as every adult lan wangji's age should have developed one already. somehow, the resurrected wei wuxian finds out about this before wangxian actually get together; this then makes lan wangji special in wei wuxian's eyes. to wei wuxian, lan wangji is the one person in the world who has escaped the curse of the soulmate birthmark.
postcanon, wangxian want to get married, but are legally unable to because they aren't soulmates. wangxian decide Screw That, and set their minds on changing the law in this setting: they will find some way to have the law saying that [only soulmates can get married to each other] overturned, such that people can freely marry whoever tf they want.
during this process, wei wuxian and jiang cheng mostly reconcile. thus, when wangxian begin (the ancient fantasy chinese equivalent of) the legal battle to overturn the soulmate decree, they have jiang cheng's full support.
and eventually......wangxian succeed.
wangxian's success in changing the law is met with widespread acclaim, because as it turns out this law was already quite unpopular. people dont want to be forced to marry their "soulmates" just bc of some random birthmark, especially when the soulmate pairings aren't even compatible half the time (see the jiang parents). moreover, over the course of this (ancient fantasy chinese equivalent of a) legal battle, wangxian became symbols of this struggle in the public eye; the design of wei wuxian's soulmate birthmark in particular became a symbol of the tyrannies of the enforced soulmate system.
thus, with the law changed, wangxian are able to legally get married. jiang cheng hosts the wangxian wedding and makes it an incredibly successful (and elaborate, and expensive) event. during the afterparty, though, jiang cheng gets absolutely sauced.
one year later, wangxian decide they want an equally big party celebrating the one-year anniversary of their wedding. jiang cheng hosts this one too. and, once again, during the afterparty, jiang cheng gets absolutely sauced.
for the last 15+ years, jiang cheng has been incredibly fastidious about wearing high collars and keeping everything in that area covered. this is because the scars left on him from his time getting tortured by the wens during the sunshot campaign crept up to almost the throat area, and he didn't want anyone to see them. now, though, as wei wuxian helps an absolutely piss-drunk jiang cheng back to the latter's rooms, wei wuxian pulls open the cross of jiang cheng's robes in order to help him breathe, and in doing so sees the other thing jiang cheng has been hiding for the last 15+ years: a soulmate birthmark, completely identical to the one branded upon wei wuxian's own skin.
from jiang cheng's pov:
back in the cloud recesses arc, jiang cheng's soulmate birthmark manifested the day after wei wuxian's showed up. since jiang cheng had already seen wei wuxian's soulmate birthmark, jiang cheng immediately recognized his own as being identical to wei wuxian's, thus marking him and wei wuxian as soulmates.....however, wei wuxian had already spent the entire day yelling about how he despised the concept of soulmates and how how he hated the idea of being forcibly tied to someone, so jiang cheng decided to keep his mouth shut.
as time passed, wei wuxian's hatred for the soulmate system only grew; furthermore, wei wuxian became increasingly obsessed with lan wangji, who did not have a soulmate birthmark and therefore represented freedom in wei wuxian's eyes. so jiang cheng continued to keep his mouth shut: he could not reasonably expect wei wuxian to drop all of his doubts and dislikes of the soulmate system (which were entirely reasonable, in jiang cheng's eyes; after all, jiang cheng had also seen the trainwreck of his parents' marriage and his parents were actual soulmates) , just because wei wuxian's soulmate was actually jiang cheng. there was a certain element of Cope to this as well: jiang cheng fully expected that, if wei wuxian ever found out about jiang cheng being his soulmate, wei wuxian's reaction would be an immediate rejection plus a distancing of himself from jiang cheng. but if jiang cheng never told wei wuxian, then they could continue to be at least friends, and maybe jiang cheng could entertain himself with a fantasy once in a while of wei wuxian being happy about being jiang cheng's soulmate.
then shit started hitting the fan with qishan wen's aggression and the sunshot campaign and all that, so there just wasn't a good time to bring the issue up. and then, after the sunshot campaign ended, jiang cheng legitimately considered telling wei wuxian the truth. but wei wuxian was still pulling away; he obviously had something going on but also clearly did not want to share. if jiang cheng revealed to wei wuxian that they were actually soulmates - moreover, if anyone else found out - then wei wuxian would be legally obligated to marry jiang cheng. however, from what jiang cheng could tell, wei wuxian did not want to be tied to jiang cheng. wei wuxian already hated the compulsory nature of the soulmate system; furthermore, wei wuxian didn't even seem to want to be tied to jiang cheng as first disciple of yunmeng jiang. so jiang cheng felt that forcibly tying wei wuxian to himself in this manner would be unacceptable, and would make him too similar to his mom.
then the shit with the wen remnants went down, confirming in jiang cheng's eyes all of the above.
and then, what was jiang cheng supposed to say? "well we're actually soulmates (which i never told you about), so please give up on all your moral convictions and come back"? "please, i beg you - don't leave me"? no way. then wei wuxian died, and well that was that.
since by this point, the exact design of wei wuxian's soulmate birthmark had become public knowledge, jiang cheng also had political reasons to keep his matching soulmate birthmark hidden. jiang cheng was already catching shit from everyone else for being the yiling patriarch's former sect leader; if the public found out that he was also the yiling patriarch's soulmate on top of that, people would start holding him even more responsible for all the shit wei wuxian did. so jiang cheng continued to keep his soulmate birthmark secret.
then wei wuxian came back....except wei wuxian continuously avoided him and instead ran around everywhere with lan wangji, so there was no way jiang cheng could bring it up then.
and then, by the time wei wuxian and jiang cheng reconciled, wei wuxian was already up in arms about having the soulmate marriage law dissolved. and increasingly the movement to do so, symbolized by the wangxian relationship, gathered momentum. as it turned out, jiang cheng himself was fully in support of the movement to have the soulmate marriage law dissolved: there was a case during the timeskip in which two of jiang cheng's disciples, who were not soulmates, wanted to get married. jiang cheng actually supported their relationship and wanted to officiate their marriage - except, when he tried to do so, actual representatives from the emperor showed up and said that he couldn't do that because it went against the emperor's will. so jiang cheng also opposes this law, because how dare these assholes tell him what he can and cannot do in his own goddamn sect.
and then the law was overturned and wangxian got married.....except, by then, wangxian had become symbols of the anti-soulmate movement in the eyes of the public. and even though the majority of the population supported the anti-soulmate movement, there was still a significant faction within the imperial court that sought to reinstate the soulmate marriage law - and, because of the symbolic importance wangxian held in the eyes of the public with regard to to this issue, said faction was only waiting for problems to arise within wangxian that they could use as ammo to argue that the soulmate marriage law was necessary.
thus, even after the soulmate marriage law was overturned, jiang cheng continued to keep his own soulmate birthmark a secret.....until, one year later, wei wuxian found out about it. oops.
#mdzs#mo dao zu shi#wei wuxian#jiang cheng#lan wangji#chengxian#wangxian#yanyan speaks#yanyan summaries#anyways in my mind “soulmates” have absolutely zero cosmic significance#all it is is a phenomena by which two people develop the same birthmark#all other importance is culturally ascribed

Summary: This cannot mean what he thinks it means. Wei Ying is probably dating someone. No, he is probably married. Lan Zhan will surely meet his wife the next time they spend time together, and then he will have to erase all of the scenarios he has created in his mind. Then he will have to forgive himself for the ridiculous conclusions he has jumped to. Kay's comments: Lan Zhan is really going through it in this stories as a chronic overthinker, but luckily, he has a very good therapist and Wei Ying can be very direct when given a hint! Excerpt:“You’re here!” Wei Ying exclaims, and Lan Zhan can’t help but wonder if he’s imagining the excitement in his voice. Why would Wei Ying be excited to see him? “I am,” he answers, unsure of what else there is to say. For some reason, this response makes Wei Ying giggle. When he pulls Lan Zhan toward the bar and offers to buy him a drink, Lan Zhan can do nothing but follow. “Water, please,” he manages to say, and Wei Ying fulfills his request with a smile that could light up the entire city. When Lan Zhan returns home later that evening, he goes over this interaction in his mind for nearly an hour, committing every detail to memory. Finally, he falls asleep.

Unlocking DAO Potential with Justtry Technologies
In this fast-paced blockchain world, Decentralized Autonomous Organizations are changing the landscape of how a business operates on governance and decision-making. If you've never heard of DAOs or are thinking about bringing them into your business, this blog will break down their potential and how Justtry Technologies can assist you in implementing them effectively.
What's a DAO?
The term DAO itself generally describes a blockchain-based organization ruled by rules that are written into smart contracts. Such smart contracts automate processes like decision-making, voting, and financial transactions without a centralized requirement of control. It is essentially based upon voting conducted by the collective community as well as everything being transparent in nature, hence building trust and increasing efficiency.
Why Does Your Business Need a DAO?
If looking to decentralize your decision-making process, cut your operational costs, and increase transparency, then DAO development will be critical to your business. By eliminating the central authority and using an automated, trustless system, DAOs inject transparency and fairness at the core of your operations. This is especially for startups and large enterprises looking to stay ahead of the game in this fast-paced world of digital.
The Benefits of DAO Development
Decentralized Governance: The organization follows a democratic model where the proposal is put up to vote before all the token holders.
Cost Efficiency: Because smart contracts perform most of the automation, it eliminates the middlemen in most cases and consequently cuts down operation cost
Transparency and Trust : All Decisions on the blockchain platform provide a transparent record for any stakeholder in the system.
Community Empowerment: The chance for the members of the community to have a direct say about the matters in terms of decisions empower the community to be more interactive.
Types of DAOs and Their Applications
Not something that fits all. Based on your business, you may have protocol DAOs for governing blockchain protocols, investment DAOs for making collective investment decisions, service DAOs for offering decentralized services to the community. We, at Justtry Technologies, provide customized DAOS based on your business needs.
Why Choose Justtry Technologies for DAO Development?
Tailored DAO Solutions to ensure you get the specific outcome
Smart Contracts expertise to ensure seamless auto-execution and governance
Future-proof Secure and Scalable Platforms
End-to-end Support from ideation, through development processes into deployment

Here's another Veilguard Critique:
I wish there were more opportunities for approval/disapproval, but not in the sense of like "I want to be rude to my companions!"
I like approval/disapproval systems in the sense that they're an additional level of character-building. I think this is something BG3 did very well- small actions, dialogue options, and ways you interact with the world (even when not plot-relevant) trigger minor amounts of approval/disapproval, which very much informed you of the type of people your companions are and what they value.
It doesn't always land- for example, in DAO, Morrigan disapproves if you reject the Tevinter magister's deal to use blood magic to empower you at the cost of the elven slaves he's captured. When you're playing a Tabris Warden, that disapproval strikes a very odd chord because it makes it feel like Morrigan is disapproving of you literally saving your friends, neighbors and FATHER over empowering yourself. Given her line of dialogue beforehand, it's clear she thinks it's interesting from a magical perspective and we know blood magic isn't like. Inherently evil? But the disapproval still feels extra off-putting in that situation.
That's one of the approve/disapprove system shortcomings- it can't always take into account the nuances of player character decisions/backstory and how each player roleplays their MC. This is one of the reasons I think BG3 manages ok- the MASSIVE amount of choices gives it many opportunities to come up, which I think allows for more space for nuance because of the sheer variety of things people are reacting to.
And this is something that I wish Veilguard had a little more of. Not in the same sense as BG3- I don't need my companions having an opinion on every minor decision I make ALL the time or anything- but like. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head that's a major chance for companion disapproval is how you decide to deal with the First Warden. I've run into a few small dialogue options that trigger disapproval (one where you joke about Lucanis during the funeral arrangements with Teia, and one in the Taash-Emmrich squabble) but otherwise there's not a lot in there.
I get why the game is the way that it is- it's a hard line to walk with "are there consequences for too much disapproval" and "we need all of the companions to trust Rook as a leader in order for the story to work" and I think they did the best that they could.
It's not a "the game is overly positive" problem for me so much as it is I wish we got a little more insight into what the companions like and dislike with it. It's an extra dimension of character building that I'm not sure the game utilized to its fullest.
#dragon age#veilguard#random musings#as I fall into the inevitable veilguard vs bg3 comparison hole#recency bias at its finest#but I think it also helps that they're games of the same generation#like you can't QUITE compare Veilguard to a DAO or a DA2 on systems entirely#because those are games from a previous generation#of technology AND game development#but that's a separate issue#I just like it when game systems are used to emphasize the character building and narrative#and I think it could have been utilized better in veilguard#veilguard critical#once again I GUESS
