Chicago HS3 pop coordinates deep dive - Wrigley Building, Lou Malnati's pizza, and Larry Bird
Here's Harry in 2017 at HS1 tour asking the audience to vote for Giordanos vs Lou Malnati's as best Chicago pizza. Lou won and Harry made a joke about his own cheesiness:

One of the highlights of Lou Malnati's is the uniform of basketball legend Larry Bird. Larry Bird played for the Celtics and pretty famous here as he's an Indiana native. If you don't know, the NW part of the state is basically a Chicago suburb.
Here's 2 photos of a Larry Bird:

Greater sandhill cranes near Medaryville, Indiana, in 2017.(E. Jason Wambsgans / Chicago Tribune)
Thousands of them have been flying over our neighborhood the past few weeks, telling us that spring is here, notwithstanding all the other doom and gloom. If they are flying low enough and there are plenty in the V-formation, or several flocks are flying overhead, one can hear them inside with the windows closed. They are loud and fun to watch. Excerpt from this Chicago Tribune story:
Chicagoans are once again thrilling to one of the region’s most dramatic signs of spring: the return of flocks of crimson-capped, 5-foot tall, loudly bugling sandhill cranes from as far away as Georgia and Florida. Neighbors have been alerting neighbors, Facebook birding pages have lit up with sightings, and text alerts have ricocheted back and forth among cellphones: “The sandhills are coming! The sandhills are coming!”
Sandhills like to travel with the wind to their backs, and tend to favor inland areas, not the shores of Lake Michigan, although there are exceptions. In 2016, when an estimated 30,000 sandhills flew over the city in a single day, flocks were spotted in lakeside neighborhoods such as Lincoln Park, according to DNAinfo.
Almost wiped out from lands east of the Mississippi River in the 1930s, sandhills are among several large-bird comeback stories in the region, with approximately 97,800 birds in 2018, a 37% increase over 2017, when there were 71,400, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
With studies showing declines in small-bird populations, particularly insect-eating varieties, the cranes’ annual return has additional meaning.“Sandhill cranes are a bird of hope for me,” said Eric Gyllenhaal, 69, who monitors local birds for the Bird Conservation Network.

Illinois obituaries and death notices, 1985 to rent. Find your ancestry info and recent death notices for relatives and friends. Matthew De Leon, 25, of Chicago's Portage Park neighborhood, was convicted of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm for the May 14, 2017, attack outside the condo building in the 600 block. Although the chicken salad sandwich had won the hearts of many, the cornbeef panini grabbed my heart in San Francisco and brought it back to bob-o-rinos.

Cook's First County Fair Since 1948—in a Changing Portage Park
The northwest side neighborhood needed a shot in the arm. Cook County needed a regular fairgrounds. The result? Chicago’s first 4-H style fair in seven decades.
September 13, 2018, 12:48 pm
Folks on a beer run at the Portage Park Binny's last weekend might've caught an unusual scene in the liquor store's back lot: A bona-fide county fair, complete with hay bales, bag tosses, bluegrass, Silkie chickens, and a whole lot of vendors slinging goodies from windswept tents.
For the first time in decades, a version of the Cook County Fair went off in the city — this one called County Fair Chicago and organized by the Six Corners Association, a nonprofit advocating for economic development in Portage Park.
It's been 70 years since the Chicago area had a county fair. Even before its most recent iteration, an eleven-day stint at Soldier Field in 1948, the fair was sporadic and shape-shifting, migrating between Forest Preserve land and makeshift lots on the South Side and in neighboring suburbs. In fact, according to a 2016 WBEZ report, Cook County’s failure to secure regular fairgrounds is largely to blame for the event's inconsistency.
A Binny's parking lot, it turns out, gets the job done — especially in a marriage of convenience with Portage Park. For years, the Six Corners Association and groups like it have tried to draw residents and businesses to Portage Park's ailing shopping district, presently home to hulking storefronts vacated by Sears and Bank of America.
So when Portage Park resident and SCA head Kelli Wefenstette heard WBEZ's report on the erratic fair, she got to work on a 'unique, signature festival,' she says. 'We didn't want to do what's happening in other parts of the city already.'
Portage Park's gusty first County Fair this weekend comprised mostly new businesses, and some that don't even have brick-and-mortar stores yet. At one tent, Portage Park resident Catherine Siebel promoted her soon-to-open cooking school and shop, Fearless Cooking. At another, entrants in the fair’s 4-H–style competition showcased handmade clothes, recipes, and floral arrangements.
Wefenstette credits the influx of new businesses to a plan the SCA cooked up with alderman John Arena, the Department of Housing and Economic Development, and local residents and business owners. The document outlines a handful of practices for attracting — and retaining — businesses to the area. It also calls for infrastructural improvements for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. (They counseled, for instance, against a long-desired Metra stop on Irving Park Road).
Since the Chicago Plan Commission adopted their vision in 2013, dozens of new businesses have moved into the Six Corners shopping district. Arena sees the effort as a means of accommodating the wave of young parents moving west in search of family-friendly neighborhoods with amenities. “That’s why homeowners are buying $600,000 homes across the way,” he said on Sunday, gesturing across the lot to a row of the newly built homes, some still wrapped in Tyvek. “They want to get in their strollers and walk to the corner and have everything they want at their fingertips.”
That’s certainly a draw for Rafa Esparza, a former sous chef at Momotaro and A-10 who’s leaving fine dining to open a bookstore/coffee shop hybrid, Finom, on Irving Park Road. “I live in Pilsen, where gentrification is a big thing, so I’m always mindful,” he says. “I don’t want to (open the shop) in places that are being actively gentrified.
'But this neighborhood is unique in that it’s majority homeowners. Development culture thrives on turnover. They want people in and out every two years.”
Esparza's shop won't open for another month; at this weekend’s fair, he tended to his friend Hipolito Sanchez’s mobile barbeque trailer, where a pig roasted over applewood. Still, Esparza appreciates the sense of community in Portage Park. “This is for real what Chicago culture is. People walk in the door and say, ‘Hey man, what’s up? When you guys opening?’ It’s so refreshing.'
It wasn't just Portage Parkers at the weekend's fair, either. On Sunday, Justin Kesselring and Ryan Burns rode their bikes up from their South Loop home. They'd expected a bigger turnout, but were no less excited to watch country blues band Devil in a Woodpile and chow down on roasted pig. “I almost feel like this is the last festival of the season,” Kesselring said.
At the center of it all was a changing Portage Park. “How long ago did they put in this Culver’s here?” asked Devil in a Wood Pile front man Rick Sherry from the stage, having just covered Ray Charles’s 'I’ve Got a Woman.'
“It looks brand spanking new. I can feel the heat coming off of it.”

PORTAGE PARK — Jessica Trudeau was just putting her 2-year-old daughter down for an afternoon nap around 1 p.m. when she heard a muffled boom from the second floor of her Portage Park home.
At first, Trudeau didn't think much of it — perhaps her husband, Michael, was fixing something, she thought.
Dating A Guy From Portage Park Illinois Map
But when she came back downstairs, ready to shoo her 7-year-old daughter outside to play on a beautiful spring afternoon, her front yard had been taken over by nearly a dozen police officers — and a 16-year-old boy lay dead right outside her front door.
'It was surreal,' Trudeau said Monday. 'It was my worst nightmare.'
Giovanni Mathos, 16, died after being shot in his head about 1 p.m. Sunday in the 5800 block of West Patterson Avenue, authorities said.
Trudeau said her older daughter saw Giovanni lying in the street.
'I want to erase that from her mind,' Trudeau said.
Heather Cherone says it's a rare shooting for this area:
Giovanni, who lived in the 5500 block of West Henderson Street, about a mile from where he was shot, was walking with two others when a silver or gray car pulled up and people inside began shouting gang slogans, said Officer Jose Estrada, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department.
Giovanni, a gang member according to police, and his companions shouted back, Estrada said.
A man got out of the car and fired once at Giovanni, striking him in his head. He was pronounced dead at 4:39 p.m. at Illinois Masonic Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner.
Police said no one is in custody for the shooting, an unusual occurrence during the day in Portage Park, which prides itself on being among the safest neighborhoods in the city.
Trudeau said she and her family were shaken up by the violence right outside their home, where they have lived for 4½ years.
'You never think this is going to happen in your front yard,' Trudeau said. 'I was trying to remain calm, but I couldn't stop thinking this cannot be real.'
The last murder in the Jefferson Park Police District, which covers most of the Far Northwest Side, occurred Nov. 11 when a pizza delivery driver was killed during an apparent robbery, officials said.
It was a 'miracle' that no children were outside playing on her block, which is home to nearly a dozen kids, Trudeau said.
'It was such a nice day,' Trudeau said. 'If it had been 24 hours earlier, my daughter would have been across the street drawing with chalk on the sidewalk.'

Everyone in their family had trouble sleeping Sunday night, even with police cars stationed on the street, Trudeau said.

'I kept telling her that we were safe,' Trudeau said of her daughter. 'I even showed her the police car out front. It was just hard to get those images out of my mind.'
Giovanni was one of five people shot to death over the weekend, police said.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported on December 20th, 2017 that former Intercept journalist and former intern for WBEZ-FM and DNAinfo Chicago, Juan Thompson, has been sentenced to five years in prison for
bomb threats he made against Jewish institutions, which the judge labeled as domestic terrorism.
This follows on the charges that were levied against Thompson back in March of 2017 for the eight bomb threats he issued prior to being arrested.
Thompson admitted to the threats, along with admitting to cyber-stalking and harassing his ex-girlfriend.
As noted in the Sun-Times article, Thompson pleaded guilty to the charges…
“Calling Thompson’s crimes domestic terrorism, Judge P. Kevin Castel sentenced the St. Louis man to a year longer than the federal sentencing guidelines recommended. He cited the eloquence of a victim statement delivered by Thompson’s ex-girlfriend, Francesca Rossi.
“Rossi said Thompson began abusing her during their relationship and intensified the terror delivered largely through social media and electronic communications after they broke up.”
We previously reported that Juan Thompson had been arrested back in March of 2017 by the FBI.
Thompson had been fired from The Intercept and other duties for fabricating stories and pushing an agenda. One his agendas was to blame #GamerGate for being a campaign of misogyny, as he wrote in his piece for the outlet back in May, 2015…
“The online racism directed toward Butler and other black writers is similar, in its scope and severity, to the online misogyny exposed by the Gamergate controversy last year. Many people were shocked to read about the torrent of misogynist hate directed at video game developer Zoe Quinn after a jilted ex-boyfriend falsely accused her, in a blog post, of having used sex to advance in the gaming community. The threats got so bad that Quinn eventually fled her home out of fear for her safety.”
Thompson is one of many anti-#GamerGate journalists who have been outed either for sexual harassment, sexual abuse, or rape. Thompson, however, is the first journalist who has been arrested, charged and convicted for domestic terrorism.
One of the members of the GameJournoPros, Devin Connors, had once mentioned that #GamerGate wouldn’t end until “someone goes to prison”, back on September 6th, 2014.
Tumblr media
At this juncture, it appears even after an anti-#GamerGate journalist was convicted of domestic terrorism and is going to prison, the brakes on the #GamerGate train won’t be put to use anytime soon.

After the leaking of a disturbing video showing the final moments of Anthony Kyser being attacked and killed by the manager of a CVS pharmacy in Chicago, a congressman is calling for a new probe into the man’s death. The video, posted Thursday by DNAinfo Chicago, was taken from surveillance footage of an alley near the CVS store in the city’s Little Village neighborhood where 35-year-old Kyser fled after allegedly stealing toothpaste and crayons on May 8, 2010. The video shows Kyser being pushed to the pavement and strangled by the store manager after a brief struggle while a second man appears to kick and punch Kyser and other men join in to hold him down. At one point, Kyser stops struggling. (Click through to DNAinfo to watch the full video, which contains graphic content.) Police investigating the incident opted not to file charges as the CVS manager, who has been identified as Pedro Villanova, claimed self defense and they ruled it an accident. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office also did not investigate the off-duty county officer who was on the scene as Kyser was being killed, but did nothing to stop the struggle. Kyser’s death was ruled a homicide by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, DNA reports.

Ramos will be bringing along Miguel Cervantes, who plays the lead role in the Chicago production, Ari Afsar, who plays Eliza, Chris Lee, who has the dual roles of Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson, and fellow castmates Samantha Marie Ware and Candace Quarrels, as well as "Chicago Fire" star Miranda Rae Mayo and Chicago Cuatro Orchestra.
According to Cathy DeRonne, spokeswoman for "Rise Up for Puerto Rico," Ramos was "devastated" when it took two weeks to regain contact with family members after Hurricane Maria struck the island a month ago. He arranged Monday's benefit concert for United for Puerto Rico.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Greenhouse Theater, 2257 N. Lincoln Ave., with tickets priced at $65. There will also be a silent auction including "Hamilton" tickets and memorabilia.

Originally Su and her fam and I had tickets to wndr museum in Aug. before they moved from Chicago in Sept., but then a day before its opening wndr sent out this email about “unexpected construction delays” and automatically re-assigned everyone’s timed reservations. (If I had to write an email like that to guests for an event I was organizing, I’d probably include the word “Sorry” somewhere in there but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) My “Yo is [this] a scam” tweet got quoted in the Block Club Chicago article about it lol. (BTW, support local journalism and subscribe to Block Club! They’re DNAinfo risen from the ashes. I missed neighborhood news. (Also, they and Time Out Chicago were the only ones who reported on the opening and Block Club’s the only one who included the email.)) Since the timed tickets were agree-or-get-a-refund (I managed to get them to push mine back an additional week since the day they reassigned me to was during Expo Chicago), Su & co. had to get refunds since they, y'know, don’t live here anymore, and here I am by myself now lmao. Which is nbd since I go to things alone all the time, but this kind of experience doesn’t really warrant the quiet contemplation. Anyway, kudos to the floor room staff here stationed at every corner; they’re enthusiastic and Ms. Frizzle-esque. And some of the art is indeed cool! That said, these pop-up photo ops come and go; make sure you also support our local art museums! They’re always here. And much cheaper (the Art Institute and MCA are half the price of wndr) and have weekly free days. Lastly, as it just so happens: On this day 7 years ago, I came up with I CAN DO THAT! Opening night photos here. It would go on to be named audience choice for “Best Art Exhibit” in NewCity’s Best of Chicago, as it deserved, ofc. Talk about community engagement / audience participation / interaction / collaboration. And it was free. 😊😘 // © Jenny Lam 2018
