hello! i apologize in advance this is probably something that you get asked a lot. but do you have any recs on literary magazines to submit to? im a trans poet, ive been writing for over a decade but never shared anything and ive been wanting to try to send my stuff to get it published somewhere. obv ive been google searching but theres so many big and small publications and i was wondering if you have ones you like especially and/or tips on how to choose a magazine/journal to submit to. thanks a lot! <3
no worries, thank you for reaching out!! i've been publishing for like 8 years + an editor for almost 4, so i always appreciate the opportunity to help people new to the world find ethical publications that will treat their work with the care it deserves.
first and foremost: there are going to be pubs out there that are awesome and i don't know about. you may be the one to discover them for yourself! one aid in finding the best mag for your work is the wonderful, writer-created chillsubs. it's a fantastic platform that keeps a huge list of mags and presses and their relevant stats, and lets you create an account and bookmark those you're interested in. everyone i know uses them, and it's very worth it given the sheer volume of mags out there.
i also have some recs of my own, ofc. i'm going to list them below. if they pay (which i prioritize) I'll mark them with a $. some are trans/queer focused and some aren't, but all are pubs i've either edited and/or published with and can confirm their ethics + respect for writers.
manywor(l)ds - my mag! i'm co-founder and eic. break genre _ shapeshift with us. ($)
Sinister Wisdom - old, well-regarded lesbian+ lit mag, now open to everyone who is/loves a dyke. I'm guest-editing an issue on Madness with them, now open for submissions!
fifth wheel press - run by a beloved friend and comrade of mine. i've published here. excellent transparency, care, great for first-timers. ($).
kith books - headed by trans literary icon kat blair. a mag/press/community centered around bodymind non-conformity and noncompliance.
Honey Literary - QTPOC-centered, unabashedly pop-culture + social justice oriented. the vibes are simply immaculate.
Whale Road Review - not queer/trans focused, more oriented toward....'grown up' poetry/prose/pedagogy papers. Katie Manning (eic) is a fucking gem.
Graphic Violence Lit - just had my first experience publishing with them, and their care + consideration for the whole writer is amazing. they publish boundary-pushing work.
beestung - one of the brainchildren of Sarah Clark. nb/gq/2s SFF. I just edited a few guest issues w them and have published with them. amazing work. ($)
A Velvet Giant - genrequeer work. the editors are experienced, enthusiastic, and amazing at promoting writers long after publication. it's a family! ($)
Ethel Zine + Press - handmade with love by Sara Lefsyk (as you can see, trans/nonbinary/2s sarahs dominate indie publishing, as well we should :3). Sara is a sensitive and care-full editor and bookmaker whose every publication is a work of art.
Protean - pro- as in proletariat. awesome left mag with a mix of politics and culture and everything in between. they take reprints! ($)
Mudroom - publish your work along with a picture of your mudroom/shoe rack. very responsive editors who will hype you tf up. ($)
The Institutionalized Review - for psych survivors. the editors concreteness of vision and dedication to their community know no bounds.
Just Femme + Dandy - queer and fashion-focused! led by the inimitable Addie Tsai. They pay *handsomely*. ($)
In addition, there are also some "big" mags I have had excellent experiences publishing with and wanted to shout out. These are harder for a beginner to break into, but worth keeping on your radar + have been fantastic to me as a writer.
Electric Lit
Split Lip Magazine
The Offing
Nat. Brut
Santa Fe Writers' Project
Bodega
New Orleans Review
Augur Magazine
I hope this is helpful to you + others! the literary world is ever-changing and this is just a snapshot. Hopefully you find some that you like!

Well, well, well...
It takes SO FREAKING LONG to get published that when it happens, even if it's just the second time, it feels a tiny bit monumental (which, I know, is an oxymoron, but just go with it). I am so beyond proud of the work I have created, both for this publication, and all the poems and stories I've written that have led me to this point. Can't wait to go even further into the wilderness of a writer's life and craft something even better!!!🌿
Read my poems (and others by some truly incredible writers I'm chuffed just to be featured with😋) at the link above, OR purchase a physical copy of Sixfold's Poetry Summer 2023 issue HERE!

LOOKIT, my name's in a description for a book you can buy on bloody Amazon!!!!! (nothing like a little recognition for my art to make me temporarily forget my seething hot hatred for that corporation)😂

Tumblr media
I'm thrilled to receive my contributor copy of Mid-American Review, with my poem "Sugar in the Gourd and the Gourd Upon the Ground," along with a host of awesome fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction. Huge thanks to Megan Borocki, Abigail Cloud, and everyone at MAR! A wild turkey was gobbling at me from the woods while I took these photos. I think it could sense my excitement. 😀

I’m afraid I have some bad news. After ten years of publishing, The Nib is going to close down this summer. The new issue of our magazine, the Future issue, will be our last. We will continue to publish online every weekday through August and then shut down.
To all those who have supported us and published with us, thank you. To the readers whom I know this disappoints, I’m sorry, but it couldn’t be avoided.
If you’re a member: You don’t have to do anything. Your membership will continue through August and then be automatically canceled. During that time we will be publishing daily as usual, including new comics from our regular lineup.
This was an incredibly hard decision to make and there’s no one factor involved. Rather it involves, well, everything. The rising costs of paper and postage, the changing landscape of social media, subscription exhaustion, inflation, and the simple difficulty of keeping a small independent publishing project alive with relatively few resources—though we did a lot with them. The math isn’t working anymore.
I’m really proud of what we have accomplished. Over the past decade, The Nib has published more than 6,000 comics and paid out more than $2 million to creators. Countless book projects have launched from Nib pieces and a number of creators had their first professional comics published with us. For ten years we were the outlet supporting political cartooning and showcasing the possibilities of nonfiction comics. Rather than enduring years of painful cuts and diminishing output, I’d rather go out while The Nib is still in a place that feels respectable, rather than run the publication into the ground.
I didn’t want to shut down overnight. That felt too abrupt and I’d like to do right by our contributors and editors. We still have an entire magazine’s worth of comics that deserve to be published online, and continuing the site through the summer allows us to get some much needed funds for paying our bills, setting up some long term measures to preserve the website, and paying all of our editors a severance.
If you’re not a current member of The Nib, you can buy the Future issue here as well as the back stock of magazines we have in our store.
I’ll also add that The Nib will likely reconvene for an anthology or special projects some day. But I don’t want to lead with that as if this is some sort of media pivot. The daily comics and the print magazine will come to an end and we will cease publishing. What has been my job for the last ten years—truly my dream job—will end and I don’t have plans beyond that.
This great team of editors and contributors I’ve assembled will then be scattered, but I know the plan for all of us will be the same: continue to make comics. I will have more to say about our decade of publishing closer to when we shut down, but for now I’d like to acknowledge the editors who helped shape the publication over the years: Eleri Harris, Mattie Lubchansky, Andy Warner, Whit Taylor, and Shay Mirk, as well as our print designer Mark Kaufman, and of course our countless contributors.
Thanks for reading and supporting us all these years.
Matt Bors, Editor and Publisher (2013-2023)

Not to mention you'll never look at kettlebells the same way again. It's not a Halloween-themed issue by design, but boy did our submissions fit the spooky season vibe.

Exciting news! EPOCH Magazine is now open for submissions!
And I'm as pleased as punch to be its first-ever guest editor in Fiction! 📚 Please spread the word that we are now open for submissions, and don't forget to send in your stories, poetry, or art!
What is EPOCH?
EPOCH is one of the most prestigious and widely anthologized literary magazines in America. Under the helm of its most recent-editor-in-chief, the late (and dearly beloved) Michael Koch, EPOCH won the first ever O. Henry Prize for best publisher of fiction and best literary magazine in America, an award given in later years to publications such as The New Yorker; it has had its work reproduced in every major literary anthology in the United States. EPOCH featured the first published fiction of many noteworthy writers, including Thomas Pynchon and Don DeLillo, as well as early stories from emerging writers like Philip Roth and Joyce Carol Oates.
EPOCH is published biannually and is currently seeking works of fiction, poetry, essays, comics, and graphic art.
How do I submit?
Full submission guidelines can be found here. EPOCH accepts both electronic submissions via Submittable (August and January only) as well as mail submissions (August through March).
EPOCH also pays its contributors! Payment is currently from $100 to $500 for poetry, prose, or comics, depending on length, and 350$ for cover art!
As the guest editor this year and assistant editor in the past, I can attest that every submission sent to EPOCH is read and considered extremely carefully. Please, send in your works of fiction, poetry, and art!!! I am personally especially excited to see works of speculative fiction, weird or magical realist fiction, and anything else that sparks the imagination, but all genres and styles are welcome! 👀
And if you've never submitted your work to a literary publication and don't know where to start, feel free to check out this blog! I originally started it to answer people's questions about the writing and/or publication process, and to give them tips on things I had insight on as an editor. These posts here, here, and here are good places to start if you need help! I'm rooting for you! ⭐️
