Some more thoughts about Henry V’s face hole
I tracked down an 1898 article, “Some Documents Relative to the Battle of Shrewsbury” (Transactions of the Shropshire Archaeological and Natural Society, 2nd series, vol. x, part ii). Very luckily, the society still exists and has pdfs of all their past volumes of their journal on their website (I’m not going to link because of tumblr gets mad about links but it’s easy to find via Google - though if you’re looking for this article, it’s listed as vol. 21, part 2). Anyway, I wanted this article because Michael Livingston mentions in on his chapter on the treatment of Henry V’s facehole in Wounds and Wound Repair in Medieval Europe) that it contains the only surviving reference, albeit an indirect one, that Henry IV made about the wound. More interesting, however, this isn’t the only mention made of the then-Prince Henry (who I’ll call Hal in this post).
Here’s the reference Livingston noted:
Tumblr media
[transcript: The King to Richard, Earl of Arundel, Thomas Berkele of Berkele, Edward de Cherleton, Hugh Burnell, and John Tuchet of Audelee, greeting. Since our very dear son the Prince is not able to proceed to preserve the marches of our kingdom of England towards Wales against the hostilities and invasions of Owin de Gleyndowrey and our other rebels there; We have assigned to you authority to preserve and govern the marches of Wales, and to resist the rebels if they presume to invade the marches, to make war against and destroy them. Given at Salop the 23rd day of July. (mem. 24)]
Livingston says that this was written twenty days after the Battle of Shrewsbury, the date given in the article is only two days after the battle, I’m not sure what the truth is (I’m guessing Livingston checked the original record? “Salop” seems to an alternate name for Shrewsbury so it would make the most sense for it to be within days of the battle). It’s only an oblique reference to Hal’s injury, saying that he’s not able to perform his duties (unsurprisingly!) but without explanation and giving the responsibility for his duties to others.
But there’s a record of an announcement made by Henry, this time referencing an order to Hal,  a couple of days later:
Tumblr media
[transcript: The King to all to whom &c. greeting. Know ye that we, fully trusting in the fidelity and foreseen circumspection of our very dear son Henry Prince of Wales, have given to the same Prince by tenor of these presents full power to correct and punish all and singular our rebels of the counties of Chester and Flynt and the lordship of Dynby, who lately raised themselves against our royal majesty and the debt of their allegiance in the company of Henry Percy son of the Earl of Northumberland, in our name according to the law and custom of our kingdom of England, to bring the same rebels and any of them to our grace if they wish to seek it by fines to our use, or to receive them in any other way according to the wise discretion of the same Prince, always reserving to us forfeiture of the lands and tenements and goods and chattels of the same our aforesaid rebels to be disposed of at our will. In witness &c. so long as it please us to continue it. Witness the King at Stafford the 25th day of July. By the King himself. (mem. 22)]
The same order on the same date is also present in Rymer’s Foedera, vol. 8, p. 320.
So. We have Henry IV, four days after the battle, giving Hal the power and responsibility to deal with rebels, to use his “wise discretion”, whether to correct and punish them or to facilitate a reconciliation between them and Henry. The only person given the responsibility is Hal, with no reference to other people who could fulfil these duties. Henry, your son has got a bodkin point lodged six inches deep in his skull. I don’t think he’s capable of “wise discretion” right now.
The next reference is a grant to Hal of seized goods:
Tumblr media
[transcript: For the Prince: The King to all to whom &c. greeting. Know ye that of our special grace we have granted to our very dear and wellbeloved son the Prince all the silver vessels which belonged to Thomas late Earl of Worcester, which he lately forfeited to us, and which by reason of the same forfeiture belong to us, in whosesoever hands they can be found. In witness &c. Witness the King at the Royal town of Salop the 23rd day of June. By writ of privy seal. (mem. 14)]
This is a more sensible move, since it doesn’t require the sixteen-year-old with the arrow in his head to do anything. The date given is 23 June but that’s probably a mistake for 23 July, as it would predate the battle where Worcester died. But before we give Henry too much credit, here’s another “um, dude, your son has got an arrowhead lodged in his skull...”
Tumblr media
[transcript: The King assigns to Henry Prince of Wales power to enquire into the cases of and treat with those who took part in the late rebellion, viz. Richard de Wenyngton chivaler, Adam Bostok, John Donn of Ulkyngton, John Kynglesley, Thomas Holford, John de Legh of Bothus, Richard Chalmesley, Robert Goldsmyth of Chester, Thomas Sparkes of Chester, Roger de Venables parson of the church of Ronsthorne, Roger Davenport parson of the church of Pulforde, William de Clotton parson of the church of Dodleston, the parson of the church of Hanley and William de Legh formerly parson of the church of Davenham, and all other ecclesiastics who came armed to the battle near Salop or assented to the said rebellion, with a view to their pardon and restoration of their forfeited goods. Given at Westminster 27 September. (mem. 7)]
(Before I get into it, that’s a lot of priests who fought or at least took part in the rebellion!)
Once again Henry is assigning to Hal the duty of dealing with the rebels though the date is two months after the battle. It’s possible that the arrowhead was out at this stage - John Bradmore doesn’t specify how long it took him to devise and enact his treatment, or when it ended. But his account indicates that significant time had passed between the failed attempts of "diverse skilled doctors” to treat the wound and his arrival on the scene (”at length I came to him”), though this might be rhetoric to make himself sound more skilled. He doesn’t also detail how long it took him to devise his treatment, design and make the surgical instrument he used or how long it it took to enlarge the wound or remove the arrowhead, or the aftercare beyond twenty days of wound-packing.  Anne Curry does note that Hal was out of action for about a year after the injury which certainly implies that recovery took a long time. But whether Bradmore had completed his cure by late September or his treatment was still in progress, I doubt Hal was in much of a state to do anything in response to this order.
So.
I think these orders were about maintaining the image that all is well, that the Prince of Wales is in good health and actively engaged in the running of the kingdom. I think there was probably verbal messages sent to ensure that these duties were attended to by someone who was discreet and fit for the job - perhaps someone like Richard, Earl of Arundel (who, per the first order, was already dealing with Glyn Dwr’s rebellion) or perhaps even Edward, Duke of York (who was appointed in October that year as lieutenant of south Wales), or someone in Hal’s household - while presenting outwardly the fiction that Hal was involved.
The relative silence around Hal’s wound, the contradiction between the seriousness of the wound as described by Bradmore and the short, unelaborated mentions of it in contemporary accounts and, in these records, the reports of duties still be carried out by Hal in the immediate aftermath of the battle, all suggest that there was significant anxiety around the wound. Henry IV no doubt feared for his son’s life and long term health. But the wound could also be “read” as judgement on Henry’s reign and on his claim to the throne. To lose no less than the heir to the throne just years into his reign, in a battle that contested the legitimacy of Henry’s kingship and had been very close and very deadly, was probably not something that could be viewed neutrally. It may have also been read as potentially disastrous in view of the Owain Glyn Dwr’s rebellion. Glyn Dwr had declared himself Prince of Wales and the English Prince of Wales had been struck down with an arrow wound, left fighting for his life, suggesting that perhaps Glyn Dwr was in the right. Therefore, it was something best hushed up, best ignored.
There is no evidence of Henry visiting Kenilworth and although he must have been kept informed, no evidence of communication about Hal’s condition has survived, perhaps suggesting that perhaps any updates on his son’s conditions were either delivered verbally or were destroyed after being read.  Although, that could just be a quirk of what survives and what doesn’t. At the same time, there seems to have been no urgent move to recall Henry’s second son, Thomas, from Ireland, with the view that if Hal died, Thomas could be immediately promoted to Prince of Wales and take over in Wales or that he would need to see his brother or attend his funeral. Thomas did return in November 1403 due to the dire condition of his regime in Ireland (letters dating back to 1402 attest to his struggles) but it’s also tempting to speculate that Hal’s injury may have played a role with Thomas returning either to see his brother before he died or in preparation to become the Prince of Wales. This was four months after the battle, however, so Hal may well have been out of danger by this stage and Thomas’s return may have been no more than coincidental.
So. I think these orders to Hal by Henry were part of maintaining the fiction that all was well. The first one came on the heels of battle, perhaps even as Hal was being moved from Shrewsbury to Kenilworth for treatment. We don’t know how long Bradmore took to tend to the wound but it’s tempting to speculate that this second order may have come at a time when it was unclear whether Hal would recover from Bradmore’s treatment or what his recovery would look like - or, perhaps, in response to gossip or rumours about the Prince of Wales’s health that have not survived.

FAKE RELATIONSHIP FIC REC, Part II: Below you will find more fics that have themes of fake/pretend relationships. (Part I)
📖 The Greatest Thing by @infinitelymint (163k)
“What’s that on your finger?” Louis asks, his voice higher than usual, slightly panicked as though he’s realised something that Harry hasn’t even begun to comprehend. Harry looks down on his right hand then, sees nothing and moves on to the left, and— Oh. A ring. Or, Harry and Louis haven’t spoken since the band broke up when a dangerous combination of Niall Horan, tequila, and an ordained Elvis impersonator means that the two of them have to embark on their biggest publicity stunt to date - together. (aka the semi-canon accidentally married in Vegas fic that has been seven years in the making)
📖 Lightning Strikes The Heart by @fournipplesau & @justalarryblog (130k)
Shrewsbury, 1814 Dearest reader, I present to you your new bulletin of news regarding Shrewsbury citizen's activities. My name is Lady Merriweather and I will be in charge of the updates. I will make sure you are to know all the important details of what is to happen this season. You must know that you do not know who I am and you never shall. But be forewarned; I certainly do know you. I advise you to be on your best behaviour, lest you want the whole town to be privy of your business. As expected every year, the Lockhart House hosts the season’s opening ball, and its invitation is the motive of the hustle in town, and every family hopes for the invitation. This year is no different, but this year everyone's attention is focused on the new Duke of Montgomery, His Grace Harry Edward Styles, and whether he will attend it. All the omegas will be in their best manner, behaviour and clothes as it is expected. And here, dear reader is where we will find out which young omega might succeed at securing a match, hoping to not become a spinster. Place your bets.
📖 Mistletoe's For Two by @ireallysawanangel (90k)
After an encounter in a coffee shop with the rudest man he's ever met, Louis hopes the city is just big enough that he'll never bump into him again. When he spots that man at a bar the following evening, a plan begins to form. They both need dates for their respective Christmas parties and decide to use each other for their own benefit. They'll help one another through the holidays and then 'break it off' on New Year's, then agree to never see each other again. Developing feelings was not part of the plan. Or, an enemies to lovers fake dating advent fic.
📖 this charade (was never going to last) by @scrunchyharry (68k)
On the surface, CitizenX, an international caritative nonprofit, looked like any other nonprofit, funding humanitarian missions worldwide and striving to make the world a better place, one donation at a time. At least, that was what Harry thought, until he was hired as a computer specialist for a spinoff agency called carish, whose true purpose was to reveal CitizenX’s tangled web of lies. As if the whole ‘industrial spy’ business was not stressful enough, Harry found himself in a hatred-at-first-sight relationship with one of his new coworkers, Louis, a man intent on detesting Harry. When the worst happened and Harry and Louis found themselves thrown together in hiding, with only each other to rely on, Harry never could have predicted the turn their relationship would take. Nor could he anticipate that it would all be taken away from him and he would have to decide how far he was willing to go to get Louis back.
📖 another dream but always you by @nobodymoves (60k)
Harry is a Dreamwalker; he has the ability to visit people in their dreams and help put them on the right path. He's assigned to Louis, who's struggling after the break-up of his band. It's an unusual assignment from the beginning; Harry has a crush on Louis, and Louis's subconscious immediately decides Harry is the love of his life. When Dreamers cast Harry as their love interest, he can usually redirect them, but Louis is insistent on being Harry's boyfriend, and despite knowing they have no future, Harry wants to keep up the charade.
📖 Glitter in the sky, glitter in our eyes by @softfonds (59k)
What happens when a Duke who will only marry for love and a courtesan who only sells it create a public ruse? Well, nothing boring for sure. An Edwardian AU.
📖 I Keep Looking For Magic by @lululawrence (36k)
Harry loves Christmas, but this year is special. After ten years of boyfriends all failing to ever meet Harry's family, Harry has a fiance to introduce and things are looking like they will be perfect. Until they break up. Harry cannot go home alone when he had promised to bring a significant other again. This leaves him with little choice but to find someone to pretend they are his fiance. Surely nothing could go wrong with this plan.
📖 Lies & Liability by @evilovesyou (34k)
Harry Styles has only three wishes when he leaves River Dane Manor to go to Town for his first season: that his sister has rented a townhouse that will provide him as many of the comforts of the country life he has grown accustomed to as possible, that he will not trip and fall when he is presented to Her Majesty the Queen, and that he will enter matrimony out of true love, no matter how favourable the match with any which alpha may be.
📖 Pray To God This Won't Be A Mess by @xogucciblue (28k)
When Louis is outed just weeks before his hotly anticipated second album is set to drop, Harry agrees to hold his hand in a few pictures to cool down the media hype. That's all it was supposed to be.
📖 Went Down In Flames by @itsnotreal (26k)
Louis was in an absolutely shit storm. He had let it go on for too long. Let it go too far. But he had a plan. And tonight, said plan was going down. He was going to tell the boys he was proposing this weekend. ‘Harry’ would turn him down, albeit gently, and Louis would play the heartbroken boyfriend. He’d gotten this far. All he had to do was lock himself in his bedroom and cry a little. He’d been in a few plays growing up. Piece of cake. Except. It didn’t go that way. Of course, it didn’t. Because the universe, the beautiful chaotic bitch that she was, just had to have an actual Harry Styles and he just had to be Niall’s best friend.
📖 And I’d Marry You Harry (Because You Forced Me) by @2tiedships2 (24k)
The Proposal AU featuring Harry as Sandra Bullock, Louis as Ryan Reynolds, and all the fun a fake relationship and forced engagement can bring.
📖 if it looks like, feels like, tastes like love...  by @tempolarriefix (16k)
the one where harry and louis hate each other but pretend to date to be able to live in university 'family housing', zayn and liam are their nosy next door neighbors, and niall is the friend who made it all happen.
📖 Wed’n Walk (Or, We Went to Amsterdam Together) by @hellolovers13 (11k)
When Harry had first started planning his honeymoon to Amsterdam, he had not envisioned ending up there with his best friend. Or getting fake-married to him for 24 hours.
📖 Not Another Lonely Christmas by @haztobegood (8k)
Harry should be more nervous that he’s bringing a literal stranger to meet his extended family, but he figures it can’t be much more awkward than Aunt Sharon’s Christmas parties usually are. Instead, he’s looking forward to having an extra person to buffer the conversation. A knock comes one minute after eleven. He lets out the breath and opens the door. “Hi there— Louis?!” Or, the one where the friend Niall sets up as Harry's fake boyfriend turns out to be Gemma's best friend Louis
📖 Christmas Pretenders by @larryatendoftheday (4k)
When Niall convinced Louis to come home with him for the holidays as his fake boyfriend, he never expected he'd run into the loveliest man he'd ever seen. Or, twist on the fake-dating for the holidays fic, where the real love interest is the fake-boyfriend's best friend.

I don’t have a theory per se yet, but I am stewing on the connection between the Tower Princes (Gideon and Ianthe) and the Prrinces in the Tower — the sons and heirs of King Edward IV, Edward V and his younger brother Prince Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York — they were locked in the Tower of London by their uncle (who was rumored and theorized to have murdered them) and who then took the throne himself as Richard III

🩷 The Murmur of Yearning by MediaWhore / @mediawhorefics (M, 93k)
Four years ago, Harry Styles was forced into a marriage of convenience to enrich and ally both his and his promised's families. The sudden, and slightly suspicious, death of the Marquess of Haxshire, however, brings great disturbance to Crescentfield Hall and, as his late's husband's closest male relative, Harry unexpectedly finds himself the head of a family he never felt he belonged to. Between a meddling distant cousin hellbent on inserting himself in Harry’s life, his wicked and mistrustful mother-in-law and his late husband’s advisors refusing to help or take him seriously, Harry struggles in the fight to keep what he’s earned and make the Estate finally feel like home.
Luckily, he doesn’t stand completely alone and finds himself an unlikely ally in Mr Tomlinson, the elusive Land Stewart who has been taking care of the property in the shadows for years. Louis Tomlinson is caring, patient, and unlike everyone else, he doesn’t seem to think Harry committed a murder.
🩷 Ace of Spades by @allwaswell16 (E, 78k)
Living as a sheltered omega in a farming village has not prepared Harry for life aboard the most notorious pirate ship to sail the Atlantic.
Or Louis is a pirate, Harry is his captive, and no one is who they say they are.
🩷 Mead Of Poetry by MyEnglishRose / @lwtisloved (E, 65k)
Under the pressure of continuing the Styles viscountcy line now that he is getting older, Harry sets himself three rules to finally settle down and marry: firstly, the omega needs to be reasonably attractive, secondly, they must be of great mind, thirdly, they cannot be anyone he would ever fall in love with.
Enters Charlotte Tomlinson, the diamond of the first water of the upcoming season and seemingly the perfect candidate to the viscount’s plan, but her omega brother, Louis, is in Harry’s way. Louis only seeks to protect his sister and he sure is not going to let a rake play with her heart.
Or. A Regency A/B/O AU loosely inspired by the second book of the Bridgerton series, "The Viscount Who Loved Me".
🩷 Lend Me Your Hand by QuickedWeen / @becomeawendybird (M, 63k)
Society has long since decided that the soulmarks everyone is born with are entirely unfashionable. They're just another way for people of a lower class to scam their way into marrying above their station.
Lord Louis Tomlinson, Viscount Loring, on the other hand, has always believed that he will find his soulmate one day. Despite preparing for a match his whole life, he is entirely unprepared for the arrival of Gemma Styles' younger brother.
Harry Styles has been traveling and away from society for over a year. Coming back, he intends to spend time with his sister, and slowly reacquaint himself with life in town. He doesn't need to wait around for a soulmark to determine how his life will play out.
🩷 For the Sake of Propriety by panda_bear21 (M, 52k)
Louis Tomlinson is the caretaker of an estate that is not truly his, and when his Uncle calls upon him to take it back, Louis knows he will soon be out on the streets with four overly zealous sisters to care for. His only solution: wed the eldest two off and pray for the best. When an even better solution unexpectedly presents itself in the form of the charming Mr. Styles, Louis is faced with a difficult choice. But as with all things in the regency era, reputation very well may threaten to outweigh the fleeting matters of his h eart.
🩷 The Earl and His Duke by QuickedWeen / @becomeawendybird (E, 52k)
Lord Tomlinson, the elusive Duke of Leeds, has suddenly emerged in London for the first time in six years. He is believed to have been abroad. He is believed to have been widowed. He is believed to want to withdraw from society.
Harry doesn’t know what is true and what isn’t. He only knows that the older brother of one of his best friends is back in town to stay, and that time has taken him from merely the most beautiful man Harry knew, to the most handsome man to ever walk the earth. A man whose gaze probably still skips over Harry like he doesn’t exist the same way it did when they were young.
🩷 If I Loved You Less by @allwaswell16 (E, 36k)
Beautiful omega Louis Tomlinson is set to make his come out in London society and determined to find a mate in his first Season. With the help and protection of his oldest friend, Lord Niall Mendes, he takes Society by storm.
Being a wealthy and titled alpha means Lord Harry Styles has grown used to avoiding unmated omegas...until now. This Season he finds himself at every Society event just for a chance to speak with the omega with the flashing blue eyes.
Louis has the aristocracy at his feet and all the suitors he could hope for, but his secrets may ruin his chance at a love match.
🩷 Our Sweetest Memorial by @softfonds (E, 35k)
Ever since Harry was forced to break off an engagement five years ago, he resolved to never marry for the remainder of his life. Now his family must move out of his beloved Kellynch Hall to recover some of their debts that their father had accumulated. The last thing Harry expected was for the new tenants to be related to his former fiancee. And for that fiancee to come back to Somersetshire a much more wealthy man that still holds resentment for their past. A Persuasion AU.
🩷 Lies & Liability by 4ureyesonly28 / @evilovesyou (M, 34k)
Harry Styles has only three wishes when he leaves River Dane Manor to go to Town for his first season: that his sister has rented a townhouse that will provide him as many of the comforts of the country life he has grown accustomed to as possible, that he will not trip and fall when he is presented to Her Majesty the Queen, and that he will enter matrimony out of true love, no matter how favourable the match with any which alpha may be.
🩷 he was sunshine, i was midnight rain by wildestdreams / @thelavendrhaze (E, 30k)
Harry let out a dry laugh. “It’s awkward, Louis. What can I say?”
“It doesn’t have to be. You and I are no longer engaged.”
“No,” Harry shook his head sadly. “You’re engaged to Jane. She’s pretty. How did you meet?”
Louis sighed softly, leaning back against his chair. “My parents introduced me. Father’s getting old. They wanted me to be married and step up for the family and our estate.”
“Oh,” Harry said. “And this was recent?”
This time, it was Louis that looked exasperated. “Does it matter? This was what you wanted, right?”
“I don’t —” Harry stopped short, wondering what he could say. He didn’t want this, but he did give it up. He had no right to argue right now. “I want you to be happy.”
or two years ago, Harry left Louis on their wedding day to follow his dreams of becoming an artist. When he returns, in hopes of reconciling, he finds he may be too late.
🩷 Manners and Misjudgements by bluegreenish / @greenblueish (E, 21k)
“Everyone you mention the Duke to raves about him, just like you are defending him now. But no one looks behind the façade he so ably maintains to deceive you all.”
Liam sighs deeply. “You sound like a crazy man right now, Louis.”
“I will prove to you who the Duke really is, just wait.”
or, the one where Harry is the Duke everyone loves, but Louis thinks he's too nice and decides he's going to figure out what the Duke is hiding. Spoiler: nothing, he's just nice and perhaps a bit clumsy.
🩷 I'm Weaker Without You by The_Halcyonic_Lachesist / @chai-hat-tea (T, 20k)
Alpha Lord Louis Tomlinson is a rake who refuses to settle down. Will he settle down for the Society's most talked about Omega? What about the enticing scent that belongs to the Beta? How will he react to said Beta pursuing the Omega too?
🩷 Something Wicked This Way Comes by @mugglemirror (E, 16k)
They say one can resist everything but temptation. The desire that leads to the passionate pursuit of climax that has built and broken empires. So what was stopping Harry from giving in to the temptation of Louis Tomlinson?
Or A regency murder mystery au where Louis is married to an earl and Harry is a detective. Hatchets are buried but not everyone is as they seem.
🩷 Trust Me Tonight by 28sunflowers / @vintageumbroshirt (E, 10k)
After Harry’s eighteenth birthday, his father calls him into a meeting to say that he is to be married to Prince Louis of France in just over a week.
Harry is excited, of course. The arrangement is better than any he could’ve hoped for, with such a young, handsome and kind husband.
There is just one issue: Harry doesn’t know what happens on his nuptials, or how to get pregnant to give Louis the heir that he needs.
🩷 Curves of your lips rewrite history by @lunarheslwt (E, 8k)
“Kneel.” The prince obliged like a puppet whose strings had been cut, dropping to his knees in one fluid motion. With his bowed back, compliant silence, and eyes that lowered respectfully; he was a perfect picture of submission and trust. He deserved to be captured by Michelangelo, right at this moment, but alas, Louis found himself to be possessive of pretty things. And Harry was, by far, his most ethereal and dear possession. Made sweeter only because he allowed himself to be. “Grace becomes you, when you submit to me,” Louis finally crooned, a ghost of a caress across a delicate cheek sparking goosebumps, “your Highness.” And if Louis were a less attentive man, he would’ve missed the quiet gasp that the title weaved with a taunt coaxed out. A smile curled across his lips. So easy to please, for someone who had everything his heart desired at his fingertips.
Or, everyone bows to Prince Harry, but in the privacy of his four walls, the one he is bowing and kneeling for is his knight, Sir Louis.
🩷 I Think I Dreamed You Into Life by patdkitten / @babyarcanacasey (T, 5k)
Louis is a writer in the modern times, focusing primarily on regency novels. In his latest novel, earl's son Harry Styles is his hero, but Louis can't seem to find just the right person for Harry to fall in love with. When Louis falls asleep in front of his laptop, things get a little odd: he wakes up inside the world of his book.

What more can we say about Mary that has not been said already? Well I have dug up a few little known facts about the lady.
Mary used to wash her face with white wine; it helped keep her alabaster complexion, which was the height of fashion at the times, in perfect order. The use of such fine tipple to keep the wrinkles at bay was a source of constant consternation to her English keepers the Earl of Shrewsbury and his overbearing wife, Bess of Hardwick, who were forced to foot the bill for most of the upkeep of their ‘guest’ while she resided in England at Elizabeth’s ‘pleasure’.
Still on the subject of her time in England, whilst she was in the custody of the Earl of Shrewsbury and his wife Bess of Hardwick, Mary fell out with Bess big time; Bess apparently became convinced that her husband had more than just a soft spot for the captive Queen of Scots. To get back at Bess for besmirching her name Mary wrote what has come to be called ‘The Scandal Letter’ to Elizabeth I, detailing all the dubious titbits of gossip Bess had told her over their sewing sessions.
According to what Mary had heard from Bess, Elizabeth thought herself so beautiful that she couldn’t be looked upon directly; her ladies-in-waiting would frequently find themselves convulsed with laughter at having to maintain this fiction; also that Elizabeth was sexually insatiable and had pursued one of her favourite courtiers, Christopher Hatton, and secured his favours in a threesome; and finally, and perhaps more mysteriously, that Elizabeth ‘wasn’t like other women’, perhaps physically or in some other way. Sir William Cecil, Elizabeth’s secretary of state (later Lord Burghley) sensibly saw to it that his mistress never received the letter. I do wonder what the "not like other women" comment meant!
And finally Mary was implicated in several lots to assassinate he cousin, Queen Elizabeth, the first was The Ridolfi Plot in 1571, it is said to have involved Philip II of Spain, Pope Pius V and the Duke of Norfolk, as well as Mary’s advisor, the Bishop of Ross, and Mary herself. It was to involve a Spanish invasion and a catholic uprising, followed by Mary being wed to the Duke of Norfolk, then would take the throne. When Ridolfi’s messenger was arrested at Dover, incriminating letters were seized and Norfolk was arrested, tried for high treason and found guilty. He was executed on Tower Hill on 2 June 1572. Ridolfi was abroad when the plot was uncovered and escaped this fate. Elizabeth was reluctant to authorise the execution of a fellow queen, but Mary was kept under ever-tighter surveillance.
Then there was the Throckmorton Plot Francis Throckmorton was arrested in November 1583 by Sir Francis Walsingham’s agents. Under torture he revealed a plot to invade England and place Mary on the throne, naming several allies in his confession. Throckmorton was executed and Bernardino de Mendoza, the Spanish ambassador, was sent back to Spain. Again, Parliament and Council believed the Queen of Scots should be executed. Again, Elizabeth refused to admit that Mary had been plotting against her. This plot contributed to the Act of Association of 1585 after which, Mary would be held responsible for any plot carried out in her name – whether she knew of it or not.
In 1585 we saw The Parry plot.William Parry had been working as a double agent for both the English Queen and Mary, Queen of Scots. Queen Elizabeth was informed that he had planned to kill her either in a private meeting or ambushing her. There were calls for Mary, Queen of Scots, to also be brought to justice –although there was no proof of her involvement in the Parry Plot.
Parry was arrested for treason and hanged at Westminster.
And finally The Babington plot in 1586. Babbington, an English Catholic nobleman plotted to restore the Roman Catholic religion by placing Mary on the English throne. Anthony Babington had made Mary aware of his plans to kill Elizabeth and help Mary escape.
Mary replied to Babington in letters, she explained how she wanted France and Spain to help her become Queen by invading England.
However, these letters were intercepted by Elizabeth’s spy, Sir Francis Walsingham. The letters were amended, to what extent we will never know, but it is known a gallows sign was added to a letter and a post-script asking for the names of the conspirators.
In her defence, she claimed that she could not be accused of treason as she was not an English subject.
Mary was taken to Fotheringay Castle and put on trial in October. Throughout the proceedings she protested her innocence and denied all knowledge of the plot, but the letters were produced as evidence of her guilt. After months of delays Elizabeth signed Mary’s death warrant on 1 February 1587. Seven days later Mary was beheaded in the Great Hall at Fotheringay.
Bonfires were lit and bells were rung throughout the country in celebration.

Like Bjorn Ironside pretending to be dead and getting his coffin only to suppress attack, what’s the coolest battle/fight tactics in history?
I'm going to preface this with the fact that 1) There are too many to list here (or anywhere really) and 2) I'm limited to what I personally know.
That said, here are a few that spring to mind:
Richard III's last charge at the Battle of Bosworth Field. Not only did he get within a sword's length of killing Henry Tudor himself but Richard also killed Henry's standard-bearer, Sir William Brandon, AND unhorsed burly John Cheyne, his older brother's former standard-bearer. Not bad for a guy who would today qualify for the Special Olympics. (The Japanese equivalent would be Sanada Yukimura.)
Harold Godwinson marching his army 185 miles (or 298 km) in just four days to take the Norwegians by surprise at the Battle of Stamford Bridge. (Honorable mention goes to the soldier who got in a barrel and floated under the bridge to spear the Viking holding off the entire English army. Chevalier de Bayard, a real life knight in shining armor, later replicated this feat by holding off 200 Spanish knights single-handedly at the Battle of Garigliano.)
When the rebels started chanting "Henry Percy King" at the Battle of Shrewsbury, Henry IV shouted back "Henry Percy is dead." Needless to say, Henry Percy did not respond. (His eldest son, the future Henry V (or as Shakespeare names him in his youth, Prince Hal), took an arrow to the face in this same battle, which is why Henry V's portraits always depict him from his uninjured side.)
Hannibal crossing the Alps and whooping Rome's ass multiple times on its own turf. (There's a reason "Hannibal ad portas" became a saying. Also, Napoleon I later replicated this feat.)
At the Battle of Bremule, a Norman knight seized the reins of Louis the Fat's horse, shouting "the king is taken!" Louis' response? Hitting the guy with his mace and shouting "the king is not taken, neither at war, nor at chess!"
Alexander the Great turning the island city of Tyre into a peninsula.
Alexander Buchanan killing Thomas, Duke of Clarence at the Battle of Bauge and holding the dead duke's coronet aloft on his lance.
Thanks for the question, anon

Sorry if it's a dumb question. But if people say Lambert or Perkin were the Princes, why did they wait so long to come back?
Richard stole their birthright slurred them their mother and sisters as a whore and bastards. So why the hell did they never appear in his reign and get an army? Yeah it's a short time and they were young but no one's asking them to fight. Plenty of men would've helped.
Like if everyone thought they were dead, Henry's sorta avenging them by killing Richard and marrying Elizabeth. He's the good guy! So why wait.
The best explanation I have is Richard was holding them, and would've kept them in prison until they died, but when Bosworth happened someone let them out.
I mean, if they lived, wouldn't taking two boys hostage, killing protective male family, and never letting them see their mother again, and never have any life at all, be pretty shitty behavior as it is?
So it's kind of a paradox. If Richard didn't kill them, even if they weren't Perkin or Lambert, he was expecting to leave them in jail forever. So he ruined their lives and was cruel for no reason. If he was ready to hurt two children, he sounds like the type of guy who would finish the job and kill them.
So if I follow the whole "they survived" theory through, Richard ends up sounding guilty anyway.
Well, do you know why Lambert Simmel's revolt never happened during Richard III's reign?
Because the rebellion was made by Ricardians. It's Richard III's sister funding mercenaries led by Richard III's former Lieutenant of Ireland/nephew and his former best friend, landing on Richard III's stronghold and attracting Richard III's former supporters (the Harringtons, Broughtons, Scropes).
Lambert Simmel being Edward V. Makes. No. Damn. Sense.
As for Perkin Warbeck, the fact that he waited years speaks volumes on his authenticity. He was aware that this was an issue, hence his justifications about his brother Edward V being killed by people whom he does not name the sponsor before being put in custody by said killers who seemingly have no trouble killing a 13-year-old but think it's too immoral to kill a 10-year-old. Then they free him after a bunch of years in Flanders.
Two options: either they work for Richard III, in which case they should have no trouble freeing him after he gets killed. Either they work for the Tudors/Tudor-linked, in which case he wouldn't ever be free. What convince me that Perkin Warbeck isn't Richard of Shrewsbury is his own weird version of events, not whatever his opponents said.
And indeed, it's to vindicate Richard III but less as an innocent man than a victim of his time. In the long run, they can't canonize him, considering many of his past deeds. But what they wanna do is pin the portrayal of someone unfairly treated by his contemporaries and posterity. Using a famous mystery in which one can muddy the waters enough to instigate doubts is great for them because then, they can avoid talking about his career as a duke, his actions as a general or his very real ambitions and aspirations. I do not get their hyperfixation on Richard III & morality. I personally outgrew it when I was 16 years old. Richard III doesn't interest me for that. Their picture of a martyred (?), progressive (??), proto-socialist (???) Duke of Gloucester is so strange it's a bit fascinating.

Hi Gina! I need your help to find a fic - it's based on Bridgerton and I swear I bookmarked it, but now I can't find it. I don't know if it was canceled or if the tags were somehow different - or maybe I just made it up? The only thing I remember is that it was an abo fic - and that it was quite long. Thank you in advanced! 🧡
Hi, sugar. This is the only one I know, so hopefully it’s the one you’re looking for:

📖 Come My Love Again by @softfonds (110k)
Harry Styles is handsome, clever, and rich. At least that’s what his friends say of him. He also thinks of himself as a matchmaker in Highbury, pairing people together when he finds the time. But when the arrival of a certain gentleman flips Harry’s world on its head, he starts to question everything that was once all too familiar to him, including his relationship with his good friend, Mr. Tomlinson. An Emma AU.
📖 A Taste of Desire by @casuallyhl (104k)
“As forward as I have been with you this evening, I am also aware this dinner party isn’t the place to conduct business.” Mr. Tomlinson chuckles quietly to himself, shooting a subtle glance across the table towards their hostess. “And besides, I am sure our hostess would be horribly disappointed to learn that we went away this evening with a business agreement and not a mating one.”
Harry, who had been sipping his wine, coughs harshly at this. He splutters, unaccustomed to such blatant statements about mating.
Mr. Tomlinson continues to laugh quietly, clearly pleased at Harry’s reaction.
“Mrs. Humphreys promised that there was an alpha attending the dinner tonight that I would certainly get on well with,” Mr. Tomlinson continues, voice teasing. “She assured me that we would have much in common since we both work with mills.” Mr. Tomlinson glances at Harry, eyes flashing with mirth. “Little did she know that would be where our mutual interests began and ended.”
Or, a Victorian ABO where Harry is the owner of the most successful cotton mill in Manchester, and Louis is an opinionated social activist about to disrupt Harry’s world.
📖 All I Wish Not To Remember by @avocadolouie (71k)
What happens when all you had, all you loved, all you held dear is viciously ripped away from you? When your inner core, once filled with love and hope and light, blackens to raw, dark hatred?
What happens when your soul is hopelessly consumed and no matter how hard you try, no matter how hard you attempt to shake yourself out, to rid your tormented mind of the opaque feelings that plague you, all you can see, all you can feel, all you can want is...
Revenge.
A modern adaption of The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas.
A tragic tale of timeless undying love, merciless revenge, and selfless sacrifice.
📖 From What I've Tasted of Desire by @evilovesyou (71k)
When Louis moves to the small Scottish town of Fortrose to spend some time with his father, he thinks he's come to terms with the fact that the next two years of his life will be rainy and dull. That changes when he meets the ever-elusive Harry Styles in his Biology class and he makes it his goal to find out the big secret surrounding him and his family. Louis unexpectedly finds himself in the eye of a storm of secrecy, age-old myths, friendship and romance.
📖 All Things Hidden by @coucoujedors (68k)
the Good Omens AU where Louis is a fallen angel who falls for an angel and has to save the world in the meantime.
📖 like cabbages and kings by @nobodymoves (60k)
When Louis was a kid, he had a series of very vivid dreams about a place called Wonderland. There were rabbits wearing waistcoats and talking cats and ridiculous tea parties, and amidst all the absurdity, there was a boy. A boy with dimples, big green eyes and the sweetest soul Louis has ever known. Louis has always kept a place in his heart for that boy and for his funny dreamworld, and when he’s twenty-five and his life falls apart, it turns out Wonderland might not be so imaginary after all.
📖 Just Hear This and Then I'll Go by @allwaswell16 (44k)
Former boy band member Louis Tomlinson can’t stand pompous indie artist Harry Styles, but with a new record label to launch he is going to have to endure his pretensions to snag up and coming new artist Liam Payne, who happens to be Harry’s oldest friend. Luckily, Liam seems to be very interested in 78 Records and maybe a little more than interested in Louis’ best friend. Too bad Harry won’t be making this easy on any of them.
Or a modern day Pride and Prejudice--Louis is Elizabeth, Harry is Mr. Darcy, Zayn is Jane, and Liam is Mr. Bingley. Oh, and Niall is Mrs. Bennett. Obviously.
📖 Against His Better Judgement by @lululawrence (34k)
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.
Or a husband. Whatever.
The modern Pride and Prejudice AU starring Louis as Elizabeth Bennett, Harry as Mr Darcy, Zayn as Jane/Charlotte, Liam as Mr Bingley, Gemma as Georgiana, and Niall as.....well...Niall.
📖 Along The Heather by @noellehenryfics (34k)
Jane Eyre AU/Victorian AU
Orphaned Harry Styles grows up with his cruel aunt and cousins, before he is sent away to a boys' boarding school, which teaches poor and orphaned boys. Even though his aunt tries to undermine Harry's experience at the school, he does well in school, and stays on at the school as a teacher after he graduates.
When he becomes restless after significant changes at the school, he applies for a job as a tutor at Thorgill Hall, teaching the younger brother of Mr. Louis Tomlinson. Harry develops romantic feelings for his pupil's brother...
Thorgill Hall, however, holds a secret; it’s becoming slightly more eerie every day and when his life is threatened, Harry makes a drastic decision…
📖 How Far We've Come by @hrrytomlinson (32k)
“This is Harry Styles,” Chiron offers.
He’s beautiful. His eyes are a stunning green, the color of new foliage. The new kid’s limbs are long and lanky—he looks extremely uncomfortable and uncoordinated. Louis internally smirks to himself, guessing the kid probably won’t be too skilled with a sword, or a bow, or anything sharp, most likely. His hair falls to his shoulders in sets of loose, brown curls. The color is rich and luscious, resembling soil so much that it looks like flowers could sprout from his hairline at any moment. But Louis’ eyes are stuck on his soft looking lips, pink as flower petals and slightly parted as his eyes scan the horizon of the camp.
“Welcome to Camp Half-Blood, Harry.”

The Mortimer inheritance running in a Tudor prince: here’s how historian Sean Cunningham brings to public debate an often overlooked aspect of Prince Arthur’s Yorkist connection to his Mortimer’s ancestors and how he, an unofficial Earl of March, was expected to incorporate this to his kingship.
“Arthur's transition into the leader of Marcher society did involve a clever reinterpretation of regional history that put the new prince at the center of an old story.
The area that became the most important to Prince Arthur was the region in the Welsh Marches linking Worcester, Bewdley, Ludlow, Weobley and Leominster. Along with Shrewsbury to the north, Wigmore to the west and Hereford to the south, this was the centre of power for the Prince of Wales, and the area that his Council in the Marches dominated as representative of the more distant Westminster government.
In setting up Arthur's seat of power here, Henry VII was consciously merging several strands of political influence.
Those people that surrounded and served Arthur in the late 1490 knew that this region had been the heart of the lordship of the earldom of March. The last living earl had been the young Edward V before his father died and he disappeared.
Once Edward was believed to be dead, Arthur's mother, Queen Elizabeth, became the last heir of the Yorkist kings and therefore the most prominent living descendant of the Mortimers as earls of March.
Arthur was being linked to that earldom and the Mortimer family as a direct expression of his mother's lineage and what it represented. The earldom had for many years been a critical part of the House of York's power.
Mortimer blood was also a factor in building a Yorkist claim to the throne. Elizabeth's grandfather Richard, 3rd Duke of York had been a product of the marriage of Anne Mortimer and Richard, Earl of Cambridge, one of Edward III's grandsons. Anne was the sister of the last Mortimer Earl of March - Edmund Mortimer, who had died in 1425.
Richard, Duke of York had inherited the Mortimer estates and the dormant Mortimer claim to the crown through dual descent from Edward III. It was Edward IV that brought this fusion of rights and entitlements together when he became king in March 1461.
For Prince Arthur to be seriously considered the fulfillment of the prophecy of King Arthur's deed to lead Britons in a new and glorious age, the kings subject were expected to know the significance of the story. They were probably helped out in their recollections by the representation of parts of King Arthur's story in the pageantry that accomparied many ceremonial events in which the royal family was involved.
When Prince Arthur visited Coventry in 1497 he was greeted by a pageant that featured King Arthur and the other eight of the Nine Worthies, in which the legendary King of Britain made a speech of welcome. This entertainment carried an important and repeated message about the legitimacy of the place of Henry VIl's family in the long line of England's rulers.
It is possible, however, that there was a more specific justification for Henry VI's use of the legends of early Britain, namely Prince Arthur's inheritance of Mortimer power and his presence in the borderlands of England and Wales.
The Mortimer family had shown considerable interest in the Arthurian stories as part of their genealogy. The legendary figures Cadwaladr, Brutus and Arthur were viewed as ancestors and not mythological predecessors. When the Mortimers married into the family line of Llewelyn ap Iorwerth in 1228 they absorbed the descent of the princes of Wales growing from Cadwaladr.
A genealogical roll of the Mortimer family provides some valuable evidence of how Arthurian tradition was heavily promoted by family members as they developed their relationship with King Edward I in the 1270 and during the English war with Prince Llewelyn ap Gruffydd before 1282.
Later Plantagenet kings allowed the Mortimers to build up vice-regal power along the border from their castles and estates at Wigmore, Ludlow, Cleobury and Chirk. Even after the treason and execution of Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March in 1330, the family were able to recover their influence in the Marcher lands.
(…) Even after Edward I’s conquest of Wales and Henry IV's defeat of Owar Glyadir a century later, the annexation of Wales by England was never seriously contemplated. The English Crown's authority was exercised by deputies from within the regional communities that knew the people, landscape and history of the March. They were the king's intermediaries and were agents whose relationship with the Westminster government and court was essential to the achievement of aspirations of national security and stable rule.
Henry VII's interest in ancient British stories was a prop to the extension of his royal authority generally, and that of the Marcher lords in particular. It fitted with his grand scheme to revive an older form of lordship for his son in order to create a foundation of loyalty for Arthur's future kingship. King Henry's prominent use of the red dragon standard associated with Cadwaladr - still one of the most identifiable of Tudor images -(…).
In November 1493, Arthur was formally granted the lands and rights of the earldom of March during the king's pleasure. He was not expressly given the title, which had already been in Crown hands for thirty-two years, but this was an absorption of Marcher power into the new regional force that Arthur was to embody.
Once he held the power and estates of the earldom of March, Arthur acquired the real and the mythical associations of the earldom into his personal lordship. His arrival as a new border figurehead offered Arthur the potential to build a very strong and stable structure of lordship in the communities of the Marcher region.
Since it distilled his personal power into a more potent form, immediate acceptance of Arthur's inheritance of the March was as important as a boost to Arthur's royal presence as was his national status as Prince of Wales after 1489 or earlier title of Duke of Cornwall.
As he grew into his role, Arthur would develop this network and nurture the service of families connected with the earldom of March and the Yorkist Prince of Wales without the need to labour his relationship to the legendary power of King Arthur.
At the end of 1485, the threat posed by opponents biding their time in Richard IIl's northern power base was the most immediately pressing problem for Henry VII. Unfortunately, he could not simultaneously relax his efforts to promote his kingship and make the presence of the regime felt elsewhere.
In the areas where encouragement was offered by the loyalties of those who had already declared their allegiance to the new regime, the king moved swiftly to establish his allies. Henry VII could not afford to be seen to be undermining, manipulating or threatening the old Yorkist and Mortimer networks.”
