3. Ah so this is a *tricky* one. Technically Doe doesn’t really sleep, he just ceases to be for a period of time until existing again. Which is to say the suit falls onto the bed and deflates until an arbitrary amount of time later when he “wakes” back up. Sometimes he wakes up with memories that can be called dreams, and he will call them so, as there is no one to know the truth nor to argue with him. How could they? Beyond that however, he’ll often read at night, whatever he can get his hands on, he’s not picky (although he does like nonfiction the best).

17. To everyone’s horror, he absolutely 100% does not get embarrassed easily, often missing social cues. This leads him to saying the wrong thing at the right time, the right thing at the wrong time, and everything in between. He’ll say it all loudly to boot. It’s an issue that has made him consider purchasing a summer home in the Tomb Colonies as he’s there so often, and it really would make things so much easier.

32. Not really? Doe is...very bad at social cues and situations so he will just talk to you about whatever case he’s on, or something that has caught his interest recently, very rarely even the same thing one week to the next. He’s a bit of a scatterbrain besides so he’ll hop topic between sentences sometimes. Or even words. If you want him to stay on topic with you, the best bet is to invite an outside party to nudge him back on topic every now and again. Darcy is often a good choice for this (part of why they’re married) however, sometimes the doctor is less than helpful if he thinks allowing Jonathin to continue is funnier than the current conversation, egging him on to wilder and wilder topics until everyone is lost. Best to bring a friend, really.

36. Doe has a bad case of “I projected too hard and accidentally made him *really* into monsters”. Which uh...whoops. So he actively seeks out romantic adjacent dalliances with almost everything only vaguely human in shape that can hold a conversation over a game of chess and dinner. Or a rousing shouting match. He also can and will drop whatever his plans are if he notices what could be an “interesting” romance between others and if he can he’ll try to help the process in whatever way he can. It’s a bit bothersome.

42. Doe is obsessed with two things: Mysteries and killing the murderer of his former cat, Beatrice. The latter goal is currently the cause of knifegate (which he is *going* to see through to the end d_n it all) and the former is the reason I had to make a sideblog for seeking where it’s just an au of Doe, because unfortunately that’s the characters logical end point. Who knows, years down the line he might still get there on my main account. Hopefully not but you know how it is.

B. I decided, for my current foray into London, I wanted to make a character based upon whatever portrait I found most fun (the diving suit) as the last few times I tried the game (2015 and 2017 I believe) I didn’t quite understand how to play fl and kept getting stuck around the same place (didnt realize you needed to do all of the making your name storylines and didn’t understand why I couldn’t do anything and why my stats were so low) I thought making a character to actually RP the game as would help. I also just added a bunch of stuff that makes me giggle into the pot and now Doe exists. Fun fact though: early early on while playing I actually imagined him as a rubbery man inside of the suit until I realized having him be empty was funnier.

Statesman - Chapter 6: A grand day out.

Been ages since I updated any of this, and I’ve agonised over the text too damn long, but here we are. More of Alt!verse Cesar, getting caught up in political turmoil and violence on the isolated Outpost of the Crag.

Summary: The Warden has organised a walkaround to show off the Crag’s newest resident, but things do not go to anyone’s plan. The EXO is thoroughly demonstrated.  D_N befriends a gull. After the sealed sanctuary of the tower, the watery light that poured through the first cracks in the main door was half-blinding.  Cesar tilted his head forward to bring his visor into position, and the EXO’s skull sections adjusted smoothly with his movement.  He felt a flicker of pride at the unhindered motion of the metal – he hadn’t done old-school maintenance like this for years, and getting an EXO of this age to move like a younger rig was gratifying.

She still wasn’t his suit, but… well.  It was a fraction closer to something familiar.

A new more grinding noises rattled back into the tower’s interior as the interlocked metal slabs of blast plating finally disengaged, casting small eddies of dust out into the world beyond.  Goggle-helmeted guards trotted through the opened door and fanned out into escort positions, rifles swinging lazily at their sides.  After a moment there was a faint clang of the Warden tapping on Cesar’s arm.

“Shall we, Private Castell?  Best foot forward, and all that.”

There was a waxen eagerness in the man’s expression as he gestured out at the maze of tall wire fences that surrounded the tower.  Beyond that, the jagged angles of the Outpost were harsh against its grey sky.  The Warden turned back to Cesar, bending until he could see up under the EXO’s faceplate, and smiled broadly.

“Let’s show the masses just what you are.”

Smile.  Stand up straight.  Don’t complain.

He could do this.

With the dull sunlight glinting from his fresh paintwork, standing half again as tall as the loftiest of his escorts in the EXO’s shielding bulk, Cesar Castell stepped out onto the Crag.

Milne (chapters 1-3)

Initially I wanted to take handwritten notes but so far nothing really surprising occurred, so I’ll just keep this short record here.

Chapter 1 : Basics Nothing really new here. I want to point out two arguments that I found nice. Show that a finite semigroup with cancellation law is a group by using a “counting” argument (injective maps between finite sets of same cardinality are bijective). The proof that I knew was a little bit more convoluted. Also, show that if A is some n by n matrix with entries in a ring R such that det(A) is a unit, then A is invertible with coefficients in R. The suggestion here is to use the Cayley-Hamilton theorem. This is really nice.

Chapter 2 : Presentations Again, I didn’t discover anything new. It’s nice to see a more hands-on approach to the construction of free groups. I’ve thought of an addition that makes a lot of sense when doing elementary work with free groups. I claim that every reduced word w in a free group F(X) has a representation as c w_* c^-1 where c and w_* are reduced, and where the first and last letter of w_* aren’t inverses of each other. This is a trivial statement, but useful when looking at powers w^n and estimating the length of such a word. Also an interesting exercise is the following : let G = < s,t ¦ t^-1 s^3 t = s^5 > be a presentation of a group G. Show that for any homomorphism of G to a finite group, g = s^-1t^-1s^-1tst^-1st is in the kernel of that homomorphism. I haven’t figured it out yet.

Chapter 3 : Extensions A few interesting things here. I knew of the correspondence theorem, I’ll try to keep that in mind from now on. On automorphisms of groups, I want to think about this curious fact about Aut(S_n). The claim is that S_n is complete for any n which is not 2 or 6. Maybe a computation of Aut(C_n) and Aut(D_n) is easier to start with. Another claim is that non-abelian simple groups are complete. This sounds harder to prove though. I also now see how HNN extensions generalize semi-direct products. Any group automorphism can be replaced by conjugation in a bigger group, which simply is a semi-direct product with Z. On extensions in general, I would like to see a proof of the Schur-Zassenhaus lemma. Also, I will take some time to think about how one defines morphisms of extensions, and maybe how to turn this into a category ? How is this relevant to the question of classifying extensions ? Finally, I’d like to see a proof of the simplicity of the finite PSL groups.

Anyway, these lecture notes are great and I wish I had found them earlier, back when I was younger and eager to read but easily discouraged. They are wonderfully written and very humble, if that makes sense.
