Jolts awake at 1am when bane was plotting to overthrow Batman at the end of secret six he only gave targets that were publicly associated with Batman which means that even while Bane was planning to “break the bat” again by killing “everyone he was close to” he didn’t include Alfred which means that despite himself and his fucky midlife crisis he protected Bruce’s identity until the bitter end

Fate and Phantasms #141: Jeanne d’Arc Alter Santa Lily
Tumblr media
That’s right, an unseasonably warm Christmas is upon us yet again, because it’s time for another Santa build! Today on Fate and Phantasms we’re making Jeanne d’Arc Alter Santa Lily yes that is her entire name. J Lils is a Divine Soul Sorcerer for some Christmas magic, but she’s also an Eloquence Bard, so she can deliver presents to good kids and stern lectures to bad ones. Plus, it makes all your spells Christmas carols!
Check out her build breakdown below the cut, or her character sheet over here!
Next up: Look up in the sky! It’s a bird! A plane! Its... Venus?
Race and Background
Normally we cheat a bit and call servants humans, but you’re on the losing end of Six Degrees of Separation with Mortality, so your Lineage is as Custom as it gets. (Seriously, you are the kid version of the evil version of the good version of Jeanne d’Arc.) This gives you +2 Charisma, a Small size, Performance proficiency for your next stage show, and the Lucky feat. This lets you re-roll your saves, checks, or attacks three times per long rest. You can also force attacks targeting you to be re-rolled using the same luck pool.
Like your big sister you’re getting the custom Magic Doppelganger background, giving you proficiency in Arcana and Religion.
Ability Scores
Like your even bigger sister, we’re going with the standard array here. Feel free to roll if you really want to, but make sure your Charisma is your highest stat. You’re a cute kid, and you can also dish out a mean tongue lashing when you need to lay down the law. Second is Constitution, because that’s not just how beefy you are but how lucky you are too, and you’re lucky to be alive. Your Strength isn’t bad, you’re good with a spear but you’re still a kid. You are a bit clumsy when you get worked up, so your Dexterity isn’t great. Your Intelligence isn’t amazing, at least one version of you is illiterate and I don’t know how much that affects you, but we’re dumping Wisdom. Honestly a wiser servant probably would have logic-bombed themselves out of existence by now, so this might be a blessing in disguise.
Class Levels
1. Bard 1: Going into bard first gives you proficiency with Dexterity and Charisma saves, as well as three skills from the bard list. That is to say, the entire list of skills. Intimidation is probably the closest thing to lecturing people, but that might also be Persuasion, it depends on how you word it. You also get Deception proficiency, because you absolutely did not steal any cookies from the cookie jar.
You also learn Spells that you can cast using your Charisma Modifier, as well as some Bardic Inspiration. These are a number of d6 equal to your charisma modifier that you can give to allies to help with their checks, saves, and attack rolls. They recharge on long rests.
For cantrips, Friends and Vicious Mockery run you through D&D’s gamut of social interactions. Healing Word and Heroism make for nice gifts under the tree; Sleep and Comprehend Languages give you skills any santa will need to keep on top of their duties, and Identify will make sure you get the right gift to the right person!
2. Sorcerer 1: I was going to save the multiclassing for a bit, but you really don’t wear heavy armor and your dexterity isn’t great, so here we are.
As a Divine Soul sorcerer, your Spells are augmented with Divine Magic, letting you choose sorcerer or cleric spells when you level up, and you can cast them with your Charisma. You’re also Favored by the Gods, letting you add 2d4 to a failed save or attack roll once per short rest.
For your cantrips, Control Flames will make going down the chimney a bit less hazardous. Fire Bolt gives you a quick and dirty noel ball, otherwise use Light on an ornament and just throw that. You can also Spare the Dying for a last minute gift.
For spells, Mage Armor is almost mandatory for you, and Bless and Cure Wounds are both great gifts, just in time for the holidays. The former adds 1d4 to all attacks and saves three targets make for the duration, and the latter is healing! Everyone loves healing, it’s almost like money.
3. Bard 2: Second level bards are a Jack of All Trades, adding half of your proficiency bonus to all checks that aren’t already proficient. Santa-ing requires all sorts of skills. You also learn a Carol of Rest, adding 1d6 to the healing your party does over short rests. Your Magical Inspiration also lets your allies use your bardic inspiration to increase their spells’ healing and damage rolls.
You can also cast Unseen Servant to deliver presents with the utmost secrecy!
4. Bard 3: Third level bards graduate from a college, and the college of Eloquence lets you lecture on par with the sternest of professors while also properly enunciating your Christmas carols. Your Silver Tongue lets you treat rolls of 9 or lower as 10 when you make a deception or persuasion check- naughty or nice, it’s up to you.
You can also use your Unsettling Words to point out all the naughty things a creature has done lately, spending a bonus action and an inspiration die to reduce the next save it makes based on the inspiration roll.
You also get Expertise in two skills- Persuasion to rally your party members, and Deception to pointedly ignore how you refuse to let other people help you and bottle up all your problems due to a crippling lack of self-worth.
By that I mean you also learn Knock. That’s exactly what I meant.
5. Bard 4: Use your first Ability Score Improvement to round up your Strength and Charisma scores for stronger spells, more inspiration, and a better time actually using your spear as a class named after a weapon.
You also get the cantrip Dancing Lights for more decorations, and Silence so that Knock from last level doesn’t wake up the house.
6. Sorcerer 2: Going back into sorcerer makes you a Font of Magic, giving you sorcery points equal to your sorcerer level. Right now you can turn those into more spell slots and vice versa, but better uses are coming.
You also learn the other half of Bless, Bane. Up to three creatures need to make a charisma save (DC 8 + proficiency + charisma modifier) or they subtract a d4 from their attacks and saves for the duration of the spell. By the way, yes, that does mean you can subtract 10 from an enemy’s save before blasting them. Life’s fun like that.
7. Sorcerer 3: At third level, sorcerers learn Metamagic, ways of altering their spells to suit their individual style by spending sorcery points.
Careful spells will let you protect your friends from the splashback of your choices in life. That’s not much of an issue right now, but we get scarier spells later. Otherwise, Twinned spells let you basically cast two spells at once, as long as the original could only target one thing. Now you can have red and green lights at the same time!
Speaking of spells that use neither of these options, Prayer of Healing will heal your entire party for a little bit! It has a casting time of 10 minutes though, so I’d save it for out of combat.
8. Bard 5: Heading back to bard for a bit improves your bardic inspiration, growing them to d8s. You also become a Font of Inspiration, meaning you regain inspiration dice on short rests instead of long ones.
You also learn Mass Healing Word. It’s Healing Word, but Mass.
9. Bard 6: At sixth level bards can waste their action on Countercharm, giving nearby allies advantage against being charmed or frightened. More usefully, you also get Unfailing Inspiration so your inspiration dice don’t go away until they’re used on a successful roll.
You also learn Universal Speech, spending an action to make yourself understandable to any number of creatures within 60′ of you for an hour, regardless of the languages they speak. Now you can bring the joy of Christmas all over the world! You can use this once per long rest or by spending a spell slot.
If you’re still dealing with naughty children though, you can use Fear to put them in their place.
10. Bard 7: Seventh level bards get fourth level spells. There aren’t any here we really need for the build, but Hallucinatory Terrain will help you make sure it’s always a white Christmas.
11. Sorcerer 4: Use this ASI to bump up your Strength. Now your stabbing’s good. Yay!
You also learn Thaumaturgy for more of a stage presence and Magic Missile as a stand in for that green and red thing you do. You know the one.
12. Sorcerer 5: Fifth level sorcerers can use Magical Guidance to re-roll a failed skill check by using a sorcery point. They can also cast third level spells, like Gaseous Form, which makes your whole body a bit dreamlike to pass through solid objects.
13. Sorcerer 6: Sixth level divine souls get Empowered Healing, letting you re-roll any healing dice near you at the low cost of one sorcery point. You can only do this once per turn though.
In keeping with the tradition of “getting cool sorcery abilities and spells that 100% don’t use them”, you can now cast Sleet Storm to really let it snow.
14. Bard 8: Use this ASI to max out your Charisma. You also learn Greater Invisibility, so you can personally deliver presents to kids whether they’re sleeping or awake.
15. Bard 9: At ninth level, bards see their song of rest grow to a d8 as well. They also learn 5th level spells, like Mass Cure Wounds. It’s Cure Wounds, but Mass.
16. Bard 10: At this level your bardic inspiration grows again to d10s.
I know we’ve been calling your healing spells “gifts”, but we also said they were like money- appreciated, but not really in the spirit of things. Thanks to Magical Secrets you learn two spells from any spell list. Grab the Mending cantrip for your normal cantrip this level, then grab Creation to make any sort of toy you could imagine out of thin air. Then use Conjure Volley for some mass production!
You also get Expertise in two more skills- Arcana and History are good picks here.
17. Bard 11: Eleventh level bards get sixth level spells, like Heroes’ Feast, for a great Christmas dinner.
18. Bard 12: Now that your magic’s stupid good, we should probably beef up your defenses. Normally we’d go with dexterity, but honestly your AC isn’t amazing anyway so we’ll go with Constitution. More health to burn through, and better concentration!
19. Bard 13: Your song of rest joins your inspiration in d10ville, and you get seventh level spells! Etherealness is next to ephemeralness, as the saying goes, so grab that spell and hop on the Ethereal Plane for the ultimate in home burglary skills. Now you can pass straight through objects and are completely undetectable to anything except ghosts. And blink spiders. Watch out for the blink spiders.
20. Bard 14: Our last eloquent goody is Infectious Inspiration, letting you spend a reaction to shuffle your inspiration to another person after it helps out the first person. You know how Christmas music is suddenly everywhere as soon as one radio station starts playing it? This is why. You can use this a number of times per long rest equal to your charisma modifier.
You also get one last round of Magical Secrets, and since we’ve covered most of our bases as far as presents and santa-ing goes, let’s spend these last two on Heal and Regeneration. Healing never goes out of style.
Pros:
Thanks to your maxed out charisma and unsettling words, your spells come with very difficult saves. Getting a 19 or higher on a d20-d10 is rough.
You also come packing a little bit of everything. You’re not terrible with a spear if you really need it, but you’ve also got some utility spells, healing, damage, social spells... you’ve got plenty of spread.
Speaking of being social, your guaranteed 10s on persuasion and deception, plus your expertise with both, means it’ll never be hard for you to sway crowds to your side of an argument.
Cons:
Despite having super tough saves you don’t really use them that much since you’re mostly a healer, or dealing with threats through indirect means.
We didn’t do much with your dexterity this time around, so your AC is honestly pretty terrible, especially for a caster class build. Your HP almost makes up for it, but it’s still not a great look for you.
Those levels in sorcerer we took might make your healing spells stronger and give you your only source of decent AC, but that also splits your spell list, keeping you from getting 9th level spells. Like every build, almost no benefit outweighs the wish spell.

Warlock Week: New Magic Items
Tumblr media
Bearded Devil Cowl
Wondrous Item (head), Very Rare, requires attunement by a warlock
This hood has a long tip that falls down the back of the wearer and a connected veil comprised of a Bearded Devil’s beard. Once per short rest, the wearer can use their reaction to attempt to curse a creature that they can see within 90 ft. of them when they take damage. The creature must make a DC 15 CON saving throw to resist the curse. A cursed creature bleeds from their new wound and the creature loses 1d10 hit points at the start of each of their turns until they either receive magical healing or a creature treats them with a DC 12 Medicine check.
Binding Talisman
Wondrous Item, Rare, requires attunement by a Pact of the Blade warlock
A stone with an inlaid gem about the size of a coin. It becomes a part of your pact weapon whenever you manifest it. When you summon your pact weapon, choose acid, cold, fire, or lightning. Your pact weapon deals +1d4 damage of the chosen type with each attack.
Boots of the Winter Queen
Wondrous Item (feet), Uncommon, requires attunement
These knee-high boots are made of thin leather and are trimmed with fur from an arctic hare. They seem far too thin for snow but keep you comfortably warm. While wearing the boots, you leave a trail of frost that coats surfaces and objects near your feet. If you step on calm water, ice forms beneath your feet and allows you to stand and move over the water easily. The ice melts in seconds after it appears, so only you can travel over the water in this way.
Blood Shield
Wondrous Item, Rare
A brooch that looks like a ruby kite shield. If you have a familiar as with the Find Familiar spell, you may use your reaction to give your familiar 10 temporary hit points and +5 AC until the start of your next turn.
Demon’s Horn
Magic Weapon (dagger), Rare
A curved glabrezu horn that can be used as a +1 dagger. Creatures dealt damage by the horn are cursed. While cursed, magical healing deals necrotic damage equal to the healing instead of healing. Cursing a new target causes the previous victim’s curse to be lifted. The horn also spoils food and clouds water that it touches.
Devil’s Tongue
Wondrous Item, Rare
A dried bearded devil tongue that drips blood whenever you lie, but grants you a +2 bonus to all Deception skill checks involving telling a lie. You can also use your action to force a creature that you can see within 60 ft. to make a WIS saving throw. On a failed save, the creature becomes cursed and cannot tell the truth. Cursing a new target causes the previous victim’s curse to be lifted, as does dismissing the curse as a bonus action. While a creature is cursed in this way, you do not benefit from the bonus to deception checks.
Dream Pigment
Wondrous Item, Uncommon
A Pact of the Tome warlock can mix this pigment with a simple liquid binder to create a pearlescent deep purple ink. If the warlock drips a drop of the ink onto a sleeping creature’s head and then spills a thimble of ink onto an empty page of their Book of Shadows, the ink will arrange itself into words. The words describe the events transpiring in the sleeping creature’s current dream as they occur.
False Path Stones
Wondrous Item, Uncommon
A moleskin bag filled with 3d6+1 tiny polished rocks. Placing a rock on the ground creates an illusionary gravel path 10 ft. wide and 60 ft. long starting from the stone. You must place two stones within 60 ft. of one another to denote the direction of this path. The path seems like it has been there for at least a decade. The illusion is adaptive and the gravel can be picked up and handled and makes noise when trodden upon like any gravel path. Only picking up the original magic stones will cause the illusion to be lifted, and finding each stone again (even if you are the one who placed them) takes a DC 25 Perception check.
Flower of the Summer Queen
Wondrous Item, Uncommon
When a creature is touched by this beautiful, undying flower and the command word is spoken, the creature becomes inexplicably happy and content. The creature must make a WIS saving throw (DC 17) or become affected as if by a Calm Emotions spell and then becomes charmed by the creature that spoke the command word for 1 hour. Using this ability destroys the item.
Frozen Tear of the Winter Prince
Wondrous Item, Uncommon
When a creature is touched by this tear-shaped diamond and the command word is spoken, the creature is gripped by sadness and despair. The creature must make a CHA saving throw (DC 17) or become affected as if by a Bane spell for 1 hour. Using this ability destroys the item.
Gift of the Patron
Wondrous Item (neck), Very Rare, requires attunement by a warlock
An amulet given to you by your warlock patron. As an action, you can take on the visage of your dread patron, gaining an aura of awe or fear (your choice) to a distance of 60 feet. For 1 minute or until you lose your concentration (as if you were casting a concentration spell), each hostile creature that starts its turn in this aura must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be charmed (if you chose awe) or frightened (if you chose fear) until the aura ends. At the end of each of their turns, a charmed or feared creature can attempt a new saving throw to end this effect. A creature that succeeds on this saving throw is immune to your aura for 24 hours . Once you use this ability you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
Golden Chain
Wondrous Item, Rare, requires attunement by a Pact of the Chain warlock
A small golden chain that gives you a greater connection to your familar. If the attuned creature has a familiar as with the Find Familiar spell, the familiar has their maximum hit points increased by 10. As a bonus action, the attuned creature can pay any number of hit points to give their familiar an equal number of temporary hit points. The attuned creature can also have their familiar pay any number of their hit points to grant the attuned creature an equal number of temporary hit points. Temporary hit points from the Golden Chain disappear after 1 minute.
Hag’s Doorknob
Wondrous Item, Rare
This simple carved wooden doorknob is not attached to any door. Placing the doorknob on a flat stone, wood, or plaster surface allows the owner to cast Passwall. Pulling on the doorknob opens a door leading to the passage created by Passwall. Once the duration of the spell expires, the doorknob fades away with the door and passage.
Hezrou Heart
Wondrous Item, Uncommon, requires attunement by a warlock
A lumpy sickly green heart of a hezrou demon. The heart begins to beat when a poisoned creature is within 30 ft. of it. It can be used to detect poisons in this way. Spell or abilities that you use that deal poison damage to creatures within 30 ft. deal an additional 1d8 poison damage.
Kappa Shell
Wondrous Item, Rare
Once per day, this empty shell of a kappa can be filled with water to cast Watery Sphere. The spell does not require concentration as it usually does, but if you perform any other action other than maintaining the spell or use any of your movement speed, you must make a DC 15 Acrobatics check to keep the water in the shell. If the water spills from the shell while the spell is active, the spell ends.
The Necronomicon
Artifact, Legendary, requires attunement
A collection of forbidden stories, arcane lore, and necromantic spells written by a variety of authors ranging from minor cultists to notorious liches to alien aberrations. A rather insane chapter refers to a being known as Atropus, but the rest is unintelligible. The book is often confused for the Book of Vile Darkness by those with passing knowledge, but its subject matter is that of death rather than evil.
The Necronomicon cannot be destroyed, but can be banished to the moon-sized being Atropus. Attempts to destroy it or send it anywhere else will simply cause it to reappear on a random evil-aligned plane or somewhere else on the Material Plane.
Attuning to the book requires a WIS saving throw, an INT saving throw, and a CHA saving throw. Each failed save reduces the creature’s WIS score by 3. A creature that fails all three saving throws is driven completely insane permanently. Their WIS score returns to normal at a rate of 1 point per day after it is no longer attuned to the book.
Random Properties: The Necronomicon has the following random properties:
3 minor beneficial properties
1 major beneficial property
3 minor detrimental properties
2 major detrimental properties
Spellcasting: The Necronomicon has a number of charges equal to the attuned creature’s CHA score. The attuned creature can replenish any number of charges after finishing a long rest, spending 1 hit point for each charge restored. The book allows its attuned owner to do the following. All saving throws have a DC of 18.
Speak with Dead (at will)
Animate Dead (2 charges)
Create Undead (3 charges)
Circle of Death (3 charges)
Finger of Death (4 charges)
Undead Power: Undead created by the Necronomicon have a bonus to attack rolls, damage rolls, and AC equal to the attuned creature’s CHA modifier.
Control Undead: Once per long rest using your action, you can force an undead creature to make a WIS saving throw (DC 14). On a failed save, the creature obeys your commands for the next 24 hours.
Lore: You can reference the Necronomicon for information about undead, aberrations, or the Far Realms. Double your proficiency bonus for INT-based checks on those subjects.
Nerve Lash Gloves
Wondrous Item (hands), Very Rare, requires attunement by a warlock
These gloves appear to be made from some sort of alien leather with a woodworm-like pattern. The gloves attune to a creature by being worn. Once they become attuned to a creature, the creature feels a sting of pain like needles being driven into their wrists. Once this occurs, the gloves can only be removed by dealing 6 damage to the wearer.
The gloves are bound to the nerve endings of the wearer, who can use a bonus action to cause their nerve endings to extend into multi-tailed whips about three feet long that crackle with electricity. The creature can use the Attack action to make up to two melee spell attacks against creatures within 5 ft. Each attack deals 3d6 lightning damage and creatures hit must make a DC 14 CON saving throw or become Stunned until the attuned creature’s next turn. The whips can be retracted with another bonus action.
Red Cap
Wondrous Item (head), Rare, requires attunement
A simple hood or hat belonging to a murderous fey creature called a redcap. Though the redcap has been slain, it hat retains some of its power. When you soak the entirety of this cloth hat in fresh blood (less than 1 minute), you heal 2 hit points at start of each round until the cap dries, or about 5 minutes. This effect ceases to function within 120 ft. of a cleric’s holy symbol or any symbol of a deity.
Robes of the Pactmaker
Wondrous Item (chest), Rare, requires attunement by a warlock
These dark robes resonate with symbols of a warlock’s patron. The patterns glow and seem to slowly float aimlessly over the surface of the garment. The warlock can treat a warlock spell slot of a spell they cast as one level higher than normal, even if it would bring the slot beyond 5th level. Once the warlock uses this ability, they must finish a short rest before they can use it again.
Stinger of Horror
Magic Weapon (dagger), Rare, requires attunement by a warlock
A bony tail of a cloaker that has been fashioned into a weapon. The item is treated as a +2 dagger. Creatures attacked by the dagger (not necessarily hit by it) must make a DC 16 WIS saving throw. On a failed saving throw, the creature becomes frightened until the attacker’s next turn. A creature that succeeds at their saving throw becomes immune to the effects of the Stinger for 24 hours.

Fey Boons and Banes, pt 1
Tumblr media
“Witch Spell” © Alessandro Poli. Accessed at his ArtStation page here
[Which one is the fey I leave you to decide]
Fey Boons and Banes
The following uses the “Fey Boons and Banes” rules from Pathfinder Adventure Path 119: Prisoners of the Blight. These are abilities that fey creatures can bestow upon those they favor or curses they can inflict on those that anger them. A boon or bane acts as a spell-like ability with a casting time of 1 minute, a range of touch, a spell level equal to ½ the fey’s HD (maximum 9th level) and a caster level equal to the fey’s HD. An unwilling target can resist a fey boon or bane with a Will save: the DC is given below for an average specimen.
Aegipan (3rd level spell, CL 6, DC 15) Aegipans are benevolent creatures, and may use their boons to reward those who assist them on their missions of peace and protection. They may also use this ability to assist people lost at sea or during a shipwreck. Aegipans typically reserve their banes for the cruelest villains, who find that the sea itself turns against them.
Boon: You gain a swim speed equal to your land speed. You gain a +8 bonus on all Swim checks, and may take 10 on Swim checks even when rushed or threatened. This boon lasts for one day per caster level (6 days for the typical aegipan).
Bane: When you are in the water, you always suffer penalties to Swim checks as if you were under heavy encumbrance. In addition, you can only hold your breath for half the normal period of time. This bane is permanent.
Agropelter (5th level spell, CL 11, DC 17) The peevish lumberwoods fey knows as agropelters behave much like wild beasts, and they are much more likely to bestow their boons on animals than they are on mortal creatures. Agropelters may sneak into lodges and lumber camps at night to use their banes on sleeping targets—the better to kill them with thrown clubs during the day.
Boon: You gain Throw Anything as a bonus feat. If you do not have hands with which to make thrown weapon attacks, you can still throw objects with your natural appendages for normal range and damage as appropriate for your size. If you already have the Throw Anything feat, you gain Improvised Weapon Mastery as a bonus feat. If you already have both feats, you treat all improvised thrown weapons as being magical and silver for the purposes of overcoming damage reduction. This boon is permanent.
Bane: You become a magnet to thrown weapons and projectiles of all kinds. Ranged weapon attacks made against you do not suffer any penalties from cover or concealment. This bane lasts for one day per caster level of the agropelter (11 days for the typical aegipan).
Amadan (5th level spell, CL 10, DC 18) Amadans are found in mortal lands as often as they are in the realms of the fey, and so they may make friends among mortals upon whom to bestow their boons. Particularly skilled and innocent mortals are those that make the greatest impression on the cynical amadans, and the amadan’s influence can help keep them out of trouble. A scorned amadan, however, will not hesitate to use its bane to both humiliate and endanger its enemies.
Boon: You may cast mirror image as a spell-like ability, with a caster level equal to your HD. You may do so three times; once you have, this boon expires. If not used, this boon expires in one week’s time.
Bane: You find the most inappropriate things hilariously funny. Whenever you enter a stressful situation, including combat, you must succeed a Will save (DC 18) or be affected by a hideous laughter spell. If you successfully save, you cannot be affected by this ability for one hour, even if other stressful situations emerge. This bane is permanent.
Bogle (2nd level spell, CL 5, DC 14) Bogles rarely, if ever, bestow their boons to anyone. Only the most vicious anarchists attract a bogle’s positive attention—their boon is given to those allies in order to protect them from the bogle’s vermin shock troops. Bogles eagerly bestow their bane on farmers and other civilized folk when they can. A bogle defeated in combat will often feign surrender in order to curse the foe that bested it out of pure spite.
Boon: Vermin cannot sense you, even with extraordinary or supernatural senses (like blindsense, blindsight or scent). If you attack a creature with the vermin type, this effect is broken for that creature only. This boon lasts for one day.
Bane: Every night at midnight, you must succeed a DC 14 Fortitude save or take 1d2 points of Constitution damage, as if your body was being consumed from within by insects. This damage does not heal naturally through rest, although spells like lesser restoration can remove it. This bane lasts for one week.
Enenra (5th level spell, CL 10, DC 18) Enenras are benevolent creatures that use their boons to assist those who fight forest fires or that simply need to escape them. Arsonists and those that use fire recklessly, however, may find themselves cursed with an enenra’s bane and feel the heat of their own flames.
Boon: You can see through smoke and fog as if it were not there. In addition, you gain fire resistance 10. This ability lasts for one week.
Bane: Any time you deal fire damage to a creature or living plant, you take an equal amount of fire damage. If there is a save for this effect (such as a fireball spell), you receive a save against the same DC in order to take half or no damage, as is usual for the spell or ability. If you have fire immunity or resistance, it does not apply against this damage. This bane is permanent.
Hiderigami (5th level spell, CL 11, DC 19) The desert-dwelling hiderigami are the protectors of those arid landscapes, and use their boons to benefit those who would protect the desert from intrusion and exploitation. They especially favor travelers who can tell them about other deserts in faraway lands, or teach them about the strange life that requires frequent rains or cool temperatures. Hiderigami will not hesitate to use their bane to thwart miners, land developers and farmers seeking to transform the desert into a new landscape.
Boon: You become immune to magical effects that would cause fatigue or exhaustion. You must still sleep or become fatigued or exhausted, and physical exertion (like a forced march) can still cause these conditions. In addition, you require only ¼ as much food and water as is normal for a creature of your size. This boon lasts for one month.
Bane: You permanently suffer from excruciating sunburn. You are sickened and fatigued. Whenever you take damage from a fire spell or effect, you must succeed a Fortitude save (DC 19) or be nauseated with pain for one round. This bane is permanent.

Character Build: Aloy (Horizon: Zero Dawn)
Rather than working on another Justice League or Teen Titans character build (which I’m well behind on), I decided to take a crack at an entirely different character. Horizon: Zero Dawn follows Aloy, an outcast huntress, and her exploits in fighting giant robot dinosaurs and bandits.
Tumblr media
Race and Class
The first race that springs to mind is human, since Aloy’s just a person (albeit a talented one). In the world of Horizon, there are only humans (and the machines). But each human society is different, in ways great or small, like the fantasy races of Pathfinder. With that view, we might look at the Nora (Aloy’s people) as being closer to elves, with their connection to (and reverence of) nature. Aloy, an outcast among the Nora, might be more closely represented by a half-elf: not quite Nora, but not quite an outlander. Half-elf also gives her Skill Focus as a bonus feat, probably going into Stealth or Survival, depending on what aspect you prefer to focus on.
It's hard to say exactly what class Aloy is, especially since her tactics vary from player to player, and her abilities vary slightly by build. But some abilities are held constant: ability to sneak, deadly strikes when targets are unaware, and prowess in melee combat. I waffled a lot on a class selection, but ultimately settled on the slayer. Combining the ranger’s mastery of the land with the rogue's deadly stealth, slayers have a lot of versatility. I think the regular, out-of-the-box slayer is best, but I'll discuss decent archetypes in Overall Thoughts, below.
Ability Scores
Again, this can vary a bit, but a few things are pretty constant. Aloy is strong and nimble  (watch her climb if you have any doubts) but extremely perceptive, and clever. That said, she is not exactly personable, and is rather blunt, so her Charisma is probably her lowest ability score. Her Constitution and Intelligence are both adequate (at least a +1 modifier), with a higher Wisdom and Strength. In all likelihood, her Dexterity is probably her highest ability score.
Tumblr media
Skills
Slayers give six skill ranks per level, or more if Aloy’s Intelligence modifier is decent, which is good. We’ll need all of them. Acrobatics, Climb, and Swim all come in handy when she’s traversing the dangerous terrain of her homeland, and Craft (Bows) lets her make custom arrows at will. Her Heal, Knowledge (Geography), and Knowledge (Nature) are probably passably high, and her Perception, Stealth and Survival are all strong. Other skills like Ride, Profession (Herbalism), and Sense Motive come into play some amount, and might be worth a rank each.
In short, like most video game protagonists, Aloy is good at almost everything. The big thing is choosing which aspect to focus on. Exploration? Stealth and Infiltration?
Levels 1-6
Feats: Quick Draw, Precise Shot, Point-Blank Shot, Master Craftsman (Bows), Rapid Shot
Slayer Talents: Ranger Combat Style (Precise Shot), Rogue Talent (Terrain Mastery), Ranger Combat Style (Rapid Shot)
Progress: At early levels, Aloy works as a pretty basic switch-hitter. Quick Draw allows her to quickly switch between her longbow and spear (which is probably a guisarme or halberd rather than a longspear). She quickly becomes quite good with a bow, thanks to Rapid Shot, but lags behind with her spear. Her 5th-level feat (Master Craftsman) seems pretty useless at this point: a measly +2 to Craft (Bows) is barely worth a feat, but just wait for next level.
To capture Aloy’s dizzying array of weapon’s and tactics, we should stock up on special arrows. Barbed, tanglefoot, and trip arrows work like her ropecaster to bind or hamper an enemy. Bleed and thistle arrows add a bit more damage, incendiary and slow burn arrows mimic her fiery arrows, and other arrows like lodestone, raining, smoke, and splintercloud can give an advantage in the right situation. Most of these are mediocre at higher levels, but can be pretty useful early on.
Tumblr media
Levels 7-12
Feats: Craft Magic Arms and Armor, Power Attack, Manyshot,
Slayer Talents: Deadly Range, Assassinate, Slayer Camouflage
Progress: At 7th level, Aloy finally gets Craft Magic Arms and Armor, which lets her use her Craft (Bows) skill to create and upgrade magic bows. More importantly, she can create magical arrows. Arrow of charming, hushing arrow, searing arrow, phase arrow, sizzling arrow, slaying arrow, sleep arrow… the options are dizzying, and you can create all of them for half price, if you succeed in the skill check (DC 5 + the item’s caster level, plus 5 for each spell that it requires if you can’t cast them). A sizzling arrow, for example, has a caster level of 9, which means it has a base craft DC of 14. But since Aloy can’t cast acid arrow, one of the prerequisites of the item, the DC increases to 19. Just remember that if you fail your Craft check, “the item does not function and the materials and time are wasted”.
Now that she has Power Attack, her spear should be capable of doing adequate damage, so she’s not helpless when something closes in on her. One of her biggest offensive abilities is Assassinate, which means she has a chance to automatically kill any target that she has time to study, from up to 40 feet away (with Deadly Range).
Tumblr media
Levels 13 and Onwards
Feats: Four or five open feat choices. Clustered Shots, Improved Called Shot (requires Combat Expertise), Learn Ranger Trap, Merciless Butchery, Robot’s Bane, Snap Shot (requires Weapon Focus), Technologist, and Vital Strike are good things to consider, as well as Improved and Greater versions of Snap Shot or Vital Strike.
Slayer Talents: Rogue Advanced Talent (Stealthy Sniper), Deadly Range, Rogue Advanced Talent (Evasion or Feat), Woodland Stride.
Progress: I left this area a bit vague, because it’s hard to say for sure what she can do at higher levels. Learn Ranger Trap (and maybe Extra Ranger Trap) are good for reproducing the various traps she learns to use, while Improved (and Greater) Called Shot are similar to her ability to break components off of enemies to debilitate them. Robot’s Bane and Technologist are good, but circumstantial (i.e. useless if a campaign doesn’t have robots), and Merciless Butchery is only good if you can find a way to stun or frighten foes. It all depends on your specific build in mind, and the campaign.
With that said, I would choose Clustered Shots, Combat Expertise, Improved Called Shot, and either Learn Ranger Trap or Vital Strike, to reflect the way I played Horizon: Zero Dawn.
Tumblr media
Overall Thoughts
I went with the standard slayer, but one could easily choose the Sniper archetype, for a more bow-focused build, or even the Woodland Sniper (Ultimate Wilderness) if you prefer. The Bounty Hunter archetype nets her some extra weapon proficiencies (pun intended), including the bola and net. The problem is that all three of these replace the tracking ability, which I felt was pretty crucial to staying true to the character.
I like the way the build turned out, for the most part, but some things were missing. I would have liked room for the Fast Stealth rogue talent, and earlier access to Power Attack and Vital Strike, to keep her melee abilities relevant. Unfortunately, there are only so many feats and talents available, so we make do. There was also no easy way I could find to incorporate the ability to hack/tame machines into the build, which is also fairly crucial for a proper representation of Aloy.
I think this build peaks around levels eight to ten: she is able to craft magic arrows during downtime, snipe foes from afar, and smack down anyone who closes in on her by switching to her spear.

Boggart
Tumblr media
Concept art from Labyrinth © Brian Froud. Accessed at the Muppet Central forums here
[The last two books I do not have access to the original art for--the artist never uploaded them to her dA gallery, so my choices are finding new pieces or taking screenshots from the PDFs. In addition, I got the chance to add fey boons and banes to these, which are always fun. There is a boggart in PFRPG, but it has little to nothing to do with the original evil house fairy. Consider calling the official version a hobyah or tutguts instead]
Boggart CR 2 CE Fey A tiny man, no taller than knee-high, glares at you. His entire mien is shabby and filthy, and his hands and feet seem disproportionately large. He clutches a pair of sharp scissors and mutters nastily to himself.
A boggart is a wicked house-fairy that devotes all of its energy to making misery for whatever house it has chosen to haunt. Any family may find itself host to a boggart, although the homes of those who have angered other fey creatures seem unusually susceptible to such infestations. Boggarts hide out anywhere they are unlikely to be caught—inside walls, in cellars or attics or in outlying sheds and carriage-houses. In fact, most boggarts have several nests on their chosen property in case one is discovered and destroyed. A boggart’s tricks include spoiling food, breaking furniture, keeping its victims up at night with strange and frightening noises, crippling livestock and pets and generally making itself a nuisance. If violence is done to them, boggarts will respond in turn, using household items such as scissors and knives as weapons of terror. Boggarts rarely are dissuaded by such a simple remedy as moving away, and will stow themselves in furniture and ride to their victim’s new home.
Despite their tenacity and cruelty, boggarts can be convinced to make peace through bribery. Gold coins and fresh milk are their favorite gifts, but such payment rarely lasts long until the boggart gets bored and starts making mischief again. After years of harassment, a boggart will eventually tire of tormenting the same people and move to find a new host. Boggarts not found in a domestic setting are rare, but when they do they play violent pranks on travelers on the hills and moors. These boggarts are often mistaken for other types of fey, such as pixies or duendes. Boggarts are omnivorous creatures with a fondness for human foods like bread, cheese and milk, but they sometimes cultivate “livestock” in the walls of the houses in which they live—typically destructive pests such as mice, cockroaches or termites. Boggarts are typically solitary creatures, but manors or castles may find themselves host to an entire family of the monstrous little fey. The average boggart stands just over two feet tall and weighs 10 pounds, although they often make themselves look bigger using tall hats and thick clothing.
Boggart Boons and Banes (2nd level, CL 3, DC 14) On rare occasions, a boggart may bestow its boon on a particularly generous host, one that accepts its protection racket and is kind to it. More often, they inflict their bane on a sleeping target to further frustrate those it lives with.
Boon: Even the most foul food nourishes you. You gain a +4 bonus on all saving throws against the sickened and nauseated conditions, as well as ingested poisons and disease. This boon lasts for 1 week.
Bane: Once per day, a random object in your possession gains the broken condition. This cannot destroy an already broken item. This bane lasts for 1 week.
