Terra Memoria ‘Gameplay’ trailer
Gematsu Source
Tumblr media
Publisher Dear Villagers and developer La Moutarde have released a new gameplay trailer for turn-based RPG Terra Memoria ahead of its playable appearance at Gamescom 2023, which will run from August 23 to 27 at Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany.
“With this new trailer we wanted to showcase Terra Memoria‘s colorful characters and its lively towns and terrain, as well as offer a glimpse into creating a community by building a village and fighting monsters,” said La Moutarde game director François Bertrand in a press release. “Terra Memoria hearkens back to classic globe-trotting fantasy RPGs, with a new coat of paint and modern structure. Ultimately it’s about the spirit of adventure, and a group of misfits coming together through their travels. It’s a great, big hug of a game and we hope this trailer conveys its uplifting spirit.”
Here is a brief overview of the game, via Dear Villagers:
Terra Memoria sends players on a globe-trotting journey full of exploration, crafting, building, and friendship! A shortage of magic crystals and the sudden awakening of ancient robots pushes six new friends into a crazy investigation through Terra, a whimsical and cozy world combining 3D graphics and pixel art. Players control all party members, as each embarks on their own story and brings their unique skills to the table as they engage in Terra Memoria‘s turn-based combat. You’ll have to do more than fight though, as to save the world players will have to craft, cook, camp, and master Terra Memoria‘s unique building system that allows them to create objects, solve environmental puzzles, and eventually build their own little village. As players explore Terra Memoria‘s different countries, they’ll have to find missing pages of regional guides, offering info on new recipes, important characters, clues to help you during your investigation, and more information about regional specialties. Understanding local customs is key to a fruitful expedition.
Terra Memoria will be available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch, and PC via Steam. A release date has yet to be announced.

A Normal Lost Phone
by Dear Villagers
Genre: Adventure, Interactive Fiction, Puzzle
Pitch: Look through text messages, photos, and more on a lost phone to learn about its owner.
My expectations: I've heard of this! I don't expect to have my mind blown, but this series is fairly well regarded, right? Is "normal" meant to be ironic, like I'm about to stumble upon some horrific mystery, or is this going to be a contemplative look at the hints at the life of an ordinary individual captured on a piece of consumer electronics? I hope it's the latter.
Review:
Content warnings are important. They are an encouraging sign of social progress, and I hope we never move backwards. It is awesome that we live in an era where it is common to respect each other’s sensitivities. I hate content warnings.
Tumblr media
I hate when a well-crafted, slowly unfolding story—a story where all the mysteries would fall into place if you just knew that one crucial piece of missing information—gives away the whole game before it’s even begun. A Normal Lost Phone presents an absorbing slice of life, written with a masterful grasp of nonlinear storytelling and keenly observed characters, but I was on the lookout for the thing before I’d clicked past the title screen.
Tumblr media
A content warning was the right call. No one who might be hurt by said content deserves to be caught off guard. I wish I had a better solution, but I don’t. I mean, I’m being as vague as I can, but I’ve already told you there’s a thing.
A single, admirable, necessary sentence tainted my experience, but it did not ruin it. The call to empathy and understanding still resonates. This story’s strength is not in its ending but its telling. Highly recommended.
+ Invites you into the life of a stranger. Spins an absorbing, painful, small-scale yarn within the confines of a phone, where all the disconnected, seemingly disconnected puzzle pieces click into place as the context is revealed. + Dreary indie pop from a surprising number of artists. It's not enough music to cover the game's total playtime, and I never found an option to make the playlist automatically repeat, but I found my fingers tapping along to the tunes often enough that I didn't mind having to manually reset it.
– Content warning gives away major themes too soon. The seemingly incongruous details that should be intriguing fall flat if you've already predicted where the story's going. (A content warning was still the right call.) – While I like the idea of the handful of password-cracking puzzles, and even felt satisfied with some of them in execution, it's a drag when you know you've seen the answer somewhere and have to dig through dozens of messages to get what you need. – SPOILER! SPOILER! SPOILER! Are you playing a character? Are you playing as yourself? This question is left to your imagination, but whoever you are, there's no reason to believe you have any connection whatsoever to the phone's owner or any of the characters in the story. In order to progress, you must read personal message, send sensitive messages and even photographs—not as yourself, a stranger who picked up a stranger's phone, but as Sam, the phone's owner. It's incredibly invasive, and it serves no purpose except to satisfy your own curiosity. Now, if I could do the thing that I would realistically do in this situation (look for contact information and return the phone to its owner without invading anyone's privacy), we wouldn't have a game. I don't feel bad about playing a game in the way it was intended, but I do feel weird about it. It's a game about feeling empathy for a person who keeps secrets; a person who is right to keep those secrets; a person whose secrets should be respected. And the goal is simply to satisfy my own curiosity, no matter what violations that entails? Weird, weird choice.

Another Lost Phone: Laura's Story
by Dear Villagers
Price (US): $2.99
Included In: Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality, Indie Bundle for Palestinian Aid
Genre: Adventure
Pitch: Pitch.
My expectations: A Normal Lost Phone was great. Alt-Frequencies was even better. Accidental Queens hasn't disappointed yet!
Review:
The streak continues! Another Lost Phone is Accidental Queens’ best work to date.
The setup and structure will be familiar to anyone who’s played A Normal Lost Phone: Dig through a stranger’s private messages. Learn their story. Find their passwords. Further violate their privacy.
Tumblr media
I appreciate the new disclaimer that says, “Hey, this is a game. Don’t actually do this, ya creep!” The player’s role in this story is still weird, but there is at least some narrative justification. I ultimately felt positive about my intrusive password cracking.
Tumblr media
Gradually revealing the normal beneath the appearance of “normal” is the appeal of these games. I was always a little ahead of the writing in A Normal Lost Phone and Alt-Frequencies. The second I started Another Lost Phone, I was on alert. “What’s the thing?” I couldn’t help but wonder. “What’s the social issue this time? What’s the political message?”
Tumblr media
What a surprise it was to…be surprised! There isn’t some out-of-nowhere twist. The thing that isn’t initially being said is right there, all along. I picked up on the clues and felt funny about them, but a part of me rejected the truth. And boy, did that make the truth hit hard.
+ Masterful nonlinear, epistolary storytelling with a powerful message. + Believable, three-dimensional characters. + It's not afraid to just be a video game now and then. Go find those passwords! + More confident and focused than A Normal Lost Phone. They keep getting better!
– Built for a phone screen. Some font options would have been nice. – More puzzles, please! – Knowing you've seen the password but not remembering where can mean lots of re-reading. This is good when it forces you to see an old exchange with new context, but it often just means a lot of clicking and scrolling while skimming for four-digit numbers. – There hasn't been a new release from Accidental Queens in four years, and no other projects have been announced. Um, no. I need more.
🧡🧡🧡🧡🤍 Bottom Line: This review has been all about the powerful narrative and message of Another Lost Phone: Laura's Story. You might have noticed that I didn't say anything about what Laura's story is. The people who need Laura's Story the most don't know they need it. For that reason, I want to recommended to it everybody. There are, however, topics that not everyone can handle. You either need to be surprised by Another Lost Phone, or you absolutely do not. Go in cold, if you can. Find a content warning if you have any doubts.
