Half Truths

It’s the end of the day, Deeks is finishing up something on his laptop. Every week, he has to turn in extra paperwork to LAPD—Kensi does not envy him that—which means he’ll probably be there later than everyone else.

Callen and Sam left 20 minutes ago, and Hetty had drifted off with a cryptic reference to some celebrity, leaving Kensi to search for busy work to occupy the time. Normally she’d be gone by now too, but she’s trying to be a better partner. Plus, something Deeks said the other day has been nagging at her.

“You don’t have to keep me company.” Deeks comment in the otherwise silent bullpen makes Kensi jump just as she’s contemplating attacking the mess of…stuff covering the surface of her desk.

“Oh please, get over yourself. I was not waiting for you,” Kensi retorts automatically, because that’s the status quo they established, and she doesn’t feel comfortable admitting that she just might care about him just the tiniest bit.

“Uh-huh. You just organized your entire inbox and color coded your pens. You’re hanging around for something,” Deeks points out, because of course he’d noticed. He’s way too observant for his own good.

“Fine. I just have been thinking about something you said when we we were in the desert.”

“If this is about my bodily functions—”

“No,” she cuts him off before she lets him derail her. Tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, she clears her throat. “You said your dad hates you and that…that he aimed a shot gun at you.” Her voice softens at the end. Like saying it too loudly will make it real.

Deeks stops, head tipped downward so his hair falls over his forehead, concealing his eyes. He’s still in a way he only ever is when he’s completely serious.

“I did.”

“How much of it was true?” She hopes it’s a case of him embellishing, as he tends to do. Yet, he’d been so nonchalant, lacking any of the grandiose behavior she’s grown used to when he’s crafting a story. Besides, as far as Kensi can tell, there was no reason for him to lie.

“Parts of it,” he replies finally, closing the lid of his laptop.

“Which parts,” she can’t help asking.

“Eh, you haven’t unlocked that level of the Marty Deeks story yet, I’m afraid,” he jokes. She hears the request to end the subject, loud and clear. “C’mon, let’s get out here before the Chinese place closes.”

Kensi follows him out, letting him fill the air with chatter about the last time he went surfing. She nods along appropriately, but her minds is still elsewhere.

Though she doubts he’ll ever confirm it, she certain at least one of the truths he’d told involved his dad aiming a weapon at him. It makes her shudder, makes her rethink the man she so often teases, makes her feel an unexpected wave of protection for him.

Jogging a couple steps to catch up, she falls into line with Deeks.

A/N: Since Deeks’ first mention of the shotgun incident contradicts what we find out later, I’ve always thought that it was Deeks’ way of telling a part of his past, without revealing the full truth. Likely because he’d be worried about Kensi’s response to his age and actions.

A/N: A fluffy little dialogue drabble.

Fatima: Don’t you guys ever get tired of spending time together?

Deeks, immediately: Nope.

Kensi: Why would we get tired of each other?

Fatima, awkwardly: You know…you work and workout together, go to the same trainings. It just seems like you’d want to spend some time apart.

Deeks, smiling at Kensi: Kensi’s the cream in my coffee, my Ladybird, and the only person I’m willing to share a bagel sandwich with. I’m lucky for every second I get to be with her. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Kensi, fondly: You’re so cheesy. Which is one of the many, many things I love about him. *she shrugs* We only get so much time in this world, so why not spend it with the person I care about most?

Fatima, wryly: You guys make it really hard for us poor, lonely, single people.

Deeks: Yeah, sorry.

Kensi: If it helps any, it took us like 9-10 years to get to this point.

Fatima: Actually, yes it does.

Wrongfully Accused

Deeks stormed into Rosa’s high school, Kensi by his side. He was trying extremely hard not to no one of “those” parents right now, but a call from the Dean of Students informing them Rosa had been suspended for the day had him in fight mode.

“Remember, we want to stay calm, professional, and open-minded,” Kensi reminded him. Deeks sent her a look over his shoulder and muttered,

“You’re the one who asked if I could send a threatening letter on my office stationary.”

“I was joking,” she hissed back as they were buzzed into the main office. They stepped up to the front desk, where a woman with short curly hair was on the phone. When she hung up, Deeks pulled on his best customer service smile.

“Hi, I’m Marty Deeks.”

“And I’m Kensi Blye,” Kensi added.

“We’re Rosa Reyes’ parents.”

“Oh yes,” the secretary said, offering them each a stick on visitor badge. “She’s just down the hall. You can go see her, but please wait until the Dean is available to speak with you.”

“Can you tell us what happened?” Kensi asked.

“I’m afraid you’ll have to ask Mr. Ruddell.”

“Of course. Thank you.”

Taking that as a dismissal, they headed in the direction the secretary indicated. They found Rosa sitting outside an office a couple rooms down a long hallway. Her was bowed over her raised knees, her defeated posture increasing Deeks’ concern.

“Rosa,” he called out softly, and she looked up, relief followed by embarrassment flashing across her face.

“Kensi, Deeks,” she said, standing, and accepting a hug from each of them.

“Are you ok?” Kensi asked, cupping Rosa’s cheeks as Deeks looked for visual signs of injury.

“Yes, I’m fine.” She nodded shortly.

“What happened?”

As soon as Deeks asked the question, Rosa glanced down, her reluctance to speak palpable.

“It’s ok. Whatever happened, we’ll figure it out together,” Deeks assured her.

“Mrs. Kelly kicked me out of class,” Rosa finally revealed.

“What? Why?” Deeks asked in surprise. He. Knew Rosa wasn’t perfect, and he’d never held her to that expectation, but he couldn’t imagine her causing any problems worthy of expulsion.

“She said my phone was ringing, but it was not. I always put it on mute or in my locker before a class,” Rosa explained, a bit of fire entering her voice which made Deeks oddly proud.

“Did you tell her that?” Kensi asked.

“Yes. She didn’t believe me though and by the time I got my phone out, the ringing stopped. She told me to gather my things and come down here.”

“Over one phone call?”

Rosa shrugged. “She really doesn’t like students being on their phone during class,” she answered.

“Where’s your phone now?” Deeks asked, falling into lawyer mode.

“Um, she confiscated it before I left the room.”

“I see.”

“What does that mean?” Rosa asked with a hint of nervousness returning. “I promise I didn’t do it.”

“We believe you,” Kensi said, squeezing Rosa’s shoulder. “Deeks is just mentally crafting his defense on your behalf.”

“My defense? I don’t think that’s really necessary.”

“Oh yes it is,” Kensi and Deeks said together. They shared a look.

“You’re not taking the blame for something you didn’t do,” Deeks told Rosa firmly.

“Thank you,” she whispered, offering him a grateful smile.

“That’s kind of our job.”

“Plus, Deeks loves a good reason to argue,” Kensi added.

“Ok, but please try not to scare Mr. Ruddell too badly,” Rosa requested.

“No promises,” Deeks said.

A/N: Once again, drawn from a real-life scenario. One time when I was getting ready to take an exam in undergrad, someone’s phone went off. The professor walked up to me and said my phone was ringing. I insisted it wasn’t and started to get my phone out to show him it was off, but whoever did have the ringing phone silenced it before I could. While I didn’t get kicked out, the professor gave me this knowing, judgy look.
