Shadow over Innsmouth adaptation where it depicts the Deep Ones as, like, normal people. The "transforming into a Deep One" deal is a volunary magic thing transmitted from parent to child (or whatever) and it isn't remotely mandatory or inevitable. Basically that and various other elements just bang you over the head with the fact that Robert Olmstead and Zadok Allen, whose dialogue and interactions are taken directly from Lovecraft, are unreliable narrators who are just really really racist and are making the worst-faith possible interpretations of the things happening in the town, with Zadok in some cases making things up wholesale. Like it's been mentioned elsewhere, but we only have Zadok's word on a lot of the things the Deep Ones got up to, and Zadok is not characterized as a reliable source of information. In the end, Robert, who allowed his transformation to begin happening because he genuinely didn't realize it was voluntary, breaks his cousin out of the sanatorium, and they make it to Y'ha-nthlei, where a lot of people are angry at Robert for his part in the attack on Innsmouth.

Alternatively I guess the Deep Ones are a lot more understanding than humans would be in that situation? Like they still have a right to be angry, like if someone who's marginalized still harms their own community, they've still harmed their own community, but still, like, restorative justice and all that.
