Laura Harris, Shawn Hatosy, Josh Hartnett, Clea DuVall, Elijah Wood, and Jordana Brewster in The Faculty (Robert Rodriguez, 1998)
Cast: Jordana Brewster, Clea DuVall, Laura Harris, Josh Hartnett, Shawn Hatosy, Elijah Wood, Salma Hayek, Famke Janssen, Piper Laurie, Christopher McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Robert Patrick, Usher, Jon Stewart, Daniel von Bargen. Screenplay: Kevin Williamson, David Wechter, Bruce Kimmel. Cinematography: Enrique Chediak. Production design: Cary White. Film editing: Robert Rodriguez. Music: Marco Beltrami.
Two premises are key to The Faculty: that adolescents see adults in authority as alien figures, and that high school is an instrument for instilling social conformity. The former has been the stuff of movies since Rebel Without a Cause (Nicholas Ray, 1955). The latter is in evidence today in the efforts of states like Florida and Texas to remake education along conservative ideological lines. Unfortunately, Kevin Williamson's screenplay and Robert Rodriguez's direction don't take either premise seriously enough to make more than a raucous but routine sci-fi/horror movie out of the material. The result is exactly as the Criterion Channel describes it: "The Breakfast Club meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers." John Hughes's 1985 movie put a Jock, a Brain, a Criminal, a Princess, and a Basket Case together in detention and explored the interaction of disparate high school stereotypes. The Faculty's misfit crew is a little more complex: Stan (Shawn Hatosy), the Jock, wants to quit the team, and Zeke (Josh Hartnett) is both Brain and Criminal: He concocts his own drug (unfortunately called "scat") in his lab, selling it out of the trunk of his car, and he has an off-the-charts IQ. Elijah Wood's Casey is bullied the way Brains typically are in teen movies, and Clea DuVall's Stokely is more of a goth-punk rebel than a Basket Case. Jordana Brewster's Delilah is an overachieving Princess, both editor of the school newspaper and captain of the cheerleading squad. They are joined by a New Girl, Marybeth Louise Hutchinson (Laura Harris), a transfer from Atlanta to their Ohio high school who comes complete with a somewhat cloying Southern accent. If The Faculty had kept its focus steadily on this group as they uncover the fact that their teachers have been taken over by an extraterrestrial organism, the movie would have had more coherence and suspense. Instead, it opens with the revelation that something is clearly causing the teachers and the principal to go mad and murderous. The principal (Bebe Neuwirth) is attacked in her office by the coach (Robert Patrick), and when she tries to escape, her way is blocked by a teacher, Mrs. Olson (Piper Laurie), who suddenly turns from meek to menacing. After missing work for a day or so, the principal returns as if nothing had happened. Meanwhile, other teachers have been showing personality changes that begin to spread into the student body. It's not long before the movie begins to invoke the other half of its inspiration, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Don Siegel, 1956; Philip Kaufman, 1978). Williamson, whose screenplay for Scream (1996) was full of allusions to other horror films, can't resist making the source for The Faculty explicit, so when his teenagers cite the movie themselves and use it as a guide to fighting the alien, The Faculty becomes too meta for its own good. There's enough to enjoy in the movie, including good performances by most of the cast. Hartnett is particularly good in the role of a guy who's embarrassed by his own intelligence. It's fun to see Jon Stewart, who plays a science teacher, in one of the acting performances he likes to make fun of. But when it comes to making good on its key premises and developing a real satiric edge, The Faculty has to be called a missed opportunity.

By the time they confronted Ms. Drake in the gym, it was so easy to assume that Mrs. Olson was the Queen, and I wish they had let her be.
Not only did she undergo the most dramatic and regal transformation, in my opinion, but she also made the most (nearly-)direct eye contact with the camera. We also never see her get infected, though her and the coach were the first faculty members to be turned. We saw the coach be approached by an unknown figure in the very beginning, hinting that he was attacked.
Also, the way she seemed to silently command the others; silently folding her hands over her lap when they heard Casey and Delilah in the closet–prompting the coach to go check it out–and how Ms. Drake silently follows after Stan and Stokely while Mrs. Olson merely continues staring.
I think it would have been better if everyone only suspected Marybeth, due to being new and claiming to be allergic to caffeine. Perhaps Zeke could have even let her skip the drug test, fostering even more distrust amongst the group and the audience. Even better if this sense of distrust almost caused them to lose.

Phew, finally got part three of all the characters to my graphic novel done: the adults! Some of these guys are parents to the main characters, but some are just family friends.

[ Firkle ]
Really, grape was the superior snow cone flavor if you asked him.
Not that anyone really wanted to talk to him.
Firkle Smith was heavily regarded in his hometown as something of a bad luck charm. Before his parents had put him up for adoption, he’d been the sole survivor of a bus crash, a freak accident at a football game, and car accident that killed eight people, his twin included.
As far as he was concerned, the only reason the town put up with him before Georgi’s, and a few other Vamp Kids’, deaths was because of that football game. Because of the sinkhole that opened up underneath the bleachers that night, the South Park Cows won against the North Park Clowns by forfeit.
Mostly because most of the deaths were North Park residents, and since the football team had perished first due to being under the bleachers during halftime, well... There was no one to run opposite the Cows.
Sure, South Park had its own losses, but none of them were high school football players. Craig Tucker, Pete and Henrietta Thelman, Reagan Irons, Harker Brown, Delilah Owens,  Mercedes Olson, Ferrari Mitchells, Porsche Stone, and Aiden Mertz, who was there for a special occasion, were the casualties on the Cows’ side of things. And most people, once the funerals came and went, almost seemed to forget.
Tweek hadn’t.
The bus crash, well, that had killed Karen McCormick, four old people, the bus driver, two Middle Park kids, three of the Harrisons, Doug O’Connel, Billy Harris, Floyd Larson, Kyle Broflovski, Stan Marsh, Eric Cartman, and Butters Stotch. Karen had been going to the mall with Firkle, and had been the first to die, he’d watched the stop sign fly through the bus window. Somehow, it just barely missed him.
The car accident had been the real kick in the pants.
Larry, Annie, and Georgi were taking Firkle to the first of many doctor’s appointments. The goth had been curled silently against the door, hand wrapped around the handle. He’d had his headphones over his ears, ignoring whatever positive, uplifting bullshit that Larry and Annie were spewing at him. The only thing he registered was Georgi’s hand on his knee, giving him a gentle squeeze. He remembered looking at them, about to remove his headphones, when the car suddenly lurched.
He woke up in the hospital three weeks later to not just one piece of bad news, but three.
One, Georgi had died on the way to the hospital. Two, his parents had forfeit their custody of him to the state. And three, while he’d been out, apparently Mike had sought out to foster him. Something, something, Larry and Annie died, too, something, sad face.
Firkle was numb from the second he heard about Georgi. Emotions had never been something he’d been good at handling, and apparently his best option was a dull stare and temporary muteness. He realized blankly that it looked like Mike had been talking to him, but he hadn’t been focused on him at all. He didn’t even hear his voice. The idiot’s lips were moving, and he was sure there was volume on, but he couldn’t hear anything.
It sounded similar, he figured, to whatever sound was made in movies when a bomb or something went off. Just... Ringing. But not the kind that came with dizziness... Not the usual kind.
A wisp of something outside the door suddenly took his attention, he blinked. Sitting up silently, he tugged the IV out of his arm and ripped the thin blanket over his waist. Wrapping his arm tightly, he didn’t care when he removed all the bits and baubles attaching him to life support.
In his defense, only Mike was in the room, in that chair across from the bed, when he finally left it. Mike Makowski wouldn’t have been able to stand in the way of Firkle Smith if his life depended on it. The heart monitor shrieked behind him as he left the room, not caring to secure his hospital gown.
Either Mike was sputtering at his bare ass or calling the nurses, and it didn’t matter.
How the Hell had a scrawny, sickly little monstrosity like Firkle survived not one, but three horrible, fatal ‘freak accidents’? Nobody could figure it out. In the crash, somehow, his apparent inability to fasten a seatbelt and habit of clinging to the door had somehow saved him. Everyone else in their car, and Hal, Daniella, Sarah, and Dylan, had all died. Everyone wearing seatbelts and sitting like normal people.
Apparently, the only other person that made it out was that fucking guy.
And this wasn’t the first time Firkle had seen him, either. No, he’d seen that man at every single event. On the bus, he sat across from him and Karen. At the football game, he’d taken a seat on the lowest of the bleachers right before the sinkhole started.
When Firkle had turned to look at Georgi, the last thing he saw over their shoulder was that fucker.
Bare feet made nary a sound as he skirted beneath the Nurse’s Station, following the man until he got into an elevator. The first thing to leave his mouth since he’d woken up, and it was something he’d never imagined he would say.
“Hold the door.”
