Delos - the Greek Island where you are not allowed to stay overnight.
Tumblr media
I want to talk about one of my favourite Greek islands, Delos. Located just a few kilometres southwest of Mykonos, Delos is a small island that packs a big punch.
However, no one is allowed to stay overnight on Delos as it's an archaeological site and a protected area. Visitors are only allowed to stay on the island during the day and have to leave before the last ferry departs. This is to preserve the island's fragile ecosystem and protect the archaeological sites from damage or vandalism.
Getting to Delos is easy - just hop on a ferry from Mykonos, and you'll be there in no time. The island is only 3 km long and 1.5 km wide, so it's perfect for exploring on foot. Delos is famous for its ancient Greek ruins, which are a UNESCO World Heritage site. The island was once the centre of the Cyclades, and it's said that the god Apollo was born there.
So, what can you do on the island? First up, you have to visit the ancient ruins. The archaeological site is extensive, and you can easily spend hours wandering around and exploring. Be sure to check out the Terrace of the Lions, one of the island's most famous landmarks.
Next, head to the beach. Because the island is small, there are few, and they tend to be rocky, but they are worth visiting.
Finally, take a stroll around the island. Delos is small enough to easily walk around in a few hours. Along the way, you'll see beautiful views of the sea and the surrounding islands.

The Island of Delos: A Lesson in Greek Mythology
As the cruise ship arrived in Mykonos, I learned that I could board a ferry to Delos, the island of the gods.  I immediately approached the kiosk to pick up my ticket since I had not made previous arrangements and tickets sell out fast.  In only a couple of hours I would be departing on the MV Delos Express and exploring the uninhabited island considered the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. As…

This bronze head, found on the island of Delos in 1912, represents one of the most extraordinary masterpieces of #Hellenistic art that has survived to this day.
It dates back to the 1st or 2nd century BC. and is known among Anglo-Saxon scholars as the "Worried Man of Delos" due to the incredible expressiveness of his features.
It is currently preserved in the Archaeological Museum of #Athens.

Heres another intresting snippet that may be good for some Apollo followers!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll leave the full explanation for those who wish to read the book (The Oracles Of Apollo)
The birth
Leto, Apollos mother. couldn't give birth anywhere on Mother Earth (due to Heras' anger with her for Zeus was the father), so she went to Delos for it was a floating island not connected by earth.
(Notes! Artemis was born first on the sixth day after the new moon! And so it is sacred to her. She also helped deliver her younger twin, Apollo, which is why women in labor may call on her)
(Notes! Swans are also sacred to Apollo! Who was born at dawn on the seventh day on the seventh month, Delphinios [the first month after winter solstice] )
Hymn to Apollo

Apollo’s version of the hunters
Please note that I am no writer and have never tried expressing an au in words like this before. It might suck a little.
Apollo has a temple for young boys on Delos. They swear themselves to Apollo (like Artemis’s hunters do for her), pray for him, sacrifice food for him. They are basically his modern priests. Inside of their lord’s temple do art, music, medecine etc. all in Apollo’s name. They also take care of Apollo’s holy cows which he has moved to Delos since ancient Greece. In exchange for what they do for him Apollo gives them immortality (like the hunters), makes them stronger and more apt at the things in his domain (they are great healers, musicians , etc.). He loves them (platonically) and acts as something between their dad and their patron god (like how he acts with Rachel). While they don’t advise him, he does care for their pinion as humans both very old and very young. They are kept a secret for their protection. Only a few other people know about this place: the Olympians, other more minor gods who’s sons have joined and Rachel (because she is his oracle and they are in similar situations). Apollo’s priests are mostly abused children, either demigods who prayed to him before or after joining camp or (clearsighted) mortals who prayed as a “joke” or in desperation for anything to save them. Most if not all didn’t think it was going to work since they either didn’t believe in the gods or didn’t believe in their goodness, but he saved them anyways. There are some demigods that weren’t aware of their parentage, but felt drawn towards greek/roman mythology and there are others that knew but never made it to camp or left camp because they didn’t like how violent it was. There is a five year old child that had just heard stories of greek myths from a book that said gods protect mortals (He heard mellowed out versions for children lol) which caused him to pray to Apollo, his favorite god (He’s shiny) when his mother hit him again. Apollo then took him away and got him to join his priests. Because they have been hurt so much and most aren’t fighters, the temple has a magical barrier that keeps them hidden from mortal eyes and masks their smell from monsters. (Other option is doing a thing about how sirens are part of his domain because of the singing and are therefore protecting the island). If they ask to leave that life they are allowed but they will lose their immortality and other added skills (If they learned to play the guitar they won’t suddenly lose that, but their playing won’t be able to magically affect people’s emotions anymore). After TOA Apollo reveals the temple to the other gods and demigods. It then becomes a resting spot for demigods and a sort of hospital. The island moves around (like in the myths) and can sometimes be found by heroes in need.

I was reading about Apollo's lovers and why is no one here talking about Rhoeo/Rhoio?
Like come on
Tumblr media
"I'm so sorry your dad is so terrible, honey. Wanna live on my sacred Island instead?"
Tumblr media
And he saved her sisters too???? And turned them into goddesses????
Tumblr media
And he was rising their son himself???
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And apparently Apollo had no problem with Rhoeo marrying his apprentice??? And Zarex adopted Anius??? And they had 2 more childern??? (I saw the 2 extra children only being mentioned on Wikipedia tho, so if anyone have other source talking about them please share with me 🙏🏻)
Also, Zarex was grandson of Chiron and Chariclo who is said to be Apollo's daughter (in some versions of the myth at least) which makes Apollo Zarex's great grandfather.
Tumblr media
And Anius later become the king of Delos (you know the same island where Apollo WAS BORN) and also his father's priest 🥺🥺🥺
Why is no one talking about this??? Look I love Hyacinthus, Cyrene and Admetus, but we're sleeping on some good stories.
Anyway, Rhoeo is now on my top 5 Apollo's lovers list. Slay queen
Edit: I drew them -> Rhoeo, Anius Zarex

"Diana is a goddess in Roman and Hellenistic religion, primarily considered a patroness of the countryside and nature, hunters, wildlife, childbirth, crossroads, the night, and the Moon. She is equated with the Greek goddess Artemis, and absorbed much of Artemis' mythology early in Roman history, including a birth on the island of Delos to parents Jupiter and Latona, and a twin brother, Apollo, though she had an independent origin in Italy."
