24 DAYS OF HORROR-MAS ( 23 / 24 )
Uh, so let's start with the basics. A stake through the heart. Will that kill you? I imagine a stake to the heart would kill pretty much anything. Red Snow (2021) dir. Sean Nichols Lynch

RED SNOW - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: 4Digital Media
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS:  Olivia is an inspiring writer, her genre is romantic vampire tales. A few nights before Christmas a thump on her porch is an injured bat. Taking it in, the bat transforms into the handsome vampire, Luke. Olivia decides to hide him in her garage to protect him after she encounters Julius King, a vampire hunter. Infatuated with the creature, she feeds him animal blood in an attempt to nurse him back to health. Any chance of romance is soon thwarted when a gang of fellow bloodsuckers invade her home in search of their missing friend.
REVIEW: Sean Nichols Lynch’s second feature film is a lighthearted dark comedy set against the snowy backdrop of Lake Tahoe a few days before Christmas. It almost feels like filmmaker Joe Dante was asked to make a holiday horror themed romantic comedy for the Hallmark Channel.
Lynch weaves in all the elements need to setup his main character, Olivia. She is somewhat sympathetic but when the vampire shows up on her doorstep, literally, she begins to show a bit of an edge. Living alone, Luke, the vampire, does present a ray of companionship into her life. Lynch writes some lighthearted moments that the comedy organically flows from. The vampire hunter is a tad stiff, but the organization he works for offers a bit more comic relief. When Luke’s fanged friends show up it adds a bit of peril to the narrative and offers Olivia an opportunity to find her center and take on these fanged fiends. Lynch tells a nicely paced tale that offers some fun moments, but he clearly is a better at comedy comedy and satire.
The film offers a nice location, satisfying costumes, okay special effects, and a serviceable score. The film has a nice pace, good editing, nice framing and satisfactory cinematography. I especially like the night sequences. Again, there was a tone and texture to these elements that felt like a low budget Hallmark movie.
The two central actors, Dennice Cisneros and Nico Bellamy work nicely together. I enjoyed their banter and sustained my interest in the film. They establish this level of comfort and familiarity between the characters that Luke never felt like a treat. Actors Laura Kennon and Alan Silva play Luke’s vampire friends and serve as the menace and threat to Olivia. I enjoyed Laura Kennon’s performance as she nicely combined this sense of threat and sexuality that a vampire should present. Likewise, she added that extra touch of “The Lost Boys,” never growing up and partying all night long. It was nice to see veteran actor Vernon Wells. Would have liked to see him with a little more screen time, and many of the elements that make his character endearing come about after his demise.
RED SNOW feels like a homegrown low budget hybrid genre movie. It’s not bad, and at times a bit kitschy, but the performances are solid and the writing is good and the direction solid that makes for an overall fun view. I think the holiday element adds a nice touch and diversion to the genre aspect of the narrative. Director/screenwriter Sean Nichols Lynch is a talented filmmaker and has some nice filmmaking props. If he had a writing partner to work out the jokes and tone I feel his films could have a bit more pop. Also, if he had a slightly better script I’d like to see what he could do with a larger budget. RED SNOW left me curious to see what Lynch serves up next.
