Hi thea, so I'm doing the medium deep dive on operation friendship tonight... there are several things driving me insane: it was directed by Rena Down and is her ONLY directing credit?how??; dennis koeing--obviously all over later seasons but...writes this, bottoms up (helen), the joker is WiLd, trick or treatment (w superman+clown)???!!!; the dirty book klinger makes charles read "I, the jury"... have you read a summary bc i'm REALLY SPIRALING (sry if this has been discussed/I just missed it)

Omg yeah I knew of Dennis Koenig’s crimes for sure but had not clocked the ep was directed by a woman...the one time director credit for her is criminal. And I had not googled that book ....uhhhhh I’d usually be like this is crazy coincidence but in an episode where two people are injured doing something for their comrade in arms (Klinger literally injured saving Charles, BJ more casually in the room to get Hawkeye’s files when it happens) it just has to be that they were browsing era-appropriate books for Klinger to have and thought it’d be fun to have a little inside joke they enjoyed for themselves that the novel is about a veteran vowing to avenge the murder of his WWII friend who lost an arm saving his life. Cool and fun and normal facts. Thanks for that added pinch of crazy.

Werewolf Island (2020)

Don’t confuse Werewolf Island a.k.a. The Legend of Dog Lady Island for a movie. It may have a plot, characters, and does “move” but this is jazzed-up padding. It’s little more than an easily solvable mystery stretched to 86 minutes with pointless, repetitive flashbacks. Only a streaming service desperate to pad out its library would carry it, which explains why it finished shooting in 2017 and is only available now.

When Lilly (Kara Joy Reed) is attacked by a dog-woman while in the woods with her boyfriend, Ben (Dennis Marin) asks his uncle Mike (Michael J. Alexander) to investigate. The Detective learns Dog Lady Island has seen numerous tragedies over the years. Photos of an incident in the 1970s tie him - or one of his ancestors that looks just like him - to the entity responsible.

Written, directed, produced, and starring Michael J. Alexander, “Werewolf Island” (which is a misnomer; there aren’t any werewolves here) is a checklist of everything a filmmaker can do wrong. The unconvincing cast had to be selected out of a shallow pool. Only this would explain the attempt to pass Calhoun Koenig as the daughter of an Ojibwe chief. Well, I say Ojibwe but really, T.J. Storm just plays a generic Native American (complete with big headdress) to be gunned down by some of the least-convincing French accents I’ve ever heard. The dog ladies are often walking around in broad daylight, which highlights the laughable makeup effects. You’ve seen more frightening creatures trick-or-treating - and more convincing too.

The dialogue is clunky but appears to have been easy to memorize - if anyone was reading their lines off-screen, I couldn’t tell. The characters are dull. The camera work amateurish and production cheap. Day changes to night and back again multiple times within a conversation to compensate for the performers who couldn't make it to the shoot at the right times.

All of these issues make Werewolf Island fun to ridicule for a few minutes but boredom soon follows. Once Detective Mike gets on the case, he interviews and sifts through archives who repeat the same story over and over. A long time ago, a bunch of people were murdered. One of the female victims comes back as a dog lady and wreaks revenge. It isn’t complicated but Michael J. Alexander screws it up anyway. The same actors are re-used in multiple roles, meaning they reincarnate. So what does it matter if the dog lady kills someone? They’ll just come back in a few years. Don't try and do both this version of the story and the “my ancestors did something and I have to atone for their sins” thing. When you do, you leave people with more questions than answers after this never-scare-fest.

I went in expecting Werewolf Island to be bad but still wanted to be entertained one way or another. I wasn’t. The only consolation I have considering the time I wasted is that the picture's so obscure no one who reads this will ever see it. (November 11, 2020)
