NAVIGATING PROJECT MANAGEMENT IN THE AEC INDUSTRY
Navigating Project Management in the AEC industry involves a series of interconnected tasks that require effective planning, execution, monitoring, and control. By following best practices and leveraging project management methodologies such as APM, SCRUM, KANBAN, or the Traditional WATERFALL Project Management Methodology, the AEC professionals can successfully deliver complex projects while meeting stakeholder expectations and achieving project objectives.
As an architectural manager with a Master of Architecture degree and an architectural engineering degree from reputable institutes, having experience in project and design management for large-scale commercial facilities, multi-story offices, and high-rise administration buildings, I can provide the necessary artifacts to enhance project success, improve team collaboration, and effectively handle project complexities in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) sector.
1. Set Clear Goals and Objectives:
Define project scope, including deliverables and constraints.
Establish SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals.
Align goals with stakeholder expectations and project requirements.
Obtain buy-in from key stakeholders on project objectives.
2. Develop a Comprehensive Project Plan:
Create a detailed work breakdown structure (WBS) to organize project tasks.
Define project milestones and dependencies.
Develop a project schedule with timelines and resource allocation.
Identify risks and develop a risk management plan.
Establish a budget and financial plan for the project.
3. Foster Effective Communication:
Establish communication channels and protocols for project team members.
Hold regular project meetings to discuss progress, issues, and updates.
Use clear and concise language in all communications.
Encourage open and transparent communication among team members.
Address communication barriers and conflicts promptly.
4. Embrace Technology and Communication:
Utilize project management software for task tracking and collaboration.
Implement communication tools such as emails, instant messaging, and video conferencing.
Leverage cloud-based platforms for document sharing and version control.
Provide training and support for team members on project management tools.
Stay updated on new technologies and tools to improve project efficiency.
5. Manage Change Effectively:
Establish a change control process to evaluate and approve changes to project scope.
Communicate changes to stakeholders and assess their impact on project objectives.
Update project documentation and plans to reflect approved changes.
Monitor changes to prevent scope creep and ensure project alignment with goals.
Evaluate the risks and benefits of proposed changes before implementation.
6. Foster Collaboration and Teamwork:
Encourage team members to share ideas, feedback, and best practices.
Foster a collaborative work environment that values diversity and inclusivity.
Promote team building activities and recognize team achievements.
Facilitate cross-functional collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Resolve conflicts and promote a positive team culture.
7. Continuously Monitor and Evaluate Progress:
Track project performance against key performance indicators (KPIs).
Conduct regular project reviews to assess progress and identify areas for improvement.
Monitor project risks and issues and take corrective actions as needed.
Evaluate project outcomes against initial goals and objectives.
Use lessons learned to make informed decisions and optimize project performance.
By focusing on these subtasks within each point, project managers can enhance project success, improve team collaboration, and effectively manage project complexities in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry.

Lessons in Design Leadership
These past few months have been quite the whirlwind- I've been through a rollercoaster of change, challenges, and unexpected encounters that have left me with some precious life lessons. This summer I waved goodbye to my 3-year role as a design strategist at Code3 due to team cuts. The layoff hit me like a curveball – uncertainty and a lot of doubts about what’s to come for me in my career.
In the midst of all that chaos, an exciting door opened – an interview opportunity at IDEO, which is a company I’ve always looked up to and admired. I made it to the 3rd round interview at this dream company, but ultimately wasn’t chosen for the role. Although it wasn’t the right time for me to embark on a journey with IDEO, the interview process was a crash course in how to display excellent design leadership skills.
IDEO's take on design leadership goes way beyond the design industry. Through products and services like IDEO U, they share the magic of design thinking with those outside of the design world who are looking for effective problem solving methods. It's about using empathy-driven design strategy to make the world a better place.
Not only do they prioritize empathy in their products, but they also do so in their recruiting tactics. During the interview process, I was struck by the genuine display of human-centered thinking and empathy at every step. The team's approach was a testament to their commitment to design leadership that truly places people at the core. Right from the start, the communication wasn't just transactional; it was a dialogue, a conversation that echoed the essence of human connection. They were not just professional but caring.
This experience illuminated the fact that design leadership isn't confined to a set process; it's an embodiment of human-centered values that infuse empathy and understanding into every interaction. It's about recognizing that every candidate, direct report, or colleague has unique stories, needs, and dreams just like the end-user.
While going through the interview process, I completed an assignment which can be viewed at the link below. I am super proud of the work that I did and I thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with the IDEO team to understand their needs and pain points. Overall, it was a learning experience I will always cherish.
So far this summer, the layoff has pushed me to explore new horizons, and although I have not found a new job yet, the IDEO interview gave me a lesson in expansive thinking. So here's to embracing change, finding nuggets of wisdom in unexpected places, and redefining what design leadership means to me.
Yours creatively, HM

Change Management
About a month ago, I explained here that my part of The Boeing Company is being sold. A lot of people have asked how I feel about it. It’s a mixed bag of emotions.
On one side, it’s an exciting opportunity. It’s difficult to function as a software development organization inside of a massive manufacturing organization. There is so much bureaucracy, policy, and practice focused on the safety and security necessary for building airplanes. Getting out from under that is appealing. I’m hopeful that it is going to be easier for us to do user research—easier to speak to our users. I’m expecting we’ll have less restrictions on the software we are able to use to do our work.
On the other side, there are a lot of people that I’ve developed long and meaningful relationships with. There are people I’ve worked with almost 25 years. There are people I’ve hired and managed. Slowly, but surely, I’m being disconnected from them. There are also a lot of benefits to being part of a company like Boeing, and I don’t know yet what benefits I’ll have with the new company.
I’m naturally an optimist. I’m trending optimistic about the situation I’m in, but there are days that I just feel tired. Change management is hard work, and I’ve been deeply engaged in it going on nine months now. There’s no end in sight.

january month of yuugi
#yugioh#ygo dm#yugi mutou#idk what was in the water on 2025 opening but it really got me thinking hm. I will finally draw yuugi#ygo has been in my dna for like close to a decade at this point and yet. I have never attempted to draw anything for it#until now. my audacity has finally reached quota#wishshipping saved my ass this lunar new year and its not even an exaggeration. thank you kazuki takahashi for the boys. rest in peace#mutou yuugi I love u.... u r my son#not mentioned in this stack but dsod's decision to thin yuugi's choker is the funniest shittiest character design decision on earth#like as a detail its so nothing. when u zoom out it just looks like a shadow dropped wrong somewhere. I have come to terms with#the other fashion choice for him in that movie but the tiny ass choker I don't accept. that's stupid. big it#I rly like the vision of older yuugi being like. obnoxiously polite and cheerful#specifically in a way that's not like ceding space for everyone else. like it's clear at all time that he's Like That#and nobody will be able to stop him from being Like That#and also tbh I can never imagine him leaving domino for long (<- definitely not projecting my city slicker ass on him)#I think the game shop's been where he's safe to be himself for so long that he'd want to keep it running and extend#that shade to other kids in the city too. his loyal customers are so scared of disappointing him for no reason#.... typed huge wall of text abt jou leaving domino for tournaments etc frequently but always coming back to hang out with yuugi#I am actually ill abt them huh.... maybe ygo was the progenitor honestly maybe it started me on the two blokes who do fuckall ships#yuugi is so cute but I do know in my heart tho he does Not cook. that kid has never learned and will never manage#I know he doesnt even have water in his office whenever he works. scared of spilling#its a good thing hes got friends galore now people are blowing his phone up wasting their sms toll telling him to drink water#(slowly tipping into mania) I just think he's so neat. love that boy he's so cute

Antinous sketches
I will redesign him a bit for Wisdom saga because his old design looked too much like Kaeya from genshin impact. Still keeping the eyepatch though, that's my favorite part of his design.
For his design I was mostly aiming for this intimidating, vain, kind of brute hunter aesthetic. I'm not really used to drawing manly men so he'll be quite the challenge to animate.

NBIMS-US™ Standard: Information Delivery Manual (IDM)
The IDM acts as a comprehensive guide detailing the data exchanges, information deliverables, and workflows needed to facilitate successful BIM implementation and collaboration throughout the project lifecycle. It is a crucial part of the NBIMS-US™ standard, specifying the information requirements for various phases of a building project. The IDM outlines the necessary data exchanges, deliverables, and information workflows to support BIM implementation and collaboration, playing a vital role in defining information requirements, data exchange protocols, roles, responsibilities, and processes for effective BIM implementation in construction projects.

State of the UX Job Market
There’s been a lot of really good commentary on the current state of the UX job market. Two years ago, I posted about my experience as a hiring manager.
In January, Jared Spool presented a comprehensive explanation.
Just a week ago, Jon Kolko offered his advice based on his own job hunt.
And only a couple days ago, Uday Gajendar provided his perspective.
It’s dangerous to go alone! Take this.
