Digimon Secret Santa Exchange 2023: Don't blame me (you started it)
Kuga Yuuya never texted her first. Until he did.
Written for @hallowed-nebulae for the @digisecretsanta 2023 exchange! :3
a/n: i'm your secret santa and (like i said on ao3 lol) i'm not entirely familiar with the digimon world series, or i wasn't until recently, so i hope i did your two favorites, Rina & Yuuya, justice!! i've enjoyed the gameplay so far of Re:digitize Decode and i enjoyed writing these two. i hope you have a safe and merry Christmas, and happy holidays!! <333 :D
Oh, and here's my Digimon discord server if you wanna yell abt digimon with us!
Read on AO3! || Read below the cut:
Kuga Yuuya did not texted her first.
It wasn’t something subjective—it was a simple, known fact! She wasn’t sure Yuuya texted anyone first. Often, when Rina texted him, Yuuya left her (very cruelly) on read. Sometimes he left her on delivered. Which was like, extremely rude, thank you very much.
(Granted, none of those messages were because of actual emergencies, but still. Her memes were nonetheless very important and warranted a response. But Yuuya had ignored her. Because of course he did. The jerk.)
So, naturally, when Rina’s phone vibrated and pinged, and Yuuya’s contact lit up her screen, Rina gaped. She blinked, surprised, and it took several moments to register that oh yeah, she should read the message.
Hey, Yuuya had written plainly. Jeesh, and he called everyone else boring.
Yeah, the world had totally ended. Sometime in the last few minutes, the world had ended and Rina had died and gone to an afterlife where apparently Kuga Yuuya texted her first.
She debated on calling him to see what was up, but that ran the risk of scaring him off because he didn’t even text, let alone call; so Rina leaned back in her chair and did what she did best.
Rina: hey!!!! ┌( ^◡^ )┘whatcha up to???
Yuuya: Studying. You use a lot of exclamation points, Rina-san.
Rina: and u text like the heir of the gigo company lol
Yuuya: Is… that a good or a bad thing?
Rina blinked again, her lips curving into a frown. She narrowed her eyes at her screen suspiciously, and who could blame her? Since when did Yuuya care about her opinion of him?
Rina: not bad!!! was just kiddin lol (≧_≦)
Yuuya: Okay.
She sent him another text that mostly consisted of emotes and exclamation points (perhaps proving his point), and this time, it took a while for Yuuya to respond. At least a good ten minutes.
Yuuya: What about you? What’re you up to?
Okay. Wow. She peeked out her bedroom window—yep, still snowing. Which meant it was still mid-December and she was still in Japan. Maybe. Probably. If she wasn’t… did it snow in the afterlife? To what afterlife had she been sent, for Yuuya to not only respond but ask about her in return? Smug, snooty Yuuya? What the hell was even happening? She couldn’t even begin to know the answer to that.
Instead, she answered Yuuya.
Rina: just chillin!!! not really doing much haha it’s boring w/o V.V. here tbh
Yuuya: I see.
Another pause followed. Rina stood from her chair and made her way to her bed to sprawl out, phone in hand, as she awaited the continuation of their conversation. She got bored waiting on minute three and decided she couldn’t handle the suspense anymore.
Rina: so whats up???
Yuuya: I’m studying.
Rina: well duh u said that already i meant why did u text me
Yuuya: You text me all the time.
Rina: yeah! but u like never answer soooooo
Yuuya: Sorry.
Oh good god, okay. Yuuya, apologizing? Prideful, arrogant Yuuya? Maybe she’d gone to some alternate dimension—somewhere that wasn’t the digital world—where everything was the same except for one fifteen-year-old Kuga Yuuya.
She frowned again, this time in contemplation. As she pondered how to respond, she kicked her feet idly against her bed, tapping the back of her phone case if only to keep her fingers moving.
She wondered absentmindedly if his dad scolded him or something. From what she knew, Kuga Kenzou was more insufferable than Yuuya—which, of course, made sense considering he was Yuuya’s father—so it wasn’t much of a stretch to say he wasn’t all that great of a parent.
Her chest ached inexplicably at the thought and her frown deepened.
Rina: is ur dad being a bitch
Yuuya: Huh?
Rina: ya know ur dad is he being a bitch lol
Yuuya: I don’t see what he has to do with the conversation.
Then, after about a minute:
Yuuya: Father is always being a bitch.
Rina: lol!! i believe it honestly
And because Rina was a gremlin with no sense of self-control:
Rina: his ass must really hurt from the stick shoved in it
Yuuya: Lol.
Rina blinked once more in surprise and then grinned at her screen because this was another new thing—Yuuya laughing at a joke? A joke she made? She didn’t even know Yuuya could laugh, much less over text. She didn’t know he even had a sense of humor.
They spent the next hour or so texting, with Rina sending memes (the normal amount) and emotes (also the normal amount) and Yuuya telling her that it was, in fact, not the normal amount. Eventually, the time between Yuuya’s responses grew longer and longer, and Rina assumed that he’d averted his full attention back to studying.
Rina: ur a fun texter lol
Rina: not as fun as me obviously but still fun just sayin
She sent it without really expecting a response right away, but she was surprised yet again when the reply came in only a few minutes.
Yuuya: Wow. One person approves of my texting habits.
Rina laughed out loud. This was a fun side of Yuuya to see.
(And no, it wasn’t because she felt a little warm inside that he seemed to trust her enough to make jokes with her.)
(She didn’t feel warm inside at all.)
(Yuuya was simply growing on her.)
(Like a fungus.)
Yuuya: Is this supposed to be an honor or a shame, since the person is Rina-san?
Her laugh quickly turned into a scandalized gasp as she stared down at her phone in offense. No, she changed her mind. Yuuya wasn’t growing on her.
“Rude,” she said aloud as if he could hear her, without any hint of fondness in her voice. None at all. "Yer such a punk."
Oh, who was she kidding—she sent him memes, shitposts, and festive, holiday-themed selfies every day after that for the rest of the month. If he was pissed about it, well, he texted her first.

Does Patamon from Digimon have a Ryu number?
Patamon the species cannot have a Ryu Number.
Tumblr media
T.K.'s Patamon, however, has a Ryu Number of 3 2.
(CORRECTION: Per @frozen-kappa, Takeru and his Patamon appear in Digimon World Re:Digitize Decode, giving him a Ryu Number of 2.)

I am gonna miss Habu
Tumblr media
I realized that Time Stranger will be the last Digimon Game, that Habu worked on. Technically he already left that project, though I hope there will still be enough of his vision in that game. Because oh boy, Habu sure did revolutionize Digimon games.
A couple of weeks back I had a talk with someone, who loved Digimon as a kid and teen, but kinda had fallen out of the fandom after that. And they went: "Yeah, I mean, Digimon had always had those great anime, but Pokémon always beat them out in terms of game, didn't they?" And I was like: "Oh, that was before Habu came around."
I mean, I don't want to start a Pokémon vs Digimon debate, but I generally felt that the last two generations of Pokémon really were not as fun as those before. Purple and Scarlet were alright, but man, I loathed Sword and Shield. Meanwhile Digimon during those last 15 years put out banger after banger.
Admittedly, sure. A lot of folks kinda missed out on Digimon Story: Lost Evolution, as it never came out in the west. And technically Habu was only assistent producer on that one. But it already shared one important thing with the games producers under Habu: Clear characters, who were defined as who they were. A lot more story. Especially a story with some twists and turns.
Tumblr media
(I also found that there is apparently by now an English fan translation of Lost Evolution. I guess I am going to try that out at some point, eh?)
Same kinda goes with the Re:Digitize games. Those did never see a release in the west. Though they even clearer show of course the stuff that should become Habu's hallmarks. Most notably the quite sexy Yasuda Suzuhito character design. And while I am usually quite critical of the sexualization of female characters... You know what? These characters are still really well written, so who cares if they are sexy? I am fine with sexy characters.
And Re:Digitize really was a good game. A fun game. It is a pity, that it never got released in English - and that the manga also got kinda cancelled and never finished. :( Because I never had a modded 3DS I never got to play the Decode version of the game, which still makes me kinda sad. (Why the hell was the 3DS region locked? Literally the only Nintendo console to ever do this. It is so lame.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then of course he was also the helm of Cyber Sleuth and Hacker's Memory. I cannot impart on you how big of a hit Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth has been. Digimon is not a big selling video game franchise. This is a franchise that historically celebrated if they managed to sell more than 150 000 units of a game. And Cyber Sleuth? Cyber Sleuth sold ten times that much. 1.5 million units. Yes, sure, compared with western AAA games, this would be seen as not enough to break even. But Digimon is not a AAA franchise, and usually is not anywhere near as expensive in terms of the game budget. We do not know exaclty how high the budget for Cyber Sleuth was, but it was probably not that much, given that they recycled the Digimon models from other games and kept the backgrounds fairly limited.
There is also the very notable paradime shift in both of the Cyber Sleuth games, in that they very clearly were pandering to an older audience. These were first Digimon Games to not get a child-friendly raiting (instead ending with a teen rating). But yeah, again: I cannot stretch enough, how darn successful those two games were.
Tumblr media
Same went with the following game. Digimon World Next Order. This kinda was in the same vein as Re:Digitize once more. Meaning: Basically a somewhat direct sequel to the original Digimon World game. (I will openly admit though, that I never finished this - based on getting stuck in the Japanese version, and so far never buying the english language version.) And this game, too, sold pretty darn well due to the international release. Not Cyber Sleuth well, but still: More than a million copies shipped. That is pretty darn good in terms of Digimon Games.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, Survive was not quite as big - but it was still a lot bigger than pretty much any Digimon game before Cyber Sleuth. And be it just because it got directly an international release. As someone who has been in this fandom since 2000, I really cannot explain how darn magical it has felt to get the game on the same day as the Japanese people. I played most of the Digimon games in the Japanese versions. Heck, Cyber Sleuth I preordered from Japan when it came out. (Might I note, that that game came out for the Playstation Vita? A console that was basically a still birth?!) And then Survive really just got this international release all at once.
And while it never sold quite as much as Cyber Sleuth it also did not sell badly. (In December 2022 they announced they had sold 500k - so maybe by now we have reached 600k copies.) And that for a game that was completely different from pretty much any other Digimon Game before and after.
Tumblr media
I am not sure why Habu dropped out of the producer position since. Like, as it his decision, or was it a Bandai decision? Looking at game development right now, I would not be surprised if the logic behind it was something like: "OMG, a Digimon Game made money! Now all Digimon games will make a lot of money!" ... ... ... "This game did not make as much money! Habu, you are at fault!"
But given how long Time Stranger has been in development, there could also have been some development struggles that lead to Habu dropping out of the project. I am not sure. I would love to know though. :/
But yeah, man. Habu really... made Digimon games from something that was very unreliable in terms of quality into a really fun game series. And I hope that whoever takes over after him, will create other good Digimon games. Please?!

What's you're favorite digimon world game?
Digimon World: RE:Digitize Decode.
I think it acts as a proper successor to the original Digimon World and is a lot more fun and immersive than Next 0rder.
Like, comparatively, I have 300+ hours in Decode, compared to beating Next 0rder in less than 24 hours, and never playing it again.
The other reason why Decode is my favorite, is because I had a proper adventure or what I liked to call a "V-Tamer Experience", and though the experience is solely my own, I can say that I met my Digimon Partner through that game.
While I know it's popular to use guides and such for Digimon World Games, in my opinion, the best experience you can possibly have with them is when you play them blind, and figure things out on your own.
Of course, no one likes the idea that they might be bad at raising Digimon, or that they might not raise what they want-- but I think the most important take away from raising a Digimon in this manner is that your Digimon is a reflection of your care towards them.
Should it really matter, if the Digimon you raise isn't the one you were going for? Are you the kind of person who would treat a Digimon different, just because it didn't turn into something you liked? Would you try and redo it over and over to get something different? Would you delete them or throw them away, because they didn't become what you wanted?
I had this realization during my playthrough of Decode, when I got a Digimon that I disliked. I didn't have it in me to treat them differently, because what they became wasn't their fault-- and when they evolved into a Digimon I hated, I horrified myself when I briefly entertained the thought of just waiting for them to die so I could try again, without letting them ever accomplishing anything.
I don't know about you, but that was the moment I realized that I didn't deserve a Digimon-- so I had to be better, to be the partner that my Digimon deserved. When it was all over, that's when I made the second realization that that my partner was what I needed, and not what I thought I wanted or what I thought suited me best.
And now, in the end, 11 years later, because of that, Magnamon is still the one I love the most.
So yeah. Decode changed my perspective on Digimon entirely, lmfao.
That's more than a reason of why it's my favorite, right?

So I finished Digimon World Re:Digitize! The PsP one I dont have a PC that can work with 3DS stuff.
And I reaaaaalllyyyy enjoyed it. It really felt like I was exploring File Island and meeting actual digimon with their lives and everything! And the way you work your way up to having the town be as full of digimon as possible and the quality of stuff there increased? Amazing stuff, felt really rewarding!
It has some issues but its not really fair to complain because Decode fixed tons of this stuff, so in the end I had (sadly) to play the inferior version.
And Vitium? Really cool!!!! I loved everything about them, and the final talk with them was extremely cool. This specific dialogue catched my attention and is one of my favourites in the franchise
Tumblr media
I feel you Vitium.
I liked this experience, now I want to play Digimon World Next Order, I know it's not as "WOAH SO GOOD" as this one but the quality of life will help me enjoy it a lot

I think a lot about Lucemon from Digimon World Re:digitize: Decoded and Digimon World: Next Order because neither are technically evil, at least not intentionally.
Spoilers, if you haven't checked out the games, I guess?
Decoded Lucemon is pretty much a little kid that got seperated by it's gaurdian and friend angemon and kidnapped by Barbamon (most likely the very same one you confront with Rina in Cyber Sleuth, yep...). Lucemon, along with several other unfortunate digimon, was tortured and experimented by Barabamon and left for dead calling for help in a bolted prison cell until the protagonist breaks it open only to see him succum to his injuries. This results in the child Lucemon's digicore being overcome by malice and turning to Falldown Mode. Barbamon adds insult to injury by continuing to brainwash Lucemon FM to the point where he's become a mindless killing machine. Eventually, it digivolves into Lucemon SM and almost destroys both the digital world and the real world. After it's defeated, Lucemon's (rookie/child level) spirit thanks you for stopping it, says that everything should return to normal on its own, and the spirit returns home. Needless to say, Lucemon's circumstances in De:code is kinda horrifying and Barbamon is the worst.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then there is -Next 0rder-'s Lucemon who is arguably the most chill Lucemon so far (both figuratively and literally, you meet him in an ice dungeon during post-game content). Many, if not all, of the digimon who were initially introduced in Digimon lore and animes as villains are a lot more laid-back and sometimes down right friendly in-game and some don't need to fight you in order for them to become your ally (It's kinda refreshing, really). The Lucemon here is no different, and in-fact takes a very unique interest in the protagonist, first approching you as a rookie to tell you that they've been watching you since the begining of your journey, and then challenging you in FM and later SM, albiet asking the player some philisophical questions over "what defines good and evil" to either test, startle, or just confuse the protag. Once the fighting is done Lucemon confirms that it's not the protagonist's strength that defines them as a force of good but rather the their perserverence and conviction. They also start talking in a more casual tone with you and join the city where you've been recruiting a whole bunch of other digimon to live in. They also help you out in a DLC quest with Beezlebumon, which is pretty neat!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Can't rememer if this is correct but I believe Next 0rder Lucemon also keeps track of your in-game movements. From wins and loses, money earned, traversed areas?, etc.

Biyomon BT11-007 by Takase from BT-11 Booster Dimensional Phase
This card shows Digitorin and Akiho in the Railroad Plains near the entrance to the Luminous Cave from Digimon World Re:Digitize. This is likely a reference to the event, from DW Re:Digitize Decode, of Digitorin asking for the Player's help after Akiho had run off playing with a bunch on Baby Digimon.

okay i can't lie i think i prefer re:digitize decode over next order. like i think next order is a generally better entry point for digimon world games because despite its difficulty spikes it has much more QoL stuff and available guides but re:digitize is like, something i'd actually much rather try to 100% with the more compact maps and tighter gameplay loop and all the cool shit it does with the story and everything. i hope this gets an official international release someday or that if there's a new world game it takes some cues from this one

For the new Digimon game Kazumasa Habu was heavily involved until leaving unfortunatly.
So playing the games he worked on is a good place to start since the new game still has his mark on it.
The Cyber Sleuth games (the complete edition provides both games + DLC) & Survive (the visual novel). Are both available and frequently go on sale. Digimon World Next Order is also in the same cateogry as the other two but he only worked on it for the enchanced port but throwing it in there.
There two Digimon games he worked on that never made it outside of Japan but did recieve english fan translations you could fine online. Digimon Story: Lost Evolution & Digimon World Re:Digitize: Decode.
THANK YOU this is helpful.. i'm guessing theres no super big overarching storyline i have to worry about then? (like there is in kingdom hearts or something). i'll look into playing those games, i'll probably start with cyber sleuth since i'm somewhat familiar with it (as in, i've heard it mentioned a lot and my friend has played it).
and omg i didnt know lost evolution had a fan translation thats awesome!! thats one i've been wanting to play too. and i'll look at the re:digitize one too.. thank you!

2024 Game Clear #17 Digimon World Re:Digitized Decode
Tumblr media
Your Tekken timeline is worthless if it doesn't include this game
Tumblr media
So uh this game was the reason I got a twitter account. I was 13 at the time and really starting to surf the web properly to explore my hobbies, meaning I was able to look up news on my favorite franchise and see what was coming out soon or discover entries that I never knew existed as opposed to before where I just had to stumble upon it in the wild after it's already out.
At some point I came across this trailer and some of the PSP trailers and I just thought the game just looked so damn cool, I was so excited for it and so annoyed that Bandai Namco (Namco Bandai at the time) wouldn't commit to a English Localization that I made a twitter account to harass inquire the the Namco Bandai twitter accounts about a potential English release someday... which never happened sadly but I was amused that Decode added a Twitter-esc feed on the bottom screen for these reason.
Tumblr media
A couple years later, after the fan translation released I imported PSP game (the first game I ever imported) and patched it and had a ball. Even so being able to play the 3DS version that I wanted so bad in English and on actual hardware after so long is kind of surreal.
Though admittedly the larger roster of raiseable Digimon aside (I kind wish the base game launched with a lot of these added Digimon, like its crazy that PSP game didn't have Palmon & Tyrannomon) I don't think a lot of the Decode content is the most high quality, the new X-Antibody & Demon Lord scenario have a lot of cool stuff in them but the Infinity mountain dungeon is kind of a slog and the demon lord quest feels pretty padded. This is for the most part fine though because the base game is still very solid.
Tumblr media
The Digimon World games aren't for everyone but the general flow of these games I find so cozy: raising your Digimon the best you can and see how much of the world you can explore and how many Digimon you can recruit to your city before your partner dies and you have to return to the city. The Digimon you recruit can improve your city which in turn helps you raise your partner better. You definitely need to play with a guide near by though.
I uh also somehow got locked into a evolution that doesn't seem to be documented anywhere: Grappleomon -> Vikemon, I have no idea why Grapple would not evolve into Bancho as I don't think I made a care mistake but discovering a new evolution line is cool i guess
Tumblr media
The fan patch is pretty good, a couple of typos and weird grammar in some but hey Digimon games always had messy localizations so honestly probably better than we would've gotten lol.
