I literally haven't drawn in over a year, but of course exam season is a good time to pick it up again. It's really inspired by @eleeza artwork, and though the veil makes no fucking sense (I didn't like the shape it made when it draped over the horns) I'm ultimately quite happy with it.

The Start

So since I am having a writers block with orphic academy I might as well show you the origin. The very first Orphic academy was supposed to be my first attempt at making a comic but it failed. It was also my first attempt at digital art (which I hate. THERE IS NO FRICTION BETWEEN THE STYLUS AND THE SCREEN.) So here is how it started I suppose.

If I had done this on paper it would have come out so much different but it just looks stupid. I should have gone for a darker background and I can go on about the mistake so I shall leave it here. I swear my art isn't this bad.

Melinoë has only two documentations “canonical” to Greek myth (because lets be real religious canons is never wholly uniform). The first is her Orphic hymn than highlights her backstory and purpose, and the other is an bronze Anatolian tablet for magic. It’s most likely she’s an Orphic aspect of Hecate, but all other Orphic aspects of Hecate are really different from her usual characterization (ie, Angelos and Daeira) that I just count them as separate deities in my stories. Also, because she’s a child of Persephone and Zeus in a religious cult where Hades and Zeus are often syncretic, I went with Hades as her father solely because it makes more sense to me for a nightmare ghost goddess to be the kid of Hades rather than Zeus. Zeus still plays a huge role in her life because that’s why she has whitened parts in her hymn, while hades is the reason for her blackened parts.

anyhow, I like to think of her as being a little… betelgeuse-y, you know? annoying ghost demon thing that should probably stop doing coke. Not that she‘s really doing coke but you know. I like imagining Persephone as incredibly terrifying (but sweet too) even outside of the underworld, and Melinoë is primarily associated with her as her daughter.

I play around with her character a lot because nightmares, insanity, ghosts and illusions are some of my favourite things to use in storytelling (in moderation, of course)
