Dear Alex,
Although I am still within our agreed-upon timeframe of answering within 10 days, a week filled with migraines and the resulting mental fog brought me right to the edge of it. Meanwhile, you have made your way back to Ireland and I am curious to hear everything about your journey that you feel like sharing!
But because this will be my first reply here, I am first faced with the challenge of how to react to a message that’s also a bit of a letter that’s also a blogpost.
In Instagram DMs, I’m quite attached to the “reply” function, which is probably the messenger equivalent of inline responses in emails. I apply it diligently for each fragment of a conversation partner’s message—partly to stay organized, but perhaps also out of people-pleasing tendencies, ever worried about unintentionally overlooking something and making the sender feel unappreciated. Ironically, and somewhat cruelly, this perfectionist approach often backfires. In trying to craft such neat and comprehensive responses, I end up overwhelmed, delaying my reply—or sometimes forgetting to respond entirely.
To curb this overwhelm, I try to have three dedicated 25-minute slots for replying to messages every day. Keeping up with digital communication is one of my biggest struggles in both my personal and professional life, and while this method isn’t perfect, it helps me keep the “unread” pile at bay, ensures that I don’t miss anything urgent and doesn’t take up too much mental space. 25 minutes to tackle as many messages as possible—personal emails, work emails, university notifications, Microsoft Teams updates. A short detour to the outdated digital mall that Facebook has become, before addressing messages on Instagram, WhatsApp, LINE.
Recently, I’ve occasionally encountered a minor dilemma with these messaging apps. As I am focused on my 25-minute challenge, when I hit “send”, a certain sequence of signs might appear: the message is marked as “seen” almost instantly, followed by the dreaded three dancing dots, indicating the recipient is already typing a reply. I myself and most people I know treat DMs like a less formal version of email—we reply a couple of hours or a day or two later. Someone even suggested recently that the polite thing to do is to wait a few minutes before responding, even if you see the notification popping up. But for some of my younger friends, and interestingly, some older ones in the Gen X or Boomer categories, DMs are a real-time chat medium, meant for immediate interaction. The other day, a friend compared my messaging behavior to that disappearing meme. For him, sending a message is a signal of availability and presence. For me, on the other hand, an instant reply feels like slipping a letter through a mailbox slot only to have the front door swing open, and now I find myself being pulled inside for a coffee while I still have 10 more letters to deliver.
I wonder if this different use of and expectations towards the medium is rooted in our different experiences growing up. My younger friends are true digital natives, they have grown up immersed in social media and pop-up notifications, accustomed to the idea of being online and available constantly. (I actually see them moving into hyperdrive with smartwatches now, there is no possible way anymore that a notification could be missed, any delay has been extinguished.) Meanwhile, friends who are older than me were socialized around the spontaneity and unpredictability of landline calls, of people simply calling for a quick or even longer chat. We, on the other hand, had both the landline experience but also grew up with the early internet of messengers and chatrooms that were a conscious commitment - I’d do my homework and then move to the family computer as a treat. It was not ubiquitous and thus not obligatory. But the age of chatrooms is over, at least for me. With screens demanding my attention all day long and having to process information constantly, I find I don’t want my conversations to be relegated to the same digital space. Now a good old landline call actually doesn’t sound half bad.
We do indeed live in a society. In my first entry I wrote about generational differences in expectations around how quickly pictures should be available, and now I'm talking about the varying expectations regarding the speed of replies. It makes me feel like an old man standing on his porch, hands on hips, lamenting the state of the world: "They don’t make ‘em like that anymore."
Shifting from questions of when to reply and back to questions of how to reply.
Your mentioning drafting analog letters in Gmail made me realize that I also do that, in addition to pre-composing digital texts like this one on paper. Basically, for anything that ought to be engaging or somewhat polished in composition and word choice, I always start with a pre-draft. I am really fond of the process of transcribing and editing, while my initial versions are always stream-of-consciousness. If I try to anticipate structure, I falter.
Did you have a pen pal as a child? If so, do you remember how you wrote your letters and approached replying to them? I did have a couple of pen pals and I recall the adults in my life instructing me to always include some questions as it would be inconsiderate to only talk about myself and because it helps to keep the conversation going. I guess for a child such rules might be helpful—it takes time to learn that good conversations don’t always require explicit questions or inline responses; that replies can naturally emerge from things that are plainly told, not asked.
I also remember that I would write these letters in one go, without any draft. Essays in elementary school, too. I loved writing, and aside from a few minor spelling mistakes, the pages looked pristine. But the older I got, the less I could control my messy mind. In German middle and high school, essay questions are very common, and the time pressure was often overwhelming. There was no room to focus on aesthetics, and I think I pushed the absence of editing rules to its limits. Like you, I tend to think faster than I can write, and like you, my work was filled with scribbled-out sections, in addition to arrows showing where to continue reading, asterisks marking added parts, and margins crammed with extra thoughts. Somehow, my teachers let it slide and I got somewhat decent grades. Now that most of my writing is digital, this chaos of fragments is hidden in the final edit. Still, there are signs of my convoluted thinking: sentences broken up by brackets, semicolons, and dashes—just look at how I fragmented this one!
Have you ever written on Japanese manuscript paper (genkouyoushi)? It was an integral part of my weekly writing practice at Japanese language school, and I had to use it for the essays in my two university entrance exams. It remains the worst handwriting experience I ever had. As if writing in a foreign language with such a complex writing system wasn’t challenging enough, you also have to follow the strict rules of genkouyoushi. One character per square and for me, with my ever-shaky grasp on Japanese, it felt less like transcribing a fluid thought and more an exercise in endurance. How can I express my thoughts in a grammatically sound way? But now, what’s the kanji for this word, or that one? Character by character, I had to focus so intensely that I almost felt like going cross-eyed. Like that, the process is the polar opposite of my stream-of-consciousness drafting in English and German, but the result is weirdly similar—being so absorbed by the paper that everything else fades into the background.
This kind of ties into your question about how I currently listen to music. The idea of interacting with music in a passive way hits a spot, though I think that this is how I have always approached it. I wish I could be like Adi, who goes record hunting after work, then returns home with a new treasure, dims the lights in the tatami room, carefully arranges the cover next to the record player and just stays there, listening, savoring every single track. I don’t think there was ever a time when I could simply sit in a room and listen to an entire album. The most intense phase of consuming music for me was probably the mid-2000s, when I was glued to MTV and its German counterpart, VIVA—but do music videos even count as “listening” to music? For me, consuming music always had to be paired with something else. Not just anything, though. I can’t listen to music while I read, write or draw, except for some Lofi maybe. Now that I think about it, the “something else” seems to be movement: walking, running, exercising, riding the bus, train or driving a car, and, of course, dancing.
To wrap this up, let me leave some questions, not just as a courtesy: Among your mass of images of your trip, is there one or maybe a few that stand out to you, as some kind of icon? And how do you approach selecting?
2024/11/30 - At a supermarket in Azabu I saw a Christmas tree being priced at 55.000 yen and then another one at 100.000 yen.

7 Tips for Academic Success in High School
So, you are a high school student. Great! No matter what stereotypes you may have heard, high school is a magical time when students have the opportunity to learn, grow, and make mistakes to work on creating the academic habits they will carry with them to college and a career.
However, for high-achieving students, high school can also feel overwhelming. Academic success seems mandatory to get accepted into the right colleges and universities and pave the way toward a bright future.
Fortunately, the way to enjoy academic success in high school does not have to be a mystery. Here are seven tips for high school students to keep in mind as they strive for academic excellence during these formative years:
1. Explore and Find Your Passions
As a high school student, one of the most important ways to prepare yourself for a successful future is to do a lot of exploring so you can discover the areas of study and extracurricular activities that you’re passionate about.
A common misconception might lead students to believe that colleges and universities, even future employers, find a wide array of activities most impressive. In fact, leaders are actually often impressed by individuals who find their few passions and pursue them whole-heartedly.
Pursuing too many different activities at once in high school could lead to an overwhelming experience. Sometimes, selecting a few activities you care most about will lead to more success in those areas than if you attempt to get involved in every possible way throughout high school.
As Cassandra Allen, recent Wellesley graduate, notes in College Admission—How to Get Into Your Dream School: Real Students, Real Stories by James Lewis, “You don’t have to do everything; it’s okay to pick one or two clubs and be passionate about them.” Students like Allen learned the hard way that overfilling a high school schedule is not always the best strategy.
Remember, you are only human. Take time to explore the world and all possibilities of study while in high school–and then really delve into the subjects and activities you love the most.
2. Learn for Growth, Not Just Your GPA
Speaking of passions, learn to be passionate about the act of learning itself. Though the prospect of getting into the right college or university to eventually land the dream job might tempt you to focus on achieving the highest GPA possible, high school should also be a time when you fall in love with the process of learning.
The more fun you have while learning in high school, the more fun you will learn to have throughout your life, since life is a constant journey filled with new discoveries and lessons. If you can master the art of enjoying school now, imagine how much more fulfilling your entire high school and college experience will be later.
Focusing solely on grades and on-paper achievements will lead to a pressure-filled high school experience. Remember to take stock of where you are, who you are with, and what you are learning as you soak in your high school years. So many students would likely go back and do so if they could, so learn from those students now and enjoy learning for the fun of it! Why not, right?
3. Work On Time Management Skills
While time management does not sound like the fun you might want to have while learning, discovering how to use your time wisely will certainly help you enjoy high school more. You can accomplish time management in whatever ways work best for you, but some tried and true methods include the following:
Keep a calendar, whether digital or on paper. Calendars have a way of reminding you of the tasks you once thought were important, and you can even color-code them to reveal where you are spending most of your time--whether on studying, social time, extracurriculars, etc.
Schedule study sessions for classes before the week of the test. Studying over time is a much better plan for success on tests than cramming the week or night before. Give your brain time to digest information, and you’ll be surprised how much better you know the material–not just for the test, but for a lifetime of knowledge.
Prioritize the most important tasks. Determine which tasks every day are most important to you, and add them first on your list. For example, if you know you have a major project due in a week, you might want to prioritize brainstorming for that project and save the easier homework for later.
Create good habits, like reviewing notes each night before bed. Looking over information before bed can help the content solidify in your mind, so make it a habit to review notes for your hardest classes before you go to sleep. Any small, doable habit like this is a good idea--especially when you can form that habit at such a young age.
Strive to be on time. In every stage of your life, you’ll find that people respect those who are prompt. And when you are on time, you show others you respect their time as well as your own. The earlier you can learn to be on time, the better, since this skill will always serve you well.
Learning how to manage your time in high school will inevitably make the transition to college and your professional life much easier. Best of all, the more adept you become at time management, the more time you will hopefully create in your schedule to have some fun with friends, as well as studying and enjoying extracurriculars.
4. Get Involved in Your Community
The life of a high school student can sometimes feel like living in a bubble. However, you will become more engaged in your own life the more you engage with your surrounding community.
Not only does volunteerism add to a resume, but it also has a way of creating much happier students. Volunteering within your local and global community has been found to have major health benefits like lower blood pressure and a longer overall life–not to mention the good volunteers do for their fellow community members.
Moreover, by getting involved in your community, you will have more opportunities to explore your interests, thus providing you with a better idea of which area(s) of study you might want to pursue in college and in a future career.
You might even find that you start to get more interested in your classes, since you see the evidence of those lessons in your community and can apply academics to the world around you.
5. Utilize Your Resources
As with most accomplishments in life, succeeding in high school cannot be done without help. In high school, you have access to a wealth of resources, and you can usually find sources of help you hadn’t even thought about.
Of course, your parents, teachers, family members, and friends should all be there to help you; but you have other resources at your fingertips as well.
High School Counselors
Get to know your high school counselors, as these individuals will not only be able to help you manage coursework and life throughout your early high school years but will also become invaluable resources as you plan for life after high school--in college and beyond.
High School Honor Societies
As a high school student, you also have access to high school honor societies like the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS), where you can apply for scholarships, gain leadership experience, and learn tips and tricks from other scholars and educators--as well as plug into a network.
Becoming a member of a high school honor society will also give you the resources you need to create both short- and long-term academic goals.
College Students
If you plan to apply for college, you should also consider consulting students you know who are currently in college, like family members or friends, who went through the years you are about to experience.
Ask them what advice they would give you, what you should prepare for now, and how they were able to achieve academic success in high school. Though every person is different, gathering as much information as possible will only help you understand the process of preparing for your future and what you should expect.
Books and Online Publications
Of course, you also have access to books and online publications about high school academic success, preparing for college, and planning for the future you want.
Books like College Admission—How to Get Into Your Dream School: Real Students, Real Stories, for example, contain stories and tips from real college students on topics from formulating good study habits to learning how to relax when school gets overwhelming.
Always think critically about where you get your information and check your sources; but with the digital world so full of resources, you can usually find plenty of answers to any question you might have.
6. Prioritize Your Health
You cannot have academic success in high school if you are not healthy enough to experience it fully, so make sure you always prioritize your health.
Tip #3 will help with this, but make time to exercise, eat balanced, nutritious meals, drink plenty of water, and sleep. Take a rest when you really need it, carve out time for mindfulness in your day, and spend time with friends and family.
Your body and mind work best when you take good care of them, so do not sacrifice your health for the sake of a good grade. You know when you can work harder and when you should take a break, so listen to yourself and learn your own signals.
7. Create Your Own List of Success Tips
Finally, realize that you are a unique individual and will be able to create your own list of success tips as you go through high school.
Every student and adult could tell you personal lessons they’ve learned, but only you can get to know yourself well enough to craft your own list.
By recognizing your individual power, you will also begin to learn that only you can be the best version of yourself. Know your value by prioritizing your academic success in high school, learn which classes and activities you are most passionate about, and enjoy learning while you have a safe and supportive place to do so--you will thank yourself in the future!

5 Best Laptops For Nursing Students
Tumblr media
Nursing students are always on the go, juggling heavy books and equipment. If you're like most nursing students, then your laptop is an essential tool for completing homework assignments at home or in the library. What's more, it can also be a lifesaver when you need to use it as a portable workstation during clinical! So how do you find the best laptops for nursing students? We've got some tips below.
Tumblr media
1) CPU Power Drug calculations are integral to nursing. Without a speedy CPU, you'll spend more time working on your computer rather than using it as a study aid. A large multi-core processor (four cores or more) is an absolute must if you're using complex calculation programs or going through drug cards. It would help if you also considered that you might be required to run other programs like EKG interpretation software in nursing school. So if it isn't fast enough to handle simple arithmetic and multiple programs, then you're better off with a laptop that can do more. Opt for at least 8 GB of RAM or even upgrade to 16 GB or more if your budget allows. 2) Solid State Drive One of the best features to look for in a nursing laptop is a solid-state drive (SSD). SSDs are costlier than traditional hard drives, but they're also much faster and let you access your files almost instantaneously. In addition, it's easier to find SSDs with ample storage space, so you won't have to worry about running out of space anytime soon. 3) Touchscreen Technology Chances are, you'll be touching your nursing laptop a lot! The latest touchscreen technology makes it easier for you to complete your work quickly on the go. It's also a great way to make your laptop stand out in a sea of plain black or gray devices. Just keep in mind that touchscreen laptops are often pricier, so you might want to consider going with a regular old laptop first and upgrading later on if it's worth the splurge for you. 4) Affordable Price When shopping around for a new nursing laptop, it's easy to get caught up in specs and features. But at the end of the day, you'll want a laptop that's within your budget and won't break the bank if something goes wrong. So before you decide on any one model, make sure to compare prices online and ask about student discounts at your local electronics stores. Also, if you can get your hands on a used laptop, that might be the best option for budget-conscious nursing students. Just make sure to buy it from an authorized reseller and thoroughly inspect the device before making any final purchase!

What’s Missing From Zoom Reminds Us What It Means to Be Human
Over the last month billons of people have been unwilling participants in the largest unintentional social experiment ever run – testing how video conferencing replaced face-to-face communication.
While we’ve discovered that in many cases it can, more importantly we’ve discovered that, regardless of bandwidth and video resolution, these apps are missing the cues humans use when they communicate. While we might be spending the same amount of time in meetings, we’re finding we’re less productive, social interactions are less satisfying and distance learning is less effective. And we’re frustrated that we don’t know why.
Here’s why video conferencing apps don’t capture the complexity of human interaction.
All of us sheltering at home have used video conferencing apps for virtual business meetings, virtual coffees with friends, family meetings, online classes, etc. And while the technology allows us to conduct business, see friends and transfer information one-on-one and one-to-many from our homes, there’s something missing. It’s just not the same as connecting live at the conference room table, the classroom or local coffee shop. And it seems more exhausting. Why?
What’s missing? It turns out that today’s video conferencing technology doesn’t emulate how people interact with others in person. Every one of these video applications has ignored a half-century of research on how people communicate.
Meeting Location In the physical world the space and context give you cues and reinforcement. Are you meeting on the 47th floor boardroom with a great view? Are you surrounded by other animated conversations in a coffee shop or sitting with other classmates in a lecture hall? With people working from home you can’t tell where the meeting is or how important the location or setting is. In a video conference all the contextual clues are homogenized. You look the same whether you are playing poker or making a sales call, in a suit or without pants. (And with video conferences people are seeing your private space. Now you need to check if there’s anything embarrassing lying around. Or your kids are screaming and interrupting meetings. It’s fatiguing trying to keep business and home life separate.)
In the real world you just don’t teleport into a meeting. Video conferencing misses the transitions as you enter a building, find the room and sit down. The same transitions are missing when you leave a video conference. There is no in and out. The conference is just over.
Physical Contact Second, most business and social gatherings start with physical contact – a handshake or a hug. There’s something about that first physical interaction that communicates trust and connection through touch. In business meetings there’s also the formal ritual of exchanging business cards. Those all are preambles to establish a connection for the meeting which follows.
Meeting Space Context In person we visually take in much more information than just looking at someone’s face. If we’re in a business meeting, we’ll scan the room, rapidly changing our gaze. We can see what’s on desks or hanging on the walls, what’s in bookshelves or in cubicles. If we’re in a conference or classroom, we’ll see who we’re sitting next to, notice what they’re wearing, carrying, reading, etc. We can see relationships between people and notice deference, hierarchy, side glances and other subtle cues. And we use all of this to build a context and make assumptions—often unconsciously —about personalities, positions, social status and hierarchy.
Looking in a Mirror While Having A Meeting Before meeting in person, you may do a quick check of your appearance, but you definitely don’t hold up a mirror in the middle of a meeting constantly seeing how you look. Yet with the focus on us as much as on the attendees, most video apps seem designed to make us self conscious and distract from watching who’s speaking.
Non-Verbal Cues Most importantly, researchers have known for at least fifty years that at least half of how we communicate is through non-verbal cues. In conversation we watch other’s hands, follow their gestures, focus on their facial expressions and their tone of voice. We make eye contact and notice whether they do. And we are constantly following their body language (posture, body orientation, how they stand or sit, etc.)
In a group meeting it’s not only following the cues of the speaker, but it’s often the side glances, eye rolls and shrugs between our peers and other participants that offer direction and nuance to the tenor of a meeting. On a computer screen, all that cross person interaction is lost.
The sum of these non verbal cues is the (again often unconscious) background of every conversation.
But video conferencing apps just offer a fixed gaze from one camera. Everyone is relegated to a one-dimensional square on the screen. It’s the equivalent of having your head in a vise, having been wheeled into a meeting wearing blinders while tied to a chair.
Are Olfactory Cues Another Missing Piece? There’s one more set of communication cues we may be missing over video. Scientists have discovered that in animals, including mammals and primates, communication not only travels through words, gestures, body language and facial expressions but also through smells via the exchange of chemicals and hormones called pheromones. These are not odors that consciously register, but nevertheless are picked up by the olfactory bulb in our nose. Pheromones send signals to the brain about sexual status, danger and social organization. It’s hypothesized odors and pheromones control some of our social behaviors and regulate hormone levels. Could these olfactory cues be one additional piece of what we’re missing when we try to communicate over video? If so, emulating these clues digitally will be a real challenge.
Why Zoom and Video Teleconferencing is Exhausting If you’ve spent any extended period using video for a social or business meeting during the pandemic, you’ve likely found it exhausting. Or if you’re using video for learning, you may realize it’s affecting your learning by reducing your ability to process and retain information.
We’re exhausted because of the extra cognitive processing (fancy word for having to consciously do extra thinking) to fill in the missing 50% of the conversation that we’d normally get from non-verbal and olfactory cues. It’s the accumulation of all these missing signals that’s causing mental fatigue.
Turning Winners Into Losers And there’s one more thing that makes video apps taxing. While they save a lot of time for initial meetings and screening prospects, salespeople are discovering that closing complex deals via video is difficult. Even factoring out the economy, the reason is that in person, great salespeople know to “read” a meeting. For example, they can tell when someone who was nodding yes to deal actually meant “no way.” Or they can pick up the “tell me more signal” when someone leans forward. In Zoom all those cues are gone. As a result, deals that should be easy to close will take longer, and those that are hard won’t happen. You’re investing the same or more time getting the meetings, but frustrated that little or no forward progress occurs. It’s a productivity killer for sales.
In social situations a feel for body language may help us sense that a friend who’s smiling and saying everything is fine is actually have a hard time in their personal life. Without these physical cues—and the loss of physical contact—may lead to a greater distance between our family and friends. Video can bridge the distance but lacks the empathy a hug communicates.
An Opportunity for Innovators to Take Video Conferencing to the Next Level This billion person science experiment replacing face-to face communication with digital has convinced me of a few things:
The current generation of video conferencing applications ignore how humans communicate
They don’t help us capture the non-verbal communication cues – touch, gestures, postures, glances, odors, etc.
They haven’t done their homework in understanding how important each of these cues is and how they interact with each other. (What is the rank order of the importance of each cue?)
Nor do they know which of these cues is important in different settings. For example, what are the right cues to signal empathy in social settings, sincerity, trustworthiness and rapport in business settings or attention and understanding in education?
There’s a real opportunity for a next generation of video conference applications to fill these holes. These new products will begin to address issues such as: How do you shake hands? Exchange business cards? Pick up on the environment around the speaker? Notice the non-verbal cues?
There are already startups offering emotion detection and analytics software that measure speech patterns and facial cues to infer feelings and attention levels. Currently none of these tools are integrated into broadly used video conferencing apps. And none of them are yet context sensitive to particular meeting types. Perhaps an augmented reality overlay with non verbal cues for business users might be a first step as powerful additions.
Lessons Learned
Today’s video conferencing applications are a one-note technical solution to the complexity of human interaction
Without the missing non-verbal cues, business is less productive, social interactions are less satisfying and distance learning is less effective
There’s an opportunity for someone to build the next generation of video conference applications that can recognize key cues in the appropriate context
This time with psychologists and cognitive researchers leading the team

Choosing the Right MATLAB Assignment Help for your Homework Needs
Working on an assignment is probably the hardest thing ever, especially if you need to complete MATLAB assignments. There are too many things involved, and you need to compete with different variables. You can connect with the MATLAB assignment help services that are available online to get the assignment done perfectly with the help of experts. However, the online world is being ruled with several players, and you need to choose someone who is both reliable and understands your needs completely. Here are a few things that we understand about choosing the right assignment service for your needs. •   The first thing to consider is the quality of the content that you are likely to receive from the assignment help services. When you submit the assignment, it is important that they assign an expert to work on that particular assignment. Apart from knowing the subject matter, they should be able to render their help the right way. o    They should know how to mathematically calculate all parts of the MATLAB assignment, and should know what parts need to go into the final draft of the assignment. o    Apart from just the calculation, they should be able to articulate the finer points, and make a summary of the same in their assignment. o    You should hire someone who understands the representation as much as they understand the finer points of the subject. To know the whether the assignment service will deliver the right content, you need to connect with the people who have used the digital signal processing assignment help services earlier and read through their reviews. •   Once you have clearly reviewed the content and the quality of the assignment, you need to understand whether they have a history of submitting the assignments on time or not. You need to make sure that the services understand the delivery timeline and strictly adhere to it. You should ask them for a draft assignment version within a time period, and ask them to submit the final after that. The deadlines should be seriously considered by them. •    Plagiarism can get you into trouble, which is why you need to choose a MATLAB assignment help service that will tackle plagiarism, and will make sure you get a unique assignment. Uniqueness in case of MATLAB will be related to the representation and how easily they make the results easy to understand. •   Customer support is important for the digital signal processing assignment helpservices that you are planning to get help from. You should ideally have proper communication from the people at the core of these services. Make sure you check everything you need about the support. If there is a small issue with the assignment, then they should promptly help you. if that is not the case, you should opt for someone else. It is important you research well before choosing the right assignment help services. Check the recommendations provided online for the same, and only when you are convinced you should send your assignment work. Make sure you have a budget in mind for the assignment help.

MozCon 2019: The Top Takeaways From Day One
Posted by KameronJenkins
Rand, Russ, Ruth, Rob, and Ross. Dana and Darren. Shannon and Sarah. We didn’t mean to (we swear we didn’t) but the first day of MozCon was littered with alliteration, takeaways, and oodles of insights from our speakers. Topics ranged from local SEO, link building, and Google tools, and there was no shortage of "Aha!" moments. And while the content was diverse, the themes are clear: search is constantly changing.
Ready? Let's make like Roger in his SERP submarine and dive right in!
Sarah's welcome
Our fearless leader took the stage to ready our attendees for their deep sea dive over the next three days. Our guiding theme to help set the tone? The deep sea of data that we find ourselves immersed in every day.
People are searching more than ever before on more types of devices than ever before… we truly are living in the golden age of search. As Sarah explained though, not all search is created equal. Because Google wants to answer searchers’ questions as quickly as possible, they’ve moved from being the gateway to information to being the destination for information in many cases. SEOs need to be able to work smarter and identify the best opportunities in this new landscape.
"Let's lift each other up."@SarahBird This is truly what #MozCon is all about!

Rand Fishkin — Web Search 2019: The Essential Data Marketers Need
Next up was Rand of SparkToro who dropped a ton of data about the state of search in 2019.
To set the stage, Rand gave us a quick review of the evolution of media: “This new thing is going to kill this old thing!” has been the theme of panicked marketers for decades. TV was supposed to kill radio. Computers were supposed to kill TV. Mobile was supposed to kill desktop. Voice search was supposed to kill text search. But as Rand showed us, these new technologies often don’t kill the old ones — they just take up all our free time. We need to make sure we’re not turning away from mediums just because they’re “old” and, instead, make sure our investments follow real behavior.
Voice search didn’t kill desktop search. Both mobile and desktop are still big. Don’t ignore either. #mozcon @randfish pic.twitter.com/YusAXepmS9
— Yosef Silver (@ysilver) July 15, 2019
Rand’s deck was also chock-full of data from Jumpshot about how much traffic Google is really sending to websites these days, how much of that comes from paid search, and how that’s changed over the years.
In 2019, Google sent ~20 fewer organic clicks via browser searches than in 2016.
In 2016, there were 26 organic clicks for every paid click. In 2019, that ratio is 11:1.
Over time, you can see a trend of Google cannibalizing more and more clicks. In 2016 there were 26 organic clicks/paid click. In 2019? 11:1. Still big but a lot smaller. @randfish #mozcon
— Ruth Burr Reedy (@ruthburr) July 15, 2019
Google still owns the lion’s share of the search market and still sends a significant amount of traffic to websites, but in light of this data, SEOs should be thinking about how their brands can benefit even without the click.
MozCon 2019 off to a great start. First of many interesting snippets from Rand Fishkin: “More than half of all Google searches are now zero-click”. Ouch.#mozcon #mozcon2019 #contentmarketing #google #search #seo #clickthelink @Moz @randfish pic.twitter.com/au5UZSPtP5
— Jonathan Clarke (@TechnologyJon) July 15, 2019
And finally, Rand left us with some wisdom from the world of social — getting engagement on social media can get you the type of attention it takes to earn quality links and mentions in a way that’s much easier than manual, cold outreach.
Ruth Burr Reedy — Human > Machine > Human: Understanding Human-Readable Quality Signals and Their Machine-Readable Equivalents
It’s 2019. And though we all thought by this year we’d have flying cars and robots to do our bidding, machine learning has come a very long way. Almost frustratingly so — the push and pull of making decisions for searchers versus search engines is an ever-present SEO conundrum.
Ruth argued that in our pursuit of an audience, we can’t get too caught up in the middleman (Google), and in our pursuit of Google, we can’t forget the end user.
Optimizing for humans-only is inefficient. Those who do are likely missing out on a massive opportunity. Optimizing for search engines-only is reactive. Those who do will likely fall behind.
Optimizing for human-readable quality signals means even if something doesn’t turn out to be a ranking factor, you still haven’t wasted your time. #MozCon
— Ruth Burr Reedy (@ruthburr) July 15, 2019
She also left us with the very best kind of homework… homework that’ll make us all better SEOs and marketers!
Read the Quality Rater Guidelines
Ask what your site is currently benefiting from that Google might eliminate or change in the future
Write better (clearer, simpler) content
Examine your SERPs with the goal of understanding search intent so you can meet it
Lean on subject matter experts to make your brand more trustworthy
Conduct a reputation audit — what’s on the internet about your company that people can find?
And last, but certainly not least, stop fighting about this stuff. It’s boring.
Homework: Stop fighting about this stuff, it’s boring #MozCon

Dana DiTomaso — Improved Reporting & Analytics Within Google Tools
Freshly fueled with cinnamon buns and glowing with the energy of a thousand jolts of caffeine, we were ready to dive back into it — this time with Dana from Kick Point.
This year was a continuation of Dana’s talk on goal charters. If you haven’t checked that out yet or you need a refresher, you can view it here!
Dana emphasized the importance of data hygiene. Messy analytics, missing tracking codes, poorly labeled events… we’ve all been there. Dana is a big advocate of documenting every component of your analytics.
She also blew us away with a ton of great insight on making our reports accessible — from getting rid of jargon and using the client’s language to using colors that are compatible with printing.
Love how @danaditomaso encourages the use of labels for her report names... "Are people getting in touch" such a great basic label. That doesn't require a lot of interpretation / translation #mozcon pic.twitter.com/ZLUwoY1L7J

Rob Bucci — Local Market Analytics: The Challenges and Opportunities
The first thing you need to know is that Rob finally did it — he finally got a cat.
.@STATrob kicked off his preso with a kitten and I couldn’t be more interested in local SEO now. #mozcon pic.twitter.com/PKctqVcyQJ
— Angela Rivera (@angfrivera) July 15, 2019
Very bold of Rob to assume he would have our collective attention after dropping something adorable like that on us. Luckily, we were all able to regroup and focus on his talk — how there are challenges aplenty in the local search landscape, but there are even more opportunities if you overcome them.
Rob came equipped with a ton of stats about localized SERPs that have massive implications for rank tracking.
73 percent of the 1.2 million SERPs he analyzed contained some kind of localized feature.
25 percent of the sites he was tracking had some degree of variability between markets.
85 percent was the maximum variability he saw across zip codes in a single market.
That’s right… rankings can vary by zip code, even for queries you don’t automatically associate as local intent. Whether you’re a national brand without physical storefronts or you’re a single-location retail store, localization has a huge impact on how you show up to your audience.
With this in mind, Rob announced a huge initiative that Moz has been working on… Local Market Analytics — complete with local search volume! Eep! See how you perform on hyper-local SERPs with precision and ease — whether you’re an online or location-based business.

Ross Simmonds— Keywords Aren't Enough: How to Uncover Content Ideas Worth Chasing
Ross Simmonds was up next, and he dug into how you might be creating content wrong if you’re building it strictly around keyword research.
The methodology we marketers need to remember is Research - Rethink - Remix.
Research:
Find the channel your audience spends time on. What performs well? How can you serve this audience?
Rethink:
Find the content that your audience wants most. What topics resonate? What stories connect?
Remix:
Measure how your audience responds to the content. Can this be remixed further? How can we remix at scale?
Awesome. Ross lays out the process for finding the user / channel / content fit. Here's the framework... Resarch > Rethink > Remix By @TheCoolestCool #mozcon pic.twitter.com/cBRCIZIony
— Andy Crestodina (@crestodina) July 15, 2019
If you use this method and you still aren’t sure if you should pursue a content opportunity, ask yourself the following questions:
Will it give us a positive ROI?
Does it fall within our circle of competence?
Does the benefit outweigh the cost of creation?
Will it give us shares and links and engagement?
Thanks, Ross, for such an actionable session!
Shannon McGuirk — How to Supercharge Link Building with a Digital PR Newsroom
Shannon of Aira Digital took the floor with real-life examples of how her team does link building at scale with what she calls the “digital PR newsroom.”
The truth is, most of us are still link building like it’s 1948 with “planned editorial” content. When we do this, we’re missing out on a ton of opportunity (about 66%!) that can come from reactive editorial and planned reactive editorial.
Shannon encouraged us to try tactics that have worked for her team such as:
Having morning scrum meetings to go over trending topics and find reactive opportunities
Staffing your team with both storytellers and story makers
Holding quarterly reviews to see which content types performed best and using that to inform future work
Her talk was so good that she even changed Cyrus’s mind about link building!

Darren Shaw— From Zero to Local Ranking Hero
Next up, Darren of Whitespark chronicled his 8-month long journey to growing a client’s local footprint.
Here’s what he learned and encouraged us to implement in response:
Track from multiple zip codes around the city
Make sure your citations are indexed
The service area section in GMB won’t help you rank in those areas. It’s for display purposes only
Invest in a Google reviews strategy
The first few links earned really have a positive impact, but it reaches a point of diminishing returns
Any individual strategy will probably hit a point of diminishing returns
A full website is better than a single-page GMB website when it comes to local rankings
As SEOs, we’d all do well to remember that it’s not one specific activity, but the aggregate, that will move the needle!

Russ Jones — Esse Quam Videri: When Faking it is Harder than Making It
Rounding out day one of MozCon was our very own Russ Jones on Esse Quam Videri — “To be, rather than to seem.”
By Russ’s own admission, he’s a pretty good liar, and so too are many SEOs. In a poll Russ ran on Twitter, he found that 64 percent of SEOs state that they have promoted sites they believe are not the best answer to the query. We can be so “rank-centric” that we engage in tactics that make our websites look like we care about the users, when in reality, what we really care about is that Google sees it.
Russ encouraged SEOs to help guide the businesses we work for to “be real companies” rather than trying to look like real companies purely for SEO benefit.
Thanks to Russ for reminding us to stop sacrificing the long run for the short run!

Digital Signal Processing Homework Help
http://matlabhomeworkexperts.com/digital-signal-processing-system.php
Digital Signal Processing (DSP) is the process of analyzing and modifying a signal to optimize or improve its efficiency or performance. It involves applying various mathematical and computational algorithms to analog and digital signals to produce a signal that's of higher quality than the original signal. Digital signal processors take a digital signal and process it to improve the signal into clearer sound, faster data or sharper images. The signals are processed so the information contained in them can be displayed or converted to another type of signal. At Matlabhomeworkexperts.com, we have dedicated, well experienced, and highly educated experts to provide help in Digital Signal Processing using Matlab assignments, homeworks or projects. We create the most comfortable environment for our students, who can enhance their creative and academic skills.

#MozCon

And just when we thought it couldn’t get any more actionable, Dana drops some free Google Data Studio resources on us! You can check them out here.

Not an easy thing to do! :) INCREDIBLE talk by @ShannonMcGuirk_ !!! Don't miss her #MozCon deck on strategic link building! https://t.co/f10KGDYt7y

@DarrenShaw_ is on stage at #MozCon right now sharing all the awesome details of his case study on going From Zero to Local Ranking Hero. Get an inside look into the process, strategies, and tactics implemented on our site! https://t.co/7UXOpcwr5A

Really great talk by @rjonesx today! Great mix of philosophical food for thought & actionable takeaways. I left feeling inspired and like I have specific action items. #mozcon #mozcon2019 pic.twitter.com/s46LvWkmIT
