Have you explored Alethea Arnaquq-Baril’s work?
Recently I finally had a chance to see her documentary Angry Inuk. It’s streaming on Kanopy.
“Inuit have always been an afterthought in international discussions around seal hunting. We are casualties of a faraway war. Seal hunting was a moral hot topic in the 70’s and 80’s, and has once again gained the world’s attention, but times have changed since then. Aaju Peter has learned the language of the law, and now she is working with young Inuit who speak the language of media.
This time, Inuit will have a voice.”
I then revisited her animated short Sloth.

Yesterday I binge watched all six episodes of The Night Manager Season One, the riveting series directed by Susanne Bier. It’s streaming on Amazon Prime. The series focuses on the conflict between Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston, but features a deep supporting cast. Olivia Colman’s performance as Angela Burr stands out for me as a particular strength of the series. It’s stunningly shot. I love the way it focuses on the interpersonal tensions and the careful unfolding of events that lead to the dramatic conclusion. I’m looking forward to Season Two.
Have you explored Susanne Bier’s directing work? Watching this series remind me that there are still many of her films I’ve yet to see. Her film After the Wedding is an amazing film.

Have you explored Emma Piper-Burket‘s work?  Her documentary Dream City is streaming on Fandor.
In her director’s statement she writes: “I made Dream City to share an alternate approach to a region we see much and experience little of in the news. Dream City is Iraqi Kurdistan as I have experienced it over the years. Diana is my friend, I visited her and we made a film together-this is the experience that I am sharing with you now.“

My Call the Midwife binge watching continues. The last few days I’ve watched from Season 2 Episode 5 through Season 3 Episode 4. I’ve appreciated the work of China Moo-Young, Minkie Spiro, Thea Sharrock, and Juliet May.
The series is addictive. Sorry it took me so long to dive in. It’s a pleasure to watch episode after episode brought into being by women directors. I might just keep going until I’ve seen them all.

The Tale of Four directed by Gabourey Sidibe is streaming free online as part of Refinery 29′s Shatterbox Anthology. Have you seen it yet?
“Inspired by Nina Simone's haunting 1966 song, "Four Women," Sidibe's film bravely captures the harrowing realities of the mothers, daughters, and undaunted revolutionaries fighting back against police brutality and the specter of mass incarceration. Studded with a powerhouse cast including her Empire co-star, Jussie Smollett, The Tale Of Four premiered to rave reviews this past June at the Nantucket Film Festival, cementing Sidibe's status as a fresh directorial voice to be reckoned with.”

Watching Rosie Stapel’s Portret van een tuin | Portrait of a Garden was a very satisfying experience. The film is streaming at this time on MUBI as part of their The Unusual Subject series.
“A truly undiscovered subject is chased in this enveloping documentary which at first glance concerns the life of a single garden, then expands outwards in subject matter towards generational gaps, friendship, and time itself. A lovely and generous look into a world ripe for discovery.“
I notice it is also streaming on Fandor. If you’re at all interested in cultivation of plant life, this is a film to seek out.

I appreciate Jane Qian’s beautiful new short Phoenix.
‘"Phoenix" is an art/dance film with the theme of 'rising from the ashes.' It was created to help the victims of the recent California wildfires begin to rebuild by raising some much needed awareness and funds.
Filmed at what remains of Tony and Diana Luboff's home in Ojai, California.
The film is a visual expression of how we move through the stages of grief to find hope and rebuild.
How you can help:

Donate to help all those who lost their home in Ojai - ojaistrongcom.wordpress.com/2017/12/11/people-who-lost-homes/
