would absolutely LOVE recs for cheaper rpgs with better endings 🙏
OF COURSE!!
These are all rpg games that have been out enough that discounts and cheaper prices are quite common. I think it might depends on the country and time, but they should be relatively easy to find (both on steam, or cdkeys or gog).
I put them in order of how satisfied I was with the ending! (no spoilers)
Okay, this is a maybe. Not sure if I would call this an rpg but Heaven's Vault allow you to make choices in your game so almost? the ending is SO GOOD. I was absolutely floored and satisfied. You know when a game peppers clues everywhere and then you realize THAT was it? Not only it is good, but not everything is explained, not in a bad sense, but in a "you can put together the history of the world". Dreamfall Chapters is another game that is not a classic rpg but I would absolutely recommend. Unavowed too!
Pathfinder Kingmaker. This game is so dear to me, and the endings, especially the companions endings and the romances endings are so detailed! Little changes in the game and you can get different ones! Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous too, but that is relatively new so it might be more expensive.
The whole Dragon Age series, from origins to Dragon Age II and Inquisition (if you consider the last DLC the ending) are just perfect!
Sorcery! not only I love this rpg to pieces, but it is pretty cheap (it is one story but divided in 4 games, so you can try the first part and see if you like it). The 4th game actually reminds me of BG3 act 3 but done well haha. You have to sneak in a certain place in a city, and it is beautiful. So many choices and the romance really works so well (I think it is kinda... part of the story, as in the game benefits from having the romance in it)
Enderal (which is actually a free game). NOW WAIT. If you played this game you are wondering why I would put it even here - the thing is... I think the endings are just perfect.
Divinity Original Sin 1, no companions or romances but I found the ending a nice and complete conclusion to the game.
Neverwinter Nights 2 if you play the Mask of the Betrayer as a perfect ending!
The original Baldur's Gate games do a good job with the ending if you play the Enhanced Edition! There are also some great mods (DORN ROMANCE MOD) that in my opinion fix some things!
Age of Decadence: no companions, and definitely different from an usual rpg, imagine it more as an exploratory rpg! The ending explained every strange little thing going on in the game.
Tides of Numenera. This game gets a lot of criticism, but I think the story (for how much chaos there is in the world of the game) has an interesting and surprising ending

games i played for the first time this year that i liked
mass effect legendary edition - technically started this near the end of last year but finished it in january. originally tried it to fill the hole bg3 left in my heart, and while i didnt have quite as much fun with it i still thought all 3 games were really good (despite their issues. of which there were many). liaras romance was lovely and i really loved how interconnected the overall experience felt with so many choices carrying over. i didnt really care for the gameplay but to be fair im not really big on shooters. the highlight was definitely the companions, most of whom i got very attached to. also i wish more rpgs/companion oriented games had something like the citadel dlc (the patched in epilogue party in bg3 filled that same role for me and was just as if not more satisfying).
dragon age origins - beloved. soooo much better than i expected. i was desperate for more stuff like bg3 and mass effect and remembered someone recommending the series to me on reddit forever ago, so i thought id give the games the shot and theyve altered my brain chemistry in irreversible ways. origins is my least favourite out of the first 3, but it was still very good, i loved most of the companions (minus one) and the roleplaying was deeply satisfying, especially with the origin mechanic. i absolutely loathed the gameplay but the writing was so engaging that i kept wanting to play anyway despite that. awakening was also very fun despite how short it was, the companions felt like they had a ton of personality and depth with what little they had to work with playtime wise.
dragon age 2 - my personal favourite of the series, soooooo good. hawke was just so fun to play as, i loved the personality system and the fact that you get given actual family members as major characters with preestablished dynamics with them, i was so invested. the companions were of course wonderful (especially a certain someone. who ive been very normal about ever since) and i loved the passage of time element. the rivalry-friendship system despite its issues is also something i miss still, i wish more games tried more unique approaches to companion relationships like this. and while the story absolutely fell apart in the third act i still think it had the best concepts out of the series.
dragon age inquisition - despite hating the open world aspect and the combat, i still loved this game. i loved the storyline of the inky (especially in trespasser which i thought was fantastic as a whole) and adored the companions. i loved seeing little references to my worldstate and getting to customize little bits of skyhold. also the judgements were very fun.
dredge - i fuckin love fishing games. gorgeous little game with some neat lore and soooo many cool creature designs. i loved the bestiary/pokedex/collection aspect and really enjoyed hunting down all the aberrations. the dlc was okay, just wish both had more content and didnt end so abruptly.
divinity original sin - forgettable companions, bland writing and annoying voice acting, but im still putting it on here for the sandbox-y exploration and the amount of freedom it offers. it was really neat how much the game just let me do whatever i wanted and go wherever i wanted for the most part.
dragon age veilguard - this one im very mixed on. i liked the companions even if they didnt feel as well written or multilayered as the ones from the previous games, and i loved some parts of the story, like everything to do with solas and things like the weisshaupt siege sequence. the exploration was very fun (i loved looking for all the chests), the environments were gorgeous, and while the combat got really boring after a while its still the most fun that ive had with the action the series. i also personally loved the new artstyle, there were so many gorgeous armor sets, the customization options for rook were very really nice (despite being overhyped and startlingly sexist in terms of the options provided). the hardening mechanic i know some people are mixed on but i thought was neat. but despite that, there are also all the retcons, the disrespectful way some returning characters are treated (looking at especially isabela), the incredibly lackluster faction "storylines" (if you can even call some of them that), the companion quests/storylines which as a whole are not great (apart from davrin who i thought was the real standout), the general lack of interesting character conflict and the flat and uninteresting way the game tackles its politics/lore. also the worldstates being thrown out was a real shame. overall i had a ton of fun playing it but the more i thought back on it the worse and worse my opinion of it has gotten over time. putting it here regardless because the good parts were just that good, at least for me.
the forgotten city - a smaller/shorter experience that was really refreshing and fun! i loved the timeloop mechanic, it felt really streamlined in a way that made it so much less tedious than what id have expected, and it was really cool how much freedom it offered in terms of the exploration. despite the large cast everyone was really easy to differentiate/remember thanks to their memorable personalities and the excellent voice acting, and while im a little mixed on the ending twist the ending sequence itself felt very satisfying.
slime rancher - very cute game, the gameplay loop and exploration was very fun (despite some tedium in the middle prior to being able to automate chores), i loved the artstyle and all the designs of the different slimes. achievement hunting for it was quite fun too. i loved getting to optimize my setup to be more efficient. the stamina bar and inventory limit are probably my biggest complaints apart from the aforementioned grindy bits, but thankfully theyre easy to mod out which made the experience much smoother.
divinity original sin 2 - currently still playing through this one but putting it here anyway since im more than halfway through it. definitely an improvement over the previous game in basically every aspect. the writing is better and the companions are more memorable (not quite on bg3 levels in my opinion but theyre likeable enough), and playing as lohse has been really fun, i love all the unique little story touches and interactions it adds. the romance seems more of a side/flavor thing for the most part so far, which isnt a huge deal. it wont become one of my favourites or anything but its fun enough so far.

i finished divinity original sin II definitive edition
Tumblr media
yapping my personal thoughts below cus this game sucked the soul outta me
yes i played this because of bg3 and FUCK did larian improve on a lot of stuff from this game. i spent pretty much act 1-2 just suffering and being lost, and by the time i understand combat i was already burnt out. this is mainly my own skill issue obviously, i've read forum posts where people share better builds and to switch characters around and such, which was simply not how i wanted to play the game so maybe i shot myself in the foot there.
i also felt like the narrator's speed to read things was too slow and i eventually just skipped most of the voice acting (which was a shame cus they're really good! i cant be assed to wait tho!!) the hints of personality that my godwoken can show/roleplay as isn't as much as i had hoped either-- but it is, ironically, still better than Tav's imo.
i also didn't know much about the previous divinity games which i thought wouldn't matter much. (it eventually did).
basically i can and will complain about everything this game did cus i didn't really enjoy it. if i had to put the game into a word i'd say: exhausting.
HOWEVER that one scene with lohse where you call her back when she's possessed was 10/10 most tender written shit i've ever read in a game. i am so sad it's implied lohse and my godwoken basically broke up and went their own path. truly men ain't shit.
in any case, glad i played the game. would never touch it again.

I heard (by heard, someone datamined the game) there is a bug that if you send karlach to hell with wyll that scene overrides the romance scene. also, it's pretty unfinished. upper baldurs's gate isn't even implemented yet and it was supposed to be in game. and in the upper city karlachs quest should have been able to continue, so the outcomes we got where the ones where you neglect her quest basically since it just isn't finished. there is a lot of cut content. luckily larian has a track record of added that in later, they did so with Divinity: Original Sin 2 in their definitive edition. is that ideaal? No, but there might be a huge update later on that might fix a lot of those things.
Yes! I saw that as well and tried to do the sad route (traumatized myself), but still no romance scene. Just a straight cut to the cinematic ending. Gosh, I'm looking forward to it, because I read some stuff about Cazador as well. I know Larian will keep this updated and patched. I'm just feeling a bit empty after that 90 hour playthrough and an ending that was a bit meh.

Started a new multiplayer playthrough of Divinity: Original Sin 2, because it's been an age. We first played it around its release, before all the updates and definitive edition, about 5 years ago.
First time, I played as a dwarf. This time I'm rolling an elf, so I can eat all the corpses. 😘

Male Version (beta)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
D:OS2 Small Elves
This mod aims to solve the aesthetic issues with Elves in DOS2. I started looking for ways to alter races in the game after realizing Sebille is the same height as The Red Prince. When I began looking for ways to achieve this someone mentioned they had swapped their player character with Saheila, so I found her file in Divinity Engine and saw that she used a regular model that was scaled smaller than other elf NPCs. And so this mod was born.
This mod changes the scale of every elf NPC (71 female elves/75 male elves/146 in total) female elves have been scaled from 1.0 to 0.8 and male elves have been scaled from 1.0 to 0.85. A simple but effective change. Armor and weapons scale with the character, animations and combat seem to remain fully in tact. This does not alter player made Elf characters, this does alter Sebille since she is an NPC.
KNOWN ISSUES
The male version is considered to be a beta release at the moment. It's in good shape overall but there are two NPC's that so far do not reflect their lowered scale. I'll update this list as necessary.
Amyro (Fort Joy / Act 1) I think there's something in his quest script that is reverting him back to his original form or blocking the change from occuring.
Tyrille (Elven Encampment / Act 2) I can't find him in the engine yet. He does exist... somewhere.
S_RC_GY_VoidwokenAncestorTree_Boss (Reapers Coast / Act 2). His default scale is set to 1.3 so I lowered it to 1.15. If you see a very large elf undead, he's supposed to still be big.

For those wondering, Larian has past experience with this problem, when Divinity Original Sin 2 came out in 2017 there were complaints that the later acts were nowhere near as complete and full as act 2 and one of the companions had a story that felt much less relevant and fleshed out as the rest.
Sound familiar?
While Larian put out numerous patches and updates after the release of DOS2, the real kicker came a year after release, when they gave everyone who had purchased the game a free upgrade to the new Definitive Edition, which addressed many of those concerns people had.
If we don't see a Definitive Edition of Baldurs Gate that resolves a lot of these issues by the end of 2024 I will be in shock.
I see a lot of BG3 fans saying that they need to add a married with children ending for all the companions or add a Zevlor/ Dammon/Roland whoever romance option, but with all due respect... you're all wrong.
You don't need a fucking domestic life scene with all the companions, you don't need those random npcs to fuck you (that's what mods are for).
What they need to fucking do is finish the upper city.
Give Karlach actual fucking quests and the option to fix her heart.
Give Wyll fucking quests in the upper city and more romance scenes because his number of fucking unique scenes is ridiculously lower than Gale or Astarion's and gee I wonder why.
Please for the love of God, fill cazador's palace because that space is way too fucking big for how little is in it. It's actually kind of embarrassing how empty the palace is.
Fill the temple of Bhaal which has the same fucking problem.
Also while we're fucking at it?
When you're doing all that shit, why don't you attempt to give Orin and Gortash any of the same weight and respect you gave Ketheric???
The entirety of act 2 set him up as a major villain and made him intimidating and then sympathetic and then back to intimidating, and then back to tragic.
He had a whole descent into villainy story arc, with entire quests dedicated to understanding what happened to him.
He's a rich character because of it.
Gortash and Orin??? I mean come the fuck on.
Gortash either dies or dies, and Orin is literally your SIBLING if you're the dark urge, but all you can really do is kill her after she says the same shit to you that she says to a Tav.
You can't talk to her or learn more about her or your past, aside from talking to her dead mom.
She and Gortash come across as mini bosses. They almost feel like optional fucking side quests with how not involved they are.
Also remove lady jannath's house entirely from the game, thanks.
