The decision was difficult for me but I had to choose one as my aim was to be Design Engineer. In the end, I went for CATIA as one of my friends suggested that most of the automobiles company in Germany use this CAD software.

How learning CAD software got me the Job?

It was August 2016 when I was having my Industrial Training at BFW[Bharat Fritz Werner] and they are Germans & they were not using Catia but Solidworks. I somehow managed to get the software and learned few modules from the internet to complete my industrial training. As I was already aware of Catia & Solidedge, learning Solidworks wasn't difficult for me. And also thanks to my project instructor, who helped me throughout my industrial training with the software.

It was June 2017 when I was facing an interview at Adobe Metal Products and the factory manager questioned me 'Do you know Solidworks?' Obviously, the answer was Yes, I know SolidWorks. I told him about my previous experience of SolidWorks and he got impressed. But I was aware that I need to learn more. So, I started learning Solidworks before my joining in Adobe Metals. And when I finally joined there, I was assigned the 3D modeling jobs in the company. But as time passed by I got familiar with the Autocad too as the CNC punching press of my company only accepted AutoCAD files. Currently, I am familiar with 4 different CAD software and kind of eligible to provide a decent reply to this question. Lets start. I'm gonna tell you 3 different formulae to solve this problem.

None of the other students were having that problem and mrs. Lindley (she used to be a cop, she was cool) couldn’t figure it out either.

Screaming time cause in case you haven't noticed I tend to babble or ramble a lot because idk I just do

Anyways me just yelling about the test again

It was so fun to take that test and I'm still so happy about passing it the first time—I'm not very good at 90% of the drawings we were assigned as prep (aka all the possible drawings we could have had to make in the test) and I was convinced I'd bomb it. Assemblies and their modifications were 60 points of the 90 you need to pass, everyone is good at the assemblies, they're super duper easy. Except my dumb ass couldn't remember how to do the angle mate for the wheel linkage (apparently we all got the wheel linkage assembly for part 1) and I cried lmao

But I accidentally got it right in the end :) Tool block I figured out last minute tho I still got its modification wrong (I either fucked up the tool block modification or the int. wheel modification), and the wheel is super easy so I got that one right—

Sophia got the radial swing block which is an utter nightmare so she wasn't able to pass part 1 :( I forget everyone else but Amara got the tool block too and she couldn't do it right so she ended up not passing part 1 either—but the most likely outcome for everyone in general taking the test is that they fail one part and pass the other and all they have to do is wait 21 days to re-take the part they failed

Second part was where Mads didn't pass (got the gripper assembly, forgot to change the material for one of the arms in the modification) but idk what everyone else messed up—we fucking PRAYED that we didn't get the bracket and none of us 3 got it thankfully (bracket is not very easy), Mads and I got the connector which is super easy and one of the easiest you could get (somehow the advanced parts are easier than the basic parts) and even tho we both didn't know why we couldn't extrude the pieces right we eventually got it

But!! I know theyll both pass next time!! Cause they're smart :)

It was a really chill and fun environment—we got to step outside for fresh air or stretching after we finished each time, Ms Hamilton brought in donuts in case some of us missed breakfast or didn't have a good one (I brought a cookie with me and I split it with Mads and Sophia when they arrived), then later we got pizza (that we all helped pay for as requested by Ms Hamilton) and we kinda just talked about what we got on the test and what sucked about it. Mads practiced doing the bracket in case she got it on Part 2 and I put Zooms on her head (Zooms as in my little fox plushie), we looked at what possible drawings we could get as our advanced part, and we said which assembly we hoped to get (I wanted the linkage because I've got that down 100%, Mads didn't want that one and she got the gripper like I said, I ended up getting the linkage and I finished it super quick because I know it very well :) hueheueh). Connector and widget were the two easiest advanced parts, the only mildly difficult one is the bracket, but I don't think any of us 3 got it thankfully

We just messed around for a bit until we had to take Part 2, we took it, I flew through the linkage assembly, we all got free answers to 3 multiple choice questions (easy 15 points, Ms Hamilton gave us the answers lmao), I got to the connector and I messed with it till I finally extruded it correctly, perfect score on part 2, got my Solidworks T-shirt and certificate, got my picture taken for Ms Hamilton, sat around, walked around with Mads and Sophia until they both had to leave, Mads and I went to the Stem building and I poked around a little thing of flowers with bees in it because I had to, sat around at my computer until I had to leave because Ms Hamilton was, she gave me a ride home because it's cold and windy out so she didn't want me to walk,

BASICALLY it was fun as hell

I was wrapped up in a blanket the whole time listening to music and I had a little raspberry hibiscus teabag with me to sniff cause I like how it smells

So i was sick in week 5 so i wasn't actually able to complete any of this work in class because i was sick so once i showed rob my drawing i left and went home to recover. I found this work really easy, in my own time after class in week 4 i had spent a lot of time fiddling around within the program so was already comfortable with the program and how hatch, dimension and edit the line weights in the layers tab.

I started creating the pivot bearing by making the front view first. This mean that i had a reference for both the top and the side view making making them a lot easier.

I tried to use the offset tool, and circle from a tangent just to practice some of the tools i had used less whilst playing around with the program on my own.

Creating the pivot bearing itself wasn't actually that hard. It didn’t require much complex thinking to get done since my background in solidworks and my time playing around with the program on my own gave me all the tools and mindset as to how to easily draw it.

In terms of the AS1100 standards layout that was also really easy to do since i could just reference the textbook for all the dimensioning requirements and layout. Having said this i still think that i need to constantly reflect back on what is in the textbook for proper dimensioning and annotation since my test drawing for the assignment had several mistakes that rob brought to my attention when i showed it to him.

Also: for engineering, art, design, and a lot of STEM fields you're going to need certain programs that are NOT compatible with apple products.

One of the leading CAD programs in industry and school is something called solidworks. This program will not work on a mac. You'll need a windows partition, and that's on top of it already being a massive program. And if you don't know: having a windows partition on a mac is ass. There were so many people that had to stay up until 3am in the computer labs just to do their projects on the lab computers or had to get entirely separate laptops just for class. When covid hit my department had to overhaul the design curriculum specifically because no one could come to the labs - which meant no one could do those assignments - because so many kids had apple even when we've specifically warned them against it.

Some departments switch to lesser but apple-compatible software outright simply because of this. While that my seem minor that's actually a big issue. Forget about the disadvantage the person now has compared to someone that can use the better software and the knowledge that comes along with it — the fact you have to downgrade for your computer that's supposed to be better. On top of compatibility issues with relevant devices, lack of memory, trouble sharing data, etc.

If you're considering upgrading or getting a new computer for school - especially if you're going into any of the fields I've mentioned - please try looking for something other than apple. Even if you don't care about the other reasons apple sucks you should care about the fact that if you choose to use their computers you may be putting yourself at a disadvantage and paying more for it.

I am sorry. I’m bashing Apple here. And for good reason.

This is a plea to my followers.

Stop buying Apple products. I know you’ve used them for most of your life, and I know it’s inconvenient to move to a new brand because in most cases, you cannot take your contacts with you on various chat apps.

I know this is inconvenient. I truly do.

But Apple is not the company it was before. There is now no difference between an Apple computer and a Windows computer in terms of graphic design. I know this for a fact. I had to use both in college 20 years ago, and non-apple computers are now generally better for design work than Apple computers.

Most non-apple companies encourage self-repair of your own devices, while Apple refuses it. I also know this for a fact, as I watched Apple computers become slowly less reparable through the late 90s and early 2000s. Where I was once able to do the repairs on our office computers, we had to start sending out our Apple devices because they started gluing things down on their logic boards. Notably the glue they used was not heat-resistant and led to device damage should the heat sink system fail. But they did this because they wanted to dig more money out of their customers.

Apple software is also designed to fail. I cannot believe people are still buying new devices after the scandal where Apple was slowing their phones in order to force people to purchase new versions.

Apple hardware is designed to become obsolete. Motherboards and logic boards are designed to hold exactly what comes attached to them and will fail if upgrade attempts are made.

Apple refuses to work with software developers despite promises of cross-compatibility. One of the very first coding problems I discovered was to discover a gigantic hole in a software program that made a plotter (giant printer) compatible with iOS. This caused a memory leak, leading to necessary resets of the computer after every 2 feet of printing.

I know that it’s not possible for most of you to just throw your devices away and buy a new one. I wouldn’t be able to do that, either. But eventually there will come a time when you have to upgrade, and I encourage you to take the plunge and purchase a non-apple device. I don’t even have a recommendation for you because literally anything is better than Apple. A rock that you write on is better than an Apple phone.

Unfortunately I expect to be shadow-banned on Apple devices because of this, and I’ll try to report on decreased activity as much as I can.

It’s time to stop trying to beg Apple to change. They won’t. It’s time now to just stop supporting Apple.

Week 13 - Overall Course Reflection

What went well

One thing that went well was me memorizing the AS1100 standards. Having done Engineering studies in years 11 and 12, I had a basic understanding of drafting and the AS1100 standards, such as line thicknesses, engineering typefaces, zoning and bolt standards. This basic knowledge helped me remember a lot of the standards off the top of my head, and project 1 really cemented this knowledge.

Another thing that went well was the AutoCAD component of the course. I think it is somewhat common knowledge that I didn't really like AutoCAD as a software, but with that said, I found it fun to be learning a new CAD software (yes, there is a slight difference) because one of the things I like to do is learn CAD and 3D modelling software. I think that I grasped the basic features of AutoCAD very quickly, and was able to pick up several shortcuts which greatly reduced the time it took to complete my drawings. Even though I don't think i’ll be using Autocad in the future i’ll definitely remember the basics of it, just incase I need to use it.

Another thing that I liked was project 3 because it allowed me to pick up some cool skills that will help me create quick 3D models using foam core ribs, and this is definitely a method I'll be using in the years to come. This process makes very accurate models, more accurate than hand sculpting from foam (something i'm not that good at) and much less complicated than CNC machining models from foam. This project also gave me experience at how to cut curved foam core ribs, and how sharp blades need to be and how quickly they blunt. For this reason I have ordered a box of 100 scalps from China for me next foam core model project, reducing the cost, as I went through $15 in xacto blades for this assignment alone.

What did I dislike

One thing that I disliked was the hand drawn technical drawing exercises. I didn't struggle with them, and I understand that they were the basis for learning the AS1100 standards, but I don't think that I will be using this hand drawn technique again. Unlike hand drawn sketches, the technical drawings look almost identical to computer generated drawings, but take much longer to do, and are much less flexible to changes.

Another thing that I disliked about this course was the use of AutoCAD. Having used CATIA and Solidworks it felt like a big downgrade in CAD, and it felt like a huge handicap to use 2D CAD (even though it was much faster than hand drafting). Its like like it is a bad CAD programme because it is very capable, but it was a very different design process than what I have used in the past, constructing the e-drawing instead of constructing a 3D model and then making an e-drawing from the model.

Another thing I didn't like, or felt was not appropriate was project 2. I understand the value of using photoshop to create basic 3D sketches, but I think the idea of using photoshop to create final product renders, like those I made for project 2 went way over the top, and took much longer than necessary. I think project 2 should assess quick preliminary renderings, which are more suited to photoshop, and if we were to look at doing final renderings, we should look at using a proper rendering engine (such as Blender, Maya, Keyshot or Solidworks) in conjunction with photoshop.
