I just recently started following you so i don't have the full lore of your murderous gay religiously traumatized doggos, BUT, from my understanding, they are Italian and i don't know what part of Italy they are from, yet i can't help headcanoning Vasco as Tuscan, while Machete is probably from some part of Veneto. And as an Italian who has heard Tuscans and Veneto dialet, well it's an hilarious mental image.

Vasco is indeed Tuscan, Florentine to be specific. He comes from a wealthy and influential noble family that has lived in Florence for centuries. He's proud of his roots, and it's usually easy for strangers to tell where he's from. He's a resonably successful politician and has worked as an ambassador and representative of Florence on numerous occasions.

Machete is originally Sicilian (ironically about as far from Veneto as possible), although he was taken to mainland at young age and has lived in several places since then, before ending up in Rome. The way I see it, he exhibits very little local color, his demeanor and (even though Italian hadn't become a standardized language yet) way of speaking are formal, neutral and scarcely give away any hints about his personal history, at least in the 16th century canon.

almost every one i see has two underlying problems that have nothing to do with their dog and everything to do with them

1, can they assess the threat level of a situation and do they understand how to raise/match/lower intensity in order to change the risk of violence? i talked about ways to handle off leash dogs in class last week and felt like i was going insane trying to explain that using spray shield etc increases tension because now the owner is mad that you just "pepper sprayed" their dog.

2, do they have literally any body awareness. can they balance on one foot. do they understand how to use their weight. it's not that i can't be pulled forward by a large dog, but especially if i'm in the mindset of "i'm walking a potential bite risk", it's very unlikely they'll get more than one step from me. and i am tall and i do have muscles, but mostly i know how to set my weight at the end of the leash so even a 150 lb dog can't make me move too much.

and like. we CAN talk about this in class but i'm not a self defense instructor/martial arts instructor, i've just had 7 months of jiu jitsu and got some things beat into me. but oh my god.

while i am on the topic of bungou's author-characters btw, i think i understood how it's fictionalisation real writer figures works better once i realised bsd characters aren't caricatures of the authors as people, but more personifications of the collective literary oeuvre of said authors; the characters are adapted from their writing, rather than the people. obviously, the line gets blurred fairly frequently, for instance in references like the iconic photograph of dazai sitting cross-legged on the bar stool, but a degree of ambiguity is natural, when the boundary between real writers' construction of their selfhood and the construction of their artistic creations is so unstable anyway, hence why it's natural and smart to have bsd's author-characters so often motivated by trying to write narratives of their own selfhood, once again blurring the boundaries in this sort of many-layered tension between irl author's selfhood vs their fiction vs fictionalised bsd author's selfhood vs their fiction vs the fiction they are a part of (asagiri's). but generally speaking though. i think the characters are easier read as representations of the author's work, than as loose recreations of the authors themselves

Does machete not like to be touched/not used to being touched?

I've noticed that whenever vasco touches him in your art, he's always has this grip, or an uncomfortable/suprised look.

I think he's just highly guarded and touch-averse, that's all. He has a history of being manhandled a bit as a child, nothing too extreme, just typical stuff you go though when you're a shrimpy and sensitive kid growing up under the care of a very harsh and volatile adult who doesn't realise how much stronger they are than you. As a priest he's expected to maintain an aura of solemnity and reverence so he just sort of lives in his own little bubble of personal space, which he's neurotically strict about. As it stands, most of the physical contact he gets comes from his doctors and personal physicians, and their treatments tend to be uncomfortable at best and degrading, invasive and painful at worst. So yes, neutral, let alone affectionate touch can be alarming and confusing if you're not used to it.
